Guest Reviews
- Rebecca (9/5): - The kindest staff and lovely tatami room. A cozy vibe in a quieter part of Kyoto (which we really loved.) staff had great recommendations and helped us with all kinds of things during our trip. The property is an old traditional house , so don’t expect very modern convenience. But showers, etc were very nice.
- Roberta (10/5): Charming -

- Francesca (10/5): -
- Uroš (10/5): -
- Uroš (10/5): -
- Alica (9/5): - Traditional charming house For a tall person, the ceiling is very low. I hit my head multiple times. It’s unfortunate, as the facilities are charming, but I wouldn’t go back because of it.
- Antonina (10/5): -
- Valenzuela (10/5): - The rooms here are extremely comfortable and the Traditional style gives the place a warm and homey feel unlike any other. It is a wonderful stay and the staff is very friendly.
- R (10/5): -
- Marcus (9/5): Just perfect! - Very basic but everything you might wish for in Japan: vintage washitsu-style ryokan with nostalgic feel.
Very good location amid Higashiyama. Walls are thin, you will hear your neighbors or other sound sources like air conditioning.
- Elijah (7/5): - What an incredible experience.
You can tell that the house has a lot of history and the people who renovated it wanted to preserve that history. I'm 6ft even and I hit my head a couple times as I navigated through the space. This also became a problem when it was time to sit on the toilet.
It was draft in the home but the in room ac unit helped cut the chill.
- Béatrice (10/5): - The whole building is really beautiful, it is quite homey. You can see the central garden, it is quite relaxing. The staff was very helpful when I needed to do laundery and super welcoming with their provided guide of the neighboorhood. The room was super cute! Would totally recommend for people looking for a more authentic place to stay.
- Angharad (10/5): Really lovely - would recommend to anyone - The staff were very friendly and kind
- Ricardo (10/5): -
- Lesley (10/5): Beautiful guesthouse in a convenient location! - It’s beautiful, quiet and yet also very accessible. Rooms are lovely as well and common facilities are very clean and inviting. Staff are friendly and helpful as well! Toilets and shower rooms are a little small but it’s to be expected with an older building.
- Nicole (10/5): - Lovely staff. Very traditional stay
- Mohammed (10/5): Kyoto Vibes displayed perfectly! - It was a cute cozy traditional style room. I absolutely enjoyed every minute of my stay here. The staff were super friendly and accomodating, I cannot say anything bad about this place. It was close to the train station too only about 8 minutes of walk. Highly recommend this place to all travellers
- Merrin (10/5): -
- Roxanne (10/5): - Lovely place, great friendly staff. Sure the toilet is tiny, but not a big deal :)
- Erin (10/5): I had a wonderful time at Guest house Waraku-An, and will definitely be back if in Kyoto again! - The location is wonderful, surrounded by many great spots to eat, or drink or bathe (with so many recommendations from the accomodation). The staff were welcoming and friendly and very helpful when needed! I stayed in the single room which was simple and elegant, very clean and peaceful. The floor and rooms might be wooden and thin, but the other guests were very respectful and quiet and I had no issues with noise. I really had no issue with it (being a small person), but if you are tall beware that the toilets are rather small. Otherwise they are very clean and fulfil their purpose nicely.
- Krista (10/5): -
- Paula (9/5): -
- Catherine (10/5): Absolute gem - would love to go back 🤞A must do 🥰 - The welcome from the hosts 🥰 The guest house is absolutely beautiful - so thrilled we booked this , sadly could only stay one night. The list is endless things you could borrow / use straighteners , travel plug, phone chargers , fridge /microwave, rent for nominal charge hire bikes, gowns Nothing
- Wang (9/5): - Wonderful place to stay for whom prefer a quiet neighborhood to visit temples and take a walk than busy shopping areas. Super nice staff and elegant little garden. For visitors who book a second-floor room, you will need to go downstaris to use the bathroom and toiliet (this is an old house).
Can tell the host really put efforts to make it comfortable and gave so much useful information - appreciate it.

- Philip (10/5): The perfect stay in Kyoto. - We just loved the Guest House and our traditional room with its internal Japanese garden outlook. Such a haven and very comfortable - I always seem to sleep best on a Tatami mat floor with a futon. The food and beverage suggestions and advice from the staff were excellent. The staff have great English and are always there to help. You must go to MEMEME COFFEE HOUSE (fabulous coffee and french toast) and スタンドTomi - https://maps.app.goo.gl/bw7sub2dJF5ZZ8mn9 the most amazing food in a tiny corner bar. The couple who run it are beautiful and so helpful. Our best meal in Japan and a wonderful introduction to the beauty and complexity of Sake. Amazingly affordable. 7Eleven, Family Store and Lawsons - all near by. Nothing.
- Angie (10/5): Exceptional - The house is authentic, and atmospheric. You really don't hear other guests.
The service is wonderful, everybody is very helpful. You can leave your luggage for the day. Free coffee and tea offered. Laundry service is available for a fee.
It's well connected. The canal nearby, close to the Kyocera museum of art and Rohm theater, is a wonderful walk, and it takes you all the way to the temples in Gion.
Quiet neighborhood and cheaper food than in Gion.
- Connor (10/5): Exceptional - The staff (yuki) was extremely friendly and helpful. Close to the river and some amazing sights That i only stayed 1 night
- Laura (9/5): Had a great time and would definitely come back! - Very cute building. We really enjoyed our stay.
- Zinmar (9/5): It was a fun experience of Japanese traditional bed and old fashioned furniture and tatami. It’s a small old guesthouse - 100 years old but well maintained. It was fun and cozy small guest house. Had a wonderful experience of Japanese traditional bed tatami, made ourselves spread out the sheets , pillows and blankets .
- Danielle (9/5): Superb - Character home, friendly helpful staff, comfortable rooms
- Kezya (9/5): One of the experiences you have to try at Japan - The place is exactly like in the picture.
Very traditional and vintage. But they have best service. The staff very nice and helpfull. We have an unforgettable one night stay at this guest house and it feels like home 😊
- Joseba (9/5): Superb - Every
- Jacob (8/5): Great location, value for money and staff. - Great location, value for money and friendly staff. More interesting than a typical western hotel.
- Pablo (10/5): Best night sleep ever - Everything was amazing. The bed was always my concern because I though was hard but no, actually was completely the opposite I had my best sleep ever, even I am thinking now to adapt my home as that type of bed.
The environment, decorations and everything I felt a real Japanese, the staff was very kind all time N/A
- Althaf (8/5): Very good - Toilet are too small
- Paul (10/5): Amazing - Truely amazing and authentic Japanese accomodation experience.
- Angela (10/5): Kyoto gem. Beautiful, traditional Japanese guesthouse. - Guest House Waraku-An is another Kyoto gem. It’s an ancestral home adorned with wonderful furnitures, decors. It’s warm and cozy inside. The tatami room we stayed in was spacious; liked every detail in the room. We had a comfortable night. Had a little situation in the morning but the personnel was really understanding and reassured me that it will be taken care of. They had shared bathrooms and I thought, initially, it would be a hassle, but surprisingly it wasn’t. Would stay longer in the future. Nothing I didn’t like during stay.

- Cyndie (9/5): It was lovely place to experience sleeping in a tatami room for one night - Beautiful traditional Japanese house, nicely styled. Our room was spacious, the blanket was fluffy and warm on a cold night. The shower in the common area was also spacious and nice.
We were allowed to check-in early which was wonderful because it was a rainy day and we needed to get changed after getting wet while travelling. The property is located close to the buses. Toilet is a bit small
- Alicia (10/5): Exceptional -
- Sean (10/5): Exceptional -
- Ka (10/5): Second stay in Waraku, looking forward to the third time 😊 - This is my second time of stay. Love this historical hostel which filled with tradition, beautiful scene and local living culture. The staff are nice, friendly and with fluent English. It's so lucky that we can squeeze in a 1N stay here. This makes our Kyoto trip shine with one more memorable experience. The location is with a bit distance from the Kyoto main station (need to take a 3Xmin bus trip by route 206). Mind the noise at night as this is a 100-yr old building made with wood.
- Amy (10/5): Wonderful little old hotel with great hospitality - Traditional hotel - a real slice of Japanese culture Small space for the toilet - but that is to be expected in this type of building so you just accept it
- Abhikbrata (8/5): Very good -

- Jessie (8/5): Very good -
- Eva (6/5): Pleasant -
- Yu (9/5): Looking forward to coming back here again - We have lived here for ten days and it already seems like our own home. The owner is very nice, always polite and kind. The location of the house is also very good, there are three bus stops that can go almost anywhere in Kyoto. If there is anything to be improved it would be that the 3 toilets are too small, but this is an old house and it is difficult to change the layout.
- Yashwanth (9/5): Superb -
- Adi (10/5): Exceptional - Sweet family-like experience. Generous welcoming and warm stay.
Thank you!
- Serina (10/5): A wonderful week in Kyoto in a traditional machiya that felt like a home away from home! - I loved my stay at Waraku-An - I stayed for a week, and staying at this traditional machiya was one of the highlights of my trip! Sleeping on the futon was incredibly comfortable, and the room was very clean. I also really enjoyed checking out various bakeries, restaurants, and cafes that the staff of Waraku-An had recommended on a map that they provide - the places that they recommended provided delicious breads, dinner and breakfast sets like freshly made udon noodles. The staff were also so accomodating with my requests to throw out rubbish and attain hangers/clothing lines, and always greeted me with a warm smile. The location is very convenient - a 10min walk from Jingu Marutamachi Station, and a 15min walk to Heian Jingu Shrine. I cannot recommend Waraku-An enough. Thank you for the kind hospitality! :) Sometimes the WiFi connection was a little spotty in the private room, however, the staff already acknowledge this in their booklet, and recommend checking the salon area for a better connection.
- John (10/5): Exceptional -
- Eva (10/5): Exceptional - we had a great stay in this wonderful old house and hope to come again, thank you so much! -
- Carissa (9/5): Superb - the ryokan style and all the staffs are friendly, helpful. none

- Aurelija (10/5): Exceptional - amazing local experience. All family was happy to experience the sleeping on tatami 😃 The blankets were puffy like cloud 😃 if was super comfy to sleap. And house and garden itself are mazing. Go for it if you visit Osaka and have unforgetible experience for all the family.

- Yen (10/5): Exceptional -
- Rodhiatul (9/5): Superb -
- Dymphna (10/5): Authentic, local, and comfortable - A clean little haven away from the city to rest and recover as I spent my time sightseeing in Kyoto
- Zijue (8/5): Very good - Generally good! It’s not located in the heart of the city, but very convenient to get to by bus. Staff are very helpful and very kind! The private garden is really beautiful! It was bit cold during this season (winter). I think it’s better to stay during spring or fall season
- Hung (8/5): Very good - friendly host Bathroom
- Jonathan (10/5): Lovely stay in Kyoto - I love how welcoming the staff is and the atmosphere of the house. It feels a bit like staying in the old Kyoto.
- Traveller (10/5): A perfect place to experience a traditional old-style Kyoto house - The guest house was an amazingly beautiful old-style Japanese house. It was very photogenic and contained lots of stuff that could belong in a museum of Kyoto. The staff were incredibly kind and helpful. The house is in a convenient location, near a bus stop to take you to Arashiyama and other sights, a short walk to the Tozai line subway station and to the Keihan Line. I will definitely stay here again.
- Teng4 (9/5): Superb -
- Julien (10/5): The perfect japanese ZEN atmosphere - - The house style, very typical and with a peaceful atmosphere.
- The staff is very friendly and helpful It was full during almost all our stay in Kyoto, so we only could have spent 1 night there !
Wish it was more ! :)
- Lynda (9/5): Superb -
- Ibuki (10/5): Every staff here was extraordinarily polite and took great care of each guests. No flaws found from any aspect. - japanese traditional aesthetics, one of the few remaining Machiya(町屋) . The garden inside was just breath taking, regardless of weather condition.
