Guest Reviews
- Andrew (10/5): - The staff were the most helpful hotel staff ever! Nothing was too much trouble. Breakfast was great. Bed was large and comfortable.
- Verified traveler (4/5): Very, very poor - We stayed I room 8. I appreciate that this is an old building, however, the decor is very tired, the bed was awful and really uncomfortable, the carpets throughout the building are worn with bald patches and the filth behind the bed was disgusting. Also, there was no light bulb in the bedside lamp. Towels and bath mats were thread bare. Overall a very unsatisfactory experience.
- Darren (4/5): Needs major investment - Check in was weird, no one around so once through key code door had to hunt for rooms. Property condition is poor, carpets worn, old decor.
Hot water ran for few mins then off, threadbare towels. A Sign saying windows don’t work. Room was clean to be fair. Door lock falling off. For over £90 a room it was very poor. Glad it was only 1 night. Would not return. Not sure how the reviews are so high. Don’t like pitting under 3 stars but that’s my true reflection
- Pam (10/5): An absolute gem - Stumbled across this hotel by chance and we'll definitely be back to experience the hotel in another season. Amazing building and grounds
- Nicholas (10/5): - Spacious rooms with big internal garden area. Quiet and nice area, in the middle of Chepstow. Contactless check in was fine and easy to follow. Good cooked breakfast in the morning. Perfect for our one night stay.
- Natalie (6/5): - The property looks nice from the road, and is a good location, but it’s tired once you are beyond the first reception room . Carpets are stained and threadbare. The room was a good size but the lock was barely hanging on with loose screws. The bathroom was ok, but quality wasn’t great. No toilet roll holder. Overall very disappointing and not worth the money.
- Alan (4/5): - I believe the new owners have been working hard to get this place back up to speed. I feel they still have a lot of work to do. Bed was from the 1970's, room felt a little damp and uninviting, bathroon needed renovating, the place felt tired and creaky.
- Libby-Rose (2/5): - Avoid this hotel, the room was dirty - there was a huge dent in the mattress.
- Huw (10/5): - Nice place. Great location. Nice breakfast with super friendly service.
- Abigail (2/5): RODENT INFESTATION. DO NOT BOOK. - PLEASE DO NOT STAY HERE. This hotel is the worst I have ever stayed in within the UK. The room smelt musty and has not seen a lick of paint for decades. There were holes in the walls; damaged, worn carpets and rusty pipes. The door lock was loose as it was missing some screws. But the worst part was MOUSE DROPPINGS on the table where the drinking glasses are kept, and on the single bed and the towels which were in a basket on the floor. This happened overnight as we were sleeping. Don’t expect a “Castle View” if you are put in the annexe at the end of the garden. The only view you get is a fence. The walls are paper thin, and you can hear every movement from the room upstairs including a very loud extractor fan. The whole hotel is dilapidated. There is rubbish stored in corridors, like old bits of carpet and cardboard which look like they have been there for months. There is no-one to complain to as the hotel is unmanned. We complained to the lady serving breakfast, and although she apologised, she said there was nothing she could do as she was nothing to do with management. Thank goodness we were only booked for one night. We sent an email to complain, but 4 days later we have had no response. I have no idea how this hotel gets good reviews – those people didn’t stay in the room we did! I hoped to get a response from the hotel, but I have had none. I have reported the rodent infestation to the local Environmental Health department.
- Verified traveler (2/5): Castle view - The hotel was convenient for the location for tourist attractions and the town.
Beds were neatly made but no extra blankets. One side of king size bed was sloped and very uncomfortable and the other side springs were coming through. Very uncomfortable.
Heating goes off at 8pm, room was like sleeping in a fridge. I had hardly any sleep first night as I was so cold.
Inside and near the staircase and our room carpets were thread bear, covered in stains and musty smells.
Our bedroom carpet was dirty, stained and threadbare and very old. Walls needed a coat of paint. Cobwebs everywhere, dead spiders too. Damp on the bathroom window seals and walls. The bathroom door was dirty and hook was breaking off the veneered wood door. Handle was dirty.
Could do with updated to new carpets, painted walls, pelmets and cordless kettle and replace the 1970’s hairdryer. Replace lampshades and put pelmets around window and double glaze them.
Put some extra touches like biscuits, herbal teas and small hotel toiletries.
Photos on your website are not true to what’s it looks like. So glossy and inviting but we got the opposite. Very disappointing.
- Angela (2/5): Never stay at a hotel while filming is occuring - We checked into the castle view on Friday night to find a film crew still filming The owner was there who was very disorganised and it took ages to check in No apology for the disruption the film crew caused We settled into our room and decided to go out for some food We opened our door to complete darkness and had to walk in darkness to top of the landing to put on a light on to find the film crew still filming We were rushed out of the hotel by the crew There was loads of film equipment through out the hotel which appeared to be fire risk We had stayed in this hotel before but would never returning Our booking should have been cancelled by the owners when they decided to allow a film crew to use it
- Tina (6/5): Needs a bit more tender loving care - This property is accommodation only and you deal with no people. You are given a code etc. I would assume as the builders are still about that this is a work in progress if that is the case then the poor condition of the rooms can be forgiven. Apart from that it was in the perfect location for us.
- Dave (8/5): - A old place with some character.
- Helen (4/5): - The property is a lovely old building. But you can see that it needs some investment. My room, the bathroom light has fallen off. In the bedroom the carpet was threadbare in parts. The skirting boards next to the bed and under the TV table were filthy. The paint was peeling off the windows. The bedding and towels, although they had been laundered had an awful musty smell. The bathroom was clean.
- Alex (8/5): Perfect for Chepstow Castle Events - I visited Chepstow for a concert at the Castle and this hotel was the nearest hotel to the venue.
It's old, homely and comfortable
The contact free check in was a little worry with no text coming through in the morning, but this was sorted easily enough by phone call.
The hotel is being renovated at the moment and TBH the rooms need a little love from the carpets to the bathroom.
Everything is comfortable though and the location is perfect.
- Max (2/5): Needs work - The good parts: I had an acceptable sleep and the location was good for where we wanted to visit in Chepstow and further abroad. Chepstow itself is a pleasant little place.
Unfortunately, room 8 didn't have curtains or blinds so for light sleepers it wouldn't be the best. I wasn't happy with the bathroom as the toilet brush was clogged and the shower didn't work. When I called the staff in the morning I was told a plumber would be there in 20 mins. Well over an hour later we still had nothing, so we left.
- Max (2/5): Room 8, not ready to be used, wrong to advertise - The good parts: I had a decent sleep and the location was good for where we wanted to visit in Chepstow and further abroad. Chepstow itself is a pleasant little place.
Unfortunately, room 8 was not up to scratch and wasn't ready to be used. During check-in I didn't receive all the codes I needed so they need to work on getting these out. The room didn't have curtains or blinds so for light sleepers it wouldn't be the best (see picture). The bog brush is an abject disgrace and grossly unhygienic (see picture). The shower didn't work, when I called the staff in the morning I was told a plumber would be there in 20 mins. Well over an hour later we still had nothing, so we left.
Personally, I wouldn't put someone in there if I had a guest room like that. I would take responsibility for my establishment and make sure the facilities are fully working, and I would at least apologise for the inconvenience and offer a refund. There wasn't an apology or refund forthcoming.
I work in sales so I spend my time trying to solve people's problems. I'm just here on holiday trying to enjoy myself but find I've been rinsed for a room that's not fit-for-purpose. Find another place.
- Max (2/5): Missing the basics - The good parts: I had a decent sleep and the location was good for where we wanted to visit in Chepstow and further abroad. Chepstow itself is a pleasant little place.
Unfortunately, room 8 didn't have curtains or blinds so for light sleepers it wouldn't be the best (see picture). The toilet brush is unhygienic (see picture). The shower didn't work, when I called the staff in the morning I was told a plumber would be there in 20 mins. Well over an hour later we still had nothing, so we left. There wasn't an apology or refund forthcoming.
- Faisal (6/5): Too expensive - Too much money to pay for a room with no breakfast provided! and no staff on the premises where you can leave your luggage, had to screw the part where the lock goes into the door back on as it was in secure.
- Lewis (10/5): - Great location, quiet and comfy querky rooms. Would definitely stay here again.
- Lisa (6/5): - Fantastic location. The Staff couldn't do enough to please. Excellent Breakfast. BUT the room we were in Number 12 was well lets say Poor. Very cold in the room only 1 radiater was working, Shower head was unusable to be honest kept falling down. The light in the bathroom above the mirror not working. Little thing like the toilet roll holder was broken. Generally needs a good make over. It was not worth £85 a night. This is a true review to my opinion.
- James (6/5): You get what you pay for (in a good way)! - Chepstow is a lovely spot for a quick get-away and Woodfield House is ideally suited for visits to the Forest of Dean and Wye Valley.
The hotel itself is basic with self check-in and only modest amenities. I marked it down a little on cleanliness but it is an old building so getting the modern clean look is difficult. I guess the problem is that this listing photos are very very good and slightly mis-representative. Some maintenance to the carpets and bathrooms wouldn't hurt either.
The staff (when you meet them) are friendly and helpful; the breakfast is limited in choice but actually very good.
I think my conclusion is that this is a good value little place as long as you have reasonable expectations
- Roger (8/5): Woodfield House Chepstow - Room was ok started to look and feel tired.Floor was uneven , Breakfast was really nice and fresh .
- paul (8/5): - Great breakfast
- Glyn (10/5): Racing trip - Very surprised had read some not so good comments. This place is very old and quirky. Easy access no fuss lovely breakfast just what u want .
- paul (10/5): - Stayed here many times and always been excellent. Every room is unique and full of character but functional and clean. Breakfast included is superb and staff friendly. It is a shame the hotel is up for sale and not taking future bookings, I will miss staying there.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - Initial check in was tricky as did not receive a code to enter building for “self check in”. Called and was given code. Lovely old building full of charm and character. Our room no 14 was out the back at the bottom of the garden. On walking in we immediately smelt damp and could see that there had been a big leak from room above at some point. Room was nice and spacious but needs attention and work doing. Slept ok in “double” bed which was 2 singles pushed together, however the crack between the two was noticeable.
Very hot water for bath or shower, always good. Breakfast was lovely and waitress very polite.
- Debbie (6/5): - There was no actual contact from the owners/proprietors of the property. Everything was online and I could not get an answer to a query either on the phone or by email. It was a self-service check-in all very impersonal. The room was basic, in need of redecoration and was damp and cold. There were signs of previous water damage which I suspect made the room so cold and damp smelling and feeling.
The breakfast was alright and the person serving was very nice.
- Ann (8/5): The hotel is in a nice location in Chepstow. - I only stayed one night as a stop over, the room was nice a clean, the only thing I didn’t like was all the 3 sets of doors up the stairs towards your room. I know they should be there as it’s an old building, but I do think you should be aware of this at the time of booking. Especially with 2 dogs it wasn’t made easy.
My overall experience was good they served a lovely breakfast in the morning and it in a really nice location there plenty of places to walk and see. You are spoilt for places to have a evening meal. I would still recommend staying at this hotel.
- Terry (10/5): - Great place great location
- Anthony (10/5): - I wanted to enjoy an English inn experience and got it with Woodfield House that had excellent service from the two ladies who saw to breakfast and the rooms.
The Woodfield also has a wonderful and tranquil garden that has to be enjoyed after breakfast or to end your day!
I was there for 12 days to attend my daughter's wedding, so it wasn't a holiday per se for me, but if I return to Chepstow for a future visit, I will book my stay at Woodfield.
- Steve (6/5): Won't be going back. - No code had been sent to us for the front door. Locks on front door are unreliable, as found by us & 2 other guests, & there is no reception. The room was damp, tested by meter in bedding, walls & floor, & the RH was very high. The bed was VV uncomfortable.
However, breakfast, & the lady organising, were fab!
- Carolyn (10/5): - Easy to check in and very handy for everything in Chepstow. Breakfast was delicious, with huge portions.
- garry (10/5): - All good
- Beth (10/5): - Beatiful b&b in the towm cente. Loved the secluded garden and was close to castle too. Friendly and kind staff made me feel at home. Would highly recommend
- Nick (10/5): - A really nice stay local to all
- Allison (4/5): Do not stay here! - Dreadful property, we booked a signature double room but were put in a standard room in an annexe building at end of the garden. There was thick dust in places, no handle on inside of patio door which is both a fire and security risk, bathroom door didn't shut properly, fire assembly point doesn't exist (thank god we didn't need it) stains on carpet and walls, shower Pol held up with hair bobbles, door and window frames on the outside are rotting, and there is someone living in the room upstairs who came in early hours of morning and woke us each night with his TV and then each morning with foul language from his friends.
Rang hotelier on arrival about the room not being what we booked and found him to be rude and passing blame, he also hung up on me and then wouldn't answer again. Saving grace was he offered a refund of the difference in price of the two rooms. Unfortunately it was after this call that we discovered everything else wrong with the room but didn't have any faith he would answer phone.
Plus points - breakfast was nice but lots of fruit flies around the continental items, lady who served us was lovely and properly itself is directly opposite Chepstow Castle so location is good
- Trudi (10/5): - We loved staying at Woodfield House. A lovely charming guest house, close to the train station and shops, and right next to the castle. The staff were very friendly, setting us up with a well cooked breakfast, in a very peacefull, beautiful dining area. I wish we could have stayed longer to explore the pretty courtyard and the quaint lounge area. We will definitely stay again given the opportunity in the future.
- Andi (10/5): Excellent - What a lucky find, I just picked at random for an overnight stay In Chepstow for one of the concerts at The Castle.
Couldn’t be better location, just a few seconds walk to the venue with a view of it from my window. Lovely quiet room at a great value price.
The building is spectacular, friendly service and a superb breakfast. If ever I’m back in Chepstow I’ll stay here again
- Angela (8/5): - Meet all expectations
- Philip (6/5): - The bathroom was very poor with the bath held together with lots of tape. No separate shower. And not very clean. The bedroom was clean. The building was dated 1628(!) so expected it to hold unusual bits but felt unsafe using stairs.
- Craig (8/5): - Easy access and well located
- Joanne (8/5): - I loved my stay great location amazing view of the castle room 7 however if you don’t like some noise of the pub music and transports to and from the car park then maybe another room would be best but I like looking out the window and listening to people and the busyness! Very clean and comfy bed and all through the BnB is lovely and quirky . Tea /coffee facility in the room with a little kettle . Overall lovely stay will return and see more if the outstanding views of Chepstow/Monmouth .
- Margaret (8/5): Pleasant stay - Stayed for 4 nights and would stay again.
Room clean and bed very comfortable.
Very old interesting building ....a little TLC needed in places.
- maria-stella (10/5): - Everything was amazing!! If only we had more days to stay!! Amazing stay, amazing breakfast, amazing people, extremely clean!! It was absolutely perfect!! Hope one day we visit again!! Thank you for everything!!
- Jo (6/5): - The room was nice, but the staff weren’t very friendly. The location to the town centre and places to visit is great. I only had breakfast on my last day there, and while the variety was good, my poached eggs tasted a little weird. I would stay again though.
- phil (8/5): - Self check in which i didn't mind. Decor was tired, however the cleanliness was excellent and location of property was great. For the price paid i will return again should i visit the area in the future.
- Donald (2/5): - The entry was not easy. My room #7 was on the top floor and the stairs were too steep. The floor was like a hilly walk. There was no shower. All in all a not very good experience. I cannot say I have stayed in worse places. This was terrible.
- Jonathan (6/5): - I expected a better welcome, the door keypad isn't obvious as you need to active it with your hand.
No hot water on the 2nd night so we couldn't bathe.
- Diane (6/5): It could have been better..... - We were here with a couple of friends and we were all rather disappointed with the rooms. The door to our room was difficult to unlock and the bathroom door didn't close easily. The bed had another mattress on top of it, which made it too high and uncomfortable as we kept rolling towards the middle. The breakfast, however, was very good and the lady was extremely helpful and polite. My husband asked it there was any Colman's mustard but there wasn't. The next morning there was a pot of Coleman's mustard on his table which she had brought in from home. How lovely was that!
It was a shame as the hotel could be really wonderful with a little TLC.
- Alyn (10/5): Nice overnight stat in heart of Chepstow - Lovely spacious bedroom with teà/coffee making facilities . Clean bathroom. Excellent breakfast with a range of options. We booked it to stay close to a wedding venue . It was an ideal location.
- Rachel (10/5): - Great place to stay, nice room, tasty breakfast and good location. Have already recommended to family.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - Great location, fabulous breakfast but the room was dated and in need of upgrade
- Paul (10/5): - Overall I am very pleased with my stay and will stay again. It is the best value for money I could find for my purposes as an overnight stay in the area I was working
- Charles (8/5): - Hotel and staff friendly, breakfast was very nice. A few minor items need addressing in the general areas and the rooms, closer attention to details in maintenance.
- Andrew (4/5): Okay - Room was clean but tired.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Superb evening meal and an excellent breakfast.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - Room was shabby, door didn’t close properly, couldn’t open the window properly and it was boiling, the ceiling has a massive crack and looks like the room above is about to come through. Bed sheets were dirty. Shower head didn’t stay up. The lady that did breakfast was lovely and very helpful.
- Daniel (10/5): - Room was clean, bed was comfy and a tasty breakfast. Car Park opposite as well. Great place to stay
- Melville (8/5): Great location - Staff very helpful and everything you'd expect, breakfast was excellent. Plenty of tea and coffee on room.
- Tracy (10/5): Excellent value - Really enjoyed our stay. Lovely room, bright and clean. Friendly lady at breakfast, lots of choice.
Parking immediately opposite.
My only comment would be that there’s only a light blind, so we were awake as soon as the sun rose, far earlier than I needed or wanted to be!
- Angela (6/5): - The check in was excellent but the bed was quite uncomfortable The bathroom had an odd odour which appeared to be coming from the drains
- Salv (10/5): - Car park and castle directly opposite, reastaurants, high street 5 minute walk, all very convenient for a short relaxing break. Simply arrive, park up and no need to use the car again until it's time to go home.
- James (10/5): - Room 4 could benefit from bathroom maintenance.
Bath panel falling off and only one out of the 3 ceiling lights working.
Other than that a lovely stay as always.
- Kim (10/5): Lovely short stay - It was a lovely short stay the hotel was lovely, spotlessly clean, breakfast was realy good. The bed was to high for me there were two mattresses which i had to climb up to get into bed which was not comfortable. Apart from that i would return but not to that room I would request a lower floor if possible. The staff were very nice as well.
- Mark (8/5): - This hotel is small but welcoming, perfect for one or a few nights stay. Pleasant decoration, though bathroom could do with a little work as bath panel hanging off, but clean and functional. There is a log burner in the reception room which would be nice on a cold evening, and a garden with a fish pond which was convenient to take dog out to and had picnic tables to sit at. We only stayed one night and had dinner at a pub by the river which was nice and in waking distance. The hotel is opposite the castle which is lovely. Parking convenient across the road and reasonably priced. Breakfast was faultless and delicious with good few option as to suit all appetites, lovely coffee and fresh orange juice, served to order by lovely lady who I presumed either owns the place or has a close hand in running it. Was my fault, but when we arrived I hadn’t rung ahead to find the code for the front door, and the place was unattended at around 8pm. Was able to get the number from online enquiry however. Windows are single glazed so was some noise from passers by we could hear, and local pub, though road was quiet at night. This didn’t stop us sleeping well in the very comfy bed. Thank you
- Bill (10/5): - Very lovely room, clean and spacious
- James (10/5): - This 1648 hotel has lots of character and having a four poster bed sets it apart from a chain hotel. Exceptional value with full breakfast included in reasonable price. Self-service check-in. Fabulous location looking across to castle.
- Lester (8/5): I would stay again - Easy paid parking over the road. Good quality breakfast.
Nice and quiet slept well.
- natalie (8/5): Lovley place to stay - The room was lovely , loved the bed a few cob webs up high. Just one possable suggestion to add curtains the light came through the blind first thing in the morning ,Staff we friendly and helpful hoping to back in may.
- Verified traveler (4/5): Room - Whilst the building is old the window wouldn’t close so was quite noisy with traffic and people passing by. The shower didn’t have a door on it although the door was there leaning against the shower. On a positive breakfast was good and the service at breakfast was good.
- Alison (8/5): - Value for money, conveniently located. Comfortable basic room.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Recommended - Very pleasant stay in this lovely old property. The room was clean and comfortable, and the breakfast was very good. There is a lovely garden at the back of the property. The long stay car park opposite is ideal and we had a view of Chepstow Castle from our window. I had to ring with a query before our arrival and the gentleman who answered the phone could not have been more helpful. We would certainly recommend this property.
- dale (10/5): - The breakfast was
- Lydia (6/5): - I cannot stress enough how noisy this place is. The floorboards in every single inch of the place creaks like you’ve never experienced before! It is so loud. What makes it worse is that the walls are paper thin and you can hear everyone’s movements throughout the whole hotel all the time, even down to their toilet flush! What’s more is that you can hear every single word people say outside all night because the walls and windows are paper thin. Needless to say neither of us slept a wink!
The two good things are that the place is clean with tea/coffee in the the room etc and the breakfast was lovely. The lady serving the breakfast was super polite, helpful and friendly.
Apart form that, there is no staff, contactless check in and check out, if you didn’t have any breakfast, you’d literally not see anyone the entire time which we thought was strange and not welcoming.
Parking is in a small car park right opposite which is a good location, but it is not free!! It is also hard to find a space most of the time!!
Convenient for us as we needed to walk to the train station.
Can finish without stressing again how creaky these floorboards where, every single step you took. If you choose here, you’ll see I’m not exaggerating (room 4)!!
- Owen (10/5): - All good
- Chris (10/5): - Very comfortable bed/ thank you for the upgrade. I had to leave before breakfast service started which is a shame as I know from previous visits that the breakfast is superb.
- Edward (10/5): Definately worth a visit - A fantastic hotel opposite cheap public parking a short walk from Chepstow town centre.
The hotel was clean, the room spacious, and the breakfast was superb served by an excellent staff member.
Great value and highly recommended.
- Chris (8/5): - Nice overnight stay
- Gillian (8/5): Winter stay - It was a lovely stay in a very very old building!! With great views of the castle
Staff very very helpful and friendly
- Hilary (10/5): - Very central and comfortable guest house with an interesting history. Car Park with electric charging was directly opposite and an excellent Italian restaurant was just up the road. Great freshly cooked breakfast.
