- Bryan (9/5): Warm staff and convenient location - Staff were super friendly and helpful. The locations is very convenient, right across from one on the ropeways. The rooms are traditional tatami with comfortable mattresses and warm duvets. They have access to some discounted lift tickets and equipment rentals. The optimal breakfast, while priced higher than other restaurants, offers a lot of value and is a delicious spread of western and Japanese fare. The toilets and showers are shared so each floor has a shared bathroom. The common shower/bath are in the basement level. You have a sink in your room though. This is probably common but still not as convenient as having your own private facilities. The fixtures are a bit dated and could use modernization.
- sungfang (9/5): - 屋主接待親切熱心 早餐超豐盛
- Nicole (10/5): Excellent stay with very nice Japanese host. - Location is good. Next to the ropeway. The host was very friendly and helpful. She made the stay very nice. Very hard to book the property!

Hosts were so friendly, helpful and accommodating. Breakfast each morning was wonderful. Separate ski drying room with its own entrance. A great place to stay in Zao

- Amy (9/5): - Emiko was an attentive and considerate host who checked in with us each day and was happy to give advice where needed. The breakfasts were wonderful and we could walk to the first ski lift in 2 minutes with restaurants and onsen just down the road. Make sure you read the room description fully as I didn't realise it was a shared toilet and bath for our room.
- KATE (10/5): - Kaiko, the owner, was absolutely fantastic. Nothing was too hard and constantly went the extra mile for our large group of 12.
Food was fabulous, position fantastic and we will definitely be back.

Also the location is right next to the main lift which was a huge bonus! Being a foreigner my back wasn’t used to the beds, but you can’t be picky when traveling so far away from home!

Gerne benutzt.
- Chiu (9/5): People is nice and friendly. -
- Adam (10/5): Quaint Pension in the Heart of Zao - Keiko was an amazing host, very helpful and friendly.
The Pension was in a fantastic location, right across the road from the ropeway. Breakfast was very filling, delicious and good value. The room was spacious and very clean. Nothing - it was all fantastic.
Communal bathroom, so if you need your own bathroom, this isn't the place for you. We loved walking to the onsens though, so it wasn't a problem for us.
- David (10/5): Exceptional -
- Liyi (9/5): NICE,CLEAN,COZY STAY. FEEL LIKE HOME. - KEIKO様はvery smart and beautiful personです。Japanese-style room very good.very comfortable.Toilet good.Bathroom nice.Bathtub kind of like a small hot spring.Very close to the no.1 and no.3 ropeway. There is a coupon of the lift ticket and rental on the front door.ALL GOOD. Wallpaper a little bit old.
- Robert (10/5): Exceptional -
- Shum (10/5): Worth to stay for ski or snowboarding trip. - Very convenient to reach rental shops and cable cars, almost ski-in and Ski-out. The owner is very helpful. She helped us to call free taxi, communicate with clinic before we reached there for checking injuries caused by snowboarding. Nothing
- Josephine (9/5): The chalet is well maintained and run by a sweet couple. The wife Kunimatsu San is very sweet and helpful. She is resp - Great location. 2 mins walk to skiing rink and convenience store. The breakfast is amazing. We don’t have private toilet in our room unlike some other rooms. The bathroom is 2 floors down.
- Stephen (10/5): Wonderful - The location is excellent. The lady who runs it is so welcoming and will go out of her way to help. The rooms are large and traditional Japanese which we liked. Has a drying room with own entrance. Nothing
- Steven (10/5): So comfortable - Keiko, you are a wonderful host, such an angel. We thoroughly enjoyed our time staying with you and we will be back. Thank you so much for having us. Nothing
- Brianna (7/5): Good - Location was awesome - just a short walk to Ropeway. Warm room and clean bathroom. The staff were lovely and very helpful. Quite expensive for what you get and no windows in the room.
- Stephen (9/5): Superb - Very close to ski lift and rooms were very clean and warm Food is expensive and average
Everything else was fantastic
- Andrew (10/5): Exceptional -
- Lloyd (10/5): Lovely host. Cosy room near bathrooms and drying room. Located near supermarket, restaurants, ski hire and be lifts. Gre - Right at the Ropeway and chairlift Liked it all
- Polly (8/5): Excellent - Breakfast All good
- Benjamin (10/5): Prime Location! - Great location and is a short walk to both gondola stations, onsen, convenient stores, and restaurants close by.
Breakfast was healthy and fresh. Accommodation was clean and quiet, considering it was fully booked out during my stay
The owner, Keiko, was a sweet lady who always greeted you with a big smile and was always willing to help out.
I would stay at Pension Puutaro next time to visit Zao Onsen. Bathtub water temperature could have been hotter.
- Stuart (9/5): Pension puutaro lives up to its billing - Keiko is the most wonderful humble attentive host. She is faultless to the letter. This is one of the loveliest places we have stayed with out going over the top. The location is excellent with close access to lifts, equipment hire and near by onsens. It is a very short 5 -7minute walk into the main strip. Nothing it was terrific
- Ciang (8/5): Excellent! - Property quaint and owner lady is a very kind person. We like everything about this place.
- Troy (8/5): Very good -
- Andrew (9/5): Superb -
- Maggie (10/5): Homey, cozy and clean - I will definitely come again. Cozy, super homey and feeling safe. Very clean. Love the staff! N/a
- Angel (10/5): Super good location, very nice host and highly recommended - The location is super convenient. It's next to the ski rope, ski rental place and there are a few restaurants and a convenience store nearby. The owner of the Pension is super nice, she offers all kinds of help and make our trip very comfortable. N/A
- Navapon (10/5): Heart warming, Feel like home - Excellent service! The staff at Pension Puutaro were incredibly friendly and attentive, going above and beyond to make my stay comfortable. Highly recommend for their exceptional hospitality!
- Bruce (9/5): Superb - Very comfortable, great location, and the staff were very helpful
- Jon (8/5): Wonderful location, kind host, comfortable bedding, delightful breakfast! -
- Tolly (9/5): Lovely little place with wonderful proprietors - The proprieters are super friendly and extremely helpful. The lady in particular gave lots of excellent advice about hikes and onsens in the area, including tickets for free entry to the public baths. The room was large and very well presented in a japanese style. Location is close to cable cars and is fairly quiet and peaceful. The breakfast was delicious and aesthetic (its a western style with meats, toast, jam, yoghurt and salad). Nothing major. I would say the breakfast was a probably a little pricey relative to what you got. There being only one bathroom on the lower floor was a nuisance, especially if you're on the top floor, but again these are minor issues.
- Anni (9/5): Superb - The staff was helpful and kind. The room was clean and comfortable, and the location was not too far from the bus terminal. The room did not have proper AC, only a small fan.
- Johannes (10/5): Great place to stay, great staff, very fair prices - Everything very clean. Very large room for single or 2 persons, can probably fit a whole family. Keiko was super nice and helpful and had great suggestions for restaurants. There’s just a lot of attention to every detail overall. The toilets even had the highest quality toilet paper I’ve ever seen in Japan😀 The price in summer/off season was very fair.
There is no AC but it should unusually not be needed. Even when it was 37 degree in Tokyo it was only 25 in Zao onsen. Note that widows are only covered with traditional paper walls, so it will get quite bright after sunrise (which can be wie early).
The location is probably great for the winter. For the onsen experience in summer, the location is a bit away from the city center and public baths. Nevertheless zao onsen is quite compact and you can easily reach everything by foot.
- Lawrence (10/5): Exceptional - The host and attentive care was great! Very helpful with breakfast and scheduling activities and finding things to eat. Very kind and easy access to Mt. Zao and Onsen
- Tien (10/5): Exceptional - The owners are super friendly and gentle, everything is clean and tidy.
The breakfast is awesome! We had a really pleasant time there!
Also the location is convenient, hope to come back soon :)
- Jane (9/5): A great place to stay near the lifts and close walk to a nice onsen. - They got us discounted rentals and lift pass. I found the bed hard but I asked for a futon to put on it, and it was comfortable with the futon.
- Weichia (9/5): Superb - Great location, just 1 min walk to the cable car station and 30s walk to ski-rental shop. The hotel provided the rental discount coupon, only 2500 yen per day!
- Nat (10/5): Love this place. We have fantastic stay in Zao onsen. Definitely be back again. - Clean room, warm, and cozy. Perfect breakfast for our ski days. N/A
- Chinavon (10/5): Exceptional - Very good loacation 3min walking to lift.
- Ivan (9/5): Superb - Near gondola no.1 and 3, very close.
- Anna (10/5): Amazing accomodation and omotenashi in Zao! - If only I could rate the hotel more than a 5 star, I will. 1. The owner/host both are so accommodating, helpful and is super kind. I experiences the real Japan omotenashi (hospitality) thru them. Especially the lady owner, she goes a long way to make your stay comfortable and as convenient as it is. She even help call a reservatuon for taxi.
2. The accommodation feels homey. Clean, comfortable and spacious. I slept in a Japanese style room that has futon and Kotatsu. The kotatsu is so comfortable that you dont want to get off them. The Heating is also excellent so the room is warm.
3. The room is equipped with air cleaner, fridge, tv & there is also available himidifier that you can use if needed. Basic amenities are provided too and a yukata. There is a common toilet on the second floor and so as the basement. Microwave is also available for use if you warm your food and the owner can lend you plates and utensils.
4. The nearest onsen is 3 minutes by foot and the owner will give you the 100¥ coupon discount if you use the nearest day onsen spa.
5. The location is perfect just a minute walk to the main ropeway station that’ll take you to the snow monster. 5 minutes walk to the convenience store, 7 minutes walk to the bus terminal and has few good restaurants around.
6. The breakfast is also delicious and hearty. The hotel has big dry room for your ski/snowboard gears and cheaper ski lift tickets if you buy from the hotel.
I highly recommend this place and I will definitely come back again next winter season. Nothing.
- Porter (10/5): Exceptional - The location is amazing for skiing. The staff are amazing. The food was amazing. Some better pillows was my only worry.

Have to share toilet and bath but it is expected as clearly stated.

Wifi at 3rd floor is quite slow
- Yue (8/5): Very good -
- Serene (10/5): lovely ladyboss and nice location - location is very good, right outside the ropeway and chairlifts. ladyboss is super friendly and helpful. i wasnt well and skipped breakfast, she hand grated apples and gave me an energy drink to help my indigestion! I'm really grateful for her help and concern. she also gave us ticket to the public onsen. 😍 thank you so much, we had a wonderful time. our room light is just a little too dim but all good. :)
- Casper (10/5): Convenient location with really helpful staff. - Breakfast was buffet and had a variety of items
- パベル (10/5): Great place to stay for a skiing vacation. Excellent location. Awesome breakfast and dinner. Definitely will stay here a - Very kind and attentive staff. Excellent location. Nothing to point out.
- Valerie (9/5): Comfortable room with comfortable beds, the loveliest host. - Very convenient location (less than 5 mins walk) to the ropeway, and also near ski/snowboard rental shops. The host of the accommodation is the sweetest lady. I injured my knee while skiing and she was the most caring figure ever, even passed me some muscle patches, cooling patches and ice packs to help with the injury. She was also extremely accommodating to help us book restaurants and taxis.
- Zac (10/5): Exceptional - The location was fantastic for skiing and the hosts were wonderful and accommodating.
My kids really enjoyed the the hotel.
- Feong (9/5): Overall , we are satisfied with the hospitality, cleanliness and locality. We will definitely return next trip next year - Super friendly, thoughtful and well run. The breakfast and dinner were healthy , tasty and perfectly prepared . We preferred brightly lit room, at night room 301 is a little dim for us. Everything else was good.
- Szzhua (10/5): Wonderful - The hostess was incredibly warm and welcoming, the room was very comfortable, and the location was also quite good! It was a truly wonderful experience!
- Felicia (9/5): very pleasant - good location very clean no private bath

- Woon (7/5): Good - Staff is so helpful
- Chud (10/5): Exceptional -
- Paola (10/5): Exceptional -
- Stevie (9/5): Great - our favourite host in all of Japan - This is a fairly simple guest house, but the host is absolutely wonderful. We could not have been looked after better, and this made it our favourite place to stay during a 2 week trip through Japan. We didn't dine there in the evening (we had only booked for 1 night) but wished we had, as the breakfast we had was incredible, and I've no doubt the dinner would have been just as good. Highly recommended. In addition, the property is well located, within easy walking distance of everything in the village.
- Al (9/5): Nice and helpful staff - The staff was very helpful. She gave us advice and discount coupons for different places around Zao. The bedding was also nice and comfortable considering we reserved a Tatami room.
- C (6/5): Pleasant - The staff was amazing and very friendly to the guests. The location is right next to two lifts and it is very convenient. The bed was very hard and the traditional blanket has 5 layers. The room light was dimmed.
