Guest Reviews
- Sylvia (6/5): - I will like a cleaner room, I understand is kind of a self service place, but the sheets smell awfully I one of our beds, so I was cold the whole night, because I can't stand the smell.. It's a vintage place and near to everything but cleanliness it's not at the place it should be.
- Brenda (10/5): - We stopped at Fort Davis on our trip to Big Bend National Park. Our accommodations were great. We loved being downtown and walkable. Would highly recommend a stop over here.
- Christy (8/5): - Stay was fine. It’s a unique old hotel so if you mind creaking wood floors then this is not for you. Unfortunately the soda fountain downstairs is no longer operating but they have a pool table and a ping pong table and games for the kids. Beds are comfy!
- Alma (6/5): - The location was great to walk to restaurants but everything closes early. Limited dining areas.
- Marianne (6/5): Twilight Room - The room was spacious and quiet, the bed comfortable, a comfortable bench at the foot of the bed. It has a table and 2 chairs but they are high and the table small. There is no desk or other table for a laptop. Nice tv and channels. The bathroom is fine, tub shower. Nice large bath towels. There is service only if you call. The floor creeks. Be aware that the rooms are on the 2nd floor and there are MANY steps though they are deep and sturdy . The owner has set up a unique digital lock system to enter the building. Be sure to keep the directions handy on your phone. Parking on the Main Street was not a problem.
- Robert (2/5): - Bullet holes, broken bed, squeaky floors, hotel's mail box full, and other fun things whats not to love here.
- Tonyia (10/5): - Quaint town. Lots to do in Big Bend area
- Cesar (4/5): - Just wasn’t impressed, disappointed with the condition of the building
- Heather (10/5): - There are no staff but they figured out a system and it works. The beds are wonderful and it was really quiet and clean. Would stay again for sure!!
- Fernando (10/5): - We had the place to ourselves, so we truly enjoyed ourselves having the place. We played games downstairs and played music. Then, we had a great night’s sleep.
We highly recommend this place!
- Wesley (10/5): - Room was clean! Very cozy and comfortable!
- Sam (10/5): - Wonderful time, the downstairs area was the best my kids loved it.
- Verified traveler (2/5): Hotel smells like something died. Run away. - The hotel is upstairs, and the smell downstairs was horrible. It smelled like something had died. I tried emailing the support email, but did not receive a reply. I emailed the email address in the room, but the email rejected. We stayed the first night because we arrived late and could not find another place to stay. The hotel is self check-in & out. We were sick the next morning, We left as soon as we could. The smell was even worse in the morning. I still have not received a reply 4 days later.
- Mike (10/5): - Great hotel. Really fun.
- Thomas (10/5): Cool place - Very cool building, loved the set up.
- Joel (10/5): - Always enjoy staying here. Very unique place.
- Brian (10/5): - What a pleasant surprise! All inns should have this type of checkin: Go in the side door, give your room, and done! The place was eerily quiet (not much happening in Ft Davis at the start of the week), cold AC and a beautiful restored room with original flooring.
Unfortunately, we didn’t have time to partake of any of the board games or the pool table, ping pong or foosball, but maybe next time!
- James (10/5): Great Experience - It was a great experience. The bed was comfy and the room.was perfect. We loved the Rustic look. Made us feel like we were in the wild west.
- Scott (10/5): - Staff went out of their way to accommodate us and ensure we had a great stay after we made a mistake with our booking dates. We enjoyed all of the space and family games, not too mention the billiard, foosball and ping pong tables. Area around the hotel was very nice as well - the El Salvadorian food truck was amazing. The hotel is super convenient to McDonalds observatory, and we enjoyed the many fireflies along the road at night. We will definitely stay here again.
- Sharon (10/5): - Was wonderful! Everything you need. I would stay again. Only thing that started bothering me was the creaky original wood flooring. But that is the beauty of this original old place.
- Stacy (10/5): - Cute place and fun to have a place to relax and hang out!
- Jonathan (8/5): - Funky set up with no staff on site. Fun activities with pool, ping pong and foosball in the now closed drug store with rooms above. Clean and convenient, would book again
- elizabeth (10/5): - Comfortable and affordable
- Karen (6/5): - The ice cream shop downstairs is no longer open which was disappointing but there are games, pool and ping pong. One of us also had a paranormal experience which was a little creepy! Over all the stay was ok and served its purpose.
- lesley (10/5): - The hotel was amazing!!! I was so happy with the original setup of the room and all the unique features in it.
- Norman (10/5): - It is an unique place.
- Denise (8/5): - The room was great. Comfortable bed. Creaky floors. Internet connection great. But despite the description, more than half the town was closed. Only a couple of options for food. The restaurant we wanted to go to was closed. Not much to do. Paid too much for none of the advertised amenities.
- PERRIN (6/5): need more assistance - .room is nice but non-responsive contact for help. Difficulty with the TV startup. AC filters filthy and cleaned them myself. This will cost the owner big money neglecting maintenance
- casey (10/5): Great stay at Ft Davis Drug Store! - Room was very clean. The hotel is simple, nothing overly complex. The check-in instructions are emailed ahead of time, easy to follow to get in. The floors do creak, but the building is old and it adds to the charm of the place. Sad that the cafe downstairs didn't make it - maybe one day someone will be able to get it going again! Would stay here again!
- Ken (8/5): Looking back is sometimes fun - That the building is from yesteryear, there's no question, it only adds to ambiance of the experience. We were surprised and disappointed the ground floor restaurant and soda fountain were no longer in business, but the upstairs space to gather, play cards, visit or pick out the LP's of your choice (which we did with Elvis) made up for the missing soda fountain. The facility was very clean, rooms tastefully decorated, each in its own era and the kingsized mattress was probably the most comfortable sleep I've had in a long time. The bed linens allowed you to sink in and wander off to dreamland. Bath towels and accessories were huge and plush. The only disappointment in the bath was the shower; the shower head was too low and slow, hitting me in the chest and allowed only a faint spray of water. The room could be improved with small table next to the easy chair; you know, to put your coffee on while you're reading. We enjoyed our stay and would certainly return if chances allow.
- Chris (10/5): Well worth it - Great rom with pine wood floors and furnished with antiques. Very comfortable
- 365EricW (2/5): Extremely Unaccommodating and Rude – Stay Elsewhere - Our experience with this property was deeply disappointing—not only was our refund request denied, but the response was laced with condescension and zero empathy. Instead of any effort to understand our situation, we were met with a lecture about fairness to them while completely dismissing fairness to the guest. Their message made it clear: they’d rather keep your money than show basic hospitality or decency.
We canceled with nearly a week’s notice—not a last-minute no-show—but were told it was “unlikely the room would rebook” and that it wouldn’t be “fair” to offer a refund. That level of rigidity, coupled with a passive-aggressive tone and a “we don’t care if you come back” attitude, says all you need to know.
If you value respectful communication, flexibility, or even the slightest customer care, stay anywhere else. This is not a place that values its guests—only your money.
- Joel (10/5): - Great little spot. Pleasantly surprised by the room.
- Casey (10/5): - Quiet, rustic, overall pleasant.
- Stephen (8/5): - Unusual check in process
- David (10/5): Enjoyed century old style - We enjoyed this rustic place with mostly a self-service operation. Not your typical commodity hotel!
Beds were comfortable, bathroom clean, good hot water.
Creaky wooden floors make the ambiance!
Gathering room with a good assortment of vinyl disc for all tastes and ages. Good for socializing with other guests!
Authentic if not old fashion facilities make this an interesting place.
- Cheryl (8/5): - Loved this place, very quaint. Very clean with plenty towels and sundries. The restaurant is closed but there’s a pool table, ping pong and foosball table downstairs. Rooms are upstairs, cool seating area there too. Even the squeaky wood floors added to the ambiance. Microwaves and coffee pots available. Each room had its own AC/heat unit. The only thing that could improve is communication with the owner/manager. We wanted to stay another night and weren’t able to reach anyone.
- Cheryl (10/5): - Loved our rooms (Hummingbird and Rancher) so much we stayed another night. Very comfortable, plenty hot water, room temp easy to control. Couple good places to eat nearby, limited hours tho. If there’s any constructive criticism, would have been helpful to get a reply from host via text, email, or ph call. We’re already planning a second trip.
- Donna (10/5): - Pet friendly
- gary (6/5): - Upon our arrival we were expecting the soda fountain and restaurant to be open. Apparently, the hotel is for sale. This left us with few eating options. Somewhat disappointed.
- Samantha (10/5): - We loved our stay and hope to be back!
- Dan (10/5): - Great place to stay for a night or two
- Karen (10/5): Quaint and comfortable. - Very easy!! No reception but we were contacted by email with easy entrance directions. Older building so you can hear people when they walk down the hall but it wasn't a problem. Drug Store is closed but the pool and foosball tables were available for a fun game. Bed was really comfortable!! Great location, we walked to grocery, liquor store and explored park by the courthouse. It’s not a fancy new hotel but we loved that It felt like we were back in time.
- Ricardo (10/5): - Love the detail to the place. Very quiet and rooms are awesome!
- Evelyn (8/5): - It’s quiet and peaceful but, the television is not the best place to watch anything
- Joseph (6/5): Couple trip - I was in aware that If you book this hotel, you must watch for an email for check-in instructions. You will not deal with a human. I’m not a fan of virtual check-in and check-outs…
- Michael (8/5): Nice place to stay - Nice clean hotel right in the main area of tiny, little Fort Davis. We got a code emailed the night before to let ourselves in. Places to eat were right next door or across the road. Note that they all close at 8 or 9PM. Super easy drive from the hotel to the state park, national park and observatory. The only downsides were that the floors were especially squeaky. It's a great old building, so it comes with that sort of thing. It just made it impossible to go to the bathroom without waking your partner up. There are two big public areas, but no one was using them, and we were not entirely sure if we were encouraged to do that since the noise may or may not have disturbed other guests. Some sort of signage or a note saying that the games downstairs went with the hotel would've been helpful. Certainly a great option in Fort Davis.
- joooolesm (8/5): Comfortable, interesting character, decent price -- but those stairs ... (yikes). - This was an older property, kind of neglected to be sure (checking in is by access code), but also interesting for its character (which you have to look carefully around to appreciate). This was a comfortable stay, with all the needed room amenities, certainly for a reasonable price, and right across from a surprisingly nice restaurant. One big disadvantage: Having to negotiate a very tall, very narrow, exhausting set of stairs to get to the rooms.
- Adrienne (10/5): - This was a perfect spot for us. We walked to dinner and breakfast; was close to the McDonald Observatory, and had so much charm. It would also be great for a family. There was a fun game area that, if we’d had more time, would have been good entertainment. Don’t hesitate to book here.
- John (10/5): - A wonderful place to stay.. Full of character. The instructions were coming in were well done.
- Sandy (10/5): Quaint and unique but worth the stay! - First time to visit Fort Davis and wasn't sure what to expect but we were very pleased with the The Drug Store Hotel. Room and beds were very comfortable and clean and quiet. Bathroom towels were wonderful. Lovely sitting area next to dining area with beautiful decor. Main hallway decorated with vintage furniture. Game room downstairs with pool table, ping pong and other games. Great restaurant/bar and coffee shop right across the street and many little shops along the main road. Would definitely recommend giving it a try!
- Robert (10/5): Drugstore Hotel - We were a one night stay for the star party. We were skeptical at first. But one we entered we were very pleased. Huge room, great beds. I will stay again someday.
- John (10/5): - Very pleasant accommodations, comfortable bed and rustic setting. I love the western decor of the room and nostalgic setting of the hotel. No front desk was not a problem at all.
- MARCO (10/5): Family trip - The hotel is for sale but the room are clean and even no one is around, it feels well maintained
- Heather (2/5): Very Uncomfortable Bed - No Sleep - Unfortunately the bed was very uncomfortable and lumpy. The sheets were also plastic...I wasn't able to sleep both nights, and I requested a room transfer on the first day, but I never heard back from the hotel.
The shower & sink drains were clogged, so I was standing in my dirty water which is not pleasant. The bathroom fan was super loud and clearly not working. The floors were very noisy and woke up my husband overnight.
I was disappointed in this stay, and we won't be staying there again.
- Kiyomi (10/5): - Loved this place. Fort Davis was a quiet town. Wish more was going on for meals but will definitely be back.
- Ruben (10/5): - It was nice place to stay for the night in order to go to the observatory
- Lia (10/5): - Very cool place, they did a great job decorating it. Very comfortable and convenient.
- Terri (10/5): - Our room was super nice and very clean. Check in/out was easy. Would stay here again!
- Deiderich (10/5): - We enjoyed our stay, will definitely go again!
- Kimberly (10/5): - I have stayed here before about 20 years ago! Brought my husband and kiddos and I thoroughly enjoyed our time here!!
- sheila (10/5): Romance in Fort Davis - It was absolutely fantastic. So romantic. Our favorite hotel stay ever. And we've been together 46 years! Beds, linens, pillows and towels were lovely. So romantic. It felt like we were living in one of the historical novels we enjoy listening too.
We paired our stay with dinner out. A star party at the Mcdonald Observatory and an early morning visit to the Chihuahuan Desert Nature Center.
Next time we will plan for a longer stay at the hotel. Those lovely tables by the window upstairs were calling for a puzzle session.
- Luis (6/5): - The room and bedding was cute. Very on theme. It just felt terribly lonely to stay there with no staff in sight. They were only a phone call away but that felt intrusive. The property is listed as for sale and it feels like the current owner has already given up on hospitality.
- Jack (8/5): - It was an historic Drug Store that has been converted to a hotel upstairs.
It's still in transition on the main floor and I'm certain that once it completes it's rejuvenation it will provide all the facilities required for anyone wanting to stay in Fort Davis.
It has a lovely common area on the second floor to relax. Additionally, it has a kettle, coffee maker, microwave and toaster in the common area to enable the guests to prepare a light breakfast. Plus the host provides a lovely selection of teas plus sugar etc for the guests to enjoy.
Plus a freezer for anything that guests need to keep frozen.
We enjoyed out stay and would recommend to others.
- mark (10/5): - Clean quiet and loved the games
- Verified traveler (10/5): - I highly recommend this place, after a long trip the cold AC and very comfortable bed was awesome. A very neat place out in west Texas
- Elisabeth (10/5): - We loved the location. It gave us easy access to the Davis Mountains and was very convenient to return to at midnight after the Star Party at the McDonald Observatory.
- Michael (10/5): - I highly recommend this place, after a long trip the cold AC and very comfortable bed was awesome. A very neat place out in west Texas
- Daniel (10/5): So Charming! - We thoroughly enjoyed the charm of this property. It is definitely unique and I only wish we had more time to enjoy it. One night was not enough. There is a game room dow stairs and the little we got use it due to our schedule was great. It’s so great to be able to spend time playing with our kids. The beds were super comfortable. The mini fridge in the room is definitely a mini fridge but we made it work. But it has a dedicated freezer that works amazing for refreshing your cooler packs. If we make it out this way again we would definitely stay here again. The only downside would be if you have trouble going up stairs. Do to the age of the building you have to go up stairs to get to the second floor where all the rooms are located. But if you have no problems with stairs this is an amazing place to stay with elementary age or older kids.
- Rose (6/5): - The old drug store itself was cool. And yes, the floors definitely squeaked, I’m a light sleeper so if anyone got up to use the restroom, I woke up. Hand prints all over the mirror on our armoire, a child’s I assume because of the location on which they were. Very dusty and seemed unkept. If your going to have guests at least have the surroundings a bit more tidy.
- Rita (10/5): - Great all around
- Zachery (6/5): - Didn’t like check in situation
- M (10/5): - Nice owners, easy check in, and quiet location.
- JOHN (10/5): - Unique stay at old drugstore converted to a hotel. Has lots of common area we enjoyed including games even Foos-ball and ping pong. Old and cluttered with creaking floors but interesting to us. We enjoyed our stay.
- 272glenne (4/5): Dirty & Tired - The descriptions one can find of this place are really good, the reality not so. We were expecting a quaint soda fountain place with rooms above. The soda fountain place as closed. Yes there was pool and table tennis (which our boys loved and hence the 2 star rather than one review) but not what we were promised.
There were bullet holes (I assume) in the front window. The room was filthy. THe bedding was mouldy and stained, there was huge amounts of dust and detritus on all surfaces and when an 11 year old boy refuses to use the bath because it's too dirty you know you're in trouble!
I can see that someone is trying to renovate this place and make a something of it, but the basics, ie. cleanliness, just aren't being done.
- Cindy (10/5): - A hidden treasure above a closed drugstore. Perfect for a family gathering on your next visit to west texas. The game room is well stocked with a comfortable bed and amenities.
- A6885NXdanielb (10/5): Highly recommended stay made my time in Fort Davis very comfortable - A cozy historic 2-story hotel with modern amenities and unique character. Homey decor and authentic creaky wood panel floors from the hotel's days as a pharmacy and parlor. Guest rooms are on 2nd floor (stairs only). Guests have access to microwave and refrigerator/freezer as well as common lounging and dining areas. Self check-in at any time. Overall a comfortable and very memorable stay at a reasonable price.
- Sightsee18361144590 (10/5): History, culture and hospitality - You should stay here! If you want to emerge in west Texas history, culture and hospitality then this is the place. I have the privilege of meeting the owner who is a very nice lady, she keeps the place clean. The sheets, towels and toiletries are of high quality. We really enjoyed our stay here.
- kelly053 (6/5): Quirky local color - While this hotel is basically clean and comfortable (what more can you ask for?), it's more like staying in your aunt's 1950s home with a few modern upgrades (wifi, channel TV, instant hot water). We had a good night's rest as the kingsize bed was very comfortable indeed. Note that the walls are very thin, and we heard the one other guest come in quite late; at least he did not turn the TV on loud). We salute the hosts for investing a lot of love and money in the Old Drugstore; they've made it as welcome and as interesting as possible. And they're very responsive to your emails.
- chrin22 (10/5): What a great find! - We had planned a trip to Balmorhea State Park to go to the awesome spring-fed swimming hole, but we weren't pleased with any of the hotel/motel options in the immediate area. Fort Davis is a much bigger town, and is only about 30 minutes away from Balmorhea, so we looked there. We found this great "new" (really old) hotel!
It is an old drug store (hence the name) that was later changed to a restaurant and then a "soda fountain," and is now a hotel. The entire lower floor is basically a giant party/game room. It has a pool table, a ping pong table, a dart board, a foosball table, couches and chairs, a soda fountain bar with a 75" TV, a few booth style tables, and male/female restrooms.
Upstairs is another lounge with more tables/chairs, a comfy seating area, books and cards, and a record player with records. Off the lounge area is a hallway with six rooms. Each room has different decorations and a private bathroom. We booked Room 5 "Traveller" and the two Queen beds were comfy, and large enough for the four of us (me, my wife, and our two teens) easily. We happened to be the only hotel guests that night, which was not surprising for a Sunday night in the middle of July.
The website says they installed new Heat and AC throughout the facility in April 2023, and I believe it. We were very comfortable, and if you have ever been to West Texas in Summer you know how important this is!
This is a business owned by a local family, and we love supporting places like this. There is no staff on-site so they have self-checkin, and we had absolutely no problem with this. We had easy access without any problems, but if we had a problem they told us they would be readily available for in-person help.
I don't know when they first opened as a hotel, but there is still some work being done in the downstairs game/party room; this was not a problem for us, but potentially could be an issue if you have toddlers or young children.
Overall, we found a true gem. I have no hesitation in recommending the Fort Davis Drug Store Hotel. If we ever go back to this part of West Texas (maybe to visit Big Bend or McDonald Observatory), then we will definitely stay here!
