Guest Reviews
- Kim (10/5): Very accommodating when asking to stay another night. - I like the location, the quietness and the easy checking in and out. Nothing, lived up to my expectations
- suzie (10/5): - The view is fantastic and such a peaceful place to stay. The room and property was spacious and clean. Only a short drive into town. Not really any staff around but that wasn't an issue.
- Jacqueline (6/5): Lovely place, clean and comfortable with great views. Just a bit strange ... - Lovely property and beautiful gardens with great views over the city. Nice and peaceful Very strange set up. No staff to welcome you upon arrival - just a key left on desk -and the place was spookily quiet which gave the place an air of the Shining! The kitchen was open to use but was an industrial / catering kitchen and breakfast was not an option - all very odd. Also - our room was large and comfortable however the door to the garden did not lock.
- Nikita (10/5): -
- Annette (10/5): Was an amazing place. Very special. The views and parking were excellent. - The Location was great for us as we had a 21st birthday party at Longhurst
drive. No Breakfast supplied and we didn't bring any but facilities where there for us to use A Nespresso machine would have been another nice touch.
- Indumathi (10/5): - This was our first pit stop in Christchurch for a night before we started our roadtrip towards Queenstown and it was such a good shout! The check in was seamless and the stay was very pleasant! The suite was refreshing with its beautiful conservatory area to take in the sunrise. A spacious delight with lovely grounds!
- Vashti (10/5): We felt at home with the breathtaking view, most comfortable bed. - The spaciousness, and the Victorian vibes.
Classy and clean Nothing
- Erin (10/5): -
- Cam (8/5): Nice tranquil location high above Christchurch with good views - Nice gardens and setting high up above Christchurch
- Rowena (8/5): We really enjoyed stay as a good base for exploring the Christchurch region. Thank you. - The views , the spaciousness, the peace and the breakfasts at the nearby cafe. More useful cutlery and plates in the room.

- koby (10/5): -
- Yunus (8/5): -
- Bo (10/5): - All Good
- Curtis (8/5): Ok but no 5* - Great location and parking Old furniture and reminding of a retirement home. Bathroom was not nice and carpet was old.
- josephine (10/5): - Beautiful property No microwave
- Anna (7/5): Enjoyed Rooms very much - shame about the breakfast and total absence of staff - Amazing house with a Beautiful Rooms and gardens. Also incredible views! Paid for Breakfast - instead of breakfast we got some random items of Food in the fridge. Really dissapointing. There was a bread but no butter or spread. Instead we had some pies, mixed nuts, snacks. Also just 2 coffee pods for two days for two people and only two bottles of water for two days. Not very luxurious.
- Donnelly (8/5): Great stay - The property was central to wat we wanted to do and very comfortable Need to put more utensils and plates
Need to replace downlights that we were not working
- Debra (10/5): Very relaxing way to wind down from work back home. - Did not have breakfast it was all great
- Geoff (10/5): - Up grade to the suite Not a thing
- Sylvia (7/5): Beautiful old world feel - Beautiful gardens
Wonderful views over city A little unusual set up , first room of suite looks like a boardroom table, no comfy lounge, an empty room, a sitting room with 1 chair,
- Milos (10/5): -
- Graeme (9/5): Very relaxing & would recommend staying @ Hackthorne Gardens - Mansion & view magnificent Requires own vehicle as out of city centre & lack of local supplies

- Cayla (9/5): - Great customer service and an incredible view!
- mark (7/5): -
- Suzanne (7/5): - Spectacular views. Glamorous room
- Geoffrey (8/5): Great rooms great views at a good price a bit out of town but worth it - Overall feel and views Bar closed
- Robert (8/5): Magnificent views - Beautiful views and super comfy bed.
The lady in reception was very friendly. It's minor but would've been nice to have some milk in fridge for coffee. As it happened we had some with us from previous stay.
- Tracey (7/5): -
- Ron (5/5): A room with a view in a historic mansion with potential - The view, large room with a large bathroom and a very large shower (but only one shower head). Only 11 rooms. Shower leaked under the door like crazy. Either no fan or couldn't get the fan to work. The grounds had potential, but needed some work with weeding and thinning, etc... The industrial kitchen was disorganized and just didn't look clean. The laundry room had 2 broken machines, and only one smaller/stacked washer and dryer that worked, and also didn't look very clean. Found one ant in the bathroom, a spider on the wall. The mini fridge was relatively noisy. No microwave in the room. Laundry appeared to be laid out to dry in a closed off room. Some mattresses were out on the patio appearing to be drying out for some reason.
- Tanya (10/5): Beautiful grand property which made me feel more than welcome. - I loved the serenity of it all being in a beautifully kept vintage building with impressive gardens . Nothing
- Belinda (10/5): -
- Connor (10/5): -
- Günter (10/5): Top - Tolle Lage und Ambiente
- Jade (10/5): - The house was gorgeous and well kept, beautiful gardens and plenty of spaces to park. Good facilities in the room.
- Pamela (10/5): - You will need a car to reach this hotel situated in the hills, but the room is well worth the drive!
- Knut (9/5): - No milk for tea
- John (8/5): dfistance out of town a fair way but ok, Had to find food elsewhere - No breakfast There was noone on site to assist when required. The place was great but was really only a bed for the night
- Le Ping (10/5): -
- Jeff (9/5): Beautiful views, Luxury, and comfort - The view from our room was fantastic. The hotel is high on a hill and has a great view of the town below. The rooms are large, luxurious, and comfortable. It was close to a bus stop that went straight downtown, which I appreciated so I didn’t need to drive on busy streets and worry about parking. The hotel is quite a way from anything, but there was one nice little restaurant called Arlo that had good food and was inexpensive. I would have gone here twice, but they were closed the second day. The only negative is that it is out of town, so you have to drive or take public transportation to do anything. However, the place is very nice and worth the effort.
- Tina (10/5): - Wow what an amazing property.
- Frans (8/5): Mooie locatie, prachtig uitzicht en veel ruimte. - Ruime kamer en faciliteiten, geweldig uitzicht. Niets.
- Liz (9/5): An escape back in time! - Beautiful property, like stepping back in time! Sitting in the lounge area felt so luxurious and was a great way to unwind at the end of the day. Our room was so spacious- wish we could have spent more time there. Very comfortable bed and lovely view from the bed over the glorious garden. The location was perfect for us as we had a car. Such a spectacular view over Christchurch, especially at night. It would have been good to have a door that locked properly, although at no point did we feel unsafe. Some more lighting over the kitchen area would be helpful, rather than just holes where the down lights were meant to be. Similarly, a few globes in the bathroom were blown, but that’s such an easy fix, and so minor compared to the overall comfort of the place!
- Birdsall (9/5): Beautiful - The hotel was beautiful, well maintained and a great place to stay, the gardens were very pretty we didnt see any staff whilst we were there
- Roger (10/5): - Lack of informative staff. Nobody to welcome you/check you in and explain the hotel setup. Breakfast in particular is down the road. People must remember it is all about customer service and do not rely on people to read any instructions.
- Susan C (5/5): As above - Onsite parking. The staff were helpful once engaged and offered complementary room cleaned once during our 6 day stay. Lack of facilities ie. No tea towel, no wine glasses, tv not working properly, although staff responded and resolved, you pay extra to get your room cleaned - which is something not experienced before.
- martin (8/5): -
- Adams (8/5): -
- Kristin (10/5): Good Value and Large Rooms - Location was great, except when kids were getting dropped off/picked up for school. Everything was very clean and everything we needed was provided. We had a great view of the city. Laundry facilities were great. Area not very walkable. Though the one restaurant in walking distance looked amazing, unfortunately it was all booked while we were there. One recommendation I would make to management is to put instructions on how to empty water from the dryer. It seemed like everyone was just making hot, wet clothes as the water tank was full.
- James and Gwen (8/5): - Elegant room spectacular views The receptionist was very unfriendly or shy..She did not smile or greet us warmly. She handed us a key and a piece of paper with details we have never seen such an unwelcome place ever .
When we asked if there was a park.nearby to go for a walk she said curtly.that she did not know of any.We asked her. If she could suggest some things to.see in.the area
She could not
We asked her to..suggest someplace to eat
She said she drove by one called Arlos but did not know much about it
Later we went driving around and found a park nearby and many restaurants.
We could not get the TV to work but we could not find her or anyone to help
The guest house was so gorgeous..we loved it...but it was so.unfriendly and so inwelcoming and so unhelpful.
So sad. They need a friendly helpful.warm welcoming staff.
- Kathy (10/5): - Stunning views.
- Gaz (10/5): - this property was exceptional in regards to location, price, 5 star. no milk in fridge, but we got our own.
- Sue (6/5): Great potential but a disappointing stay - The property is in a lovely location with a garden and views over the city. The bedroom was large and with a comfortable bed This is a property that has the potential to be truly special but it misses the Mark. We were told that we would be checking ourselves in by email which we didn’t have a problem with that when we arrived the building was shut as the staff had gone out with some other Guest. They returned soon after but only provided the key we were given no information about where we would find things so we had to walk around looking ourselves. It did not feel like a very welcoming place to stay. In fact after ordering a takeaway because there was no food available nearby at the time we arrived we were eating in the dining room and the staff came in to clear away rubbish from other guests from the table and then turned off the lights while we were sitting there eating! It just does not have the feel of a luxury hotel. There were a lot of cobwebs and dust the cleaning should have been better and the friendliness of the staff and communication needs to improve to market it as a five star destination. But it definitely has all the potential to be an outstanding place to stay
- Sheryl (9/5): Very pleasant. Would definitely recommend it. - Setting and standard equipment. The room was footless and bathroom sparkling. While it was very comfortable the bed was way too small for a couple. The tv was a joke, impossible navigate, there was no instructions and essentially nothing to watch in any of the minimum channels we could find
- Menzies (9/5): - A big room suite, view and location The bed was abit hard and the pillows
- Aya (8/5): Good place, need better cleaning - A spacious room, great view of the city, friendly staff, nice surroundings. Generally a very hood place. The shower had obviously not been cleaned at all as there were long hairs all over the shower floor. It’s a shame because otherwise we had enjoyed our one night stay.
- Leanne (9/5): Beautiful heritage style suite - We had an amazing suite. We opened the door expecting a studio unit but we were in for a surprise. It was huge! We even had our own library with a well thought out selection of books.
We had a sun room type area with window seats on 3 walls with magnificent views of the city.
The bathroom was lovely - very large with 2 shower heads and a separate bath.
We would definitely go back as it was a whole experience
- Robert (9/5): Hilltop and Garden View - Enjoyed being able to sit in a very comfortable living room and library with a beautiful view on the ground level. (Outside our room.)
- Anna (9/5): - Quiet and clean
- Anna (8/5): -
- Hannah (7/5): It was pleasant - It was in a beautiful location, with gorgeous gardens and the rooms were really quite large and clean. The floor in the bathroom was heated. The bathroom felt outdated. The toilet paper holder kept falling over.
The bed was quite soft and a little caved in in the middle
- Mike (8/5): Beautiful place to stay, stunning views and gardens - N/A NA
- Caroline (6/5): Normal - Interior The receptionist was rather cold.
The water temperature fluctuates during showers, and the flow is very weak.
- Beth (9/5): Highly recommend a stay here - Was a lovely stay - online it said there was a Bar...only disappointing 2 find it wasn't in operation. The house was faaaab, loved its charm. I generally like 2 report good things tho 4 a luxury paying accommodation, I expected a better quality of toilet paper and tissues I must say. Bed was so comfy !! I thought 2 say also 4 paying 4 luxury, that being greeted would have topped it off nicely, just the personal touch really would be nice :-)
- Felix (6/5): - Lage, Garten und Aussicht Staubig und Spinnenweben, Ameisen, Haus wirkte verlassen

- Rachael (7/5): - Location great, spectacular views. Lovely room and comfortable bed. Shower also nice. Would have been good to have instructions in room regarding use of TV etc as colleague took the only one copy of instructions for his room. Iron and Ironing board in room would have been convenient.
- Steve (10/5): -
- Robert (10/5): -
- Sarah (9/5): - Lovely inside and out, with a dining room where we enjoyed a takeaway meal, and a couple of lounge rooms to relax in, or on the chairs on the deck overlooking the wonderful view over Christchurch, lovely room - clean, very comfortable and beautifully furnished/decorated, very quiet room and hotel - we didn't see another person during our stay! So close to the Sign of the Takahe, where we enjoyed morning tea. Easy parking and self check-in/check/out. Would enjoy to stay again :)
- Tracey (10/5): - Such a beautiful place to stay. Has a lot of character. N/A
- Sze Ching Angel (9/5): Great - Room with spectacular views. Was not busy when we stayed. Place was well kept and had heating in bathroom floors. Very great stay. The Queen bed were two single beds pushed together. There is a small gap in between making it less comfortable.
- Garrie (8/5): - No staff were seen
- Mark (9/5): -
- Sita (10/5): -
- Mandi (10/5): - Beautiful room
