Guest Reviews
- Joe (10/5): - It was fantastic
- Regina (10/5): Thoroughly enjoyed our stay! - There are few options for lodging in Davis, WV. Last year, while traveling through the area, I snubbed The Alpine Lodge because it looked (and is) old. I chose Bright Morning Inn instead and endured two days/nights with no hot water and a very uncomfortable bed.
Although The Alpine Lodge is old, the rooms are clean and warm, the beds are comfortable, the on-site restaurant serves great home-cooked style food, and the area is quiet and safe.
- Gloria (4/5): - The whole place needs renovation. In my room the shower leaked, there was water on the floor of the bathroom, toilet did not flush well, the carpet felt damp, no microwave. After 2 nights I asked for a different room. Second room had no coffee or microwave.
- Heidi (6/5): - There was no no staff. At check-in there was a list posted with your names and door codes, checkout had an envelope with a receipt. The bed sheets had brown stains down the side that did not look like rusty water stains. There was no coffeepot in the room, though the gas station down the road had excellent coffee! Nothing would play on the TV, and the AC unit was filthy
- Roger (6/5): - I was doing a trade show at Canaan Valley resort and only needed 2 nights. 3 night minimum. They listed 2 alternative properties. I have stayed at the resort, and thought their suggestion would be ok. It was an outdated unkept property that needs work. No way to secure one of the windows (front of room on hallway). Bed that was like sleeping in a bouncy room. Has not been updated in at least 20 years. It was nothing like description. Restaurant was not open entire time was there.
- Matthew (6/5): - No one in office even though it was only 3PM and posted hours are 8-4. Key was put in box with full name and room number on it. Would recommend if office is not open to just put first initial and last name on envelope for security.
- Daniel (2/5): Turned into a dump! - Room needed major update and repair. Refrigerator leaked and never got cold. Shower was either hot or cold…nothing in between. Huge stain on chair. Springs could be felt in the mattress. Huge hole in the bathroom screen. Was definitely much better when I stayed 2 years ago! Won’t be returning again!
- Carolyn (4/5): Only choice I had - Photos and site information outdated. Very neglected hotel with lots of damage in parking lot, exterior, and hallways; exterior doors rickety. Office not well marked, I couldn't find it at first; and when I did, it was closed. So hours do not match advertising, ditto for restaurant. They did leave my key and room number in mailbox; as convenient as it was, it was not secure. Being on the town's major road, that was worrisome. HOWEVER the room was on the second floor, the door locked securely, and the room seemed clean, bed comfortable, clear instructions on using the old AC and water system. TV did not work well; kept changing channels in the middle of searching etc. Middle of night vibrations in the room, perhaps from others using their AC? No way to safely allow in natural light; the only window opened to the hallway ... This is one of 3 motels/hotels in Davis; the other two were full so I made do for one night. Late the second day, I got a room at my preferred location. Too late to get a refund for that second night from Alpine, but they refunded the third night. Although they charge too much money for the condition of the place, I hope they use the $ to get an office sign, update their web presence, and start some repairs.
- Michael (10/5): - Property was.ok. Not great. Carpet was not clean.
- Kimberly (6/5): - This hotel is old and outdated. So I guess for it's age, it wasn't terrible. But it was not the nicest of places to stay. The room was as clean as it could be. For just an overnight stay if you're passing through or there to visit Black Water Falls State Park, it will do.
- Verified traveler (4/5): Not comfortable - We tried to make it work but it was dirty, run down and not comfortable.
- Mark (4/5): - Cigarette burn marks on furniture. Window was broken and would not shut all the way. No hot water. Bedding was clean.
- Verified traveler (8/5): A good place to rest after skiing all day. - Basic lodging but clean with great hot water!
- Catherine (6/5): - Motel is convenient to outdoor excursions and restaurants. Needs serious remodel. Ice on inside of frozen windows. Felt like a deer camp with old furniture. A comfortable bed would have been nice.
- Johanna (8/5): Basic no frills motel, in a great location - Spent 2 nights - the room was clean, the heat worked well, the shower was hot with good water pressure but it drained very slow so you were standing in water up to your ankles by the end of the shower. It is not a fancy place, but staff were pleasant and it had everything we needed while in the area to enjoy our favorite band that was playing at the Purple Fiddle in the neighboring town of Thomas. We had breakfast Sunday morning at the Sawmill restaurant. Our waitress was lovely and friendly and the food was piping hot, quite good and reasonably priced.
- Verified traveler (4/5): Picture different than reality - Bed mattress and box spring old, hard and needs to be replaced. Bathroom window dirty, broken and doesn't provide privacy. House across street can see in. Shower door needs replacing. Hallways and hallway carpet dingy. Doors showing their age . Only thing going for it is it's close to blackwater falls. Otherwise find a nicer, less rundown place to stay
- Donald (4/5): - The Sawmill Restaurant looked like it has been closed for some time. Photos of it should be removed from the website.
The room was clean, but shabby. A 1960’s style room with pealing wall paper, cracked walls. The mattress had a plastid covering. Under the sheets.
- Krista (2/5): Horrible. Just don't go - Firstly, there were few outside lights and none above our door causing me to trip and fall
Our room hadn't been cleaned well at all. The last person's soap was in the shower. Floors had crumbs all over. Wall outlets didn't work. The smell of musty mildew slapped you in the face when you opened the door.
Mostly and worst was the mattress. It had absolutely no support under it and pretty much did a V in the middle. We might have gotten 2 hours of sleep.
If there were any other hotels near, we would have left
It's also only attended during business hours, so there is no one there to even change your room after hours
The front desk keeper was extremely kind and didn't charge us when I told her all of this, but I would have much rather had a decent bed and gladly paid the bill. She also didn't seem surprised though.
I'm not super picky and I don't need perfection, but I would like a comfortable bed and not to walk on someone else's leftover dinner crumbs
- Jun (8/5): - Safe, clean and easy parking
- samantha (10/5): - I liked that it was quiet , friendly people , the room was in great condition , the hot water was excellent , the atmosphere was great! The office lady was nice. Check in was great and check out was the same! My husband and I have no complaints.
- Deb Ed (4/5): - Very worn room and facility. Bathroom had clear glass window that was easily seen through by neighboring house.
Staff not unfriendly, but not really friendly either.
- Joseph (10/5): Perfect for Blackwater Falls - It was a clean nice spot that worked perfectly for me and my two friends on our trip to see Blackwater Falls.
- Verified traveler (6/5): Great location but pretty average room - Great location but the room was musty and smelly. Bed was horrible, shower was great!
Other than that it had all the basic stuff a hotel room has including a small refrigerator and coffee maker.
Had to stay two nights as they don’t offer rooms for one night and all other accommodations in the area were booked.
Sawmill Restaurant was closed all the while we were there so can’t say how it is.
- Anna (4/5): - The accommodations were clean but totally wore out. The bed was old, hard, and pillows uncomfortable. The sights were amazing. The restaurant pretty good.
- Brenda (6/5): Needs updated - Very outdated. Outside covered hallway to upper level very uneven and dangerous. Cobwebs in windows to parking lot. Very thin walls and could hear conversations in the next room. However the location was next to park entrance.
- Bruce (10/5): - Didn't care for the stairs.neefs better a/c units
- Rebecca (8/5): - The first time we went to see if we could check in early the girl working the front was not very friendly. The office was not the cleanest either.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Good spot to walk thru the town - Easy place to stop to see the area, super close to the main street. Only there for a night on our way out further into WV. Easy to find, easy to check in and out.
- Larry (8/5): - Good place to stay
- Nadia (4/5): Location only reason to stay here - Only positives were: location, three queen beds in the room (not needing two rooms for my group), and clean sheets and towels. Bedcovers and mattresses not so much. Couldn’t sit on the chairs bc of stained upholstery.
Coffee maker “upon request” was all booked up, so ended up having to go to Keurig machine in another part of building. No water source for it though; had to ask three different people for water. Shared microwave in laundry room was burnt and disgusting! Looked like never cleaned. Shower flooring was awful! And shower head won’t stop dripping all night.
So glad was only for two nights! And so not worth $160 a night!
- Shelby (8/5): - Overall, we had a great stay and will probably be returning. It was a little dated, but for the time of year and price I really don’t mind that. The WiFi worked, the water pressure was great, and the bed was comfortable. The only issue is that I wish they had some form of all hours or nighttime staff.
- Michael (6/5): - Check in was very simple and friendly as well as check out. The rooms were not what you would expect. For example, we had four lamps and only two of them worked, the bathroom window could be opened from the outside and it was not frosted so if anyone could see in. The shower doors were a task in themselves to make work. Water pressure was great. The linens were clean the bed was comfortable and the area was quiet
- Carrie (2/5): - I really wish I had spend the extra $120 and stayed at the Lodge in the state park. This place has got to be the worst I have ever stayed in. Mold on the bathroom ceiling and it reeks of smoke. Everything is sticky and has a layer on it.
- Dennis (6/5): - very outdated the room had a very musty smell. needs updated and totally remodeled, especially for the price.
- Misty (6/5): - In desperate need of updates to property and rooms. Staff and cleaning people were super friendly. We stayed on first floor so you could hear people above at times but we were only in the room to sleep. Wall ac unit kept place nice and cool-which was nice. The shower head was a bit different—more like a mist than a spray.
- Shenandoah (2/5): - I love Davis but this motel was so disappointing. The moment I walked into the room after checking in there was an unbearable smell (like musty cat urine). I turned on the AC and left for the afternoon exploring the area, hoping that the air circulation would help the smell. Nope.
Returned back around 7:30 and the smell was just as bad. I went into the bathroom and opened the window, which did not have the option to lock from the inside so I felt increasingly unsafe. The sink had a horrible smell after running the water and the toilet did not refill after flushing. The bed seemed clean enough but the room overall made me feel so uncomfortable because of the smell and the window that wouldn't lock that I ended up leaving and not staying there. Because the office was closed by the time I left I did not speak to anyone. Live and learn, but I do not recommend this motel.
- Ronald (6/5): - This place is okay for the area
- Lonnie (4/5): - The shower curtain had mold on it, bathroom sink didn’t have a stopper, bedspread was dirty, stained. Our room was on the backside of motel and all other guests after us had rooms on the front side of motel, what’s up with that? $94 for a $45 motel room. My first and last stay here.
- Doug (2/5): - It qas so outdated that it should have outside toilet
- John (4/5): - The lodge is dated. For a major tourist location, this was not what I was expected. I only saw an employee the last 30 min of our stay. As for the room, again, it was dated. The bed was loud and not comfortable at all. The bathroom was in major need of attention. Attached is the toilet, which was needing to have the lid lifted and manually altering the plunger to get the toilet to begin to fill. When I first entered the room, I did smell chemicals from being cleaned. It smelled like a changing room at a pool. There were hairs and colored fuzzies (lint balls) under the blankets. I would not stay at this room again. Just a little extra money and we could have stayed at the nice lodge where we ate dinner and breakfast everyday.
- Paula (4/5): - Not so clean. Not so friendly Hester off at 40 deg overnight. COLD all night. Unkempt
- Amber (8/5): - Room was clean for what you pay for pillows where very thin and flat mattress wasn’t in the best shape but it was ok for the price
- Karen (2/5): Worst experience ever - I guess the first bad thing about our experience was the finding a letter attached to the back of our receipt about a power outage that was scheduled 8-4 the next day. There would be no housekeeping or anyone in the office. They didn't even mention it when we chcked in. The room was disgusting, the carpet was soiled, we had one washcloth for both of us. The TV was stuck on comedy central and the air conditioner blew directly towards our heads. The mattress was stained and hard. The room was disgusting. Enclosed our pictures if you think I'm exaggerating .
- Guadalupe (10/5): - all very clean
- Svetlana (6/5): I will not stay there again - It is a very cheap place. I think the room was very much overpriced. Bad smell, mattresses are too soft. You just deep down when you sit or lay down - not comfortable. Rusty toilet, no shower head in the shower, bottom of the shower looks dirty, maybe just too old. The restaurant at hotel is bad - we were waiting 1.5 hour for pancakes to "arrive" to the table. They are not tasty.
- Elizabeth (2/5): - This is a hotel where construction workers life. I figured it would be a fine because it’s in a quaint town but unfortunately it was not. It is extremely dates, the walls were filthy, the whole place smelled, there was no way to actually keep the light out, the bathroom window was proven and would. It lock. I was extremely disappointed with this hotel, so much so I left in the middle of the night and came home because of the light and noise.
- Denise (2/5): - Room was terrible! So outdated! Beds terrible. Debated on sleeping under bedspread.
- Larry (8/5): - It was okay for an old property it was not well cleaned and smelled like cigarette smoke everywhere. The employees were friendly enough and the restaurant was great. Definitely overpriced for the condition of the property.
- Jennifer (10/5): Weekend Getaway - Though some may find it outdated it's very clean inside and out, very well heated, mini fridge worked great, you have cable and Wi Fi. The lodge is centrally located between Blackwater Falls and Canaan Valley as well as they have the best food in town on site at the Saw Mill. They have the most amazing homemade bread and biscuits we had to get some to take home with us. It was great for a weekend get away and not expensive, don't let the older look of the building fool you it's a nice, clean and friendly place to stay.
- Michael (2/5): Disgusting - We decided we couldnt stay here after seeing the room... the good thing.. they refunded us our entire charge. This place could be decent, great location, but aside from being sooo outdated which we could live with... the internet doesnt work and the cleanliness made our skin crawl... the toenail clippings all over the floor around the bed... used food containers wedged between the bed and nightstand... huge stains on the chairs, floor, boxsprings and mattress... and when we checked for bedbugs... the mattress had a ton of what looked like dead bedbugs in all the pleats. They may or maynot have bedbugs but they did for sure at some point and it wasnt cleaned up properly. This place could be good with some vision and effort but it should be called the last resort. And honestly we were going to sleep in the car before here. We luckily found a B&B that was awesome and only a few bucks more.. LRC B&B
- John (8/5): Great value, 10 minutes from Timberline Mountain - The one lamp was not working, but was repaired in a timely manner. Rooms were nicer than the exterior appearance would lead you to expect.
- Ashley (6/5): - We won’t be staying here again. We were booked for two nights but left after the first night. One of the bed frames was broken, the bathtub drained VERY slowly, so I ended up showering in like 8 inches of water, the room was run down and very dirty (especially under the bed), and we found what appeared to be bedbug excrement on the mattress cover. After sleeping horribly and feeling super heeby-jeeby, we decided to cut out losses and drive home. I informed the front desk manager that we were checking out early and she didn’t seem like she cared at all about our reasons why. I found a report online from this past year that said bedbugs had been found on the property, in the exact same room we were staying in!! Definitely won’t be staying here again!
- Joe (4/5): Pass - Very run down and dated. Wouldn’t stay here again
- Cheryl (8/5): - Pretty area. Restaurant wasn’t open. Hard to regulate the heat in the rooms.
- Yaraslau (4/5): - Very thin walls and the room layout is such that whenever someone passes in the hallway next to your room it’s as if they are passing through your room, including when you are trying to sleep.
- Mark (8/5): - It is what it is. Cheap place to stay in a tourist town.
Totally acceptable, ur just sleeping there, it not the attraction.
Friendly people, bed to sleep on in.
Enjoy
- Amy (8/5): - The location was very convenient. My room was clean and I was provided with necessary toiletries. I appreciate having a little fridge too. I with the restaurant has been open, it would’ve been nice for breakfast. I would definitely stay again.
- Sandi (8/5): - The motel is a bit dated, but IT IS CLEAN, the beds are decent, the staff is wonderful and friendly, and the Sawmill Restaurant has some of the best non-pretentious old fashioned country cooking you will ever eat. Almost EVERYTHING they serve is home made from scratch. EVEN THEIR BREAD !!!
- Verified traveler (2/5): the worst hotel on earth - Receptionist is very very terrible, hostile to me. She treated me like a beggar. Never and never come back.
- GrannyDavis (8/5): - Very friendly staff and a very good food. the cost was good and was close to our hunt . I would stay again if in the area.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - The stay was nice but loud somewhat instrument noises keeping us up from 6am-8am .
- TomB (6/5): - Convenience is about all you can say for this motel, as it's literally across the street from the park's entrance. Other than that, it's an old, run down motel with a decent restaurant. The type of motel you'd expect in a small, rural town. Obviously, with the pandemic, everywhere is hurting. But the parking lot looks like it's needed resurfacing for at least 5 years, the mattresses and pillows could have been replaced 8 years ago, and the whole motel could use some serious remodeling. A 20" TV attached to the wall, really? If you're looking for something nicer with decent amenities, either get a room at the Blackwater Lodge, if you can get one, or stay about 30 miles away in Elkins.
- Erin (8/5): - This town is an amazing place for fall hiking... Our hotel was fine for c what we needed it for.. bed and hot shower .. it's out dated but clean and staff is very nice
- Sandra (4/5): Time Warp - I'm not too picky about my hotel rooms, but this place was last renovated when the baby boomers were in diapers. Even the plumbing fixtures were ancient. A millennial would have to google how to turn on the shower. There was limescale buildup on the sink faucets and mildew on the shower curtain. No maid service. We came back to full trash cans and no fresh towels. Will definitely not be returning.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - This hotel was close to town, all the restaurants, and Blackwater Falls. It was very clean. Staff was very nice. For the price I was expecting the worst, but it was better than I expected and served the purpose of our one night stay.
- Verified traveler (6/5): Zero frills! - Its a low end old hotel that has had updates in room that make it clean and thats about it. There are zero frills. The staff was polite & helpful. The area is run down in general, but close to those mountain views. We stayed because we wanted to be able to walk from restaurant/bars wothout driving. Served the purpose although Covid had most places closed.
- Patti (8/5): Alpine Lodge stay - The room we stayed in was very dated but was very clean and comfortable. It was all we needed to stay the night after visiting Blackwater Falls State Park and then moving on to Seneca Rocks. The staff was very friendly.
- Heather (8/5): - This hotel is not a 5 star but we have stayed here many times. It's clean but very dated. There is lots of hot water and great water pressure. Breakfast at the Sawmill Restaurant is great as well.
- Jim (2/5): Last resort - Great area, but the hotel was run down. The room was hot, the tiny window unit air conditioner froze up. There was a party in the parking lot. The TV was tiny. The bed was very uncomfortable. The hallway reeked of cigarette smoke. The best thing I can say was that most people's tattoos were spelled correctly.
- Charlene (8/5): - We got what we expected for the price. We needed pet-friendly accommodations. The property is older but I was pleasantly surprised that there was no musty smell. The room was very clean and comfortable, including the bed and bedding. The restaurant on-site was also very good.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - The room was clean. The food at the Sawmill restaurant is superb.
- Michaelalley (6/5): - It was very outdated and not the most clean facility i have visited. Wouldnt recommend and wouldn't stay there again
- Verified traveler (8/5): - This suited our needs appropriately. The room was very, very clean. Probably one of the cleanest rooms I've stayed in recently. I was disappointed that there was no coffee pot in the room however, make a quick trip downstairs to the restaurant and they'll give you free coffee (I had my own travel mug). The shower was awful, scalding hot with no temperature control. The bed was most uncomfortable, very bouncy and taco-ed in the middle. Overall, it was fine because cleanliness is my top priority.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - It is a clean place to stay. Basic rooms, affordable, and close to Thomas
- Olga (4/5): Worst hotel experience in my 71 years 0 stars - The bed was horrible. Obviously way beyond it's life cycle.
Very deep sway back. From both sides impossible to avoid rolling to the middle. Was on second floor with no notice, and one of us had extreme difficulty going up stairs. No elevator available. Office closed at nine with no service after. Very bad experience!!!!!
- Verified traveler (8/5): - For an older lodge, it was clean with a firm bed, new carpet in the room and the Sawmill Restaurant had really tasty breakfast. We would stay again at the Alpine Lodge!
- Verified traveler (8/5): - everyone did their best to make it a pleasant stay
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Bathrooms need update and mattress update. Room was a little small. Entrance to room not clean.Restaurant was nice and friendly, good meals.
- Bruce (6/5): Old Fashion Motel - Our room was clean and the bed was okay. The hallways desperately need updated. The Sawmill Restaurant was a great place for breakfast.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - In need of updates, but clean and sufficient. Except the bed... it was very uncomfortable!
- Verified traveler (6/5): - Price and location to Blackwater & Canaan Valley was good. WiFi was almost nonexistent. Older facility, but if you’re there to see the sights and and don’t expect amenities, it’s an ok motel to spend a night or two.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Rustic - TV set didn’t work , front office women very helpful but man she sent up to help us acted as if he was inconvenienced..otherwise fine...restaurant very homey
- shirley (8/5): - Even though it was nonsmoking room, it smelled like something smoked in there.
- Owens (8/5): - The Sawmill Restaurant was excellent. Food and service was tops in our books.
- David (8/5): - The hotel was close to everything we wanted to see. The restaurant had good food and the staff we're all very friendly.
- Kathleen (8/5): - Cute little place and the desk person was SO friendly and helpful.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Close to everything within walking distance of shops, bars and restaurants
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Sawmill restaurant was excellent. Home cooked food. Fresh made bread
- Linda (10/5): - Close to everything that was possible to do.great place and I will be there next year!!
- Verified traveler (6/5): - The employees were nice and the lodge was clean. However the room had a musty smell. The bed sagged in the middle and was very uncomfortable.
- John (4/5): Low class motel. - We had to wait until 3:00 to get into our room. We were told to call back in an hour at 1. We called, and they had no answer if we could get in. Very frustrating when u need a place to rest after all day of traveling. The bed was HORRIBLE, The worst We ever slept on. The tv was so small, our eyes were hurting from straining to see. My husband only wears glasses for reading, but had to put them on to watch it. Won't ever stay there again.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - needs a little up grading and repairing some things like faults, blankets and bed covers. some outside repairs on the building also
- Verified traveler (8/5): - It was what I expected. It was clean and in a good location. The restaurant connected was awesome. The mattresses are not good. But its an older hotel. Did not sleep well due to the bed. If your not sensitive to what your sleeping on it's a great deal.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - It was a little outdated but clean and the staff were friendly and helpful. Overall not a bad experience.
- Paul (6/5): - The food was delicious. Conveniently located. Loved the area
- Maria (10/5): Cute, Comfortable, and Super Clean - The Alpine Lodge was ADORABLE and super, super clean. While definitely old-fashioned, my friend and I found it a cute and comfortable place to stay during our hiking trip. Also fun that it is within a few paces of good food and drinks at the 912 Brew Pub. Would definitely stay here again to check out more places in town.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - Cold rainy weekend ask for another blanket. Denied.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - On-site restaurant (The Sawmill}, rustic and quaint, with delicious food and great service, was a big plus. Lodge facilities/decor was clean and maintained, but needing serious up-dating. Amenities (wifi, television, etc) were adequate. Lady at desk had a bit of an attitude. Maybe she had a bad day.
- Diana (6/5): - Water to hot no cold water bed was not good tv was the smallest I every watched ☹️
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Room was very clean..very affordable and the staff was very friendly..Restuarant had reall good food definitely will stay again..
