Guest Reviews
- brian (10/5): Very satisfied would stay there again if up York city - Excellent location within walking distance into city .clean and comfortable room great parking. Liked the property very much
- Janette (10/5): - Great sleep, food in pub excellent, location brilliant. Managed to park car in pub carpark.
- Lindsay (9/5): Lovely room worth the money - The room was nice and comfortable and the bed was nice too thank you Shower was tiny but still great
- Peter (3/5): At age 82 I didn’t appreciate having to negotiate an iron staircase with my dog to reach the very small room with little - Friendly staff Extremely cramped
- Paul (8/5): Great location and good clean facilities - Great location , everything you need for a short stay was provided- shampoo, conditioner , body wash and plenty of tea and coffee The bed was extremely soft and had loose screws in the frame , we were worried it would break on us in the middle of the night
There was a persistent Loud banging noise from the area underneath us , we assumed it was something in the kitchen possibly a fire door being open and closed a lot?!
The bedroom really needed better blinds/curtains - there were none on the window above the bed making it very light from when the sun came up early morning causing us to wake up at 6am

- lynda (9/5): - Location excellent, away from town noise but only short walk to it.room was small, but had all you need for short stay. Needs more shelves in bathroom as no where to put toiletries, shelf above sink but tiny. Nothing else
- Amanda (9/5): Friendly, great food and bar - Friendly. Nice bar and food Comfortable stay
- Howard (10/5): - Everything we needed, owners and staff so welcoming and helpful, perfect location, accommodation comfortable and food great quality and wide choice, especially Sunday roast with massive Yorkshire pudding a highlight! Would recommend as was very good value for money! Nothing
- Frank (8/5): -
- Carolyn (10/5): Make sure to try their extensive menu. - Fantastic old pub with great hosts, comfortable rooms, parking, amazing food and excellent service central to everything in York. Not a thing!
Niks
- Graham (9/5): Traditional Pub in York - Lovely spot to stay. Near enough to walk to all the places of interest. Great food and lovely to sit in the beer garden outside our accommodation. Air conditioning was very efficient. Would definitely stay again if visiting York. Nothing really
- Daryl (6/5): -
- James (8/5): Lovely little spot in a perfect location - Lovely little room out around the back, in a separate building to the main pub. Small but with everything I needed. Fab hospitality tray and a little fridge to keep drinks cool Room was hot and couldn't turn off radiator in the bathroom. As someone who is quite tall (1m85) I prefer a bed not to have a footboard so I can stretch out

- JO (10/5): -
- David (10/5): Great and will return - Excellent location and friendly staff Nothing
- Marilena (6/5): The staff were friendly and we were welcomed by Beth who was very helpful. We didn’t have to pay extra for our dog, whic - Great location, with parking and dog friendly. The room was so small there was no room for our luggage. Obvious signs of wear and tear, bed linen and towels.
- Chris (9/5): - Great location and nice comfortable room Room a little compact but had all needed for 1 night
- Steven (10/5): - Great facilities, friendly staff and the food was fantastic
- Gail (8/5): Good accommodation but needs blackout blinds and better soundproofing - Good clean accommodation, reasonably priced for York in a good location. The bed was very comfortable and the accommodation was at the back of the pub in a secure area which was gated at night. The food in the pub was outstanding and the staff friendly and helpful The room needs blackout blinds. One window had a thin pale blind and the other window only had a net curtain which meant I was awakened at 5.30 am due to the room being so light and it was then hard to get back to sleep. There is also a lack of soundproofing with very thin walls which meant I could hear word for word every conversation in the adjoining rooms/ those below even though those in these rooms were not speaking loudly so I was again woken by this at 7.30 am which ruined my nights sleep . If this was addressed I would stay again

- Tracy (10/5): Dog friendly place -
- Julie (7/5): Great location, lovely food and helpful staff - The location and food in pub were great Struggled with the stairs up to a small room. Hubby too tall for shower at 6ft 3ins. Basic room, but clean and wee fridge was handy!
- Russ (8/5): Excellent value for money - The room was fab
Comfy clean bed
Powerful shower
Great parking spot
Central
Lovely staff The food was sadly very disappointing
- Lockie (10/5): Great location. Could not praise the staff, facilities and food enough. Thank You Masons Arms for a - Excellent choice, well cooked and plentiful N/A
- Martin (8/5): - Very dog friendly. Room comfortable with good tea/ coffee facilities. Good location. Lovely breakfast. WiFi difficult to access
- Kate (8/5): -
- nicholas (10/5): Great - Every thing Grate location and pub ,staff and food
- Carol (9/5): A great place to stay to visit York - Perfect location with parking on site. Very friendly staff. We hoped to enjoy an evening meal in the pub. The food looked fantastic but unfortunately my husband was unwell and unable to eat. We retired early, but our family were able to continue enjoying their visit to York and we were very comfortable in our room. It was an unusually warm day and the only window available to open is in the bathroom. However we could see and used the two fans provided also propping open the bathroom door allowed good ventilation. The ceiling fan is very quiet so we used that during the night. Again we missed out on breakfast which is extra, but we probably would have enjoyed this too. Maybe we have an excuse to come back? There’s a lovely outside space too and it’s all very dog friendly. We booked here in case no one could look after our dog though we managed to leave her home for this trip, we’re sure she would have loved to stay. There’s a fridge in the room. It would have been good to have cold water on arrival.

- Keri (10/5): - The room was lovely and clean with an en suite toilet. Tea, coffee and hot chocolate provided. The hotel is very central to everything and within walking distance which is a bonus. The staff were very pleasant and friendly, and the food in the pub area is top notch.
- Joanne (8/5): Ideal for a night away with excellent access to the city of York - Location was excellent - short walking distance from town centre.
Breakfast was good
Husband enjoyed his evening meal, however unfortunately not to my taste - the staff however did try to change for me which was good off them.
The room was nice and warm and clean - all that is needed It was a rainy stay and the pub was a little cold
- Angela (10/5): Great lovely pub with nice food . Easy to get to . - Very clean . Had everything you need even a small fridge Nothing not to like . Could do with a hook on the bathroom door to hang things on that’s all
- Susan (8/5): Charming room (formerly a stable) but small and simple. Good location for visiting York. - Quiet, historic and by the river locks. Good restaurant and helpful staff. Parking provided. Definitely rustic and very small. The on demand hot water in the shower was very tricky to operate and alternated between scalding hot and ice cold. Water also leaked from under the shower base when used.
Lovely
- nigel (6/5): Very small room, staff except for initial person on arrival really didn't seem interested in engagin - Breakfast was not included but was good food but expensive, staff owners made use feel as though we shouldn't be there and ignored use Small room , uncomfortable bed mattress, marked sheets, frayed bling on window, frayed towels ,mini fridge was hot not cold ,toilet seat was loose ,very small shower and bathroom
- Joe (8/5): - Easy to find, an independent pub Nothing, good value 4 money
- Jodie (5/5): Overall, worth the money for location and parking. Ideal for a night but I wouldn't stay longer. - The location was fantastic, all staff were extremely pleasant and it was great to be able to park the car prior to check-in. The outside area was really clean and tidy and is maintained really well. The bathroom could do with a little shelf or something near the sink as there was nowhere to put anything. I didn't want to leave my toothbrush on the window behind the toilet. The hand-wash appeared to be really watered down and again was kept behind the toilet rather than next to or on the sink.
The mirror in the bedroom wasn't working (should light up) and the bathroom door didn't shut completely. There was minimal noise from the pub and outside area, but once the room adjacent was occupied it was really noisy both at night and in the morning.
- Birkmyre (8/5): -
- Leahm (8/5): Great value for money in a great location - Staff were excellent knowledgeable about the location and happy to talk. Beds were too hard for our liking.
- manda (7/5): Good value for an expensive city to visit. - The individual access to rooms was perfect for our family experience, and as we had booked all rooms out together we could choose which rooms to have for each couple. The meals we had at The Masons Arms were great. The location and distance into York centre was ideal. The amenities and furnishings of the room were just okay. Had a bad sleep both nights due to hard mattress and horrible pillows. There was no blind on one of the windows which let light in at night and early morning. The WiFi was a nice addition to have but it didn't work well and continuously dropped out of signal.
- Sandra (10/5): -
- Helen (10/5): Very comfortable and convenient. Will definitely recommend it to others. - Superb location, with car park. Nothing
- Barnett (10/5): -
- Kathryn (9/5): -
- James (9/5): Highly recommend - Amazing location. Great parking. Friendly staff. Great breakfast. Room was a touch tight but for 1 or 2 nights is fine
- Paul (8/5): -
- carren (7/5): Great location - Excellent location for centre of York and Barbican, Clean room, cosy with central heating, comfy mattress , small fridge which was good, we've eaten in the pub before and always good, best pie my husband's ever had, Couldn't get far in parking space, room for 5 cars, already 4 there when we arrived, tried to go in forward and reverse but not enough room to manoeuvre so had to park at qpark cost £21 ! Lady who checked us in did apologies and said there should be space later when cleaners had left but when I looked other cars had parked , Small double room , felt quite claustrophobic after a while, although mattress was very comfy the pillows were rock hard , shower was either boiling or cold so couldn't use it, handwash was like water ?? Id say basic room above a pub, value for money for what we paid but wasn't expecting to pay extra for parking,
- Angela (10/5): -
- Diane (10/5): Great place - Perfect place to stay all the amenities in the room with tha addition of the pub, that also does excellent food. Situated within easy walking distance of York centre.
- Michael (8/5): - Easy access to town, bed was comfortable, quite area, helpful and friendly staff. Breakfast was ok my husband had fried breakfast but i had porched egg on sourdough bread, unfortunately the bread was burned.but I still ate it.
- Helen (7/5): -
- Debra (8/5): A pub with character and a relaxing feel. - Food here is excellent with good portions, home cooked. Beds really comfy. Staff friendly. Would stay again. The room was a little small but adequate for us for one night with our dog. There was even a small fridge in there which was useful. It was a little hot in the room and I would imagine in summer it would be extremely warm, but in winter, very cosy.
- nichola (1/5): -
- Janice (10/5): - The staff were friendly and the food was excellent. Rooms very clean
- Jenny (10/5): -
- Christina (8/5): - Excellent location. Attached to a nice pub. Good room size and layout Bathroom was clean but smelled badly as it does not have a window. Potential issue with damp? Parking was great as included but the spaces were really really tight. The bed was far too soft for our liking
- Kayleigh (10/5): -
- Michael (9/5): -
- Ruth (9/5): Perfect for our two night stay - The friendliness of the staff was exceptional; nothing was too much bother for them.
This is truly a dog friendly pub (we feared our dog might want to stay and not come home).
The food was great.
The location is perfect and we parked for our two nights at the pub. Absolutely nothing at all. The weather wasn't great but even then the location was so good that there was plenty to do!
- Shingler (10/5): -
- Owen (10/5): - Excellent location and a proper pub serving proper food, extensive menu and great prices Nothing
- John (7/5): -
- Sheila (8/5): Great location, clean and everything you need - Great place to stay as walking distance to Barbican also secure car park great bonus. Great breakfast. Room a little small but fine for one night and everything there you need. Bedside table both sides would have been great but space doesn’t allow for this.
- Shirley (10/5): Pleasant. Practical and value for money with friendly staff 👌 - Excellent breakfast. Very good value for money. Filled us up for the day. Menu is exceptional good quality food at reasonable prices.
We also liked the fact that the room had plenty of tea/ coffee etc. and there wasn't someone coming in e eryday to make the bed and 'tidy up' so it felt like a home from home. The weather 😆
- Vincent (3/5): Perfectly good for a one night stay in York but the smell from the drains needs sorting. - Location was good, cost ok. The stench from the drains in the Bathroom was overpowering and permeated the whole room after a while
- James (8/5): A pleasant stay - Didn't have to ask for anything. Everything we needed was in the room, towels, iron, hairdryer, fan, mini fridge, kettle, tea and coffee. Good location too, everything was within walking distance.
- sarah (10/5): -
- Ben (10/5): -
- Pat (10/5): FANTASTIC - The room was lovely , the staff are fantastic and its just a lovely lovely place to stay. Nothing
- Liversidge (10/5): We had a lovely stay at the masons arms, warm and welcoming staff, delicious menu all home made food big portions we had e - The room we stayed in was lovely and clean, nice and warm and snug , the location was good ,we had a very enjoyable stay . Absolutely nothing.
- Douglass (8/5): - Lovely traditional old pub, great food and drinks at reasonable prices. Room comfortable and functional.
- David (10/5): Location was great. Food excellent. Staff wonderful. - Short distance from Cliffords Tower and 5-10 minute walk to Central are. Food was wonderful, best curry i have ever had.
- Susan (10/5): - It was perfect for us,we had our dog with us so having our own front door was brilliant and our car was parked right outside. It was -5 the night we stayed but the room was lovely and warm which for me is essential.
- Anne (10/5): - Nice clean room, friendly staff Nothing
- Nataliia (10/5): Wonderful pub & lovely stay - The location was great. It was very busy during our visit, and we struggled to find anywhere to eat. Masons Arms always had a few tables available and the food was scrumptious.
It was very warm in our room, so we felt comfortable. There was a choice of coffee and tea available in the room along with some biscuits. We liked everything. The car park was a bit tight, but we expected it.
- Rowley (8/5): - It was close to all amenities and the pub had a lovely atmosphere double bed was a double bed very comfy but could do with being a king-size.
- Angela (9/5): - Good location
Cosy and warm
Clean Bed a bit small, although comfy
- Andrea (10/5): Perfect location - Perfect stay and location amazing staff very welcoming a lovely family Thankyou for having us! WiFi was iffy but not a big deal :)
- Macauley (6/5): -
- Kathy (10/5): Perfect spot for York! - Location was superb! Bed very comfy and pub serves breakfast daily on top of the usual meals. Room has all you need and shower was good.
- catherine (10/5): Wonderful night away and great location - Friendly and welcoming
Great for pets Nothing
- Rhona (10/5): Lovely traditional pub - Lovely little room, clean and compact. For the price this is an excellent stay if you are visiting York and just need a place to stay overnight. The fact it includes parking is a huge bonus. The outside seating area looks gorgeous and I can imagine in summer it will be a really nice place to sit and sip your favourite tipple! None
- Shyama (8/5): - Good location, nice coffee/tea set up, helpful staff, comfy bed Shower was either cold or very hot, and the walls were not very thick so you can hear other guests (but no pub noises). The latter didn't bother me but it might be good to know if you are a light sleeper.
- Andrew (9/5): -
- Melanie (8/5): - Location was excellent and having free parking was great! Room was comfortable and clean. The room had a cold stone floor which wasn't great.
- Ann (10/5): Excellent. - It’s our favourite place to stay in York. It’s a cosy pub and the food and accommodation are excellent. There is nothing I dislike about the Mason’s.
- Chris (9/5): -
- Gemma (10/5): -
- Liza (8/5): - Pub was welcoming real cosy place.Location was great about 10 mins walk ro centre, weatherspoons across from the pub. Could get a little noisy as smoking area right outside rooms
- Megan (9/5): Decent, would return again, parking and good food on site, only short walk to York centre. - Great location, staff friendly, good food at the Masons Arms, love the fan/light, good coffee/tea facilities Cold tiled floor and bit of dust in bathroom but this is being picky
- Paul (8/5): - It was away from the pub so was very quiet. The barstaff were more interested in the food order's,not good for a pub when all you want is a few swallies.
- John (6/5): - Great location and real ale in the bar. Not very clean. Large cobwebs in the bathroom and a dirty floor.
- Martin (9/5): Greeeeeat - Great location and food
- Martin (9/5): Greeeeeeat - Great location and food
- Rebecca (10/5): -
- Dave (9/5): Great location and nice hosts . Very welcoming - The location was brilliant if ever you want to explore York close to the centre and attractions also close if you want to go and watch something in the Barbica like snooker or a concert . We had the food at night and it was brilliant great value for money and good quality products . All the staff are friendly and helpful . I would love to stop there again no problem at all . The room was clean and tidy with plenty of tea and coffee facility’s . We didn’t get a breakfast with the room rate but they did serve it at an extra cost . We didn’t try it because we needed to get home early . Just little attention to detail . The room at night you could hear a slight buzzing looking back I think it could have been from the mini fridge . Around the heating control needs a better fixing to the wall it’s lose . That’s all I found
