Guest Reviews
- Peter (7/5): Apart from the fire alarm and no room mirror, it was a pleasant stay. - Location is brilliant for walks on scenic routes. Breakfast was very nice with ample servings, as were the evening meals. Staff were very helpful and not overbearing. The room was clean and made up nearly every day. On arrival was told the mirror in room 1 was broken and was to be fitted by someone during my stay. That did'nt happen so had to buy mirror from chemist for shaving. The fire alarm went off one day at 6.30am and rushed downstairs to be told it was a false alarm, but there was no resident manifest check on names or procedures to gather in the car park. Bit of a relaxed attitude when there could have been a real fire !
- James (10/5): Great food, quick stay! - Great food -
- Roger (8/5): - Location,, staff and food was great Bathroom small
- lines (8/5): -
- Andrew (8/5): A friendly and welcoming place - Very friendly and well located Bed rather on the small side
- Holmes (7/5): Attractive old pub with atmospheric accommodation - The location and character of the Inn were excellent.
The room provided was comfortable and a good size.
Staff were friendly and helpful. The food and drinks provided were of good quality. No breakfast was available before 8.30
The flat rate charge for breakfast made some lighter options an expensive choice. Perhaps a continental breakfast could be included in the room rate with something like a £10 surcharge being asked for full cooked breakfasts or equivalent.
The staff at breakfast seemed quite inexperienced and struggled to ensure such basics as cold milk were kept topped up without guests requesting assistance.
- Madison (10/5): - Wonderful service from very lovely people. They helped fix my room after it was incorrectly booked and were so friendly about. Also the BEST kitchen ever. I wasn't expecting to eat the most delicious vegan pizza of my life!! Highly recommend.
- Steven (8/5): Two night stay, really enjoyable, pleasant staff and good location for walking - Very friendly staff, good location, good quality breakfast and restaurant menu Limited parking

- Craig (10/5): Great place to stay in Hawkshead. We will return and Would 100% recommend. - It ticks all the right boxes, location, parking, Great friendly customer service, comfy clean rooms offering good selection of drinks & food for both breakfast & lunch/evening meals. Don’t enter the car park round the back of the property, through the tunnel passageway. Instead drive through the no entry at side of the property for parking. I scratched my car attempting to access (my fault) but the no entry should be the other way round.
- Tracy (3/5): Terrible room nice breakfast lovely village - Lovely village, decent breakfast Dirty small attic room, needed a really good clean, dirty tea tray, 3 coat hangers so didn’t unpack our cases, bathroom dirty and very bad musty smell, mould on shower door glass, dirt and stains on headboard overall very poor and overpriced
- Geoff (8/5): - Really handy for the village
- Louisa (8/5): -
- Ian (9/5): - Good food, comfortable bed Nothing
- Dennis (5/5): -
- JOANNE (8/5): - Food & staff were exceptional Recommendation only, 2nd coffee machine would help breakfast run smoother
- Ashleigh (8/5): Cheap and cheerful. Fine for a night. - Brilliant price and location. The room felt a little grubby and the shower was boiling hot and couldn’t be turned down.
- Davis (6/5): -
- Philippa (8/5): Very good place to stay - Location within Hawkeshead, very clean bedroom & bathroom
Staff very friendly I didn’t appreciate it was the locals pub so slightly intimidating when I arrived but it was bank holiday weekend so it was always going to be busier.

- Catherine (8/5): Thoroughly enjoyed our one night dinner B&B stay - Good atmosphere.
Lovely staff
Attractive pub No storage in room. Lights sll connected so reading lights wouldn’t work independently (room5)
Don’t like dogs in restaurants. Should be restricted to bar area.
- Drozd (10/5): -
- Ton20 (10/5): - Great pub. The staff were really friendly and we had a good laugh with them. We had a few games of pool and darts and they had a few local beers on tap.
We were up and out early so didn't have a breakfast.
Overall couldn't fault anything. Had a lovely stay here, plenty of parking, great location. n/a
- Frances (5/5): Staff excellent, food delicious. Bedroom & corridor etc needs some TLC - The staff very friendly & helpful. Food was lovely Rooms dark & very tired. They were clean
Corridors awful
- nichola (8/5): Lovely family friendly pub and hotel, a little staff training needed though - Location and friendly staff.. although staff on arrival didn’t give us the correct information regarding breakfast times and how to exit the building during closing hours.. these are things we had to find out ourselves or by asking another staff member. Staff were lovely but not singing from the same song sheet at times - one example is one lady who was giving out lunchtime specials board in the evening which caused a few issues at the time, just little things like this make a difference to wanting a peaceful stress free weekend away
Other than these couple of issues;
The hotel and pub is lovely, as are the staff ! Confusion with what we were being told by different members of staff
- Francois (8/5): -
- andrew (10/5): -
- Robert (10/5): Hotel, staff, and food top notch. Will come again. - Excellent, staff friendly, helpful and professional. Helped with our enquiries about parking. Food brilliant. Would come again Very minor issue. Unfortunate unable to use pool table Saturday morning as a patron when pub was shut, and noone was about. Was advised large group coming, suspect that this was in readiness for home international rugby being shown on tv.

- Leeann (9/5): - Perfect location, lovely food
- John (9/5): Fantastic friendly staff in a stunning location. - Quiet, comfortable and availability of food. Suffered slightly due to the age of the building. Found myself stooping to move around. However that was the character of the building and was not an issue.
- Stephen (3/5): - Location in vlliage, and food was beautiful The bedroom and corridor was on a serious slope, very expensive for what you get
- Clapton (7/5): - Nice warm, clean cosy room. Flat beer, no food available at 750pm
- Karen (8/5): - Food was very good, staff were friendly and welcoming, room was clean and comfortable bed Only downside lack of car parking space but luckily we eventually managed a spot outside hotel.
- Tomas (8/5): Happy that visited Hawkhead and stayed in old tavern Red Lion. - Beautiful village. Well kept , tidy , clean. Supper location. Toiletries in room, good shower, very clean. Comfortable bed. No wardrobe or rack in the room , no hangers, just a few hooks . Not much space in double room, sink separate from toilet at other room conner. One side table with tea kettle ,cups coffees and tea bags. Your belongings can be put on window sill. Space is only for one travel bag. You can stay here not longer than one night .Other twin room was much bigger.

- Heather (9/5): - We loved the wholesome, welcoming vibe. The staff were lovely & friendly. The food delicious and our room was cosy and comfortable. There was nothing we didn't like.
2 points to note though, the car park only hosts 7 cars, so we had to park in the main village car park which was £9 for 24 hours.
The Red Lion is dog friendly in all areas

The room was clean and tidy, basic but we were out a lot so comfy bed, bathroom and kettle was all we really needed. Everything is on the doorstep anyway. Loved the pub is old and has lots of character. Parking outside. Will definitely stay here again.
- Eddie (8/5): Tradition and welcoming - Never stayed in Hawkshead before so it was a first but loved the quaint streets, the bus was every hour really good you could head towards Coniston and as far as Windermere and Keswick, we opted for 6 mile hike to Ambleside it was lovely. There are a number of hotels and eateries in and around Hawkshead lovely choice our hotel was 15th Century building loved that fact and the thought of all the history and indeed the stories that were held within those walls. We were greeted by Fergus and V as we booked in late it was v busy in the barthey told us how to get in our rooms and we were lucky enough to find a car parking space in one of the six atbl the hotel. The main car park was 5 minutes walk from our location. Unfortunately we had a problem with our heating and reported it however generally it was quite warm in the hotel, we were only staying for 2 nights but nobody attended to look at it. We also reported a leaking shower as we left I'm sure they would sort it in due course.
- Claire (10/5): - great atmosphere, lovely staff great location. nothing
- Louisa (10/5): We love it every time we stay here. - Everything ! Nothing, everything was great.
- stephen (7/5): Autumn escape - Friendly staff and service. Good breakfast. Great location Extremely small rooms. Unlevel floors.
- Steven (7/5): We like it here it's our 3rd stay and will be back hopefully a larger room - Location and very nice friendly staff
Lovely food Very small room
- Chris (7/5): Ok but not great for walkers if you want an early start - The staff were all very nice, friendly and helpful. There were not much in the way of healthy options for breakfast, but the bigger issue was it was only served between 08.30 and 09.15
That is the latest start to breakfast I have encountered anywhere in the world. We wanted to get off walking early but it wasn’t really an option.
I also needed to do some work and there was no desk or table to sit at.
- kieron (8/5): -

- Lee (10/5): a wonderful hidden gem! - extremely pleasant very warm ambiance to the bar/eating area. staff were exceptionally friendly and attentive with a very cheerful demeanour!
the standard of food was so good I was genuinely surprised by the high standards of the cuisine. had a fantastic menu which was excellently executed!! car park a squeeze but to be expected in a village designed long before cars!
- Kelly (9/5): -
- Stephen (9/5): - Great service and lovely food, would recommendnand stay again
- Andrew (9/5): Yearly reunion. We will be back. - Great location. Recently been redecorated and now managed by a great team. Great food and reasonably priced. Not much
- Mary (10/5): Great stay and fab food - Great room snd amazing breakfast Nothing
- Carly (1/5): Would never go back! - The location was okay I suppose, as long as you had a car. Although you’ll probably have to pay to park it in the village centre car park as there are only 4-5 spaces on the side of the hotel and they’re not reserved for guests. Where to begin. Dirty, broken, awful. I’ve used booking.com for the past 8 years and never had an issue until now. The room had dirty socks behind the curtain when we arrived. We had dirty sheets on the bed that weren’t changed at any point on our stay. The floor was filthy, not hoovered at all and very unclean. A cotton bud was on the floor for 3 days when we got there. Dirty towels one night too so we had to share towels as there was no one there. Despite saying 24/7 security there was no one there over night. The sockets power went out in room 8 one evening and we informed the manager who apologised but said that he couldn’t get a sparky out. He sent a waiter to go and get an extension lead from his garage that turned up an hour later after being sent to the wrong room. Weren’t offered any compensation for this or a free breakfast or a drink or even to charge our phones behind the bar. Rooms were “serviced” daily. Not cleaned. Broken toilet seat, black mould in the shower and a leaky toilet. Vile. Would’ve spoken to a manager about this but the only time we ever saw them was when the power went out. The rooms are dusty and not cleaned, “serviced” as they say. We stayed 6 nights and honestly I would not recommend at all. We also had the pleasure of someone trying to get into our room one night with a key and the lock turned, luckily my partner noticed and got out of bed and put the lock on! Nice and safe, just what you like. Awful. The worst place I have ever stayed at. Complained to booking.com as well and the hotel said that it had been “serviced” and that they offered us an extension lead and no unathorised access was made to the room. It’s the first time I have ever complained since using booking.com since 2017 and very disappointed. I would say pay extra and definitely stay somewhere else. And if you are silly enough to stay here, book the breakfast beforehand or else it’s £15 per person per day.
