Guest Reviews
- Y4907SClynned (2/5): House of Edward, Closed - This hotel declared bankruptcy in January, and not knowing this, made reservations for May, 2025. When we arrrived in Ghent in May, we were told the hotel was closed by the government due to the bankruptcy. They charged us for the night of May 21, 2025, the previous day and since we had just arrived, had no idea they were closed. No way to contact Heirloom Hotels as they no longer are in business. Please do not book through Heirloom Hotels.
- Michael (8/5): - Everything was good. Shower pressure and temperature were great. Spacious room with large double bed.
- York (8/5): York - Great location. Virtue service but they forget to send us the door code. Wait for 30 minute outside before we receive the access code
- peter (6/5): - Great studio loft in convenient location. Nearby parking stations made ut easy.
Room on 3rd floor needed 48 stairs, last set very narrow, so not convenient if heavy luggage. Main letdown was lack of detail to servicing. Only one coffee mug, no coffee, one glass and only one fork. When texted agent, they were quick to rectify.
- Man Kit Ken (6/5): - I lived in room 11 and there are reception and the confirmation email had never been received. Had to wait 10 minutes to reach the staff. The hot water is not stable and comes and go. Should view the comment first obviously the water is system always have a problem. The hygiene is average. But the price is really attractive compared with other.
- Paul (6/5): Location good, communication not so. - The apartment was clean and in a good location in the centre of Ghent. We used Park and ride to get to the centre which only took 25 minutes on the tram T2.
Communication from the start was poor. I asked questions about parking, no answer, i asked about check in, no answer. I managed to contact them on WhatsApp and on the day of check in I received a code. Which worked for the front door but not our room.
Fortunately the cleaner let us in and eventually we received the right code from the owner.
In future I would recommend the owner to improve early communication with guests.
We weren’t the only ones this occurred with……
- Ola (6/5): OK accommodation - Bad start due to lack of communication from the owners, they did not respond to texts or phone until several attempts. Did not get information about room or code for opening the doors. But once we got that by third phonecall, we were pleasantly surprised - the studio was large and comfortable, and fashionably cool. Bed was OK. Very good aircondition is a huge plus. Also, it's very central. The kitchen lacks kitchen towel and bread knife. Stay out of the laundry basement, it's full of garbage.
All in all, good value and we would consider staying there again.
- Mary (8/5): - Had a good stay for four nights, but it is more of an Airbnb than a hotel. I would not prefer their reception-less method if traveling alone.
Rooms are spacious and quiet, but a little dingy/dusty. Showers would not stay warm for long in the evenings but mornings were fine.
We had to contact owners for more towels and toilet paper but they arrived very quickly and seemed happy to check in with us.
Extremely walk able area for beautiful Ghent, but getting to and from the train station required taxis. Public transportation was tricky in the area.
- Anthony (10/5): - Good place close to everything. Missing some basic needs like paper towels but overall met expectations.
- Robin (6/5): - Parking was not easily found
Laundry access was dangerous
Meat (old stink) left in our fridge
The room was very comfortable
- Mario (6/5): - My code to get into my room didn’t work.
- Cindy (4/5): - No reception to ask questions or get directions or map, no hand towels, no utensils, way overpriced, no elevator, 3rd floor room for people in their 70s!
- Conrad (6/5): Good basic place to visit Ghent from - Room location and price was good. Bed was comfortable and pillows were nice. Basic provisions were okay. I could give this an 8 if the shower hot water was better. It stayed hot for a minute or less before turning cold. A little more provisions it small kitchenette would be nice - I was slicing onions with a table knife.
- Lara (4/5): - Our shower was unclean and moldy. There were cobwebs. The walls were dirty and stained. The in-room coffee maker didn’t work and only decaf coffee was provided. No onsite staff to answer questions, address complaints or provide support
- Paula (4/5): - Laundry service is a creepy and narrow staircase into a basement that reeks of garbage. Reception was quick to answer any questions over WhatsApp but it was suggested that I just leave my card info in a draw downstairs at checkout to pay and found that the draws are filled with random stuff including room keys. Seems unsafe if everyone that’s staying has access. Not very quiet and not well cleaned. Won’t be staying again.
- Jon (10/5): - Lovely old building. Yes, stairs are original and steep but not a problem.
Front view is of square used for parking - shame but didnt spend time looking out of the window.
Great place to stay
- Dennis (2/5): - I did what they asked to check in. The QR code did not work. The contact number did not answer. Took my money no stay.
- Cori (6/5): - This place is much better suited for a couple wanting a minimalist room, but not well-suited for a solo traveler. A little unsettling both from the area and the lack of other staff/service onsite
- Janet (4/5): Disappointing - The location is great, but the room was disappointing. With no on site management. We had to ask for coffee and hand soap after we checked in. The advertised laundry room was full of garbage and had mouse droppings on the stairs down. They cleaned it up after we mentioned it but the room still smelled of trash.
- Graham (8/5): Great location. Get the keyless code - This apartment is in a superb location to explore the beautiful city of Ghent. The bed is very large, there’s a small courtyard, and a good shower. It would benefit from more attention to details - the tv isn’t tuned, there were no tea towels, soap dispensers were empty and coffee pods were already used. It could do with a little bit of an upgrade in the bathroom. All that said, it’s still a very nice place to stay. There was a problem receiving the keyless code to get in - be warned: check you have them well before arriving, and do tell Hotels customer care to send the email in their system. I hadn’t received the hotel provider’s email, but the Hotels system had it. All’s well that ends well, and I would highly recommend this place.
- Lynn (2/5): - Our stay was not very good at the House of Edward. First, we received no codes to enter the property, and had to call 3 times to get through to someone. Once we finally reached a real person, they did send us the codes, but it took well over an hour to sort it out. The room had some nice features -- including a nice outdoor terrace, and a large comfortable bed, but it was not that clean. And, the kitchen lacked basic items such as dish towels, paper towels and a sponge. And, the shampoo dispenser in the shower was completely gone, and the conditioner dispenser was empty and didn't work anyway! We could hear people going up and down the stairs until at least 4am. And, there was a mouse that scampered across the floor when I turned on the light.
Also, on Expedia, it states there is "parking available." What that translates into is a parking lot in front of the hotel that requires you pay every 5 hours outside the hours of 11pm and 9am. We were about 30 minutes late when we went to dinner, and ended up with a 40E ticket! And, if you have one of the upper floors, make sure you know there is no lift/elevator -- and the stairs are quite steep and narrow. I'd never stay here again -- I'd opt to book the Ghent River Hotel, right across the square.
- Nancy (6/5): - Narrow, steep, winding staircase - very difficult to lug suitcases up to the room (we are over 75 years old!) top floor hand railing a bit loose which added to the risk. I dropped something under the bed and in retrieving it, found that the floor under the bed had not been swept (or maybe never was).
- jessica (8/5): - The location was great and the beds absolutely amazing! For that we would definitely stay again.
The studio was light and spacious, could do with a more thorough clean (behind the tv!) and the kitchen amenities could be improved (we had 2 bowls, no plates, no kettle, no bin)
Overall a good place and will be back. Thanks.
- Jason (4/5): - Was not ready at check in time, still cleaning. Had to wait over 30 minutes after check in time to get in the room. Room did not stock any toilet paper.
- william (6/5): Poor service - Your company did not communicate effectively with the hotel & we did not receive our secure registration.we spent a lot of time before we got in Not happy with your service
- Janine (6/5): - Liked the ground floor room and bed was comfortable. But needs some attention. Could have had a second mug in the room. Coffee machine leaks. Table needs to be replaced and outside area could use a good power wash and new chairs. Appreciated the laundry facilities however if the garbage was removed more often there would be less mice. A very scary basement!
- Genevieve (10/5): - We booked a studio room and were pleasantly surprised to find we had been given the room on the top floor which was like a loft apartment, with a sofa and hi-table with bar stools. The bed was comfy and the kitchenette had a good amount of kit. Great location and I liked not having to worry about keys. We would recommend
- Nayara (10/5): Clean and comfortable stay - Very clean and comfortable room with a nice private terrace. Ideal locations minutes from Gravensteen and many sights/attractions in Gent. Would recommend!
- Jonathan (10/5): - Liked the room, the hands off check in check out, nice location for visiting Ghent. Steep stairs and railing needs some work.
- Steve (10/5): Would stay again - Clean, well-appointed, good facilities.
Good location.
- Jacqueline (10/5): - What a wonderful little hotel! It is very close walking distance (2 minutes) to the old city center, with lots of wonderful restaurants, and an easy 5-minute walk to the tram that takes you to the train station for easy traveling around.
The room itself is beautiful, and the bed is very very comfortable - especially the amazing feather pillows!! Perfect after a long day of walking!
The owners were very responsive and made the self check-in and -out very convenient. We will definitely stay here again next time we’re back!
- RICARDO (10/5): - The best thing about the House of Edward was its location. Step away from the entrance are you are right in the center of Ghent's most beautiful sights.
- Davesarahinmacc (6/5): Nice room but noisy - A tale of good and awful! The room itself is a good size, clean & comfortable. Check-in simple also.
BUT!!! A few meters away from the building is a nightclub that is open until 6am every Friday & Saturday night. On top of hearing people coming and going you can literally feel the base coming through your pillow as you lie in bed!
The sound insulation between rooms is also non-existent and you can hear every step from your neighbours!
- Jackie (8/5): - Great place and very accommodating and responsive/helpful staff.
Older building that does have charm.
- Tiffini (10/5): - The design of the studio made efficient use of the space. The finishes were excellent. The bed was very comfortable. My unit had a terrace which doubled the space of the unit. I will definitely stay at The House of Edward again. The nearby dining and shopping options are superb! There are many worthwhile attraction in Ghent and Brugge is a short train ride away. Excellent overall.
- Peter (8/5): - Simple check in, modern style, apple TV. Parking is 100yds away in an underground car park and is not cheap.
- James (8/5): - Value place to stay in Ghent. Nice location. Two flights of stairs to the top rooms. Entirely automated so you never see the hosts. But the access is quite easy as they send adequate instructions. As I remember it, the free version of the internet was just a tad slow even for doing basic tasks. Over all, would be pleased to stay there again if I ever get back to Ghent.
- Erica Bryn (10/5): Impeccably clean great hotel - Wonderful hotel and really great service. impeccably clean with very cool modern fixtures. Staff is very nice and very helpful. We needed to keep our luggage at the hotel after check out time and they were very accommodating. I can’t say enough positive things about House of Edward. Highly recommended.
- Gelderlander (6/5): great in atmosphere but thin in high level comfort - This hotel is centrally located and conveniently accessible by foot and public transportation. A car park is available on the adjacent square . This is an over hundreds of years old house, but neatly renovated. No Reception to help you out but emailed instructions were clear and correct. The room is small but well organized with closed-in shower (empty shampoo bottle …) and restroom. Great large and soft towels! It is not soundproof, we had guests who enjoyed the wee hours of the morning on the enclosed terrace on the ground floor and the conversation just amplified up to the 2nd floor. The amenities are basic (hairdryer present, but broken )You’ll lack a luggage locker so think ahead. So great in atmosphere but thin in high level comfort
- Savvytraveller2619 (10/5): Wonderful!! - From the moment I spoke to Caroline on the phone from the U.K, I knew Id3made the right choice! Very easy reservation and she wss very helpful.
We were even happier when we arrived to find a super boutique-style hitel, good Covid measures, clear instructions for checking in and a fab location close to Ghent centre and to the hospital we intended to visit.
Super airy and clean rooms, very relaxing, cosy but minimalist! Fridge and coffee/tea machine, warm and fab shower. Our own code to get in and grwat interior design in the lounge etc
Maria welcomed us and answered our questions, later sending us WhatsApp details of recommended restaurants, which we tried. This was just the right place for us at a difficult time.
Would recommend The House of Edward to holidaymakers, business people and anyone who wants a lovely hotel in Ghent and goid value too.
Dankje wel, Maria abe we will return when we are needed at tge hospital again!

- Athos (8/5): - Good experience
- FREDERICK (8/5): - Excellent location, quaint accommodations, no cable tv, no paper towels in kitchen or kleenex in bathroom, 3 coffees for 2 people for 2 days. In summary a bit more attention to amenities would be nice
- AlW380 (4/5): Not Good - I will admit the room was clean and comfortable but, when we first arrived we wanted to leave our luggage. We found out the door was locked and you had to phone them to gain access. We did not have a phone so we looked for a local person to use their phone. Not good. Who ever was on the other end of the phone gave us the code to get in to leave our bags and told us check in was at 3pm and said the code will work when we return. We came back at 3:45 and the code wouldn't work. Very frustrating. We had to ask a local person again to use their phone. Finally got in. No one around, there is no lift to the second floor, stairs were narrow. I would not stay here again.
- Joren (8/5): - Beautiful rooms and very good location, loved that you get the code and settle yourself down all on your own. Rooms were perfect, just wish they had extra toilet paper available. TV had so many series and movies all updated and newest episodes. Would definitely recommend
- Sy (10/5): - Great location in a quiet area of the city, clean rooms and comfortable bed. Check in and out was very easy and staff is one text away. We had a really great time in this place.
- Jayne (8/5): Pleasant stay for 3 nights - The House of Edward wad clean and opened as promised exactly at 3pm! There was a code problem with my friend's room, although it was sorted quickly and with an apology from the owner. Will stay here again.
- Nathalie (8/5): Perfect location and very comfortable - Centrally located, very comfortable ensuite rooms with small fridge. Beds and linen are highest quality which we have also found in their other property, House of Trade.
Very handy having a TV system where you can (usually) download newest films, some of which have just arrived in cinema. This is a little hit and miss but we've watched some new releases successfully.
Very responsive reception, by telephone, and checking in and out with door code is efficient.
- James (10/5): Great place to stay, highly recommended. - I really liked the no fuss self check in. The staff was very helpful when we asked about leaving our bags earlier than the check in time. They were fast to respond to me via WhatsApp (an awesome way to communicate while traveling).
Our room was very comfortable and spacious. All the right amenities of you needed them.
I would stay here again in a minute.
- Ann (8/5): Cozy, but fine in great location - Communication with the hosts was fantastic, check-in was nicely arranged in advance. Hosts were also helpful in giving us tips on parking in the orange area ~5 minute walk from the apartment. Location is great for exploring Ghent on foot. Building is not sound proof, but the neighbors were all reasonably quiet. The layout of the studio room was a little funny with the toilet on the opposite side of the room from the sink. It was also a little awkward for two people as the toilet only had a stall door rather than a full door, but would be no problem for a single traveler.
- Anne (8/5): - Great location, having a virtual desk was okay because email communication was great. Room very comfortable. You could hear people coming and going and walking around upstairs but otherwise very good.
- Keith (10/5): Peaceful hotel in Ghent - Very nice, quiet, reasonably priced small hotel on the north end of Ghent old town. Less than a hundred yards from the nearest historic square, about ten minutes' walk through one of the most beautiful old towns in Europe to the main historic cathedrals such as St. Bavo's and St. Michael's. Owners are not always on site, but are always available by phone and speak fluent English. There are also city guides available in the lobby. It's hard to imagine a better base for exploring this gorgeous city.
- jowarnockhorn (6/5): No internal sound insulation nor personal service - This small hotel ticks the quaint box and location is ok. However, there is no front desk or daily room cleaning service so difficult if things go wrong. You are acutely aware of the movements of everyone else staying in the hotel. Rooms are clean and modern, but, as the toilets are an integral part of the room, make sure you are comfortable with the person you are sharing with!
- Erika (8/5): - Great location and lovely hosts: we enjoyed our stay. We were situated streetside, which was a little noisy in the evening - nothing a white noise app wouldn’t drown out.
- joWH (6/5): Small characterful hotel - The hotel has charm and is within walking distance of the historical sights. Our first impressions were excellent but it has an annoying number of faults. There is no reception desk and no daily room cleaning. There is minimal internal sound insulation so you will hear all the comings and goings of fellow guests. Finally, the toilets are an integral part of the room so make sure you only share with someone you feel very comfortable with!
- Elisa (10/5): Great character and location - The House of Edward is in a fantastic location, the room was large, attractive and clean and self use laundry faciliities a real convenience. I would definitely stay there again.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Great stay! - The House of Edward is in a great location, near lots of restaurants, bars, and shops. The room was simple, but had everything we needed and was very comfortable.
- Billy (10/5): Ghent is a wonderful and beautiful city!ghent - Kent is a wonderful and beautiful city!
- 207guillaumed (10/5): Amazing concept - The House of Edward is a charming place in the heart of Ghent. Excellent location and value for money. Looking forward to experience the suites with sofa bed and kitchen facilities during the Ghent Festival. I believe The House of Edward has more locations. Thank you for the great service.
- Verified traveler (10/5): House of Edward for a Business Trip - I was travelling on Business and stayed in this wonderful apartment style accommodation close to the centre of Gent. As I had kitchen facilities in my room I was able to cater for myself but could have just as easily eaten in any one of the many nearby cafes or restaurants. Everything I needed in the way of kitchen equipment was provided and clean and I was even surprised by a change of towels on the second of 3 days I stayed there. Wi-fi was excellent and there was a wide range of entertainment available.
I would definitely recommend House of Edward to any travellers who do not require full hotel facilities and will be spreading the word to my colleagues.
- Nino (10/5): Fabulous - Fantastic hotel: very spacious and clean room, having kitchen in the room was amazing, quiet street still very close to the center. Caroline was very friendly and kept checking on us to make sure we had everything we need. Would stay again.
- Lauren (10/5): - Great place to stay for a few days in a real Ghent neighborhood just an easy walking distance from the old town, university & street markets. Lots of restaurants one block away, also a Carrefours grocery to pick up drinks and breakfast stuff (no in-room service or dining, but tiny studio kitchen with stove-top, microwave, fridge). Recommend that you be adventurous, young and strong (these's no lift, plus a winding wooden staircase), but you will love the young owners, Caroline and Frank, with their cheerful, helpful welcome and excellent English. Enjoy!
- Verified traveler (10/5): Great hotel, great location, a little noisy. - The House of Edward was a really great place to stay. We had the studio and it was a lovely, open and bright space. The staff was extremely helpful and check in was a breeze. The location is really good as it is an easy 10-15 minute walk to the farthest attraction. The only downside for us was the noise level at night. Our room was on the 1st floor and we had to have the windows open (no AC). There is a club or something that shares the parking lot and people from the club made lots and lots of noise... till 2-3 AM each night we were there. It didn't prevent us from sleeping, but if you are a light sleeper, it could be a problem. All in all, great stay!
- Noel (4/5): NO working tv! - NO Terestrial tv. Streaming only and that does not work! No light in bathroom and no air conditioning, making it a very uncomfortable night!
- W3215BXerinm (4/5): Noisy & Smelly - We have just returned from a 1 night stay at this "hotel" positives are the rooms are spacious and light with good decor and in a good location, however this doesn't over compensate for the negatives. If your staying on a Friday or Saturday night and are in one of the square facing rooms be prepared to get no sleep as there is a nightclub next door that's open until 4am with a constant succession of very loud drunk people coming and going / hanging around until around 4.45am - I don't know how people would manage in the summer when the windows are open! There is a vending machine in the reception - most items are out of date by a few months & the drains of the shower absolutely stink. All in all for the price you pay it's a pretty poor product. It's maybe more suitable for young couples who would be out in clubs all night and sleep all day. Also parking at the front is only short stay so you need to park in the multistory around 5 minutes walk away (if there's space and it's not a market day) personally I wouldn't recommend staying here.
- John (10/5): Perfect Location - Perfect location to explore the best of Ghent. Safe, quiet area a few steps from the heart of this vibrant city. If you want a home-from-home you won't get better than 'The House of Edward': excellent facilities and every request responded to in an instant by wonderful Caroline. Very highly recommended.
- Garrett (8/5): Good Value - We really enjoyed our stay at The House of Edward. The location is great for walking around Ghent, and the amenities were nice (there's even a free laundry room with detergent provided!).
The only downsides were a small sacrifice in privacy (it's very easy to hear other guests coming up/down the stairs and walking in a room above) and lack of a front desk (though Caroline was available via WhatsApp) but, for the value, we found this acceptable.
We'd definitely stay again!
- Karin Illum (10/5): Little gem in Ghent - Despite not seeing one person, it was a great place. Super central, clean and very comfortable. I can not recommend enough and will certainly be back
- Verified traveler (10/5): Clean Modern Beautiful Apartment - Beautiful Modern apartment with clear instructions how to enter before arrival.
Smooth self check in, clean, modern, beautiful apartment, what more can you ask for.
- Paul (10/5): Central hotel with modern facilities. - The hotel is in a great location in the centre of Ghent close to restaurants, bars and shops. The river is a five minute walk.
The House of Edward has modern facilities and is incredibly clean.
Our room was spacious with a comfortable bed and seating.
- Mr S J (10/5): Fantastic quiet comfortable place. - I have been visiting Ghent for 20 years and so pleased to find this place to stay. So much more pleasurable than your standard soulless hotel. I will certainly be back again.
- Katherine (8/5): Great base for exploring - Centrally located, clean and comfy - a great base for a weekend trip during unexpectedly cold weather. The electronic code/checking was great.
- GimmeFairGo (8/5): Comfortable stay in boutique-like accommodation - Everything was hassle-free from booking, pre-arrival (we requested an earlier check-in), to check-in (did not really have to interact with anyone), the stay itself and departure (again no interaction with staff). Very comfortable bed, excellent shower, good coffee machine (chocolates appreciated) and the though the location is a bit far from the train station it is close to a range of tourist spots and restaurants. Apart from the location (which is a bit far, especially when walking with luggage), the only other negative feedback I would have is the noise of people walking around, whether below or next door or above, that can be heard through the wooden floors. There's a vending machine conveniently in the lobby area for those who might need a snack or beverage.
- MkBrox (8/5): Interesting small hotel in quite central location - Not quite your usual hotel, no staff to be seen but we had a comfortable, spacious room on the second floor with useful mini kitchen facility. Although it was a bit short on coffee machine capsules: people might want more than 1 cup each.
Our room had all the facilities behind black doors along one wall (except the sink, which was built into the end of the unit). A bit unusual, but it worked well enough. I've uploaded photos.
The hotel was described as overlooking a square, which is true, but definitely not a bit of historic Gent. I'd guess most buildings are c20, most of the square is parking. However it was fine, there was entertainmnet watching cars hunting spaces on market morning and you are only 2 - 3 minutes walk from the lovely Friday Market Square (Vrijdagmarkt).
The hotels.com description said the hotel had parking, which is absolutely not true. It was a few minutes walk from the large underground Vrijdagmarkt car park, which was OK, but €26/day. We parked there initially but moved to a further our €10/day car park for most of the stay.
We would be happy to stay at Edward again, but may also check out alternatives if we visit again. But I suspect we might end up back at Edward on value.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Great location & nice room, but faceless service - The good things:
- comfortable and modern room + great location in a lovely city at a reasonable price.
The not ao good things:
Faceless service, all done on key codes etc. I'm not really a fan of this.
We found it to be noisy, rooms not well soundproofed. We got a sewage smell fill our room on a few occasions which was a bit grim. Its as the ensuite is behind the bed, so not completely separate. The smell would occur alongside running water from other rooms so must be where the pipework is connected. Final gripe, coffee machine in room but rations on the coffee and tea. In very short supply as only given one per person for the stay. We got one more when requesting via email but still, just the bear minimum was given. Also I thought the room might be cleaned or turned down but it wasnt.
- Deb (8/5): Great rooms in the heart of Ghent. - Brilliant location and lovely rooms. Doesn’t have all the usual hotel amentities (reception, bar, restaurant etc..) but if you want undisturbed peace and quiet this is the place to stay. perfect for us.
- Febriana (10/5): It is an amazing stay with House of Edward. - Location is centrally located in the city centre. It is walkable to all main sight attractions. We flagged a taxi back to train station and costs about 8-10 Euros for 4 only (Cheaper than bus). The room and bed is very cozy and comfortable. Cooking utensils are equipped for us to do some simple meals but I think there is no knife, only bread knife. Owner is friendly when we are requesting for hairdryer or extra oil. I really love this place so much. The only thing is we are staying upstairs so there are stairs to be taken but owner is nice to help us carry our luggage up. There is washing machine and dryer which is a plus point. Overall, it is amazingly nice!
- TravelcrazyAntwerp (10/5): Excellent location, big clean room, comfortable bed with ultra-soft sheats.Great stay ! - My husband and I stayed 1 night in The House of Edward, in order to go to the Lightfestival in Gent on 31st january 2018. It proved to be an excellent accomodation ! It is very centrally located.
The communication with the property owners went smoothly.
We got the code for the entrance door, the room and the wifi a few days before arrival.
Normally you have to let yourself in, as there is no reception, but lucky for us the congenial owner Caroline was there when we checked in.
She showed us around and made us acquainted with the facilities.
Our room (nr 7) looked out on the square. There is a dance club a bit further on the square, but as it was a wednesday night we didn't hear any noise from the club. We slept very well.
The room was big, clean and had a very comfortable bed with ultra-soft sheats. The pillows were a bit too soft for my taste, but that's personal.
The rest of the furniture consists of a relaxing chair, a dining table with 2 chairs, and a wall with what appears to be 1 big closet, but it actually cleverly hides the toilet, the shower, the sink and the mini-kitchenette (with 2 cookingplates, a micro-wave, a mini-fridge, a coffeemaker, a sink, and 2 drawers with cutleries, plates and pots).
The towels are very big and soft.
There is a televisionscreen in the room on wich there are films on demand, but we didn't watch any.
Downstairs is a communal sitting area and a vending machine stocked with anything from soft-drinks to wine (and even bottles champagne) at reasonable prices.
The breakfast is not included, so you have to provide it yourself.
There is a good bakery very close by on the Vrijdagsmarkt (Fridaymarket), however.
We had a short but great stay here and we will certainly return here next time !
- GilbertoAmsterdam (6/5): Almost good - The House of Edward is a very good looking unmanned hotel in the centre of Ghent. The location is fine, though the square is spoiled by too many parked cars. THe room we had was good, as well was the bed. The amenities (bathroom, toilet, small kitchen, wardrobe) were handily stowed away behind four large doors.
We give it an average rating, because of the street noise during the night. There is a club on the other side of the square and this causes quite some inconvenience from noisy passes by.
- RosieP1234 (8/5): Nice hotel - This hotel was unlike anything I'd visited before. Check in was relatively simple, we were lucky to bump into one of the owners upon arrival who showed us our room and gave us our code. The room was clean, there was a stain on the bed but not worth a complaint. The floor was a bit creaky and you could hear people outside but we had a comfortable nights sleep.
- TboTrio (10/5): A Cool Experience in Ghent - Great central location in Ghent, with a very comfortable and funky modern room layout and design. Parking in the underground around the corner was expensive . Definitely would not hesitate to go back.
- hgarik (10/5): Eco hause - This hotel looks like small and comfortable hause. Inside is designed as a eco place. Very comfortable beds, bathroom. If you love wooden decoration this hotel is for you. Rooms have coffe making machine.
- 679abigailp (8/5): Great concept, nice hotel - We eventually received our check in details after we contacted the hotel, they had previously been sent to Expedia, so beware if you book through a third party.
Good communication once we had made contact. Easy access to room. Fantastic location right in the heart of the city.
The lack of a front desk can lead to abuse as there was a constant tooing and froing up hollow wooden stairs(!) in the room next to ours with 2 young ladies obviously 'entertaining gentlemen' next door.
Great bed and quality bedding.
Definately would recommend
- TommyD689 (8/5): Great location and concept - Please find our experiences with this property below:
Positives:
+ great concept which saves time (no check-in time lost, no check-out time lost)
+ superb location in the city center but still quiet
+ decent size of room (room 01)
+ good bed
+ free bottle of water
+ small kitchen
+ free wi-fi
+ free bath products
+ in general clean however there is room for improvement (see below at negative points)
Negatives:
- there were city guides available for the guests on the desk in the hall but nothing in Dutch, which we found very bizar!
- no isolation inside - you could hear almost all noises from the inside
- sometimes bad smell from the bathroom was to be noticed (property should really work on this issue)
- we bought chips from the automated machine...they were out of date...not a disaster for chips but this is unacceptable!
- cleanliness was not top: dirty wine glasses, a bit of dirth in the bathroom
I would recommend this property but owners need to work on the above negative points as there are frankly too many of them for a 1 night stay experience
- robin (10/5): Fantastic Place To Tour Ghent City Center. - Fantastic place. Very clean comfortable room with clean modern bathroom. It was very cold and enough snow left over to make getting to hotel difficult. Two hour wait for cabs and the tram wasn't running. It would have been very easy to get there via tram from Gent-Sint-Pieters train station but we weren't prepared being travel weary and cold that evening. Also we were a little anxious as we had no phone and didn't have entrance code available. We had to call via hotel entrance keypad and were let in quickly. Room was very warm. Cooking facilities to eat in your room if needed. Sadly, the weather prevented us from using the private ground floor patio but you can see it. There were excellent historical and art photo books in the room and reception area. Also, ample local travel guides. They had snacks and beverages for sale including beer in vending machine. A bottle of Leffe for 1.50 euros ? We didn't take advantage though as there are too many types of Belgian ales available in local establishments. Google Dulle Griet bar which is easy walking distance.Crazy selection of biers. Highly recommend this place. Excellent proximity to all sites. Ghent is a fantastic old world city. You can feel very confident about booking a room at The House Of Edward. I could go on and on.We really liked this place and will stay here next time.
- App (10/5): Clean and convenient location - The room and bathroom are clean. Nice location within walking distance to shopping street and other attractions
- Verified traveler (8/5): - This is a nice hotel in a quiet street but very close to the historical centre. The room was spotless and the bed comfy. There’s no staff on site but they’re easily contactable if necessary. Not that it was an issue but the tv package (movies/entertainment etc that’s advertised) didn’t work...it didn’t worry us as we were too busy sight seeing but if you need your tv fix you might have been disappointed! Overall good value for money
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Fantastic all round. Thank you
- Ken (10/5): Beautiful room in a magical city. - We were greeted by Frank who was both efficient and friendly. The room was central to all of the places to visit in Ghent that were on our agenda. Frank even arranged for a car to drive our friend to the airport at 515 am the following day. I highly recommend the House of Edward!
- Michael (10/5): Comfortable and modern hotel. No elevator! - Very nice hotel. No reception: everything done via mails or intercom connection to some center. But it works.
Other notes:
Plus: good heating; very comfortable bed and bedding. Good shower.
Minus: Two stories hotel, no elevator and narrow staircase. If this is not a problem for you - it's a great place.
Worth noting:
- The TV in the room is KODI TV - not cable. We did not really try to see if it works well.
- lana (10/5): Great hotel close to Center and nice staff - Frank and Emma were great! They let me check in early even though there is no front desk staff. Hotel had everything you need in a room, and very close to all the sites in the center of the city! Amazing hotel for the price!
- Jay (10/5): - The only disadvantage of this hotel is the stairs, otherwise a superb place.
- Kalai (10/5): Wonderful Stay - We stayed 2 nights here and absolutely loved the area. Although there was no formal 'reception' area, staff accommodated us to leave our bags in the morning so that we could get a full day in the city. The house was just a few minutes walk to the castle and the town and surrounded by great restaurants. We had room #1 with a full patio area and it was lovely.
- Jennifer (8/5): Beautiful place, great location - The remodel of this old building is stunning. Modern meets rustic and very cozy. However, the “simple self check in” is not simple. Maybe they’re still working out the kinks. It was a bit of a pain, but the call box people were very kind, prompt and helpful.
- Stefanie (10/5): If you want to see the beautiful city of Ghent—Hou - Best place I’ve stayed in Europe!
- Susan (8/5): lovely gem in the heart of Ghent - Had a lovely couple of days at the house of Edward in the heart of Ghent. The room was clean, the bed comfortable and the check in and out was simple using the access code . The only slight niggle was with the wooden floor's you can hear every footstep from the room above but that can't be helped without extra sound proofing. Location was quiet but central just off a lovely square easy access to all major landmarks shopping and places to eat ect... All things considered I would stay there again.
- kim (8/5): Great Hotel - so nice experience to Gent mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm
- Gary (10/5): Great "New" Concept - Hotel of Edward is one of those No reception places, where access for guests is via a code sent before arrival. There is someone on site in case of questions, but otherwise you are on your own. Decor is very modern and minimalist, lots of room, interesting concept for bath and kitchen facilities. Everything works quite well and the bed is wonderfully soft. Highly recommended.
- Anita (10/5): Close to Gent historic centre and great room - Close to the historic centre of Gent St Pieter - 5 minutes walk away. Lots of restaurants and lovely tourist shops (not tacky) within an easy walk.
It was a studio apartment in an historic building. Newly renovated but still retained some beautiful original features eg spiral wooden staircase. Would not be suitable to those guests unable to walk up narrow stairs (I was on the second floor; no lift).
The toilet only had a glass door, so you would need to be sharing with someone you were close with!
I had a keycode to enter and leave the building - there was no check in desk or anyone to discuss concerns (if I had any, which I didn't).
I would highly recommend this place to anyone travelling to Gent St Pieter.
- Jenny (8/5): Nice stay at the house of Edward - Hotel was in a good location. Instructions on which tram stop and directions from there would be helpful. Washing and drying facilities were a great help. Staff helpful. Quiet.
Had a great stay. Loved Ghent.
