Guest Reviews
- Nancy (9/5): - over the last50 years, every time we passed through your town over 50 times, we finally took time and spent the night and
walked around your beautiful town it truly is beautiful, we are thinking of visiting near to Christmas with snow on the
ground and at night with all the streetlights aglow, We believe it would make a beautiful Christmas card. thankyou
for your hospitality. Jacob and Nancy Hitz ????
- Yvonne (8/5): Fabulous hotel with friendly staff and good breakfast. Clean comfortable room. - Was like going back in time entering this hotel. Staff were friendly and helpful. Room was a good size and bed was comfortable. Good selection for breakfast and great to have china plates and cutlery and no plastic. Hotel has been maintained for its era so it is a little old and cranky. Town is lovely. Fridge in room but no tea/coffee facilities and a laundry room would've been nice. Were woken up by the town fire siren but not the hotels fault.
- Timothy (10/5): - Beautiful old hotel. Great old photographs and paintings in the dining room.
- Nicole (10/5): Best. Hotel. Ever. - Our room was an ACTUAL ROOM. Not a flimsy made-of-particle-board hotel room with a sliding bathroom door to save space. The carpeting and furniture were all very homey. It was the best night I've ever slept in a hotel because it was not a sterile, soulless, high efficiency cell like most places are. There are restaurants, coffee shops, outdoor outfitters, and bookstores in a very short walking distance. We love this place. We will be coming back. The hallway lighting is very dim. This feels par for the course for older hotels, but it's a little eerie (think The Shining) and it was scary for our toddler.
I thought it added to the experience but folks with poor vision in low light might not agree.
- jeffery (7/5): - Charming historic hotel in a great location.
- Stephen (9/5): - Dave was most helpful at check-in. Told us everything we needed to know and made great dinner recommendations. Love the character of the hotel and the town is truly amazing in rural upstate PA - a gem!! n/a
- Danielle (10/5): -
- Thomas (7/5): -
- David (8/5): Was OK - Breakfast along with room cost The long wait at dinner and got someone else's order.
- Harry (7/5): -
- LuAnne (10/5): Great - Great Small elevator
- Jacquelyn (10/5): It's a beautiful historic hotel. Very quaint. - Very good. Both hot and cold food. Nothing
- Charles (8/5): As expected. -
- Michelle (7/5): - Location was nice as we could walk outside hotel for shopping and food. Bathroom very small…needed to hold onto sink to use toilet but it’s an old hotel so I understand but that could be better. Breakfast had few options…esp since my daughter and I are gluten intolerant.
- Donald (8/5): with so many attractions and points of interest would always like to stay longer. - Breakfast was ok, location was excellent as always, been going there quite a long time now. The rooms facing main st. were little noisy but nothing terrible.
- Donald (5/5): - Needs updating Old and cold. Poor bathroom facilities
- Anindya (7/5): -
- Kevin (2/5): - The hotel Is old and worn out in need of serious upgrade and maintenance. The rooms were drafty and cold. The windows didn’t closed . The breakfast was substandard. Not worth the exorbitant cost.
- Steven (10/5): Was add - Breakfast was delicious and it was a nice location Next time getting a bigger bed

- Inspire07761933928 (6/5): 2025 New Year's Eve - Room 303 from 12/30 until 01/01/26. Loved the spacious layout. Sitting area was a plus! Enjoyed the lounge on 12/30, meeting some of the band members and sharing laughs. Breakfast was no better than that provided at a mediocre hotel. Starbucks coffee is overrated. We had some difficulty securing the table for dinner having been guaranteed a table close to the stage and being taken to one along the side wall. The hostess kindly changed our seats. The buffet dinner was mediocre with some entries cold and overcooked. Lastly. whenever we left a tip, we used our credit card. Upon reviewing our bill, we found a $30 charge for gratuities. Is this common practice? Finally, despite the negatives, we loved the ambiance of the hotel and will return again.

- ITA2934 (10/5): New Years Eve party - We went for a New Year’s Eve party. It was a package for the night. It was a wonderful time. Food was excellent, band was AWESOME! hotel is beautiful and well kept. It is old so don’t expect modern accommodations or technology however it is full of nostalgic pictures from the 1800 hundreds. Loved the razor slot in the bathroom!
- Christine (10/5): -
- ShinyRedHorse (4/5): Historic but sad and sorry - Shout out to Dave at the front desk...he was great! Unfortunately, nothing else was. Historic shouldn't mean neglected and dirty. Beds were clean but old. Bathrooms were just not clean. Stained sinks, toilets and tub. Floor was filthy. Baseboard everywhere hadn't been cleaned in a very long time. Peeling wallpaper and broken lampshades. Stained furniture. And don't expect the bathroom sink to have the faucets shown in the pictures - they are separate hot & cold, mismatched and hard to turn.
First morning there weren't enough people staying to serve breakfast, so we had to walk to the Lodge. Breakfast was standard fare. The next 2 mornings we ate in the dining room between 2 room dividers and blinds were drawn. It was dark and dreary. Breakfast was exactly the same all 3 days. On a positive note, the lounge is nice and we enjoyed hamburgers and drinks there.
We have stayed in historic hotels before and this was a disappointing stay for the almost $600.00 we paid.
The lodge is modern, but that is not the experience we wanted in historic Wellsboro.
- Cassie (6/5): -
- Norge (9/5): -
- Kathy (8/5): - Breakfast was good
- Sean (10/5): -
- Jeffrey (8/5): it was just OK. - food was fare, Location was great cost was a bit high
- Norma (8/5): -
- Jack (8/5): - LIKE GOING BACK IN TIME ROOM WAS REALLY SMALL
- tonymM79CM (10/5): A Must Place to Stay - This was our fifth time in Wellsboro and staying at the Penn Wells Hotel. We would not stay anywhere else. It seems like every time we are thinking of going somewhere else to eat dinner, the welcoming staff, the lounge atmosphere with local residents to talk to and the food keeps us in the lounge. We ate there all three nights of our visit. Thank you to all.
- Christine (7/5): -
- Fry (6/5): It was a nice stay, but we were ready to come home - Very good, would be nice to have something different each day but the eggs and sausage were delicious The bed was very uncomfortable,no exhaust fan in the bathroom and the lack of places to put personal items, especially in the bathroom but everything was clean
- Melinda (9/5): Would stay again! - Very cool historic place! Loved the town and great location!
- W5647RTjoec (6/5): Pros and Cons - Pros: Clean rooms, courteous staff, good breakfast with specially good coffee. CONS: wifi too slow in my room to be usefull, small room size, a bit pricey perhaps due to demand during Autumn season colors.
- R556ZTireneb (10/5): Clean and comfortable - So clean and comfortable. A step back in time with old photos and memorabilia and much of the original construction and decor.
- donhA1095BA (8/5): The guest is that it’s a wonderful little city town that city and anyone that would go there from almost anywhere would - The hotel is a 1939 hotel with all kinds of wonderful dramatic architecture from that age. The downstairs is hard to believe the rooms are OK. They need to work. The heating systems are often on not dirty. It is not dirty, but they need to upgrade the rooms in a sense of heating air conditioning And the windows.
The one thing I’ll comment as a very positive. The staff was fantastic from the maid all the way down. The music that was played was our error. I loved it. The breakfast were great, and the staff seemed to care about that hotel about as much as somebody who doesn’t own it can.
The staff member is treated us as more than guest and the fact that they wanted us to stay and always come back. You don’t get that in a lot of hotels believe me I stayed in hundreds of them in my career.
- Missgermany28 (6/5): Charming but extremely noisy - Beautiful old hotel. Building full of charm. Room was facing the Main Street and super noisy. Windows are really old with an old a/c unit. Felt like we were sleeping right in the busy street. Even ear plugs and tv could not block out the noise. No central heat. Old radiators. We ended up purchasing a small space heater.
- Lori (7/5): I am glad we came to Wellsboro and stayed at Penn West Hotel...just not sure we would stay again - The breakfast was okay. was hoping for something different and not eggs and sausage each day (especially as the sausages were cold even though they were in a chafing dish ?). Maybe they could have done potatoes and bacon on one of those days...mix it up a bit. Front desk staff and lounge staff were super friendly. The bathroom in our room was exceptionally small. I'm just glad that my husband and I are not larger than we are or we honestly would not have been able to use the commode... which ran constantly. The facility was aware of it and everyone was nice about it. More of a nuisance than anything. The second evening we were there our room had no heat. The facility was having boiler issues. "Dave" at the front desk was very helpful and even had someone come to our room to help fix the problem.
- Larry (10/5): We would recommend it to anyone. - It was a great experience…
- Tina (10/5): - The history and location Shower head needs replaced and more hooks for towels
- Jose (10/5): -
- Stephen (9/5): Wonderful -
- frankvecera (10/5): A great escape - As usual, the hotel is first class.
Everyone is extremely courteous and polite. Rooms are very well maintained and cleaned.
The included breakfast is very good and the restaurant serves excellent food.
Thanks to everyone for making our stay memorable.
- Debby (10/5): - Hotel is very quaint. Great fireplace in lobby, restaurant food was excellent. Special shout-out to Dave Cox at front desk. He is so friendly, helpful, busy and does it all!
- John (10/5): - This is a fantastic historical hotel. The charm of the old building, decor, and aesthetics was delightful. Everything was easy and there are some great staff members. Check in was AMAZING !!!!!! Dave was the nicest, professional, caring individual. It is rare to see genuine, natural, excellent customer service with an owners mindset.
- Rebecca (8/5): - Parking was easy here, no problem. The rooms were nice and clean, beds comfortable. Staff was helpful when we had questions. We like staying in old, historic hotels because they are so much more interesting than the cookie- cutter newer ones.
- Timothy (10/5): - Nice
- Rachel (10/5): - The desk clerk was amazing. The atmosphere was amazing.
- Hostovich (5/5): - Location Bathroom
Beds
- fiamma11 (8/5): Great Location - This is a charming historic hotel with a perfect location, central in downtown Wellsboro. The nice amenities and friendly service make this an enjoyable stay for everyone. Recommended.
- Jason (10/5): -
- Kenneth (5/5): - 3rd floor room was the loudest hotel room we ever had. Street cleans at 4am trash at 5am etc would not recommend 😑
- lizmG8430OK (6/5): Meh - The Hotel is old and falling apart, but it is a vibe. An old and nasty bathroom
Front desk:
Dave Cox at check-in (I think that was his name) was extremely professional and knowledgeable.
Tara at check out was the rudest person I have ever met in my life. She lacked knowledge, class, and kindness
Food and Bar:
I actually like the bar, but the bar staff was constantly confused, yet so nice. Jill made great drinks.
The morning free breakfast was fabulous, and the staff were courteous and helpful. It was very clean, and the breakfast items were refilled quickly. I wish the breakfast staff could run the entire place.
- Sampson (9/5): -
- William (7/5): Expected more - Location Small room, small bed, no room in bathroom
- ShebaM123 (10/5): WE LOVED IT! - This review is based on our experience staying at the Penn Wells Hotel. We had a very enjoyable stay in early October. Our goal was to see the PA Grand Canyon and visit the Leonard Harrison State Park. The hotel is centrally located in lovely Wellsboro, within walking distance of nice shops and not a long drive to the Grand Canyon tour and state park.
We were greeted by Dave at the desk and immediately loved the nostalgic landscape of the hotel. Historical photos and examples of long-gone industries were very interesting.
We stayed in Room 312. It had a small sitting area with a TV, a large bedroom area with a TV, and a bathroom. It wasn’t fancy but it was clean and comfortable.
We ate in the lounge every evening because the service and food were outstanding. Steaks, the Penn Wells salad with Grilled Chicken, Salmon with Beur Blanc Citrus sauce and the Pasta Pomodoro were all excellent! The dining room offered this same are but we elected to eat in the lounge.
Each morning hotel guests could partake of a nice “continental breakfast”, which is included with your stay. We were very impressed - scrambled eggs, sausage, home fries, cereals, yogurt, sweet muffins, bagels, juice, and coffee.
Overall, our experience in Wellsboro was enjoyable and memorable. A stay at the Penn Wells Hotel is highly recommended.
- Anthony (8/5): - Yes
- Rob (8/5): - The nostalgia of the place
- Damir (10/5): -
- Terry (8/5): - This is a beautiful old hotel. The location was just what we wanted with walking distance to the shops. The front desk staff were friendly and welcoming. The room was clean. Breakfast was adequate. Our room with a queen bed was very small. The radiator in the bathroom was on and it made the room uncomfortable. We had to turn the air conditioning on. We turned the heat off. The bed seemed uneven. The water in the shower was hot then cold and hard to regulate.
- doug (8/5): will return for sure. ! - cool place ! will return for sure. staff was awesome. food was delish. nothing
- Stephen B (9/5): - History, location and great breakfast
- Jennifer (10/5): - Amazing Historic Hotel!
- Angelina (10/5): -
- diego (10/5): - Perfect old hotel
- dcdavef (10/5): Right atmosphere and location in the middle of this nice town. - Great classic bar and dinner food. Location in the heart of Wellsboro with comfortable rooms and nice atmosphere. Nice town.
- Christy (8/5): It was nice, just some minor inconveniences - Loved the location, breakfast was ok, same thing everyday. Staff was very nice and accommodating. Need more shelf space in bathroom no where to put towels or lay glasses down because little shelf already filled with stuff, shower was just a trickle and temperature of shower hard to control. Said there was a pool, fitness and cafe. Cafe across street, pool and fitness down couple of blocks at the other lodge they own.
- Geri (6/5): - Excellent friendly service but the property is very old. While very charming and very authentic as keys are still used, it is very dated. I felt very safe but it also had that “ shining here’s Johnny” vibe. The bed in room 231 is very comfortable I was very pleased with my stay
- Lori (10/5): -
- Mary (10/5): - Very nice on beautiful Main Street!
- John (10/5): - If you don't like cookie cutter mega chain hotels, this is a beautiful place to stay. Comfortable room. Historical hotel in a great area. Real room keys. Not a magnetic card. Nice lounge. Good breakfast buffet. The worst thing I could say is there are some cracks in the bathroom tiles. Doesn't affect the overall feeling of the place. Adds character.
- Joseph (10/5): - Great place to stay!
- David (10/5): - In a beautiful town, and the building is historic and well kept. Very nice restaurant with indoor and outdoor dining.
My only complaint was that there was no closet or even a clothes hook in my room. I had to hang clothes on the doorknob.
The other thing, less of a concern, is the sink was an old-fashioned type with separate hot and cold faucets. Not that big a deal.
Oops, one other thing. Don't touch the steam radiator valves until they turn on the boiler. I opened mine before that, and it was way too much and overheated the room.
Staff was great. Very helpful person at the desk, who gave me a pitcher with water and ice and a glass when the vending machine upstairs was out. More than that, he was friendly and helpful throughout my visit, even recommending some good sites to see on a walk.
- Robert (10/5): - This was the Historic Penn-Wells hotel. It was like stepping beck in time. Dave, who was behind the counter when we arrived early evening, could not have been any nicer and accommodating. Very helpful in giving directions to the PA Grand Canyon. Their continental breakfast was very good, and lots of it. The theme in this hotel was based around its' history, and even the soft music that played while we were eating, was definitely from the early 1900's and carried on the theme. It was very enjoyable. I would recommend this experience to anyone.
- Mark (10/5): - I liked its history.
- Schrodel (8/5): Great location and chance to learn about the local area. - Historic hotel that was charming. A/C units were confusing to set.
- Jonathan (8/5): -
- Janice (10/5): - I enjoy history. Felt like we went back in time. In the Mary Wells dining room, the walls do talk. With 70 pictures of the past. Has a description of each. Great town!
- SanjeevS1 (7/5): -
- Lewis (10/5): - It was like stepping into the Wayback Machine and returning to the Gilded Age of the late 1800’s. The architectural features (hexagonal bathroom floor tiles, steam radiators, vaulted ceilings with crystal chandeliers, framed historical photographs of the area, etc etc). You get the idea. We could have spent an extra day just exploring the nooks and crannies of the building.
The breakfast buffet was filling and offered a variety of good food.
Good value for the money.
Wellsboro is a delightfully quaint small town. The buildings along Main Street and side streets are a photographer’s dream come true. Don’t miss the Tioga County Courthouse!
- Samantha (10/5): - Cool old hotel. Not the marriott, but quaint and charming. Very well preserved for a hotel over 100 years old
- Barbara (10/5): The town is beautiful, and I highly recommend the PennWells. - The hotel is old, but that is the charm and beauty. There isn't anything I don't like, I love this hotel!
- richardbI5225LF (10/5): Awesome place - Awesome old time classy hotel. Lobby, bar area beautiful. Wish I could have stayed many days just to hang out. Rooms are old, out-dated, clean, just the way I like it. Showers have a lot of pressure. The town of Wellsboro is beautiful, fun for a good evening walk, and even has a movie theater. If I landed there with no car, would not mind at all (I wonder if the train still goes thru, or if I could hire a horse at the livery stable? hmmm........)
- 498missyr (10/5): Wonderful! - My husband and I came to Wellsboro to celebrate our 33rd anniversary, and we had a wonderful time! We chose the Penn Wells Hotel because we love history, and we were not disappointed! The hotel has been beautifully restored and preserved! We loved the lobby and the kind desk workers. The breakfast area was lovely with the linen tablecloths and glassware! As we sat eating breakfast, I could just picture many years ago the women coming down in their beautiful dresses and hats and the men in their suits. We will definitely be back!
- Denise (8/5): Wellsboro and the surrounding areas are beautiful. We had such a fun time hinking, biking, and just wondering around the - The hotel is very charming because it is historic. The main lobby and downstairs dining room and bar are great. There is also a nice outdoor spot to enjoy dinner and drinks. The parking lot is easy to get to and spacious. The room was very quiet. The room was very small, which I guess should be expected because it is historic, but there was not a lot of room to put luggage, move or sit, other than the bed.
- Robert (8/5): - It's an older hotel, but it's still in reasonable shape
- john (7/5): -
- Terry (9/5): Very nice historical property. -
- sandyblank (6/5): Adequate but not much better. - This hotel is VERY old and dated. it was built in the late 1800s and it looked like it had never been updated. Our bed mattress was VERY soft. The bathroom was very old. It had window air conditioners that didn't work very well. Breakfast was included but it was minimal. They didn't even have napkins for a while, and ran out of coffee before getting our second cup. Eventually they made more, but they were clearly not prepared. It was fine, but no better than just fine. We likely would not return.
- Ami (10/5): Quaint - This historic hotel is charming in every way. The double beds are a little small as we know. Although the mattress was comfortable, it does tend to roll you to the middle. Pillows are comfortable. Everything is clean overall wonderful stay
- Michael (8/5): - Liked the history of the hotel and its location in Wellsboro. The lobby, dining room and lounge were well appointed and comfortable. Staff were pleasant and helpful.
Guest room was clean but very plain. Nothing on the walls, fire suppression piping all exposed below ceiling (distracting). Bathroom mirror way too low, had to stoop to see in mirror while shaving.
- Pessum123 (10/5): Classic Gem of Wellsboro - The Penn Wells Hotel is an absolute gem in the heart of Wellsboro, full of historic charm, comfortable rooms, and warm hospitality. From the moment we arrived, the staff made us feel welcome, but the highlight of our stay was the incredible bar staff. Even on a busy night, they were friendly, attentive, and made every drink perfectly while keeping the atmosphere lively and inviting. Their friendliness and kindness turned an already great trip into an unforgettable one. It was extremely touching how supportive they are of an event being put on in town - they really give the small-town community support vibes. We can’t wait to come back!
- BBQueen77 (10/5): One of a kind charming hotel - I love this hotel. It has a warm comfortable feel to it. Staff is great. Room was great. In this age of cookie cutter modern hotels, such a delight to stay in a family owned historic hotel with so much charm.
- teachna (10/5): Great Historic Hotel - My husband and I stayed two nights at the Penn Wells Hotel to bike the Pine Creek rail trail. It is an old historic hotel so be prepared for that. The dining room and dinner menu were very good. The bar is cozy and well stocked. The room we had was comfortable. Yes it looks old but it was very comfortable and that’s to be expected. It was clean with no smells. We enjoyed the historical pictures throughout the lobby and dining room. It is perfect location with excellent restaurants and shops right outside the door. The staff was extremely friendly. Highly recommend if you like old historic places.
- dianewH4963OY (4/5): Beautiful building, neglected rooms - Beautiful old building and great location, but the room was in terrible shape. Very loud window air conditioner, peeling paint, easy chair stuffing coming out, and no coffee pot. The common areas, dining room, and lounge were lovely, but the rooms are in sad shape
- Luther (7/5): - an old restored and updated hotel with a fantastic history, good service and great location room was very small
- Woods (4/5): - Convenient to where I was vacationing All of the rooms are extremely dated. Please invest some money into your property and redo the bathrooms. The sinks have separate faucets for hot and cold water.
