Guest Reviews
- Danielle (8/5): - The lobby was really cool, too bad it was shut down for the season would have liked to hang out there
- John (10/5): - Great independent, family owned lodge. Loved the main building decoration. Will definitely return.
- Malissa (10/5): - Wonderful stay! Extremely friendly! Perfect spot right near the boat ramp! Definitely will stay again!
- Doug (6/5): - Lady who checked us in was certainly not having a good day.
- John (6/5): - Hotel is a fun, historic property in need of a lot of maintenance. The rooms in the main building are not open, and the cabins are very basic, with window air conditioning units. The main building has scaffolding up on the sides for wood repair and painting, but no work was being done while we were there. Some of the property is closed off with orange tape, as the docks and an out building were damaged years ago and never repaired. The water to the hotel was shut off for 4 hours from 7:00 PM to 11:00 PM, with no compensation offered by the hotel. Bring cash, no credit cards accepted and no notice of that fact. It was a historic and vintage hotel many years ago, but is now very tired.
- Alan (6/5): - BEWARE this is cash only property. No credit cards. Its pay at property, but cash only. Not as advertized.
- randi (6/5): - Stayed 2 nights with our 2 dogs. Room was clean enough, beds were comfortable, however for the money paid there was zero amenities. For example, one bar of soap between the bathroom sink and shower. No coffee in the room or in the lobby. No Wi-Fi in the room. I also found it very unappealing how there were two signs at the lobby door saying that "management frowns on sightseers".
- Nancy (8/5): - Love this place, an outpost for sure.
- Ryan (2/5): - This place looks nothing like the pictures. The entire town has not recovered at all from the hurricane. Very sad to see. When we pulled in it was like a ghost town no one around at all I’m certain we were the only people there. We decided it looked unsafe to stay so we left
- Rena (10/5): Great bang for the buck - Very cool main lobby, lots of interesting details. Pet fee was reasonable and rooms were nice. Easy access to Everglades. Seemed like we were there out of season because a lot of businesses had closed up for summer but we had fun regardless.
Only hang up was cash only which they had included in their confirmation but I just totally forgot. We were able to go to the convenience store to get cash but there were fees so just come prepared.
- ronald (10/5): - Clean and neat. They need new nattrei
- Mike (6/5): - The AC needs to be upgraded. Hard to sleep due to the AC not cooling as it should
- Doug (4/5): - We were banned from the property! They only answer their phones sporadically. You may or may not have a reservation unless you talk to the front desk. Good luck. It is not staffed. The public bathroom in the lobby has cobwebs draped from the ceiling like it may bed Halloween. Our room was not made up. Dirty towels, beds unmade, wastebasket full, cigar butts in the ashtray. We attempted to find staff to make up our room, but at 8pm the entire place was locked up. No lights. No one there.
The food was excellent for our only meal there. Two fish dinners and 4 beers. Total bill $140.00 Yes, one hundred forty dollars. The single boat launch is okay, and you can tie up in front. Bring you own lines. There is a freshwater connection on the seawall.
The male manager called us because we returned to the place and got our room charge back due to the dirty room. $160 in cash. They take NO credit cards. Cash only. You cannot put a hold on a credit card payment. We were lucky that the very nice young lady at the desk gave us a refund. The owner/manager said to us, "Don't ever f------ come back here! We lost $150 on the room. You're f------banned for life! Oh well, we would not return to such poor service and high prices and incompetent management. And no credit cards? Only cash? Hmmmmm.
- Infoexpert (2/5): - They cancelled the booking before i got there
- Renae (8/5): - The emails sent to us after we made our reservation advertised lunch and dinner served. We arrived at 7:30 pm. What we didn't understand was that when dinner ended at 8pm, the hotel staff locked up the main lodge and went home. The internet is only available in the main lodge (not in the cottages) and our phones only had 1-2 bars. They told us when we checked in, that the lodge would not be open for lunch (despite our recent email). When it was time to check out at 11am, we were hoping to see the historic lodge (why we stayed there) as we didn't get to see it the night before and also wanted to see it in daylight - it was still all closed up so we didn't get to see the building or grounds. This was disappointing as we had chosen to stay here to see this historic sight.
With the upfront mention of our challenges and disappointments, the staff are friendly, the rooms are rustic with bare essentials covered, and what little we got to see of the lodge was beautiful.
I would recommend, when making your reservation to find out the lodge hours they are serving food and arrive early in those hours to soak in the history. And be aware, if you or your family needs internet access - it is limited.
- Daniel (8/5): - hope they survived Ian!
- Jeff (10/5): A step back in Old Florida History - We were excited to visit Everglades City and staying at the historic Rod and Gun Club was icing on the cake.
The hotel is rich with Old Florida history and is well maintained. Our room, while not in the main building, was clean and comfortable. The friendly staff treated us wonderfully!
We will be returning as soon as possible 😎
- Kelly (10/5): - Rustic quiet The shower didn’t have enough water pressure though
- Edward (10/5): - Very quaint setting, clean and quiet.
Couldn’t access wi-fi though
- katherine (10/5): - We're so glad we stayed here instead of getting discouraged by earlier reviews! We had a peaceful, fun time at Rod & Gun Club in the middle of July and we don't even fish. Josh at the front desk was helpful when we called ahead and then kind and accommodating when we arrived. The main structure/dining hall is very cool and our cabin was clean, air-conditioned when we arrived, comfy enough beds and views of the water. If you're looking for round-the-clock service from the staff, this is not the place for you. But if all you need is a quiet, air-conditioned views in an interesting setting (with the option to dine in a charming historic structure) then I think you'll have a great time! Dog friendly, low-key, cash only - we will be back on our next trip to the Everglades!
- Peter (8/5): - It was really great the main building was facinating, strait out of the 30,s. Only down side was no tea or coffee making facilitys in the room. Great location on the river.
- Elizabeth (10/5): - Great place to stay if you want someplace off the beaten path. Homey and charming, has a lovely pool and view of the canal, good food that feels authentic, not just standard hotel fare.
- Helen (4/5): - This property was a grand hotel and restaurant with old Florida charm. It is very sad to see it in such poor condition. No staff, worn out and old linens, over priced and now will receive poor ratings. They should just close and re-group like so many resorts have had to do since Covid. I hope someone steps up and restores this "piece of history".
- Sandra (4/5): - Legendary spot. But at first they said they had only one room when we had reserved two. When we were ready to leave they found another room.
- Judith (8/5): - No coffee in rooms. Unable to get ice after restaurant closed
- Michael (8/5): - The property was very unique because of the history of the buildings. The main building wasn't open long enough for us to wander around inside the main building - we would have liked time to do this.
- Robert (6/5): - Cash only operation. Restaurant staff unfriendly. Dilapidated building.
- Suzanne (4/5): - Property in need of serious upgrade.
- George (2/5): Tired Old Queen should be put out to pasture. - It used to be a fun place to stay, but no more. The help is bored and not putting forth much effort. My complaint that our room had not been cleaned was dismissed with hardly a whimper. I circled back to the desk and asked for my check back and left. Four hundred dollars they appeared to sorely need walked away with only a snarky comment from the clerk.
- Anne (4/5): - Arrived 6:15 — Nobody at front desk, given wrong key by guy in kitchen, quickly corrected, broken air conditioner (fixed) no Wi-Fi and when I called at ask at 8 pm no answer on phone. Two half used shampoos but no conditioner, scary shower with broken tiles. No desk or table. No door on closet and finally— mosquitos in my ears all night long. Really appalling experience for 200 bucks.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Cash only - Interesting; cash only business. Given a paper, hand written receipt. Went cottages & both were dirty. Luckily a housekeeper was on property & located 2 clean cottages. Cottages have a small fridge only. No microwave or hairdryer. Very clean.
- Verified traveler (4/5): - Cool spot but neglected & run down. There was no coffee maker in the unit & no coffee available on site. Had to drive across town to get a cup of coffee
- Thurman (4/5): - No coffee, no microwave, ac loud, electrical wiring strung out. Had to hunt up cash to pay for room. No hair dryer. Very old tv with poor sound. Will not be returning.
- stuart (10/5): - Made me want to but a boat and a fishing pole so that I could assume the lifestyle forever.
- Jenna (8/5): - Super unique stay. The lobby looks like it's out of a Disney ride. The history of the place and its quaintness were wonderful. We had a great dinner at the restaurant on site and enjoyed the big beautiful porch. Our room was simple and the views out the windows over the water were beautiful. I would stay here again.
- R dion (8/5): - Nice stay and comfortable room. Need coffee please since the restaurant is not open in the morning. Otherwise a very nice stay in a unique setting.
- Debbie (8/5): Sad but true - This historic property is under duress and will not likely survive for another few years.
- Amelia (10/5): Historical Lodge in the Everglades - So much history here! Rooms were very comfortable and clean. Dinner was outstanding! Highly recommend the blackened grouper (fish of the day special)
- Kathryn (8/5): - Beautiful location and historic setting. Comfortable cabins.
- Janet (10/5): - This was the first overnight stay. I have been at the Rod and Gun club for years for lunch with my parents. It was a thing that they liked to do. I was on a loop from Key West to the RV dealers in Fort Meyers and back to the Keys. It was very relaxed and pleasant. I was invited to sit with another couple since I was a single. We had a nice dinner and talk. You wouldn't get that in other places. The room was clean and appointed.
- Shawn (8/5): - Cute, great bar and lounge. Rooms are vintage and have all the pluses minuses that go with that.
- Kenneth L (6/5): - I like the rooms, the history and the location of the Rod & Gun Club enough that we have stayed there three times. However this will be the last time as nothing that you are told regarding services like dining can be believed. We were told the last two times that evening meals would be served each day and both visits the cooks left before dinner time leaving us on our own to find food. You have to hunt down someone to check or out of the place.
It is a beautiful place but we won't be back.
- Idy (2/5): - It was closed! Had to find another motel after having made a reservation at the Rod and Gun Club. We also got a text from them confirming the reservation. Lights out...nobody home.
- James (10/5): Birthday Getaway - Great experience! Owners recommend Speedy’s for our airboat tour and they were great! Hole In The Wall Pizza was delicious and in walking distance and the Everglades Museum, right across the street, was FREE and delivered a wealth of info on the area and the Rod & Gun Club. Another plus is they have a boat ramp that is easy access that we used to launch our kayak. Would definitely stay again!
- Page (8/5): - Love this place from old Florida. They kept the feel, but also feels updated too. My only complaint is my bed in #36 (I believe) made me roll to the middle. It was comfortable for 1 person, but 2 was a problem. However, there was also a twin bed, which I moved to and it was very comfortable.
- Verified traveler (6/5): Unique place but good for basic stays only - Made reservation through Hotels.com and they said they only took Visa and MasterCard. Once the reservation was made, I received an email that they only take Cash or Check. I was to make sure that I had Cash or a Checkbook to register.
The beds were comfortable and bedding was clean. Shower needs a good scrub. Mildew on grout and dirty tile floor.
Restaurant waitress was very pleasant but food was mediocre at best and, even though they said they “served alcohol”, they only had 3 types of beer, wine, and one glass of Jim Beam liquor. They don’t serve breakfast and didn’t even supply a coffee pot for the room.
Rod and Gun Club has a lot of history. Unique place. Hope Post-Covid that they can turn things around.
- Margot (6/5): - I was super excited to visit and stay at this historic property- however I didn't realize that it was their off season and everything shut down at 5pm. So no bar or restaurant service and all I wanted to do was sit at their swanky little bar with the taxidermy and hang out. That wasn't an option. When I went to see about breakfast the building was locked and no one was there so we went to another business for breakfast- went back to check out and the building was still closed and locked past 10am. It was so odd. Not the service I was anticipating. I would have loved to enjoy the "clubhouse" more. I didn't even get a photo! :(
- Kimberly (10/5): Enjoy Old Florida - Historic property in a beautiful Old Florida town. Relax on the veranda to watch pelicans dive and boats come in and out. A tranquil spot with friendly staff.
- Bill (2/5): - Has a wonderful history, but is falling apart. Needs to be renovated
- Frank (6/5): Interesting place - The place is interesting, historical you may say. The property has seen it's better days. The lobby is amazing with the wrap around porch to eat and drink. Didn't get a chance to eat there as they quit serving at 3:30pm. The bar was open until about 4:30. There wasn't any staff after that. The room in the villas was lacking maintenance. Wanted to sit on the porch but the holes in the screen wouldn't keep any bugs out, mind you we're in the everglades. The air conditioners were extremely noisy. Made for a very rough night of sleep. Went to check out at 8am and no one was around and no instructions on what to do. By the way if you go there they only accept cash for everything.
- Javier (10/5): - Room was clean very nice and cozy. Great place in Everglades City! Ate a restaurant was good friendly!
- Verified traveler (8/5): - It was a great place to stay for our stay at Everglade City. I wish there was a kitchenette available, so we could do some of our own cooking indoors. If you like fishing, it is right by the water. I would like to stay there in the future on any future trips to the Everglades.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Beautiful property where we could watch fish and dolphins jump in the canal as we ate our lunch and hung out by the beautiful pool. Food was good too! Amazingly historical step back to another time in the lobby. Staff was welcoming and friendly. The room was good, and tiled bathroom was nice. Access to coffee and ice 24/7 would have been better, but the gas station right down the street filled that gap. We loved it, and will make a beeline there next time we are in the region!
- Kim (6/5): Peaceful place - The hotel is right on the water and next to the boat ramp which is nice. The room was OK, but do not leave anything out because you will have fire ants and carpenter ants in the room.
- Verified traveler (4/5): - Old Florida in the heart of the Everglades on the river
- tara (10/5): Historic and laid back! Loved it! - We loved this place. They are still remodeling the mainbuilding upstairs from hurricance damage. So you stay in newly remodeled cabins which are very cute! Pillows were the good kind so super happy with that. This is a laid back place so the desk hours are wierd, but we brought out wine in after we got back from dinner and played pool till everyone went home. No coffee in the morning which was a bummer because the veradna would be a 10 in the morning! We also got to meet a ghost in the side bar, which we thought was very cool... sucker pushed a chair hard half across the room .. it was crazy ..... we are definately going back.
- Tanya (4/5): False advertising would not recommend - Got to the hotel and they sent us to a different hotel down the street. Owned by rod and gun but a different hotel all together. Rod and gun looked unique and was looking forward to staying there. Unfortunately, the other hotel was nothing special. Taylor, who works at the front desk of rod and gun, although very sweet, told us the pool along with all amenities at rod and gun were open 24 hours and we can use them all we wanted. That was not true since the whole hotel was closed when we returned in the evening and still closed at 10 am the next morning. The lady at the other hotel (captains table) did give us a bottle of wine to make it up to us, which was nice but still wasn’t right to send us to a hotel we didn’t book. Kinda seems like false advertising since they only show photos of rod and gun and you don’t actually get to stay there unless you’re docking a boat, which they never specified online. Would not recommend
- Verified traveler (6/5): - A nice room but don’t eat there. Caesar salad was Caesar in name only and a bottle of beer is $8.00. That seems a bit extreme!!
- Duncan Taylor (2/5): Are you kidding? - Cannot believe hotels.com lists this dump. Lodge was locked up...no meals...no pool...no service...guy met us in parking lot and asked for cash or personal check made out to cash...shady circumstances...I want my money back now...truck was up on blocks in what must have been reception/lobby entrance.
- Patrice (8/5): Old Time Florida Experience - What a fantastic place. Great old Florida vibe. My only issue was they seemed understaffed in the restaurant. The pool was nice ( could use a couple more lounge chairs). The staff was very friendly.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - I can honestly say I liked the place. The rooms were what I expected, the bathroom was nicer than I expected. The main area is nice and interesting. The things that bothered me were the bedding/sheets (thin comforters, tough sheets), no heat, no microwave, no coffee maker.
- Richard (2/5): - There are three different owner/managers with three different policies. For example, one manager will accept Venmo but another will only take cash; one manager will stay late and allow you to sit on the veranda and enjoy a drink and dessert, while the other will ask you to leave before you're finished with your food because he's "got stuff to do" - at 830 pm on a Saturday night. The wait staff couldn't be sweeter, but the unpredictable and unprofessional management is atrocious.
- Aimee (10/5): - Fun place to go fishing. You can keep your boat in the water. There is an onsite ramp, pool and restaurant.
- Richard (8/5): Loved it so much history - We loved the history of it and the old Florida feel it's not a fancy place but we're not fancy people we'll be back
- Vincent (10/5): - Great stay as always!
- Verified traveler (6/5): - Its a room. If you are there to fish and have either a guide picking you up at dock or putting your own boat in at ramp, it's worth staying. Otherwise there is not really any good reason to pick this place over any other. The room was comfortable for sleeping but it did not have a microwave or coffee maker which is a real bummer seeing as the whole town shuts down at sunset. You can't get anything after sunset. Make sure you load up on some munchies and sodas for the night. The Rod and Gun club does have some historical background but the current operators really do nothing to leverage that and the place is just barely kept up to an acceptable standard. It's cash only, no debit cards or credit cards at the RnG club, and there is only a couple atm's spread across town. Other places in town do take all forms of payment. I would stay again now that I am aware of the limitations of the property as I know how to prepare.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - Mixed review here. Gorgeous property. Very nice staff. Really nice pool. We ate at the restaurant twice and it was great both times. However, hours were weird. One day they closed at 3:00 pm and we didn't see anyone again until lunch the next day. The room could have used some rather common amenities - like a trash can and a coffee maker. Wifi available only in the main building and on its patio - not in the rooms.
- Larry (10/5): - Unfortunately the food was not what we would expect, but given the circumstances, it's understandable & not a problem . Otherwise we were thrilled and hope to be back many times.
- ANA (6/5): Needs to improve description & add ATM on site - The hotel building was interesting, the room and bathroom were clean, we had a refrigerator and TV in the room but it was kind of disappointing that instead of having two full size beds like the room description stated we found that we had a twin bed and a full size bed. Everything at that hotel is cash only but there is no ATM available on site even tho there are three other businesses that have ATM's on site. Registration/Check out building close until 8:30am Sunday morning when we were leaving so we had to leave the keys inside the locked room but I don't have any info stating if anyone worked there later that day. They should be more accurate on their description and add an on site ATM because once you leave to get money at an ATM somewhere else you mind as well go spend your money somewhere else that is more accomodating.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - The resort is beautiful
- Jay Scott (8/5): time for fun in the sun - it was a quiet area, with lots to see and do. The lounge has lots of history, and cool things on the walls.
the food was fantastic!
- Cathy (8/5): Wonderful historic gem - Everything was amazing EXCEPT the beds. Not having a king-sized bed for two adults made the night a v. uncomfortable one.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - We were met and registered quickly and efficiently. Our room was immaculate, but the TV did not work. Someone came to work on it, but was not able to fix it. My husband finally figured out that it was plugged in incorrectly and got it to work. The clubhouse was built in 1864 and is beautiful. I didn't score amenities well simply because there aren't any.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Our room and bathroom were VERY clean. The only thing lacking in the bathroom was a hair dryer, but we had brought one. The food in the restaurant there was delicious. Be prepared to pay cash for the hotel and the restaurant. They do not accept credit or debit cards.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Interesting place to stay when visiting the Everglades. Nothing fancy, but clean with basic necessities.
- wayne (10/5): - Great property!! Lots of great fun mounts and pictures. So much history to visit snd browse.
We loved it!!
- Verified traveler (8/5): - distinct feel of the history of the place was nice. the nearby water was great, room's porch was awesome.
Meal prices were high, cash basis was also inconvenient
- Verified traveler (6/5): - This hotel has charm and character, ideally situated in historic Everglades City, but strong lack of service (reception, payment options (only cash), no breakfast, no wifi in rooms, ...) for a quality-price ratio not really very good.
