- De Villiers (10/5): Great stay in beautiful surroundings - Selma is an excellent host. You don't go there for luxury, but its simplicity has a charm of its own. No electricity, so signal, but you can switch off and relax. The venue has everything that one would need for a break away. I can highly recommend this place.
- Franco (10/5): -
- Ayaz (9/5): -
- Sophia (6/5): - Selma Only one shower and toilet and the only access is through a bedroom.
- André (10/5): -
- Robert (10/5): - Remote peaceful location. Simple country facilities.

- Davids (10/5): Will go back any day - Quiet and rustic farm house, off the beaten track
- Linette (9/5): - Beautiful setting and super friendly host
- Margie (10/5): Exceptional little Karoo farmhouse - What a wonderful stay! Beautiful drive through breathtaking scenery took us to Cloete House.... exactly as in the pictures. We loved the cottage, huge fireplace, parrafin lamps and a glimpse back to the simple life.
- Derek (10/5): Exceptional -
- Tharina (10/5): Exceptional -
- Nic (9/5): A rustic and authentic Karoo getaway - Amazing location and only electricity in the kitchen. Candles and lamps in a historic valley in the Karoo. Not to mention the Gamka River. Nothing at all
- Annette (9/5): A fabulous stay if you want to get away from it all, see the milky way and just breathe! - It was like a step back in time - no wi-fi at the cottage, beautiful oil lamps, a donkey for hot water, amazing scenery and a general 'slowing down' - fabulous!
- Herma (9/5): Superb -
- Lezanne (10/5): Exceptional - Magical, nested in the mountains, quiet and peaceful and amazing. Planning our next booking already.
- Anika (10/5): Very relaxing! Such a peaceful place to stay -
- Keri-ann (10/5): Exceptional -
- Christine (10/5): Satisfied and was a privilege to stay on the farm. It is safe and the property is well cared for. - The location is breathtakingly beautiful.
The Host Selma was absolutely wonderful.
- Tim (8/5): Great spot not too far off the beaten track - Peaceful surroundings, well equipped house, very comfortable Far from the river for swimming and cooling off in hot weather, with cooler weather this location would be great
- Jacqueline (10/5): Exceptional -
- Minuche (9/5): Superb -
- Carika (9/5): Superb -
- Hillmari (10/5): Exceptional -
- Jacobs (10/5): WoW. I will definitely return again, but next time for longer. - The location is beautiful. I had the pleasure of meeting the owner, and I have to say what a friendly person Mrs. Nel. She really takes very good care of the place. The only thing I could fault is the fact that some of the rooms did not have water in the morning, but we understand these things happen. There is also a lot of spiders, but that is to be expected, as it is part of nature.
- Marize (10/5): Exceptional -
- Mike (10/5): Exceptional - Quiet isolated farmhouse in a beautiful kloof.
- Anton (10/5): g - The location was perfect, a lovely get away in nature every thing was perfect
- De (10/5): Exceptional - Hostess Selma' friendliness and warm welcoming.
- Elfreda (8/5): warm reception, beautiful scenery - toilet not filling up tank , needed to put water in with a bucket
- Marika (8/5): Very good -
- Gerrie (10/5): Exceptional -
- Jaco (10/5): Matjiesvlei is the closest you will get to heaven! - Old world charm, yet very tidy and practical. nothing
- Paul (8/5): Very good -
- Robyn (9/5): Superb - Matjiesvlei is all about the location - the incredible quiet of the Karoo and the beautiful views , hikes and swims. It is a slice of life in the Karoo which means that it is simple and not always easy - paraffin lamps and donkey boilers. But the peace and stars at night is what you are really there for , not cresture comforts. The water pressure was extremely low. Difficult to have a shower as the water just trickled down the wall.
- Mandy (6/5): Pleasant stay in quiet scenic surroundings - Beautiful location, but rather remote for our purposes.would have liked to see more of the farming activities, a bit of local knowledge Was very hot, so maybe another fan,
- Genna (10/5): Exceptional -
- Albrecht-smit (9/5): Superb -
- Charlton (10/5): Exceptional -
- Jansen (10/5): Exceptional -
- Maartin (10/5): Exceptional -
- Helen (8/5): Quiet and peaceful with amazing scenery. - Selma was such a kind and generous host, the
cottage was your typical South African farm accommodation, cozy and comfortable style, and truly authentic. The walking trails were just wonderful with magnificent scenery. Probably our own inability to get the donkey system to heat the water properly, but a minor mishap.
- Bryan (10/5): Perfection - not enough time - From the location to the vistas, the evening and morning sounds, the comfortable bed, creaking floors, paraffin lamps, warm, friendly, open hosts - everything was perfect. Thank you! Only two things I didn’t like - I did not have enough time and I was traveling alone, so I couldn’t share this bliss.
- Anthony (10/5): Exceptional - An escape to a time that was , completely off the grid... nothing to do but relax
- David (7/5): Good -
- William (8/5): Very good -
- Cornelis (10/5): Spectacular - Great views of the mountains, house is situated in a forest of aloes. Nonthing
- Jason (9/5): Superb -
- Elizabeth (8/5): Very good -
- Angus (10/5): Cosy Cabin in an Idyllic Location - I really loved Matjiesvlei for the unreal location. You're nestled in a secluded and beautiful valley in the Karoo. I went for a quick run in the morning and spent most of my time taking photos of the views!
The house was cosy, with firelighting equipment to help you get a roaring fire going when you arrive, the check in was a breeze and the hosts made an arrangment for my late arrival in the rain. The wifi works great, and its really a dream!
- Swen (8/5): Very good -
- Johann (6/5): Pleasant -
- Hugo (8/5): Very good -
- Marc (8/5): Peace and serenity - The road to and from the cottages is challenging for some. I was not fussed but my wife is scared of heights and in some parts was anxious of the sheer drop. The cottage takes you back in time as there is no electricity, hot water or mobile phone reception. I really enjoyed the seclusion and quietness but this may not be for everyone. The 'donkey' to have hot water takes me back to my childhood as it requires tender loving care and lots of patience and time. Here again, not for everyone but if you want a really peaceful break then this place is ideal. Highly recommended!
- Christopher (10/5): we enjoyed the quietness and the use of childhood remembered procedures - the isolation, good use of old working services like the donkey, the drum braai, old but comfy chairs, use of no electricity utensils. good clean old fashioned experience. can’t really think of anything
- Cheryl (8/5): Comfortable and quiet - Lovely views and big open very clean comfortable unit. Selma is a friendly.host. The flies on arrival
- Jackie (9/5): Superb - The Douglas House is set in a beautiful location. A quaint charming authentic period cottage and in my opinion unbelievable value for money. Well done to the Nel family. We could have stayed another 2 nights.
- Mia (10/5): Off the beaten track - Lovely accommodating host, cottage spotlessly clean, well stocked, with a very comfortable bed! We loved the seclusion and the river was a big bonus. Just note it is 7 kms from the main road on a dirt road, but easily manageable. Highly recommend! (:
- Erik (6/5): Pleasant -
- Nicole (10/5): Remoteness at its best ❤️ - A unique experience in a peaceful surrounding. Stargazing, hiking and swimming in the river - what else can one ask for. Nothing. If you like being remote - go there.
- Hayley (9/5): Lovely peaceful spot - Beautiful location, very peaceful, lovely walks nearby, great old house which was nice and cool in the summer heat, excellent outside area with braai and shade Note that 2 of the bedrooms in the Thairt house are outside the main house with their own entrances - not ideal for young children.
- Horstmann (8/5): Matjiesvlei wonderful stay - Very friendly people, very clean farm house. Loved the peaceful tranquility of the mountains.
- Anthea (10/5): Wonderful wonderful place! Highly recommended! - The location is unforgettable. Very beautiful, remote but accessible. Comfortable facilities and fine wifi under the tree (but the whole point of being here is to switch off).
- Ben (7/5): Good -
- Christopher (10/5): Unexpected simple quiet solitude, - The isolation, the silence, the back to more than adaequate basics. Hand held lamp,, batteries, donkey geyser.
The history of the farm, the splendid rugged hills and mountains. Forewarning. The access road is gravelled from highway, well kept. We enjoy historical well kept homes.
Some City folk might not enjoy this type of accommodation.
- Mari-louis (10/5): Exceptional -
- Green (9/5): Superb -
- Johan (9/5): STILL, BEAUTIFULL VIEW, FRIENDLY STAFF - N/A MAY BE SOLAR POWER IN FUTURE FOR LIGHTS
- Anonymous (5/5): Passable -
- Peter (10/5): Exceptional -
- Derek (7/5): A lot can be done to improve, huge potential - Really remote farm, isolated with NO electricity. Very clean and bed comfortable but only a double, quite small as we are used to a king size bed!! was not aware there was no electricity, Shower curtains not great, donkey for hot water is very far from the house so wastes a lot of hot water
- Collette (10/5): Exceptional -
