Guest Reviews
- Theresa (10/5): First class B&B - Direction by the hosts was spot on!
Upon arrival we were a little early but as our room was ready they let us check in straight away.
Staff were all super friendly and even offered to bring our bags in.
Full guide or room was given.
The room was beautiful and facilities were excellent including a mini fridge, milk (and oat milk for hubby), bottled water, handmade herbal tea selection, even umbrellas in the wardrobe incase it was wet!
Breakfast was fabulous and really tasty, so much choice and all locally sourced products.
Would definitely stay again if we revisit Lincoln đđ
- Carol-Anne (10/5): - Lovely little hotel. Everything in the room was spotless and well equipped. Parking was interesting but you are warned about that beforehand.
- John (10/5): A superb 3 night stay - Thereâs nothing to fault about this guest house: friendly and helpful staff, comfortable and quiet room, excellent breakfast with outstanding choice. Thanks to everyone at The Poplars! We are sure to return.
- Mya (10/5): - Couldnât fault a thing
- John (10/5): Lovely hotel with an even lovelier breakfast - A lovely hotel and we had a great stay there. Nice, cosy room and very close to the main sights( cathedral and castle) Parking was difficult (on a steep hill) but the owner or his staff were always on hand to guide guests. Highlight was the breakfast, freshly cooked and plentiful, probably my favourite hotel breakfast ever.
Lovely stay and highly recommended.
- Craig (10/5): - Fantastic hotel, with a fantastic host!
Perfectly placed - with everything you need, and more.
We couldnât make the breakfast time due to early plans - food was brought to the room.
- Tracey (8/5): Popular Boutique Hotel - Struggled to get up to hotel in car. Room was comfortable. It had everything we needed.
Breakfast-ordered the night before. Not much interaction. We thought it was in with price but was told it was ÂŁ15 each.
Close to castle and amenities.
- Alex (10/5): Fab place, fab people, fab location - We really enjoyed our stay everyone was very helpful and nice. The room was beautiful, clean, and tidy. They gave us all sorts of handy tips about town which we really enjoyed. I would highly recommend a stay here.
- Alan (10/5): - Spent 8 nights in England. Poplars was my fave of the 5 places we stayed. That was due to staff. Though my train left before (free) breakfast, they left food for us the night before and provided fresh coffee in the morning. Meant a lot to us. Close to all points of interest but a bit of walk from train station. Cheap uber rides available. Great pick to be near Lincoln Castle.
- Oweilda (10/5): - A lovely stay and very friendly staff. Would stay here again đ
- Susan (8/5): - A friendly and convenient place to stay
- Rob (10/5): Worth its 10/10 rating - Such a lovely property, service was brilliant all weekend. Breakfasts were brilliant.
The fact it is located halfway up the hill made for a great setting.
Thank you so much for making the weekend so special
- Bryan (10/5): Perfect Lincoln stay. - Excellent location and fabulous decor. Very comfortable.
- Steve (10/5): - A great place to stay. Be careful when parking on site as theres a chance you may catch your bumper when crossing from the road to the drive. Excellent breakfast.
- Kerry (10/5): - The Hotel is in an excellent location just a few minutes walk from the castle. Friendly staff, excellent extra touches in the rooms. Nice furnishings.
- Jade (10/5): - The hotel is wonderful, clean, catering to our desires and central.
Breakfast is plentiful, fresh and tasty.
- Neil (10/5): Lovely place - Lovely room with great amenities and local produce. Good breakfast
- Paul (10/5): Wonderful stay in Lincoln - Wonderful hotel, beautiful continental breakfast provided. Cleanliness impeccable and nothing too much trouble for staff. Amazingly located to the attractions (Only a 5 min walk to the Castle and Cathedral). All in all a first class stay.
- Gillian (8/5): Lovely B&B in Lincoln - Very well located B&B for visiting both the high and lower parts of Lincoln. Useful arrival information provided beforehand. Room clean and comfortable with tv that works! We were one of the top floor rooms with great view. Bathroom good - wet room that succeeds in only getting the shower area wet and has good drainage. And warm. Breakfast plentiful and fresh. Need to order night before. 3 breakfast timings but if both large communal tables are still full when you arrive youâll be informed when thereâs more space. Everyone is really pleasant and helpful.
Parking. Be warned - not so much tight but steep! And tight, steep angles to drive up into the B&B (and out again). Make sure you have tread on your tyres and your brakes work!! Once in youâre fine. And help and advice will be there if needed when moving car out.
And generally, if youâre using Poplars to visit Lincoln, you will be walking up and down some steep roads, some of which are cobbled.
Would I recommend The Poplars? Yes. Would I book in again? Yes (but I would make sure thereâs no snow or ice forecast)!!
Thank you Poplars for your hospitality,
- Jonathan (10/5): - Great
- Jennifer (10/5): - Really lovely stay, would highly recommend
- Glenna (10/5): - This place was close to the area's best attractions and extremely comfortable and quiet. Breakfast was fantastic with a lot of options. Hosts were available and very helpful.Highly recommend!
- Kenneth (2/5): - Unfortunately the room was very small. No cupboards etc.
No independent heating and extremely poor bedding. Sliding door to shower and toilet was impossible to close.
Parking can only be described as a nightmare.
We paid for 2 nights but because of no sleep due to the cold conditions left after 1 night. The staff didnât even ask why we were leaving early.
- Andy. (6/5): Pleasant stay in Lincoln - Amber was lovey and made us very welcome when we arrived. Location is near by most of the attractions. Car parking isnât for the faint hearted due to the location of the property being hill bound drive
- Jeffrey (10/5): - The staff were excellent, polite, friendly and efficient. The room was very very good - good standard of fittings, bed extremely comfortable and the bedroom and bathroom were immaculately clean. In a fantastic location with astonishing views out over the city and "easy" access to the castle and cathedral - I say "easy" because although it's a short distance to them, Lincoln is a very hilly place!
All in all, a brilliant stay.
- Maria (10/5): - Lovely room and warm welcome.
Information given about local attractions etc.
- Clive (10/5): - Poplars boutique is a fabulous place...We were greeted by the friendly staff who couldn't do enough for us, and they were very helpful... The breakfast selection was great and the quality and service was perfect...A highly recommended place to stay
- Hilary (10/5): Cosy friendly Hotel - Friendly and helpful hosts, in a nice area close to the Cathedral and Castle. Mini fridge, tea and coffee in the room. Good choices for breakfast.
We felt well looked after. đ
- Darren (10/5): - Martyn is a wonderful host. Beautiful place to stay. Our favourite so far of our tour around the north of England
- anne (10/5): - The hosts and staff were outstandingly friendly a helpful. The room was immaculate and really well supplied with amenities. Overall we had a fantastic stay and are planning on returning next year.
- Nigel (8/5): - Great place. Lovely people
- Chris (6/5): - Quirky,
Very tight access and parking.
Indeed would not use again purely for this reason.
This is an old fashioned B&B
Clean and quiet.
- Bryan (10/5): - Friendly welcome. Well situated to explore Lincoln. Close to castle and cathedral.
Good restaurant recommendations
- Tina (10/5): Highly recommend. - Ideally located for exploring the castle and cathedral, with free onsite parking. Very comfortable, large and airy king sized room with remote controlled roof velux window. Tastefully decorated. Mini bar snacks and cold drinks and fresh milk in fridge.
- Lauren (10/5): - We had a lovely 2 night stay at The Poplars and would happily return. The staff were very friendly and knowledgeable of the area. The location of the property was ideal for sightseeing and getting to shops, cafes and restaurants, and was nice and quiet at night. Our room was large, clean and comfortable and cane with everything we needed. The breakfast options in the morning were fantastic and delicious each day and the staff were around to offer more coffee or help you plan your day. Thank you for a lovely stay!
- Brenden (10/5): Perfect! - The hotel was a beautiful, older estate with many comforts. Our host, Martin, was so kind and showed us around the estate. He helped us with knowing what to do around Lincoln and was incredibly friendly. The room itself was beautiful and had lots of amenities such as food, tea, and more. The provided breakfast was delicious and the service was incredible. We were in walking distance close to the castle and the cathedral. Loved our stay and we would do it again!!
- Simon (10/5): - Everything a quintessential B B should be...
- Verified traveler (8/5): Good stay, wasn't able to add photos - Parking was awkward, on a slope, very narrow entrance. House in good location for Castle & Cathedral. Room was bland not like photos on website. Shower was a dribble. Didnt like sitting at breakfast table with other guests, prefer separate tables. Continental breakfast was ok didnt have cooked breakfast it was extra, good they used local produce, ( tea, jam.) Staff were friendly and efficient. Good stay overall
- William (10/5): - First appearances aren't the best.
The drive into the property is very narrow and between high walls. The entrance to the drive is off a one-way street, so needs to be approached from the right end. The property doesn't look good from outside either.
Once inside, though, everything is fine. Jackson couldn't be more attentive or helpful, the room was good and breakfast was great.
The location is ideal - a few minutes up the hill to the Castle and Cathedral or a few minutes down to the waterfront.
- Fiona (10/5): Fabulous - Fabulous place, everything was excellent, would definitely recommend and love to return one day
- MDH (10/5): - Lively boutique hotel under thw castle at the top of a very steep hill! Staff were very welcoming.
- Tom (10/5): - .
- Laura (10/5): Centrally located B&B - Nice B&B centrally located to the key sites/areas. Friendly and helpful staff. Basic breakfast, but included - extra for cooked (eggs, etc). I stayed in a smaller room, but had everything and a roomy shower. In a converted house - narrow stairs and no lifts.
- Sarah (10/5): Dont hesitate to book - Couldnt ask for more, clean well decorated quirky rooms , very comfy beds , the owners had thought of everything, lovely little touches such as the refreshments in the room which was payable , coffee machine and various choices of tea. Breakfast was tasty and fresh a range of choices, friendly server didnt get her name. You choose the time and menu the night before which was a great idea. Martin the owner was friendly and very welcoming , nothing to much trouble . A little gem of a hotel, dont hesitate to book , look forward to visiting again
- Karen (6/5): A weekend in Lincoln. - Lovely building, staff helpful and polite. Room rather small but adequate. Keypad on room door could be in a higher position (rather awkward to use).
Extremely clean and lovely furniture.
- David (10/5): - We found the parking a little bit tricky
- Verified traveler (6/5): Parking Issue - This is an ideally situated place, with easy access to the cathedral. However the parking is an issue. Parking is on a very steep drive with drivers having to âshuffleâ each morning as visitors come and go. This is not made clear when looking to book.
- Martin (10/5): Excellent - Had a great stay. Will use again.
- Shirley (10/5): - We were made to feel very welcome from the start. The room had an en-suite the room was very clean and a welcoming space to relax in.
Breakfast was included and a wide variety of items to choose from. Very attentive hosts. Location was fantastic as it was so close to the castle, Cathedral and shopping areas. Would definitely recommend.
- david (10/5): Simply wonderful - Excellent find. Lovely rooms and wonderful breakfast. Location perfect. Every detail considered. And a very friendly reception! Thank you
- Jane (10/5): Perfect visit! - This stay was amazing. The staff are friendly and helped with local knowledge. This is so close to the castle and cathedral. The room was very comfortable. Says it was continental breakfast but was delicious and much more. Thank you.
- Paul (10/5): Perfect Stay. - What a lovely stay.
Friendly and very welcoming.
Super comfy bed and a lovely bathroom (the gold and black one with double sinks in the pictures).
Plentiful tasty breakfast.
Quiet location. Great views over the City (see picture).
Exceeded my expectations.
I will be back. Thank you.
- Tim (10/5): A wonderful place! - Lovely, kind people in a marvelous old Victorian house. An easy walk uphill to the Castle and Cathedral. I have some disabilities and they were so good and helpful to me.
- beverley a (4/5): Would not stay again - Room cold, shower cold first day but was hot second day. Fridge in wardrobe (only had milk in) could not hang clothes. Dining room very cold, 2 large tables we went with friends but had to move chairs in order to sit together. All doors code access but code box low on bedroom door. Property access and parking facilities extremely steep.
- Robert (10/5): - I like the Victorian styled bedroom. The bed was very comfortable and the bathroom modern and pristine.Tea and coffee availability in room was comprehensive and Martin and his team were very helpful regarding check-in, parking and accommodated my request for an early breakfast.
- Andrew (10/5): - Great location, spotlessly clean, well equipped and very comfortable, very helpful and friendly staff
- John (10/5): 2 night stay at The Poplars - Very enjoyable 2 night stay..Our room was quirky, and cleaned to a high standard..Coffee and tea making facilities which was welcomed after sightseeing..also very handy small fridge with fresh milk. There was a decent choice for breakfast..boiled eggs..fruit..yoghurt..cereal and toast with locally produced jams..Location was great..just a stones throw away from the Castle and Cathedral..Our stay was made enjoyable by the friendliness of all the staff..they really are a credit to The Poplars..Martin the owner very obliging with local information and an all round nice guy..Thoroughly enjoyed our stay.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Staff were very helpful, continental breakfast was very filling with the variety of food. Room was comfortable and with the added bonus of a coffee machine and fridge. Parking a bit limited but no problem. Everything within walking distance.
- Susan (10/5): Try this good b&b - Good situation for both castle at the top and river at bottom of the hill. Room had all facilities you would need i.e. iron, coffee machine, fresh milk. Very good quality room and clean. Extensive breakfast.
Would definity recommend.
- Lady (10/5): Perfection in Lincoln - The Poplars is a lovely place to stay. Perfectly located for a stay in Lincoln. It is beautifully decorated throughout and very comfortable. The breakfast is fantastic, very varied options including gluten free. Martin, one of the owners, is extremely helpful, full of information and top tips. We couldn't recommend it enough and would definitely stay again if we visited Lincoln again. Absolutely perfect in every way.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Proximity to Cathedral and Castle
- Verified traveler (4/5): - Not every guest is a paying guest ...the Property is taking in local council tempary homeless people .
- Peter (10/5): uperb - Wonderful night at this lovely house. Breakfast was amazing and the tea tray was superb. Book with confidence of a classy, clean, attentive stay
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Staff are nice and helpful. My room was nice and clean. It's only a few minutes to bars, shops, castle and cathedral. Enjoyed my stay at The Poplars.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - The property was nice and generally good value for the money. Breakfast was very nice with lots of choice. Slightly disappointing was the bedroom window, the window was fairly drafty and the room cold as a result
- Claudia (6/5): more hostel than b and b - felt more like a hostel than a b and b. number locks on each door, self service breakfast. the window in my room was blocked by the bed and i couldn't open it, dubious stains on decorative pillows. when there was a horrendously noisy person at 1.30 knocking and swearing to be let in next to my room, obviously he couldn't open the lock, i got an apology from the host next to the offer of a payable upgrade.
- Jonathan (10/5): Brilliant B&B - Excellent place to stay, super room, high street only 3 mins walking, customer service was 5 star.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - The property was warm, clean and homely, the owners were lovely and the young lady working there was polite, attentive and helpful. It is ideally placed being only a few minutes walk from the castle in one direction and the new theatre royal in the other. Best place we've stayed in for a long time.
- Barrie (8/5): - V nice stay , everyone was friendly and helpful
The room was nice and comfortable.
The only thing some people may not like is
A shared bathroom and continental breakfast
- Anthony (10/5): A jem in Lincon - Went for a reunion in Lincon and stayed a few extra days. Perfect at the top of the hill. Loads to see and do. Plenty of eateries around location. Continental breckfast had plenty of choise.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - A very nice room, great location, friendly staff but could need a slightly more prominent sign to help you find it
- Verified traveler (4/5): - The location is great and near the castle and the cathedral, but the management could have been better. Staff sometimes were not there when you might need them or in the evening.
- Charmian (8/5): Flying visit - Very nice room, overlooking Lincoln. Very near the cathedral. Extremely helpful and accommodating staff.
Only problem the shower on the top floor, either very cold or very hot.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Great location got early check in. Owner gave us a map and suggested places to see. Our room was fantastic, breakfast was great would highly recommend.
- David (10/5): The Populars B&B - Very happy lovely staff nice location very friendly and well recommended đđ
- Pat (10/5): - Very nice stay they were very helpful breakfast was plentiful But I wouldnât stay again because of parking the drive is very steep I couldnât attempt it but even if I had there was no room to park ? Had to park on street which I wasnât happy about
- Verified traveler (8/5): - It was right in the city centre. But bare in mind how hilly Lincoln is. The approach to property is challenging, both by car or walking. Our room was up 2 flights of stairs and only one shower/toilet to be shared by 4 rooms. However, it was fun for a couple of nights and self service breakfast was excellent.
- Agris (6/5): Parking issues - Canât fault hotel itself. Not happy with parking tho. I was arriving late so phoned up, got all codes and everything. Asked if there is a parking, guy said no problem. Arrived around 11pm, no spaces available on drive, tried to find parking around, nothing. After circling around, found a space where guy was just leaving, around 7 min walk from hotel with big bag, not happy at all....
- Kathryn (10/5): Lovely homely place - Had a very enjoyable night at the Poplars. The people there were really nice and obliging. It is in a good area close to the castle.
- Paul (8/5): One night in Lincoln - Home from home great value
- Dave (10/5): Special - Superb. Nothing negative to say.
- Ian (10/5): - my experience was very good room and breakfast was excellent staff were very helpful the only issue I had was the off road parking as the approach was so steep that my car bottomed out scraping the spoiler and taking the number plate off I was given a parking permit for on road parking so no problem thank you Martin highly recommended hotel
- Greg (4/5): - Booked but chose to cancel my booking at what appears a run down establishment with a steep access damaging my car
- Sue (10/5): - Lovely hotel great for visiting cathedral, castle and shops.
- Maria (8/5): - Nice place, but difficult to find. Entrance too steep.
- Yvonne (8/5): Central location and wonderful owners and staff - Central to both cathederal and city centre but perhaps not the best for the less mobile guests as extremely steep stairs with rooms over 3 floors. My other half was unwell during our stay and the owner could not do enough to help, even by bringing me a meal in the evening as I couldnt go out and leave him.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Excellent - Excellent
- Steve (8/5): Nice place for Lincoln break - Excellent B&B. Very friendly and welcoming hosts. Comfortable, with individual decor and furnishings. Very good location within 10 mins walk (if steep in places) of city centre and Cathedral Quarter. Self-service continental breakfast. Downside: awkward parking.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - A lovely, cosy B and B! Great views across the city from the room. Would definitely recommend! Would maybe suggest adding cheese/ ham to the breakfast, but that's about the only thing I could add. Really enjoyed our stay!
- Verified traveler (8/5): The Friendly Hotel - This is a nice friendly hotel very central in city. Very pleasant and helpful staff put myself at ease as i was on my own on this visit. On a hill though so need to be fit if walking out.
- ruth (8/5): Victorian comfort and colour - The Poplars is situated up a steep hill, overlooking the city. A quiet and quaint area. The hosts are very friendly and were informative on the best places to visit. We had a very enjoyable stay. Beautiful continental breakfast eaten on both mornings. Plenty of choices in a sunny room. And two handsome cute cats (Had to mention the cats). A home from home.
- Harry (10/5): Welcoming - Staff were so accommodating and helpful. A really comfy and friendly place to stay. A big thank you.
- Fergus (6/5): Poplars Lincoln - More a guest house than a hotel, as it does not have a staffed reception, or staff in attendance. Not car friendly, as the driveway entrance is quite steep and can cause the front of the car to scrape the pavement. Very limited parking, although there is paid parking about 300m away at the foot of a steep hill. Within walking distance of Lincoln Central Station and city centre, although the hill up to the property is quite steep. Rooms are not en suite, and the shower is also in the main bathroom, rather than being separate. Breakfast (cold) offers a good selection.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Perfect place to stay - Lovely had two nights at the poplars and to put it simple lovely place to stay, staff very friendly and helpful nothing was to much trouble they really go all out to make your stay there perfect, if or when we go back to Lincoln I would definitely stay ther again 10/10
- Beth (10/5): - The owners of this hotel cannot do enough for you! I'm a student at the Uni of Sheffield but I'm on placement in Lincoln, so rather than do 80 miles of commuting every day I decided to stay in a hotel. I requested access to a microwave and fridge, so Martin, one of the owners, kindly upgraded me to an ensuite bedroom in another property just down the road from the hotel, which also has a full working kitchen with a fridge, crockery and cooking utensils. It was perfect.
Super comfy kingsize bed, lovely clean bathroom with nice hot powerful shower, and to top it all off a plasma TV screen which I could watch Love Island on every night!!!
Kitchen and dining room were also decorated nicely, clean and tidy, cereal and lovely fresh bread and jam provided for breakfast.
Thanks for a fab stay!!
- Kath (10/5): - Breakfast when you wake up is excellent idea. Great european experience absolutely loved it. Location is super idealy licated for the Cathedral and castle as well as the brayford and steep hill.Staff very welcoming and helpful. Rooms are tastefully decorated relaxing and very clean. We would definitely book again. Thank you for a wonderful stay.
- Georgios (10/5): A colorful and charming BnB - The rooms are tastefully decorated. The atmosphere is cosy and you will feel right at home with the friendly attitude of the staff. Because of its location, offers a magnificent view of the city, especially in the night. It is highly recommended for couples also, I personally would gladly revisit with my wife this time. The breakfast was nice, no exaggerations, with a very enticing assortment of preserves!
- Verified traveler (10/5): - A warm welcome and a very comfortable stay. Great location. Will be going back.
- Sarah (10/5): Great location - The Poplars was an excellent location in Lincoln, you could easily walk anywhere in the city centre. The room was lovely - nice shower, double basin, great choice of teas, nice outlook from the window.
Be aware that it is on a very steep hill!
- Danielle (8/5): Convenient location, access and friendly staff - Lovely stay in converted Victorian house, the room was warm with a separate temp control on the radiator and electric blanket but the bathroom was freezing. Key code access meant I could come and go easily so was very convenient. Very comfortable overall, but the mattress would not be suitable for more than one night if you suffer with your back as it was quite soft. Parking is an option but be sure to liaise with the owners so you're not blocked in and the driveway is very tight (be warned if you have a wide car). An enjoyable stay overall and an ideal location within 5-10 mins walk of the city centre, would recommend.
