Guest Reviews
- Denise (10/5): A cosy, comfortable stay in the centre of Winchester. Perfect base for exploring. - The location was superb. Just a short walk to the city centre. The property has everything you could possibly need. The owner has thought of everything.
- Frances (9/5): Fantastic weekend in a beautiful cottage. - Beautiful and thoughtful decoration of the cottage, well-equipped, great shower! The owner had put milk, eggs & wine in the fridge which was much appreciated. I cooked a meal each night and all the equipment I needed was there. Lovely patio & little garden. And it was extremely quiet, despite being really close to the train station and the town centre. We walked everywhere, Winchester is a very walkable town. It helped that we had glorious sunshine every day. Can't think of anything.
- E (9/5): A great stay. - The location couldn't be more convenient: a very quiet street close to the station and a short walk from central Winchester. Mike's put a lot of thought into the furnishings and decoration and has provided everything you could need. There's an extremely well equipped kitchen and many amenities not usually found in a rental. He's also quick to respond to any enquiry or problem. The small bed - needs to be replaced by a king size double.
If coming by car be warned: even with the parking permit that's supplied, it's extremely difficult to park in Winchester.
- Chapman (8/5): We loved it - nicely set out. Home from home ambience Parking was a pain
- Keith (10/5): Absolutely perfect stay. Highly recommend. - Such a perfect cottage to stay in. Well equipped kitchen with everything you need with lots of extra supplies and goodies to enjoy. Fabulously clean. Very comfortable furnishings and lovely log fire with a wood supply. Very interesting cottage with lots of history. Handy guide book for any questions you may have but the owner was really good with his communications. Great garden area . Within easy walking distance to Winchester city centre. Could not fault this property. Perfect stay. There was nothing to dislike
- Joanne (10/5): Beautiful quiet haven with easy access to city - In a quiet location within easy reach of the city centre, Hang Your Hat is a beautifully presented haven. Mike has thought of everything you could need and provides comprehensive and thoughtful information about the property and city. We were there on a wet weekend and were warm and cosy. One of the most beautiful places we have stayed in the UK.
- Graham (10/5): An excellent cottage as a base to explore Winchester. - The location was good and amenities close by. The cottage was beautifully decorated and very well appointed. Despite the owner providing a parking permit for our stay, parking is a problem in Winchester generally.
- Mary-Kate (10/5): The perfect cosy getaway. - Fantastic facilities, location and the extra little touches were fab! Nothing!
- Balint (9/5): -
- dennis (10/5): My wife and i enjoyed this beautiful cottage which had everything there - Home from home Nothing
- Georgios (10/5): Great place, really clean and at a great location. - Everything was great. The property’s location was perfect for us, everything was accessible by foot. The property was really pretty and it was very clean as well.
- Timothy (9/5): Charming cottage stay in the heart of a beautiful historic town. -
- Dennis (10/5): -
- Atton (10/5): We’ll definitely stay here again and have already recommended to friends & family - Fascinating and cosy place, and perfectly located for visiting Winchester Nothing
- Sarah (10/5): Highly recommend this Beautiful Cottage Hang Your Hat. - A beautiful & very comfortable cottage Our host Mike was a lovely guy & nothing was too much.
The cottage was decorated lovely & had some really nice features
The garden was a bonus as we were lucky with the weather we did make full use of it. Our last evening there we had dinner outside & with the outdoor lighting it made for an enjoyable & relaxing time
The location to the centre was spot on a few minutes walk & you were in the centre of everything Bars Cafes Restaurants
Really couldn't want anything more
Would highly recommend this cottage. Can honestly say nothing!
- Brian (10/5): A joy to stay there. - Beautifully decorated, everything thought through. Welcome drinks and a fridge stocked with the essentials. Lovely garden. Just perfect. Perfect
- zmr_dlr (10/5): Lovely and convenient outside London - We spent 10 great nights in this cozy charming row house just an 8 minute walk from Winchester station. Winchester boasts plenty of sights of its own, but we chose Winchester so that we could easily use our railpass to get around to lots of other sights including Portsmouth Dockyards, Arundel, Isle of Wight, Henley, and a short trip South to hike back to Winchester along the Itchen Navigation Trail. London is a 30 minute express train ride away to well connected Waterloo station. The house had a cozy lounge with TV where we could kick back and relax after a hectic day. And the kitchen had everything we needed to cook dinner, or enjoy local take-away including Indian, Chinese, pie, and fishnchips. Sunday we made a champagne brunch and enjoyed the bright airy kitchen and private patio area. The management was helpful, accomodating, and had left us welcoming surprises to enjoy our stay. We took full advantage of the clothes washer and complete instructions were available for all the apartment features. Upstairs was a lovely restful bedroom and a small den suitable for reading, or planning, or napping. Easy walk to excellent pubs. Just a very relaxing and enjoyable stay all around.
- Watt (10/5): A dream holiday home that makes you want to return there and relax in the evening after a day out. - The house is immaculate but also fully equipped and charming. An absolute joy to stay in. Very thoughtful host who left treats and also instructions for everything.
Perfect location and with the weather we had a wonderful garden to enjoy too. All was superb
- Carolyn (7/5): Worth staying in summer to have private courtyard. - location was great as it is walking distance to train station, high street etc. Has good cooking facilities and generous with the coffee pods and fresh milk. the bed was very uncomfortable. Sofas very uncomfortable too. Bathroom is nice but no where to hang towels or put your toiletries.
I was there in summer & hot weather, but the patio furniture was very dirty. Lots of information/ instructions about the property and often contradictory, then final message different again. Keep it simple.
- Simon (9/5): A perfect base from which to enjoy the sights of Winchester! - Very stylish and really comfortable and well-resourced!
Great location!
- Graeme (10/5): -
- Maria (10/5): Cozy place for two, exemplary host who thought of everything - Very clean, attention to detail amazing, beautiful little place for two Nothing not to like.
- Paul (10/5): Exceptional -
- Nethercott (9/5): Great little house in a perfect spot - Very convenient location, great communication and a lovely house with everything we needed.
- Katharine (9/5): Superb - Great location 5 mins from station and 10 mins walk from town centre. Cottage was spotless. Very well equipped kitchen and lots of thoughtful touches such as a ready laid open fire, and piles of books, games and DVDs to pass the time. Wish the weather had been warmer so we could have sat in the garden.
- Paul (9/5): Superb -
- Emma (10/5): Exceptional - Beautiful property, lovely extras. Highly recommended
- Walburn (9/5): Superb - Very well equipped, beautiful cottage.
- G (9/5): Ideal for a break in Winchester for the Christmas markets. Cosy and no more than 5 mins walk to all the attractions. - Location and attention to detail. It had everything you could want. Free parking. Quiet. Good. Heating and water systems. Responsive host. The only downside is the bed is comfortable but smaller than I would like.
- David (10/5): Nice guy, very thoughtful making it a very pleasant stay - I liked the little touches like the prosecco in the fridge. I also loved the fire with logs and fire lighters supplied. Nothing, it was a lovely cottage, well maintained and clean with loads of information
- Gregory (10/5): A quiet cottage retreat near the centre of town. - Really cosy cottage in a quiet but central part of the City of Winchester. Lovely place, great garden area. Friendly and helpful communication. Welcoming atmosphere. Nothing not to like.
- Christina (10/5): Exceptional - Hang your hat was a delightful place to stay! It has charm, character, super clean and well situated. Mike was a wonderful host! Was great at communicating with me, worked with me on arrival and departure times, had very detailed information on how to use items, where nearest stores were, sightseeing info, even info on some of the decor. When I mused one day if there was something to use in the kitchen, my spouse replied -"there has to be one, Mike has thought of everything!" Indeed he has! Not only was there coffee, there was milk, eggs and wine in the refrigerator so no need to find a grocery right away. There were even flowers! I loved the outside patio, the bathroom, the cozy rooms. Everything was very clean and functional but with a feeling of being home. I loved the different hats too.We were able to walk from the train station with our luggage to the apartment. We were pleasantly surprised at the charming and relatively quiet side street on which it was located. Walking to the main tourist areas was easy as well. We loved this place! Nothing not to enjoy. Just a word of caution if you have mobility issues that the bedroom is upstairs and the bathroom is downstairs.
- Amy (10/5): The host was very hospitable and the place was exceptionally well equipped and clean. -
- Christine (10/5): Well set up small terrace with delightful courtyard for outdoor eating in warmer weather. - Clean and incredibly well set up small terrace house in Winchester not too far from the High St. Generous host has thought of everything to make the stay comfortable. Parking availability was sometimes a challenge. Elderly travellers might find the stairs a challenge.
- Petra (10/5): very charming house and garden and a perfect host; could not have been better -
- Alexndl (9/5): Superb -
- Anne (8/5): Lovely well equipped cottage with a gorgeous garden - Very homey atmosphere and personal touches we appreciated. The owner was quick to respond when we had an issue and helped immediately. A beautiful garden!!! Bathroom is large with a great shower but not on same floor with bedrooms.
- Martin (10/5): Exceptional -
- Emma (10/5): Exceptional -
- Jon (10/5): The perfect base to explore Winchester from - The location was great - really nice and quiet but close to the centre. There were instructions on how to operate everything in the house, but also interesting info about the history of the property and the art/furnishings. The property itself was just SO cosy and homely. Perfect! Nothing
- Douglas (10/5): Superb find and great stay. - The house is beautifully presented and more like entering someone's cherished home than a holiday let. There are multiple interesting artefacts and pictures and Mike explains the origins of many in his interesting folder. Comfortable furniture and bed make for relaxing time in a nice quiet street. Really handy for walking into town and good eateries. It was immaculately clean throughout and some nice "essentials" in the fridge was a nice touch. And, where else is there a decanter of scotch tucked away in the beautiful little sitting room cum library upstairs. The secluded garden would be a great boon in good weather. This place is a magical find and it would be difficult to find a cosier little cottage in mid city than this. It's exceptionally well equipped and we wish we'd been staying longer than three nights. It would be churlish to try to find anything wrong.
- Bob (10/5): One word - FAB-U-LOUS!! - Everything! Nothing
- Mark (10/5): Exceptional - Lovely cottage very close to the centre of Winchester. A cosy place in a quiet street with a well equipped kitchen and decent sized rooms.
- Steve (10/5): Excellent location for Winchester. - A Christmas Tree and decorations were a nice touch as were the other extras. The host ensured everything was OK and kept in touch as necessary to ensure we were happy. Great facilities and clear instructions of use of equipment. Directions were clear. Host helped us to find good eateries etc. The property was excellent. There was nothing to dislike.
- Anonymous (8/5): Charming,comfortable cottage. -
- Strange (9/5): We had a lovely time and loved that was such a short walk into town. - We loved the location, the real fire, the well-equipped kitchen and the very hot shower.
- Pett (10/5): Exclusive accommodation full of charm - Superb attention to detail. Bed was too small
- Sue (10/5): Exceptional -
- Susanne (10/5): Delightful. - We enjoyed the charming, beautifully furnished and well-situated cottage, which was immaculate, clean and supplied with everything we could wish for during a short stay in Winchester. Owner, Mike, communicated in a warm and thoughtful way with us. Parking was tricky.
- Narinder (10/5): Lovely place to stay in Winchester - The location of Mike's property was perfect for us - the narrow street had terraced houses on both sides, but it was really quiet, which is what we both prefer. It was only around ten minutes walk into the city, so didn't need to use our car which we left parked in one of the designated roads (with a permit helpfully supplied by Mike). The shopping in the city is great, with lots of my favourite clothes shops to hand - it's been a long time since we've seen such a busy bustling high street! Shame the Cathedral was closed for graduation ceremonies all week, as I was looking forward to seeing Jane Austen's burial memorial, but it gives us an excuse to go back! Nothing.
- Joanne (10/5): What a great find! A fantastic cottage in a beautiful city. - We have just come back from a fabulous weekend visit to Winchester and Hang Your Hat was the PERFECT place to stay! The cottage is exceptional. Beautifully clean and well equipped with high end decor and appliances. It’s a very quirky cottage with the most interesting features. The host, Mike (who we met) was extremely helpful and friendly. Communication with Mike was excellent. We were so comfortable in this beautiful cottage that we didn’t want to leave so we hardly saw much of Winchester at all! We would love to return someday and will be highly recommending it to our friends. There is nothing not to like.
- Tabitha (10/5): Exceptional - Beautiful location and a lovely home
- Stephen (10/5): Fantastic Accommodation - Such a cosy and welcoming cottage.
Sympathetically decorated and fantastic facilities.

- Meredith (10/5): Excellent in very way. Will book again -
- Keith (10/5): Exceptional - Very comfortable house, beautifully modernised and full of character. Great location 10 minutes walk from the historic centre and 5 minutes from the station. The private garden and patio were a bonus.
- Susannah (10/5): Exceptional -
- Michael (10/5): Beautiful cottage - A very well decorated and really nice cottage within a 5 minute walk to the centre of Winchester, short walk to the train station, lovely private back garden for a drink of an evening. Nothing
- Ross (10/5): Very homely and comfortable - Bed was very comfortable and everything about it I will say 10/10 if not more. Definitely recommend staying here. Unfortunately the steamer in the shower had an error code, which was out of order for our trip there which is currently getting repaired soon these things happen. But other than that we had a fantastic stay and will definitely come back again.
- Phil (10/5): Exceptional -
- Chrissy (10/5): Exceptional - Great styling and great location Only thing I’d say was needs a king size bed. The double felt a bit small for us as we are used to a king
- Claire (10/5): Beautiful cottage - What a beautiful cottage! The bed was super comfy. The steam room was great to relax in. It's in a great location. The owner had thought of everything we might need. Perfect base for a stay in Winchester Nothing not to like!
- David (10/5): Thoroughly recommend. Mike is the best host we've ever known in a holiday let! - The property is very well equipped and has many interesting features and art works. Parking OK thanks to Mike's help with permit and location
- Ellen (9/5): A nice stay with lovely weather. - The attentiveness of the host, nothing was too much trouble, excellent customer service. Beautiful garden in a great location and very quiet. Lots of extras not normally provided in other places I have stayed, bathrobes, bathroom products etc which were appreciated. Lounge area was a bit dark compared to the bright kitchen which was not a problem as I spent almost all of my time in the lovely kitchen when not in the beautiful garden.
- Mary (10/5): Exceptional -
- Merrilyn (9/5): very comfortable stay with everything you could possibly need. Mike the host made everything easy. - Gorgeously styled with everything you need - delightful rear garden the parking was a little tricky - sometimes hard to find a spot
- Rona (10/5): Exceptional -
- Stephen (10/5): Great stay! - Beautiful cottage only a few minutes from the centre of Winchester,. Very comfortable bed, quality towels, dressing gowns, well equipped kitchen including coffee machine & milk warmer / frother. Eggs & milk a bonus. Great shower / Steam room. Lovely courtyard garden. Nothing!

Lovely that we learned history about the cottage and surrounding area from the information left available. Would like a return visit. Cathedral magical with decor stunning ready for Xmas. Within walking distance to centre of city. Host very helpful and friendly. Bathroom was downstairs which was novel, not especially a problem. Fabulous steam room.
- Christine (10/5): Every detail was considered to make us as comfortable as possible. - Every detail of the cottage was well thought out. The decor was tasteful. The bedding was high quality and the bed comfortable. There could have been more instructions about the steam function in the shower. We had never experienced one before and my partner had a shock when he accidentally activated it.
