Guest Reviews
- Basile (9/5): -
- Ronit (10/5): - Wonderful setting. Great private onsens with thermal spring water from the mountains - 2 wonderful outdoor, 3 indoor. Onsens are opened 24h. Large traditional Japanese rooms..Very good traditional Japanese meals (breakfast, dinner). Very nice host who speaks some English
- Chantal (10/5): The kind of place you don't want to leave - EVERYTHING!!! This ryokan felt like a little hidden sanctuary in the mountains. So peaceful, surrounded by nature, and full of warmth in every detail. The private onsens were all beautiful, but the outdoor ones were truly unforgettable. There’s something magical about relaxing in hot water while surrounded by the mountains and the sounds of nature. Takizawa and his family were incredibly kind, welcoming, and always ready to help with genuine care. You can really feel the love and attention they put into this place.
Both breakfast and dinner were absolutely amazing. Every dish was delicious, and even the presentation on the beautiful plates made the experience feel special and thoughtful. More than just a stay, this felt like a place where I could truly slow down, breathe, and let go for a while. I left feeling relaxed, recharged, and very grateful to have experienced it. Honestly, the only bad part was not staying longer because they were fully booked afterwards. If you see a room available here, just book it right away, especially with the half board option. The food is amazing and such a big part of the experience. This place is really something special.
- Maurice (10/5): My stay here was a highlight of my trip! - The staff is so welcoming and friendly!
- Jildou (10/5): Best place to experience Japanese alps - The food was soooo good, the location, the onsen and the staff was terrific. Booking.com states it's shared showers, but these are the showers in the private onsen! So no need to worry, this is the best place to experience Japan!
- Jose (10/5): -
- Max (10/5): Staying at Minshuku Takizawa was one of our top two highlights of our two week trip to Japan - Our stay here was perfect. The food was delicious (and beautifully presented!) The onsens were incredible - so warm and the views of the surrounding mountains from the outdoor onsens were unmatched. The staff was so friendly and accommodating - truly went above and beyond to make our stay so memorable. The lodging was so cozy and comfortable! Not necessarily a dislike as the property did nothing wrong here, but I would encourage those staying here to opt for a rental car vs relying the bus to and from Takayama. It's about 1.5-2 hour bus ride and this stop is a bit more remote with only 3 pickups per day heading to Takayama. (around 6am, 9am and 1pm). Just something to be aware of!
- Remco (10/5): Relaxing stay in natural surroundings, private onsen, excellent meals. - Wonderful place, lovely owners. Book with diner, you will not regret it.

A minha noiva é celíaca.
- Yohan (10/5): Amazing stay - We had an absolutely perfect stay and were 100% satisfied from start to finish. The staff were incredibly kind, attentive, and made us feel truly welcome throughout our visit.
Both dinner and breakfast were absolutely delicious, with great variety and high-quality ingredients — a real highlight of our stay. The accommodation itself was very comfortable, clean, and full of charm.
We also really enjoyed the onsen facilities, both indoor and outdoor, which were relaxing and beautifully maintained — the perfect way to unwind.
We only stayed for one night, but it was a fantastic experience and we would definitely love to come back. Highly recommended!
Alles was top!
- Forrest (10/5): - Proximity to the big mountains and the great food
- Oh Mei Ling (10/5): - Room is big, floor is warm at winter. Dinner and breakfast are so good. Nothing
- Sio Long (10/5): - The view
- Carolyn (10/5): Sensational food, a very quiet relaxing stay deep in the countryside. - In such a peaceful spot in the mountains to unwind… bus was easy to catch to arrive at the property. The food was sensational, every bite was prepared with care and was extremely tasty. Very close to Shinhotaka Ropeway. The outdoor onsens were also wonderful. Just that I didn’t stay longer :)

- IRAI (10/5): - We absolutely loved our experience at Minshuku Takizawa! Great place, clean, spacious, amazing private Onsen, the best dinner and breakfast experience. The person looking after us was super nice and helpful, and so polite. We definitely recommend, would love to come back!!
- Daniel (10/5): - PHENOMEMAL. Absolutely phenomenal. This place is the real deal. Amazing, large rooms, 5 separate onsens (indoor and out), delicious meals, perfectly curated shared spaces, easy access by bus, and incredible, incredible hosts. By far my favorite stay from all of my trips to Japan. Utterly worth the trip up. Wow. All was perfect.
- Pham (10/5): Amazing, memorable - Private onsen and absolutely amazing half board. Must book.
- Beverley (9/5): -
- Amit (10/5): -
- Michal Malka (10/5): Amazing and special place - Amazing hospitality, very kind hosts! food was amazing!
- Joshua (10/5): Just beautiful from start to finish, couldn’t recommend this place more if you want to feel like you’re at home surround - Wow, what an amazing stay we had here from start to finish. We stumbled on this place last minute when we decided we wanted a little more time in the mountains and I am so grateful that we did, it was the most perfect hidden gem for our stay. Warm, kind, welcoming and genuinely caring staff that make the stay feel like you’re at home, they couldn’t have done more for us. They took us to the ropeway in the car when it was raining, always helped with our bags, dropped us off at the shuttle. The food was amazing and such good value for money and of course I can’t leave this review and not mention the onsen. Just beautiful from start to finish, couldn’t recommend this place more if you want to feel like you’re at home surrounded by warm, kind human beings. Thankyou so much.
- Jocelyn (10/5): - 5 private onsen baths .... 2 outside.... just for the 8 rooms
The host ..the chef ... the waitress ... possibly all doing a bit of everything... were fabulous ... friendly ... interesting... proud of their family ryoken ....
The food was fantastic.... the best breakfast ever .... supper ... a joint best ...
And the valley is soooo beautiful ...
A traditional place with separate shared but immaculate toilets.... no showers except in the onsen ... but build by the current hosts father 80 years ago ... but I suspect based on timbers or a building far older ..... it felt like japanese history alive today Only that we couldn't stay longer
- Maren (10/5): Great experience! - A nice japanese experience! The ryokan was really nice, there are 5 different private onsens. The staff were so nice and helpful! Everything was perfect
- masahide (9/5): -
- Bodil (10/5): Authentic Japanese ryokan, excellent food, lovely experience - Authentic Japanese ryokan, excellent food, lovely experience Nothing
- Pablo Bähler (10/5): - The staff went out of their way to make our stay as good as possible. They even cooked for us even if we didn't make a reservation.(Our mistake) All in all great.
- Manuela (10/5): We can only recommend staying there if you want to recharge and relax. - The hosts were exceptionally helpful. You get private access to the Onsen which are very well maintained. And the traditional Japanese food was delicious.
- Eberhard (10/5): A great opportunity for everyone who loves unique accomodation - Everybody including the owners are so nice and helpful. They speak sufficient English to get along well.
The Onsen baths are great, private use, the outside Onsen under the clear sky is a hit. Breakfast was phantastic, japanese style but followed by an excellent expresso coffee and a Panna Cotta at the end - can it be better? no!
For good reason (the quality and freshness of the wonderful food) you are asked to make a reservation for dinner and/or breakfast. Though on the other side of the street is a small Cafe and Shop supplying everything you might need.
It will probably difficult to get there with public transport - so coming by car is better. It is quite a bit away from everything.
Therefore one of the trailheads to climb Mount Yakedake is just 1 km away from the Hotel.
- Ray (10/5): It was perfect. It was ideal. - The staff, the accommodations, the location, the food, the special events (!) were all the best we experienced in Japan Nothing
- Tsvi (10/5): Highly recommend - Very nice and comfortable room with separate living room
Amazing traditional dinner
- Ruxian (9/5): A Wonderful and relaxing onsen stay - The house is super comfortable and beautiful. The dinner and breakfast was the best in our trip to Japan. The 24h outdoor private onsen (there are 2) provided a good relaxing experience. The host is very kind and always ready to help. Location in a beautiful little village near Shinhotaka ropeway and can be reached by bus. The toilet sometimes flushed by itself making some noises that can disturb sleeping;
- Chavinpat (10/5): Exceptional -
- Claudia (10/5): Could not recommend it more- it was a very special experience. - The property is very beautiful, the furniture is lovely, the atmosphere is inviting and warm. The entire stay felt like a big hug- the owner is one of the kindest people I have met in my life and went above and beyond for us. Could not recommend it more. I hope to come back one day, it was my favorite stay in Japan by far. Nothing I can think of.
- Vidigueira (10/5): Amazing host, delicious food, beautiful onsen spots outdoors - Amazing host, delicious food, beautiful outdoor onsen spots, and super close to the Shinhotaka Ropeway. Loved it.
- Anna (10/5): Relaxing place, lovely details, delicious food and attentive personnel! - The dinner was amazing - very delicious, thoughtfully plated and almost too much food for one person. The breakfast was very tasty too and I appreciated a lot that for breakfast in my part of the dining are the table and the chairs were repositioned so that I could look outside of the window to the maple trees and mountains while enjoying my breakfast.
The outdoor onsen was beautiful, and in general the interior and details in the decoration were thoughtfully made.
The accommodation keeper was extremely attentive and gave me a ride to the bus stop when leaving. When arriving to the hotel he picked me up as he saw me walking on the road and I hadn’t checked my messages where he said he could pick me up from the main road bus stop. Not all the buses drive past here so there’s a bit over 1km walk uphill from the main road BUT they offer to pick you up so that’s no issue.
- Parisa (7/5): Beautiful and clean. Not comfortable for sleeping. - Very beautiful and clean rooms, facilities in a beautiful location perfect for hiking and a few nights stay far from the hustle and bustle of the city.
The whole interior design was beautiful and super comfortable during the day but not ideal for sleeping.
The outdoor onsens are beautiful with natural hot springs flowing all the time meaning that the water in the bath is changed continuously. The blankets were too bulky and thick and the cover was taken off because of its improper design. Very uncomfortable. We couldn’t sleep well.
The walls are thin you could easily get disturbed by banging the doors from neighbours.
The windows have no curtains or blinds so the room gets bright quite early in the morning even in November at 6am.
The onset was a bit slippery. Not sure if it’s because of the sulphurous hot spring or not regularly getting cleaned.
- Rai (10/5): Exceptional -
- Jiani (10/5): Peaceful ryokan with awesome onsens - Spacious room and very comfortable tatami, clean and well organised onsen, we really enjoyed the outdoor ones! The dinner and breakfast are very delicious and adequate! The hotel owner drove us to the bus stop also. Thank you and this is one of our best stays in Japan!! Everything was just perfect
- Kasia (10/5): An amazing little gem in stunning location - Lovely ryokan in beautiful location with very friendly and helpful staff and delicious food. The outdoor onsens are amazing Nothing!
- Bastien (10/5): Exceptional - I found this place last minute and glad I did. The whole place is beautiful and cosy, the rooms are comfortable, the outdoor onsen was absolutely wonderful, accessible 24/7, and the breakfast was delicious and worth every penny.
- Doron (10/5): Exceptional - The hospitality and kindness of the owners were exceptional. We felt so comfortable, pampered and seen.
Dinner was the best we've had in japan, creative, delicious and huge
Breakfast was amazing too
The private onsens are big, and the view from the outdoor ones is stunning
Cannot recommend enough
- Yaniv (10/5): Exceptional -
- Coral (10/5): One of the best ever.... - ALL.
WOW!!!!!!!
- Djkeenan (10/5): Onsen under the stars - Staff spoke good English and was very charming.
Baths were incredible with a nice view of the stars and little light pollution.
Was very quiet and futons were comfortable.
Room felt like a home not a sterile hotel room as it had lots of extras like comfy sofa and reading light.
- Henry (10/5): Exceptional - Very warm hospitality and amazing service.
We were helped with additional maps and recommendations. We were also helped with catching our bus.
The outdoor and indoor onsen were lovely.
Dinner was delicious. Fresh fish and other dishes. Beautifully cooked and presented.
We loved the tatami rooms we stayed in. Highly recommended!
- Mandy (10/5): Exceptional - Excellent food, great hospitality, relaxing environment Nothing to indicate
- Josh (10/5): Exceptional - Hotspring options are great. Indoors or outdoors and all options are private. It was not very busy when I was there but I'm sure it gets very busy seasonally It was far from anything but that's part of the appeal. However the Shinhokata Outdoor Onsen was closed for the winter when I was there in April and the Ropeway was 1 hour walk away. Still very happy with my stay.
- Jricardog (10/5): A taste of paradise - I think here we had the best stay in our life :) A beautiful, traditional place in the heart of Japanese Alps. Very comfortable, clean and atmospheric. The food that was served was the highest level, delicious and the best we had in Japan. There are five private onsens, out of which two are outside to enjoy the nature and relax. We definitely recommend to anybody that would like to experience a real taste of traditional Japan.
- Christel (10/5): Supreme dinner/breakfast and fantastic ourdoor onsen! - When we arrived we were met by the lovely owner who showed us around the place. I don't know if they had a cancellation, but we got upgraded to our own little hut separated from the main house, with private bathroom, living room and upstairs bedroom. They have two outdoor private onsens with breathtaking views of the mountains. We had their dinner and breakfast option and it was absolutely supreme! Nothing, we truly had a fantastic stay here!
- Ana (10/5): Exceptional - This was an amazing stay. The owner (taki zawa) is super nice and helpful. The dinner was delicious (truly) and plentiful! Breakfast as well. The room is comfortable and spacious. The onsen are superb - I will never forget being totally relaxed inside the pool looking through the opened window at the snow falling outside. Everything was amazing. I totally recommend.
- Alexandra (8/5): A special pocket of Japan, with a vast landscape, relaxing onsens and michelin grade Kaiseki - A beautiful & special location. The Onsen options are vast and the stay itself is very special. A memorable experience for sure I recommend you do your research on the area, including making sure you opt to eat at the property. The Kaiseki is excellent quality however there is not much around to eat for lunch if you don't have a car. I highly recommend hiring a car to access this area - it would be very difficult with luggage if you didn't have a car
- Jisun (10/5): Comfortable and peaceful stay - Loved the kindness of the staff the most. There were 3 indoor onsen + 2 outdoor onsen, and all of them were private, which was great. The dinner was additional but you will not regret it!
- Kana (9/5): Cozy stay near Shinhokata ropeway. If you go in early Feb please check out the Igloo Festival (Kamakura Matsuri) right b - The staff and owner were kind and helpful. The baths were really great but the bath water was not properly cleaned.
- Hui (10/5): I will come again - The staff is really nice, the food is yummy. The onsen was great! To be honest, nothing!!!!!
(10/5): Fantastic Japanese style minshuku - Breakfast was very elaborate. The location is easy to find by car. It was great because it was a winter trip, but I think it would be difficult to go if it snowed.
- Rina (10/5): Highlight of our trip! - Staying here was absolutely one of the highlights of our trip to Japan, I couldn't recommend it more highly. First off, the food (and entire dining experience in the old wooden dining room) was some of the best I have ever had, there was an incredible variety of fresh fish, veg and meat for dinner and felt as if we were dining in a very high end, Michelin-quality establishment. I wish we could go back just for this!
The owner was extremely kind and courteous, and even drove us to the nearest bus station allowing us to be more flexible with timings. He has maintained the Minshuku to amazing standards and we couldn't have wished for anything more. Highly appreciated the underfloor heating too.
There were plenty of private onsens to choose from and the ones outside (when it was snowing) were the best we had visited in Japan.
In short, for a relaxing stay in beautiful surroundings, insanely good food and amazing private onsens - definitely don't hesitate to stay here! Nothing
- Han (9/5): Superb -
- Oliver (10/5): Exceptional - The atmosphere was great, the onsens really cosy, and the host and staff were super friendly and caring. Really enjoyed the stay and would definitely come again.
- Lucy (10/5): Highlight of our trip to Japan, a true hidden gem. -
- Grace (7/5): Good -
- Olivier (9/5): We loved it and wished we could have stayed a little longer to explore the forests around. - Takizawa-San is a great host. He really made the stay friendly yet laid-back. The food prepared for us (diner and breakfast) was stunning, and we really loved the feel of the communal dining room. The whole place feels like a home made available for you. The two outdoor onsens are lovely. Just one word of warning: the water was VERY hot!!
- Aine (10/5): Exceptional - This guesthouse was beautiful and in a fantastic location. The private onsen were superb! The breakfast was by far the best meal I ate in Japan. All this, at an extremely reasonable price. I would definitely recommend.
- Ned (10/5): Truly memorable. Incredibly gracious and generous host, wonderful private onsen. Delicious breakfast. - Perfect. Memorable for all the right reasons. My time at Minshuku Takizawa was absolutely amazing.
I booked a solo one night’s stay here on a whim so I could visit Kamikochi nearby, and was extremely impressed by the host and all aspects of the property.
The owner was very understanding and had great communication when organising my late arrival, remembering and greeting me by my name after I arrived at an earlier unplanned time.
He then gave me a tour of the property, showing not one but 5 private onsens, varying in size and location but all easy to access and use with no additional cost.
I used the outdoor onsen at midnight and it was a wonderful introduction to the experience, particularly as I was able to learn the etiquette and process by myself.
My room and sleep were great, the floor was heated naturally due to the hot springs but I could control the temperate of the room with air conditioning.
As a newcomer to a traditional Japanese stay, I really appreciated the owners guidance, even assisting me in wearing a Yakuta when he realised I was unsure about what to do. I could tell he was putting in a lot of effort to explain everything in English, which I was not expecting but really appreciated.
For only 1100 yen I had an amazing traditional breakfast which was a memorable experience in itself - served a variety of food and drink while looking out at the mountain view. I strongly recommend getting it!
I had told the owner the night before in passing that I would be travelling to Kamikochi the next day, and when I checked out the he had maps ready for me and explained the route I could take, highlights to see and even warned me about the weather. I had intended to take the bus, but he even arranged for a staff member to drive me to the bus station directly, saving me at least half an hour and a bus fare. Nothing - I wish I had stayed longer.
- Andrea (10/5): Exceptional hospitality, amazing food and beautiful spaces. - Everything about our stay was incredible. The staff were unbelievably kind and helpful, we felt so spoiled and looked after. The onsens at this place are the nicest ones in our whole trip and the room was beautiful, cozy and super clean. I wish we could have stayed longer 🧡 Nothing I could fault. It is a quiet area so perhaps keep that in mind if you prefer somewhere with a bit more activity.
- Nikita (9/5): Superb -
- Jen (10/5): Incredible - We had an incredible experience here. The owner is very friendly, polite and helpful. The food is amazing; my dietary needs were catered to perfectly (Vegetarian and allergic to rice). The rooms are comfortable and contain everything you need. The outside onsens are magical. It is a stunning area with lovely walks (we hiked YakeDake, went to Kamicochi and swam in the river down the road). Definitely stay here! N/A
- Olivier (10/5): After experiencing the inn and the meals, one does not want to leave! - Lovely place full of charms in a quiet place. Excellent kaiseiki dinner and breakfast. Indoor and outdoor onsen baths. Recommend to go by car as public transportation options are limited. Nothing
