Hotel staff provided a fan heater after I informed them twice that the room is not warm enough. The hot spring is definitely a hit! Best hot spring in New Zealand I would say! A must try for sure!

Tsui-Wen (6/5): Sad first impressions - A slightly diffident reception and concerning when our booking could not be found- something I haven’t experienced through hotels.com- especially when I showed my paper printout indicating Mountain View and twin beds. But the receptionist said she would do us a favor and upgrade us to what we had already booked 3 months ago as if this would make me more grateful! Sadly on opening the fridge there was the dregs of milk left over from the previous occupants and also the tea caddy was empty- I had to embarrassingly ask for these things. All these first impressions are important and I had difficulty after that to like this iconic place.
Kelly (10/5): Tranquil place to relax.... - This place was outstanding! Took a while to get there. It suddenly appeared in a gap in the trees and pulled up. Was treated to delicious meals served by friendly multicultural staff. The hot springs pools were divine with the tranquil river flowing by at the edge of the property. Thoroughly recommended 😀
Grant (6/5): - Beautiful setting, unique environment. Place has upgraded considerably since last visited. Concept is great. Enjoyed breakfast, pools lovely. However service very mixed. Check in was lots of negatives. For a ‘health’ resort, don’t turn up here with genuine health issues. There was no bending of the rules as they were too busy. Some staff were very accommodating thankfully, but for what is supposed to be a place to get away from it all and replenish yourself, we felt very much a number. Dinner ran out of half the options so was very limited. While I appreciate the location provides challenges, there is nothing more disappointing than paying for something and getting barely enough. Just felt for the cost to stay and eat here, remembering we all came here for a special experience would be nice.
J (8/5): - The room was good except one of the beds was broken and uncomfortable. (The slats underneath had fallen out and the bed sagged) Pools and linked facilities were very enjoyable and relaxing but the restaurant was confusing. Other than an expensive 5 course meal option there was only an option of platters - of which they only had 2 of 4 available. These too were very expensive and not a proper meal. Morning breakfast was good but there were no cheaper options ($25 per head plus extra for tea.) Overall the experience was enjoyable with the exception of food choices and availablity.
Hal (10/5): - Obviously, the draw is the hot springs. Dinner and breakfast were very good. Only drawback is you have to pay extra for wi fi, which we didn’t know until we arrived.

Maryse (8/5): Beautiful but peace spoiled by noisy guests - Our previous experience with Spas have been in placed where silence is part of the experience. If this is what you are looking for, Maruia Hot Springs might not be the good place for you. The people in the rooms around us were young and speaking very loud, playing music, laughing pretty late at night. We made a few complain at reception. The reception closes at 9:30 so after that we were on our own after reception is closed to ask our neighbours to be quiet. The guy who greeted us at the reception seemed very stressed and overwhelmed by gis tasks. We loved the experience of the bath and our room was very comfortable, however the experience would have been more enjoyable and a better value for money if there were some rules about noise.

Verified traveler (6/5): A nice place that just missed the mark - Nice place that just missed the mark to be excellent. Service and rooms are nice, but a few small things would put this place at top marks. The shower head in the room sit late at about 5ft making it almost impossible to shower for anyone over 4ft 5in, this is a cheap and easy fix without re-plumbing. Paths to pools have sharp rocks not good for bare feet. For the price of the room, the could provide sandals or have them for rent. It’s billed as a “connection free” place with no TV or Wifi. However, if you want WiFi if cost an arm and a leg($50 for 500MB). They need to provide a recommendation on how to clean swimwear. The high sulfur content of the pools almost ruined my bathing suit(took 5 washes to get the smell out).

James (10/5): - A nice diversity of facilities for those who are not keen on the “generic hot springs” experience. The small number of rooms means that the site is never very crowded. Black flies (=sand flies) are expected given location. Wi-fi and food is an extra charge and not exactly cheap, and not provided within the booking. If in doubt, try the pizza!
Verified traveler (8/5): Wonderful except for the sandflies - Overall a great place to stay when travelling through the Lewis Pass. Friendly staff and simple check-in, spacious room with comfy beds. Room includes full access to all of the indoor and outdoor hot pools. Food in the restaurant was excellent quality both for dinner and breakfast. The only downsides are due to the surrounding area i.e. no mobile phone coverage and lots of sandflies. Not much the hotel can do about this but it did make it difficult to enjoy my stay at times, and I left with quite a few bites despite using the sandfly repellent provided. One of the outdoor hot pools has sandfly netting, but more areas should have sandfly nets e.g. on the room balcony, as the balcony is almost completely pointless otherwise.

Verified traveler (4/5): - That is my first time to experience the hot springs in New Zealand. The first thing shocked me is that we have to pay the money for the wifi, which reminded me of Bear Grylls. Finally, I drove to the gas station, which is 10 minutes away to send regards to friends. However, the advantage is we experienced one day without relying on the cell phone and totally absorbed ourselves into the beautiful environment. About the pools, there are four for outside and two for inside. When you try the outside ones and there is no net suspended, you will get the 100% welcome from sandflies and their families. No exaggeration. Maybe the facilities are quite different from my primary expectation, which makes me a little disappointing with this trip. Or, maybe next time we should choose to camp somewhere.

Verified traveler (8/5): A peaceful and relaxing experience - We enjoyed our stay in this remote and eco-friendly resort. While it has obviously been refurbished, it has been done well and we simply enjoyed the experience of the thermal pools and the peace and quiet of the surrounds. The rooms are small but comfortable, and robes and towels are provided for use in the thermal pools. Be warned that the sandflies are prolific and persistent, so be sure to have insect repellent on hand.
Verified traveler (8/5): Place to disconnect and relax - Maruia Hot Springs is a very nice resort if you are looking to disconnect. The hotel is by itself along SH 7 with the nearest town 10+ miles away. No cell phone service in the area. No TV in room. Internet service is available if purchased at front desk. Multiple pools and bathhouse available to enjoy the hot springs. Staff is very friendly.

Gene and Kathy (2/5): Overhyped property that is in poor repair - Hotel room and property were in poor repair. Was a cold evening and the hotel room wall heater didn't work--was obvious it hadn't worked for a long time as it was very dirty and the knobs just twirled. No blanket anywhere in the room. Very spartan uninspiring room. Property had railroad ties going from upper parking lot down to room and the railroad ties on both sides were in poor repair. The railroad ties steps on the right coming down from the parking lot were broken up and disintegrating in many places and were clearly a safety hazard. In the USA, this would be a serious OSHA issue. The advertised outside hot pools were tiny...and empty of people...and had a strong sulfur smell. There was also a sign warning of meningitis risk. We have been on the South Island for 3 weeks and all the other Expedia properties were lovely. This one is a serious outlier! Would not recommend to anyone!
