Guest Reviews
- Eliane (6/5): - Room is really small, I did not get room service/ my room cleaned during the weekend I stayed.
Definitely not what it looks like in the website
- Loretta (8/5): Magical Island - Location is perfect, roof-top terrace was great. Beautiful view to have coffee/cocktails.
Bed very comfortable, shower was good. Clean room. Nice staff. Had to request for coffee to be restocked instead of hotel just doing it. The creamer and sugar was packets were not good.
- Keith (10/5): My stay was great! - Clean room with a modern restroom. Nothing
- Jessica (10/5): -
- strom (10/5): Great - Perfect Nothing
- Joanna (9/5): -
- Cassey (9/5): -
- Dane (6/5): Needs a little more attention to maintenance - Location Broken bathroom door trapping you in bathroom, then fight your way out. Odor from drain when showering.
- Carol (9/5): - Location and staff were excellent and helpful. A chair in the room that was regular type not a bar stool for a small person. We like to end our day watching TV but the only place to sit was the bed, a chair to sit and have a drink would have been nice.
- william (8/5): Very enjoyable stay mostly due to the excellent staff. - The room was spacious with a view. The view was next to the street and we had several conversations with people walking by. The television didn’t work very well.
- Narup (1/5): If you care to sleep at all, do not stay in this hotel. Rude staff. - The location of the hotel and the rooftop area were the only good things about this hotel. The rooms have glass sliding doors, and our room was right in front of a concrete staircase. Their "quiet time" was to have been from 10 AM to 10 PM. The housekeeping staff was up and cleaning, vacuuming at 7:AM. Again, since the doors do not keep out noise, it was like they were in the same room. The two small windows on the back wall of Room 103 both opened up to the street level, where we enjoyed listening to people in golf carts roaring down the street. Even with the windows closed. The guests in the room above our room were up all night, bouncing around, and it sounded like they were going to fall through the ceiling. When I shared that information upon checking out, the front desk clerk was rude and told me that the deck was above our room, and it was locked at night; therefore, no one could have been above us. But, there is a room above room 103. In short, the location is amazing, and the housekeeping staff was helpful and kind. We have stayed in Catalina for over 30 years, staying in hotels, condos, and bungalows. Never before have we encountered such indifference and uncaring hotel staff. See above
- Michael (8/5): It was functional. - Clean room but small Being in the inner court the ambient light made sleeping difficult. The rooms just were not dark enough. Sliding glass door was entry and curtains did not block enough light.
- Ray (8/5): This charming boutique hotel was everything my partner and I needed for our seven year anniversary on a budget! - We absolutely adored the property’s convenient waterfront location, just a short walk from the ferry. The rooms were spacious, and we had a delightful deluxe king room on the first floor with a charming little balcony. It was the perfect setting for a quick weekend getaway to celebrate our 7th anniversary.
There’s also a delightful restaurant bar called the Naughty Fox. Although we didn’t dine there, we did indulge in a few of their cocktails, and they were all incredibly delicious. The toiletries and shower were great, and Dad was super comfortable in the cute robes inside the room. The staff was more than helpful, accommodating our needs. We were even able to extend our stay for the day and leave when our ferry departed later in the day for an additional fee. Some of the other rooms appeared a bit cramped in size. I would recommend booking at least a king-size room for a couple. we were lucky enough to get a room on the first floor in the back, which felt much more private than the rest of the hotel.
- Bhupinder (8/5): - Very clean
- Zihting (4/5): -
- Barron (9/5): - That my room was next to the house keeping room
- DEREK (9/5): -
- Wyatt (10/5): We stayed 3 nights and every night we slept great, got ready for the day with ease, and were very happy with everything - I loved the location and the cozy feel Honestly nothing. Super great
- Chase (10/5): -
- Korey (8/5): -
- Patricia (9/5): - Great location! Friendly staff. Excellent water pressure in shower!!!
- Rick (8/5): Great location, clean and comfortable. Roof top is great - location is really nice, roof top is an added feature for where the property is located and the nice view. Room was small but worked for 2 people
- Stachkevych (7/5): I can certainly see why it’s a three star hotel. - The location was wonderful! Not too far from the shops, restaurants and attractions, and it’s right in front of the beach! The staff was very friendly and helpful. The rooms were advertised to be bigger and more grand. The room properly cleaned, found a lot of hair and crumbs, stains on the sheets and towels. Makeup towel had weird straw-like things on it. The sliding doors were so dirty and didn’t block out noise so it was pretty loud. Bummer that they charge you for water too. Overall- I think it lives up to its 3 star hotel status. Just too expensive for what you get.
- Michael (10/5): -
- Paul (8/5): My room was perfect for 2ppl. Lovely deck for guests to enjoy the harbor view. Easy walk to everything. - Great location. Fantastic 24Hour staff. Clean and updated. Comfortable bed. Great shower water pressure. Great in room coffee. Expensive but very comparable to other local hotels. Lots of stairs but know that Avalon was built on steep hills long ago.
- Jerry (6/5): -
- Kevin (9/5): Great place for a weekend getaway - Great location and good room. Lovely rooftop patio as well Walls are on the thinner side and can hear a lot especially in the morning
- Patti B52’s (4/5): Will not book another room here. - Hotel holding our luggage at no cost for 2 hours, professional and courteous staff at check in/out. Bar inside the hotel was perfect. Our room 202 had the most uncomfortable bed. I had lower back pain the following morning. I read their reviews when I got home and saw several comments about uncomfortable bed. The shower did not work well because in order to get hot water the lever had to be turned completely down- there was no in between level. The water came out of shower and there was a puddle when you stepped out. Only one chair in the room.
- Jeri Ann (9/5): For a weekend on Catalina- a great spot - This the perfect location in Avalon. Walkable from the ferry, but not in the thick of things. Retro feel and well appointed rooms. Staff was very helpful. If you prefer a big hotel room, this may not be for you. Rooms were cozy and comfortable, but not a lot of moving space.
- Fabio (8/5): -
- James (7/5): - Location Lack of closet
- Estefany (10/5): -
- Blake (10/5): -
- Kathleen (10/5): - Staff was wonderful. Everything was perfect.
- Nebojsa (3/5): Never again - Location Not worth the value. Small room like the motel for 450 USD!
- Tracy (7/5): Comfortable - Food was very good The street was very noisy while sitting out on balcony but realize you don’t have traffic control
- Celeste (8/5): We had a great time. - Great, quiet and convenient location. Comfy bed and very clean. Nice to have little fridge. Amenities were nice; shampoo, conditioner, soaps, etc. There were a lot of stairs to get to our room on the top floor and no elevator. If we return, I’ll ask for a lower room. Also, would have been nice to have somewhere to sit in the room other than bed and one stool.
- Papassara (9/5): -
- Austin (10/5): -
- Voviette (9/5): - I didn’t like that
- Anna (10/5): Great! - Close to everything. Nice and friendly staff
- Francis (4/5): -
- Ha Young (8/5): - Very clean and great location/proximity. I would’ve preferred a regular door instead of the slide out door.
- Calixto (8/5): Almost excellent experience. - Good customer service! Bed was way too soft that made my back sore before an ultra marathon race 50 mile. My wife and I, slowly, roll in the middle.
- robyn232 (10/5): A+ Pre-Christmas Getaway - It was our first time at your beautiful hotel, and we’ve already booked our next stay. All of the staff members were friendly and helpful. We were always greeted with a smile and kind word when coming and going.
The lobby, restaurant, and bar were decorated so cute for the Christmas holidays! Incredible food, delicious drinks! I highly recommend the French toast, bacon, and buffalo milk drink. Everything about our visit at this hotel was perfect! The room was cozy, and the location is A+. Thank you Bellanca Hotel for a wonderful pre-Christmas getaway. 🎄💗🎄
- Mark (10/5): -
- Stevens (10/5): a great place to stay - great location, beautiful facility. super friendly staff. great amenities, close to everything my only complaint would be that I couldn't get the room we had dark enough. the sliding glass door and the window curtains didn't do a good job of blocking outside light from coming in. But it didn't stop me from sleeping, I would have been nice if to block more of the light though
- 382nicholasz (10/5): Catalina Anniversary Getaway - I took my wife here for our anniversary, and we loved it! It was raining when we got here and rained the whole weekend, but we had an ocean view with a MASSIVE window that opened up, and a fireplace to lounge in front of. If you have the means, spring for the ocean view, it made all the difference. We came back to our room early each night, the last two nights (of 3) we even got dinner to go so we could lounge in front of the fireplace and enjoy the sunset from our room. We will be back!
- Brad (10/5): -
- Karyn (7/5): - It was well located and as stylishly cute. Front desk staff were friendly and helpful. The room was very cramped - no place to sit (not on the bed) or put our luggage. The heater was old and extremely loud.
Unfortunately the restaurant also had sewage problems and closed down just after we sat down to eat.
- stevehZ7740GR (4/5): Bellanca Below Average - The hotel’s location is at a quiet spot on the waterfront. The ocean view is beautiful but there was no view from our room. The staff is very nice.
However our room was very small and cramped and dark and smelled musty. You can barely walk between the bed and the desk/furniture. If you are sitting in the one hair it is impossible.
The shower floor had black moldy looking grout. The bathroom floor tile was worn and looked filthy. There is a large glass window between the shower and the bedroom. Every time someone uses the bathroom at night, the light shines into the bedroom and disturbs your sleep. There is no nightlight.
We went up to the rooftop deck but it was very hot and there were not enough comfortable chairs or umbrellas to sit and enjoy the view.
There are no hooks, armoire or closet to hang clothing.
- RSM54321 (10/5): We would certainly stay there again! - Our first time to Catalina island and our experience staying at the Bellanca hotel was truly a highlight. Clean room, lovely views and a perfect location (just outside of the super busy central area, but close enough to easily access everything important). Complimentary (one speed) bikes also came in handy for local exploration and additional beach access. Highly recommended and we would certainly stay there again!
- X2239EEmikeh (10/5): Room with a view! - Great location on the west side of Avalon closest to the Casino.
Clean and comfortable and had room 101 that has one of the best hotel views on the Island.
- Culture26595191397 (8/5): Beautiful room and terrific location - This is my 2nd time staying at Bellanca. The first time was in a studio suite which was great. This time we stayed in the luxury ocean view suite. The suite is large with a separate sitting area with a sofa and table with a beautiful view of the harbor. The bed which is in a separate room was comfortable. This room and location are 5 stars. I am giving the experience 4 stars because although the roof deck is wonderful, it needs more umbrellas for shade. There was only one small area that provided shade. The staff was friendly. I would definitely stay here again.
- Del Toro (10/5): -
- trswagner (8/5): Great place to relax and enjoy the view! - Great location with amazing view of the harbor and Avalon Casino. Centrally located for walking distance to shops, restaurants, Casino and Descanso Beach. The rooms with a private balcony are nice however slightly overpriced. They are clean, well maintained and the service is good. The hotel staff are friendly and accommodating
- Ross (10/5): -
- bonniee253 (8/5): Loved all the ambience of Catalina and the really friendly hotel staff. - The hotel management and employees were really accommodating in every way. The food downstairs great, the location right on the boardwalk with a top deck view for sunning and watching the harbor below. Can’t beat that. My only complaint was that I am in my late 70s and their was no elevator to the 3rd floor. Climbing 3 fights of stairs for me was a difficult task.
- Bryan (8/5): -
- David Monroe (10/5): - Very lovely hotel I will definitely stay here again. Staff really nice really queen.
- Jacinte (10/5): - On the harbor
- Dan (8/5): - All hotels in the area similar. Great spot close to the harbor, great rooftop and friendly service, and would recommend. Things that were OK were the bed (2 of us are a combined 290 pounds and the bed drooped), shower (they should replace the old heads or clean them regularly) and air circulation (A/C did work well but you can tell there are circulation issues by looking at wall/ceiling bubbles).
- Mike (10/5): - Everything was easy
- richard (6/5): - The small rooms were very nice and recently renovated. Very helpful staff. There is a small bar and restaurant on site with limited hours. The location is perfect: walk to everything in Avalon, yet not crowded or noisy.
Did not like: the room door is just a glass sliding patio door (not very private). No bedside table lamps. Needs a second luggage rack.
- Robreya (10/5): - Staff was very accommodating
- Yuval (10/5): -
- George (10/5): - Beautiful room and a great view.
- Juan (10/5): - Great stay. Had an awesome time there
- Karen (10/5): - Very friendly staff and excellent room!
- Debra (10/5): - Great location. Free beach cruisers to use.
- johnrL1371SZ (6/5): It's ok. - We booked this hotel because it boasted cabana suites with ocean views. The room we were given was just a balcony which would have been nice if it actually was facing the ocean. Room 109 was with a balcony RIGHT on the street. Do not get this room. If you are sitting on this balcony, you can reach out and touch people walking by, they can touch you (thats how close it was to street). Also, traffic noise starts at 7am (with trash trucks picking up right outside the room). The room itself was nice, it includes small fridge, coffee maker and bottles of water. The hotel offers (first come first served) bicycles to bike around downtown and beach chairs that you can use to go directly across the hotel and sit in the sand. The hotel DOES NOT offer golf cart shuttles from the dock to the hotel so be prepared to lug your bags to the hotel both going and coming back (it's not very far but if you have many bags or small children it could be an issue). One thing this hotel did offer that was nice was a roof top area that you can sit on and watch the ocean across the street. I got the feeling that this was what they were boasting as their cabana area, but it is not private. All hotel guests can use it and the music piped in was atrocious (the front desk said they did not have the ability to change it or lower it). We've stayed on the island 3 times now, and for us, getting a VRBO is better because it is private, has more room and costs only slightly more. That being said this hotel was ok. I would have given it higher stars if the balcony wasn't RIGHT ON the street!!
- Myrto (9/5): -
- Siyu (4/5): - Very terrible service and the price is overpriced
- Lynn (10/5): - Liked the Groupon price from Newport Beach to Santa Catalina Island. Ship was clean with good amenities! Did not like the parking cost near Catalina Express by the pier. $40 per day or $120 for 3 days of parking. Street parking not available.
The Ballantine Hotel on Main Street with roof top was perfectly located!
- Sari (10/5): Perfect but expensive - Location and front staff Expensive
- Janelli (10/5): - The Bellanca Hotel is the perfection location if you want to be within walking distance of everything in Avalon, but not have to deal with the late night noise (bars and foot traffic). I will definitely be staying here again in the near future and I recommend this hotel for anyone who is visiting. The service and quality were excellent!
- hdflagg (8/5): Almost great! First floor woes. - Let's start with the good... location, location, location. Bellanca is on a great corner, with easy access to the casino and Descanso Beach and in the other direction to all shopping, restaurants, bars, and services. No further than a 10-15 walk to anywhere you want to be. The Naughty Fox is on site for a quick bite or a cocktail, which is also super convenient. I could smell the cleanliness when we walked into our room and it was definitely well disinfected and turned over.
I did have a concern when we checked in because our room shared a wall with the front office space and the lobby was steps away. The music plays until the lobby shuts down at 10pm. I asked about the noise level because I am a light sleeper. I was assured that quiet hours were from 10pm-10am, in accordance to the website. But this room was in the pathway for ALL the other guest rooms, so we could hear people coming in late or leaving early. There was nothing we could do about that, but the first morning maintenance was fixing the property bikes (think tinkering & pounding on metal), which were right outside our room at around 8am. The following morning, maintenance was fixing a damaged window to the adjoining office, also around 8:00 - 8:30am. He was clearly frustrated because he was arguing with a housekeeper about the timing of the work order. I would have let this go since we only had one more night, but after returning from getting coffee our doorway was blocked with 3-4 bikes, as they continued to repair the window. I went to the front desk (again, steps away from our room) and asked if she was aware there are guests in #105. She said, "Yes, but they're working on the window", looking at me like I was an alien. I asked that they move the bikes to another space while they work because I couldn't access the door. They found ample space around the main staircase. I mentioned the noise in the mornings and she reiterated the quiet hours. The problem is that the work was being done inside of quiet hours, which was not acknowledged. Acknowledgement & apologies go a long way for me. The only other caution I'll throw out there is be careful going up the stairs to the rooftop sitting area - they are a bit unstable with the old carpeting. Step fully on each step.
I will say that aside from the woman I spoke with about the bicycles & the gentleman who appeared to be the grumpy maintenance manager, the rest of the staff was awesome. When we checked in, the two young ladies were very friendly & warm. The bar/restaurant staff was also great. The housekeepers were also wonderful. This is not a bad hotel, but I would steer clear of the first floor rooms if possible. Otherwise, enjoy beautiful Catalina Island and all its charm.

- O1704YUbradc (2/5): Don't Stay Here! - Mildew on bathroom floor and shower stall. Shades did not prevent a direct line of sight into the room. No elevator for this 4-floor hotel. Too expensive, but good location relative to town. The hotel restaurant has sporadic hours.
- 915emileea (10/5): The best experience! - Exceptional hotel. I have to say the service at this hotel is top tier. Front desk was incredibly helpful and welcoming. The most comfortable bed I ever slept in! I love the location of the hotel as it’s near everything but it also isn’t right by any noisy bars like some of the other hotels. They give you complimentary water bottles, you can borrow beach towels and event borrow a bike for free! It was clean and quiet in the room. Overall, I would stay at this exact hotel each time I plan to visit Catalina.
- higgyl (2/5): Host have the worst attitude - Do not book here, trust me! Host were not helpful and always on there phone and do not engaged with customers. Very disappointed as it was highly recommended, I don't recommend this place
- Thomas (6/5): - Not much privacy as door to rooms are sliding glass that open to an interior courtyard.
Room was very small, bed was small and uncomfortable. Not what we expected for $500/night
- jillrZ4512ZB (2/5): Not as nice as it seems online - I stayed here for 3 nights, and while the location was good, the hotel was in poor condition, and the staff was quite rude. It was also quite noisy with street traffic at night. I don't recommend the ground floor rooms; they are not safe, and open directly onto the street. Be sure to ask about ground level rooms if you book a Cabana room.
Metropole and Pavilion (once it reopens) are better options if you go the hotel route.
- Holly (10/5): - The staff was kind and helpful and the room was comfy and clean! Great place to stay on Catalina
- xavier (10/5): 10/10 - Clean rooms, ac, restaurant, bikes, complimentary items included. Awesome
- 29elyh (10/5): Great stay at Bellanca! - Great location! Staff are helpful and room was perfect for our 3-day stay. You could slightly hear the neighboring rooms, housekeeping, and street noise. Overall, I would recommend this property to those visiting Catalina Island.
- Darrel (10/5): - Always stay here.
- Shipwreck911 (10/5): Epic Birthday! - Great Location! Nice little balcony with ocean view. Staff made it extra special with birthday champagne. Highly recommend. Visit the Descanso beach club as well for a day on the beach
- KEVIN (10/5): Clean, comfy, and peaceful! - The stay was amazing! The courtside rooms were peaceful and beautiful! The Naughty fox had amazing food and it was nice to be able to bring the food back to our rooms and enjoy it in the comfort of our hotel room.
Staff were friendly and helpful in every aspect of our stay! They helped us with our bicycle rental and were accommodating to keeping our luggage while we went to church despite us being 3 hours early for check in.
- rebeccalE8336GV (10/5): Loved the view - Had a wonderful experience. Great location. Front desk was very helpful. Love the beach cruiser bikes to get around town. Absolutely loved the baggage service. Great restaurant. With great service and a view. We had the suite and the windows open up for unobstructed view of the harbor. Will be back again for sure.
- shannongG1853LC (2/5): Deceptive marketing, terrible experience, totally overpriced - Worst hotel experience ever. Carpet was damp, shower leaked all over the floor, bathroom poorly constructed, ventilation system terrible, people allowed to party into wee ours of morning and blast music at 6AM, sewage smell right outside of slider door, yes the room had a sliding door as the entry, no mini safe or bar, staff totally unhelpful, and totally overpriced.
- Sherry (8/5): - I liked the location of the hotel. Avalon is very small so everything is walkable. This hotel is on the farther end away from the cruise ship disembarkation area which made it less crowded. The best time is after all the cruise ship people leave around 4pm and the town is quiet again.
- Tanya (10/5): - Property can have your bags sent over to where the ferry is so you don’t have to walk around with them til the ferry arrives.
- GILBERTO (10/5): - I felt that for the price that we paid for the property. All of the staff was great. The price did not reflect the product very very expensive for some areas that were not clean like the rooftop and limited older looking rooms and some worn down paint and areas I did love that they were able to provide us with chairs bikes, and other amenities that we could take to the beach. The bar was great and the staff at the bar was really good.
- Sightsee02295753440 (6/5): Not worth the money - Before arriving you fill out a pre-checkin form specifying the time you are arriving but your room is not ready until 3pm. Even if you ask at 2:50pm your room won’t be ready. The bike rental doesn’t start until 7am even though there is no policy stating when you can start renting or have to stop renting the bikes. My wife and I wanted to do an early morning bike ride (6:15am) to the start of a trailhead and hike in the morning, but had to walk to the trailhead because the bike was not “available” until 7am. We had plans at 9am so we had to cut our hike short. We checked out early (before 11am) and was hoping to keep our luggage at the front while we ran and grabbed coffee before departing; however, the staff would not let us keep our luggage at the front. The hotel experience was disappointing given the money we spent and the reviews we had seen online.
- Shannon (1/5): It was horrible, we only spent time in the hotel trying to sleep which we were unable to do. - Location Our room was disgusting and because it was Labor Day weekend there were no other options. Some of the problems: wet carpet throughout room, shower leaked all over floor and had to be repaired while during our stay, shower was moldy, bathroom poorly constructed with holes in ceiling around vent and light, no safe, no mini bar, not soundproof and adjacent room allowed to party all hours of night into early morning, sewage smell coming from somewhere immediately outside our door. Doors into rooms are sliding glass doors, poor level of privacy. I have written to hotel staff but not heard back about a refund. They were unhelpful when we were there in dealing with teenagers in next room blaring music and partying between midnight and 8AM.
- Tina (10/5): - Third time here. Always a treat :-)
- Roberta (10/5): - Great location and staff and amenities and times!
