Guest Reviews
- OneAdvisedTraveller (6/5): You get what you pay for… or not even - The good things: the place is fantastic, with a very nice view; the price is reasonable
The bad things: the road to get there is rough, you’ll better have a 4x4, we didn’t, but this was the dry season and that was still ok, in the wet season, it’s maybe another story. When we arrived, at 5pm, our room was not yet ready, and our host offered us a drink, as if it was a welcome drink, and so we have been surprised to find it on the final bill. Speaking of the bill, the exchange rate from CRC to USD was more than 10% above the official rate. Our room was nice (not the most comfortable beds however), but not so well maintained, a lot of stuff (handles, outlets and so on) was hanging on the wall (or not anymore) just by the last screw. The breakfast was disappointing, nearly no local fruits, and sometime, not even milk…
- G7103MDlenat (10/5): Home away from home / Fantastic stay in Samara - We very spontaneously decided to visit Samara and found this amazing place by accident. I contacted Laura the owner via WhatsApp and had a reply within minutes. She was very responsive, kind and very helpful. We confirmed our stay for two nights and arrived only a couple of hours later. We were greeted by a fabulous team, everyone was super kind and welcoming. Our room was already ready, even though there was not much time to prepare it. We had a bungalow with a balcony and sea view, it was simply stunning! We received great recommendations what to do in the area and the sunset tour we booked was great. In the evening, we relaxed at the bar, had some drinks and freshly made food from the own kitchen. In the morning, we also received a fresh breakfast with bread, jam, egg, bacon and a lot of fresh fruits. We had a fantastic stay and would absolutely recommend it.
- tamaravnet (10/5): Extremely beautiful and serene place - We stopped here on our way from San Jose to Arenal Springs area, for 1 night. This place is like paradise. It is beautiful, full of birds and nature, and cute jacuzzies and pools. It is on a hill so some climbing is required during your stay, but they have the La Pez waterfalls and a few sanctuaries for animals, which make this place very beautiful and special. Sitting on the balcony felt like sitting in a the middle of a rain forest. The bathtub was amazing, made from stone and full of vegetation. Highly recommended for a romantic stay, or for taking a break in your trip.
- UC2002 (10/5): Perfect vistas with wine, peace and love! - We enjoyed every minute of our stay with Laura and her beautiful team. Very thoughtful owners and great style. Especially kids friendly even in their great restaurant. Would come back anytime to this haven above the sea!
- Ethan (10/5): Absolutely stay here - This has to be the best view in Playa Carillo. Staff is super friendly and food is fantastic. Only a few minutes to one of the nicest beaches in Costa Rica. I recommend a 4x4 though to get there.
- Shaaruru (10/5): A little bubble of heacen - We were very lucky to get a breath of fresh air at Peace&Lodge for a couple of nights. Manager Laura wasn’t there but she provided personally all useful info ahead of arrival, and in her absence chef Max, Pepita and all the lovely morning ladies pampered us with great food, great service and heartfelt attention in every moment. Awesome views and best food in our 1st week in CR made it just perfect. Rooms and place are also super comfortable and tastefully set up.
Ah - almost forgot the most important final touch: adorable and friendly pet pig (and social media celeb) Brad Pigg, kitten Bruce, cat Bella and the 2 sweet doggies and 2 beautiful horses will make your heart melt and feel home in this beautiful place. Thanks and see you soon!
- Alexblue64 (4/5): Amazing view but the experience ends there. - Positive :
The view is outstanding and the hotel is situated in a very quiet area, far from Samara hippy agitation. Well situated next to the beaches of Samara.
Air conditioning and Wifi are working really well. The staff is super nice and helpful.
Little private terrasse are really pleasant.
Negative :
We stayed there for 3 nights and felt the experience very average :
-Beds are not comfy
-The bathroom has an opened wall to outdoor, so many (many) bugs & insects are coming in.
-No hot water and water flow in general very poor
-Food very average and expensive compare to the other places we visited during the trip
-Furnitures in general in the hotel are cheap/spoilt.
-Dogs poop in the garden & a domestic pig not really hygienic in the middle of the restaurant.
- F2700FJnataliar (10/5): Covid escape - Beautiful place, private, with an amazing view to the beach and sunset, the food is incredible, also the wifi signal is perfect everywhere. Rooms are cozy, beds are excellent for a good rest, the owner Laura (who speaks french, spanish and english) and the staff are also very kind, this hotel has a special pet who salutes every guest in the morning, his name is Brad Pig 🐽
- scapoccia (10/5): Steven C - My bride and I visited the hotel back in 2018. I have a thing about going to the same place 2x when there are so many places to go. Well things change as we met fiends there this week. Ms Laura was as gracious host as the last time.
We found out there are no 2xs, everything comes in threes.
Thank you for such a fantastic time Ms Laura.
SEE YOU AGAIN !!!
- Dwayne (10/5): Beautiful mountainside views of ocean - Great and unique place to stay. Fun environment and close enough to everything while not to close. Lauren (sp?) is a good owner and also added a new family member with a pot belly pig which my wife quickly fell in love with. Lauren tell Andre to be very proud of his country and people for being happy. They are not settling but happy. Happiness can define your life but life cannot define happiness. Costa Rica is a beautiful country with beautiful people. You also have a beautiful place.
- josh (10/5): love it - amazing place
- Kay (6/5): - The location is absolutely perfect... it’s close to the beach but far enough away on a cliff overlooking the ocean making it incredibly peaceful. The view is gorgeous and the overall vibe is romantic and healing. HOWEVER, if you are at all squeamish about bugs and/or reptiles this is not the place for you. The first night I had a frog jump out of the sink onto my face and a lizard climb in the shower as well as in the bedroom. We also had an intense infiltration of army ants in our room & on our patio. They were on our bed, the wall, the lamps and all over the floor. These guys bite and are not fun. Unfortunately the room isn’t sealed off from the outdoors, which is super nice in some ways, but I would recommend having netted beds so the animals (spiders, ants, etc) don’t have access to anyone sleeping in beds. The owner did help is with the ant situation although it didn’t completely remedy their presence. On one hand, you’re in Costa Rica so bugs come with the territory. On the other hand, the bugs seemed excessive in the rooms & there wasn’t any netting to shield ppl from the bugs. I wasn’t too bothered but my partner was incredibly uncomfortable. Just consider your comfort level when booking.
- Exploration317633 (10/5): Lunch with a view - Absolutely amazing! The most quaint, simple way to vacay. Lara the owner is french and has a gift of hospitality for sure. Her wuaint little bungalows with the sweetest breeze.
Kid friendly, delicious food and fabulous vino.
We’re coming back soon to stay 🏄🏼♀️🤬💕💖🥰#peaceandlovelodge#costarica
- stephenbJ7005LL (8/5): Tranquillity. - A beautiful spot on the hillside. Laura was the perfect host and the meals were excellent.
It's a little way out of Samara so if you want to visit the beach or check out other places then a car is a must.
the drive up and down there is an adventure.
- Mike (10/5): A Peaceful Stay! - It was fantastic! The space was beautiful and the owner was extremely hospitable. The property was a top of a hill with views that make you want to see every sunrise and sunset. The food was so good, we didn't want to leave the property.
- EnjoyingTheView14 (10/5): The name does it justice - Hotel Peace & Lodge is just that... Peaceful. Our Earth Bungalow provided the most beautiful sunrise and it was very comfortable. Definitely will need that 4 wheel drive and a good driver to get to that peace!
- 649jojo (10/5): great views, a lovely quiet place to chill out - Great choice of fresh food offered for breakfast and dinner. Lovely pool, accommodation and facilities. Laura was very helpful and welcoming. A little gem off the beaten track but close enough to sightsee local beaches and restaurants.
- ML (10/5): - Casitas was clean and a good size. Great views!! Would have enjoyed a small fridge to put water, beer and snacks.
Breakfast included was basic but good. Restaurant prices for dinner too expensive. But lots of options in area if you’re willing to make the drive up and down the hill.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Better than the pictures can depict! Peaceful and secluded with gorgeous views, and very clean rooms. About 2 miles of narrow (and a couple steep inclined) gravel roads to access. We managed in a FWD eco car but would have been very tricky if roads got wet!
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Simply unique and luxurious with wonderful food and hospitality
- annemaried27 (10/5): Paradise on the mountain - We really loved the three nights we spend at Peace&Lodge. Cedric was a terrific host and the food in their restaurant Coco Rico was awesome. We saw many wild animals on the mountain and our kids loved playing with the dogs and cat. We would highly recommand this little piece of paradise.
- LAWRENCE (10/5): Paradise - One of the most beautiful views in the world! Peaceful and eelaxing... we didn't want to leave! We will be back.
- JohnY699 (10/5): Intimate Fine Dining with the Best View - Hotel Peace & Lodge has extraordinary views, beautiful very private bungalows, and amazing fine dining. You turn up their road from Playa Carrillo (one of if not the most beautiful beaches in all of Costa Rica). The road is a little rugged, but this place is definitely worth a few bumps get there.
- garys66666 (10/5): Lovely place for lunch - Laura was a very gracious hostess. We, a party of eight, arrived for lunch without reservations, normally required for non-guests. Laura and her husband prepared a wonderful lunch for us and showed us a vacation cabin. Amazing place completely designed and built by them. Great place to hang out and enjoy the mountain and beach views.
- H8508TZjos (10/5): A true gem - This is one of the best vacation hotels I have stayed in worldwide, a true gem in Costa Rica. Spacious, comfortable, quiet, with stunning views, the perfect place to relax and replenish. Laura and Cédric are wonderfully welcoming and generous hosts, always there when you need something, look for local info or simply want to chat, yet discreet and unintrusive. Our family bungalow was roomy and super clean, the beds were comfortable and the balcony was the perfect reading spot for me. Both rooms had a/c but the ceiling fans were sufficient to cool them down comfortably at night. Our boys loved exploring the property and quickly became buddies with the friendly household dogs and cat and of course with Jamón the pet pig. Breakfast with generous plates of delicious fresh fruit starts your day off with a flavour and vitamine boost, and supper in the intimate Coco Rico restaurant overlooking the jungle concludes your day with the flavourful and inventive menu from Chef Adrien's cuisine - try the garlic mushrooms with pico de gallo starter and the flambeed watermelon dessert! Playa Carrillo just 5 minutes down the back country road (with the howler monkeys loudly commenting our drive-by) is a beautiful light coloured sand bay with waves just big enough for the kids to have fun in. Most of the times we had it virtually for ourselves, sharing only with a handful of locals and the beautiful red ara pair feeding on the beach almonds. We spent a wonderful vacation at the Peace & Lodge and can't wait to be back!
- Jian (10/5): - Difficult road up the mountain to the hotel. Only for the brave with 4 wheel drive. Worth the drive for view and peaceful atmosphere.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Great location, excellent staff and meals. Loved our stay
- Tony (10/5): We loved this place!!!! - Very peaceful place! The people who run it are friendly, and welcoming. The food is fantastic, it's like going out for a nice dinner, outdoors, in paradise. The rooms are clean and private, with an indoor/outdoor shower. The view from everywhere in the room is unbelievable, and can be seen from the porch, the bed, and even the shower. This place is a Five Star experience, and not your standard hotel. Do yourself a favor, and stay here! Don't be concerned about its location. it's easy to find, and the road isn't that bad. It is a little off the beaten path, but that's whats great about Costa Rica.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - So lovely. Our favourite accommodation in a three week visit. Spectacular scenery, stylish design, a really relaxed atmosphere and delightful owners who made us feel very welcome. It's a long, bumpy drive up, but so worth it. All the rooms have amazing views as does the restaurant/ bar. If you can tear yourself away, Carillo beach is stunning and Samara is fun. The wilder beaches to the south are within reach too.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - The views are truly spectacular and the elevation makes sleeping perfect without air conditioning. Waking up at sunrise to see the clouds below, yes below in the valley was special. The owners and staff are delightful and the food is gourmet.
- Terry (10/5): Awesome Views - We had an awesome time at the Peace & Lodge. This is a small property with 4 bungalows. It is very secluded and private. If you want to get away and enjoy spectacular views this is perfect. The property is about a 10 minute drive from Playa Carrillo up a mountain road. It had rained a lot but the road was good. They offer a small menu each day with daily specials. The owner was very accommodating to our requests for vegan options. We would definitely stay again.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Great stay. We feeled very welcomed by the owner and had a great time! I highly recommend.
- robertk496 (10/5): French Twist - Laura & Cedric the lovely French young couple have created a zen bohemian retreat in the hill above Samara. Drop dead views in an intimate setting. In addition to the guests it seems to have become the local hang out bar and restaurant for folks living in Boca del Toro & Las Ventanas - were we stayed with friends. Over a ten day period were were there at least five times for lunch and dinner or just to hang out- super relaxed
Part of the secret sauce are the friendly folks who visit and Clemence the Osteopath who works on appointments in a private room on the grounds
A great place to stay and enjoy the food and conversation!
- MATTHEW (10/5): Extraordinary Memories - Amazing in every way, hosts are the best, food is great, cabins were brand new, the pot belly pig, dogs, horses, billion $ view
- Katie (10/5): Most amazing hotel experience - This place is absolutely amazing! I wish I could have stayed weeks! The view is so spectacular. The owners and staff were so friendly and helpful. The food at the restaurant was great and also convenient since it is on site, poolside. The pool was beautiful and refreshing. During my sunset swim the fireflies came out and were flying right above the grass which added to the awesome ambiance. The room itself was super comfy, clean, and modern. It had a patio right out front which allowed me to sit out there and enjoy the view. They also have a spa that offers numerous services. I have never felt a more serene atmosphere at any other hotel more than I've felt here. The only drawback is the road getting up there. It seems typical for a Costa Rican road, but we aren't used to roads like that and we were glad we had a 4x4. Regardless, if you can make the trek up to this place, it is more than worth it!!
- Maria (10/5): - Wonderful stay; truly peaceful and beautiful views; very good quality restaurant; hosting couple is very nice and diligent, makes the stay pleasant and comfortable.
- Lynne E (10/5): Wonderful hotel and hosts! - Fantastic place. Cedric and Laura, the owners, are charming and extremely helpful. The setting, views, and food are beautiful and spectacular. I highly recommend this hotel and would gladly return again.
