Guest Reviews
- David (10/5): Good secure parking for our motorcycles - Clean and tidy
- Michael (7/5): Verypleasant, and excellent location in town centre - Very friendly and helpful staff Access to upper rooms is somewhat tortuous (no lift)
- ANDREW (8/5): - The manager arranged parking for our motorcycle. He warned us about that evenings wedding function but as we were out it didn’t affect us. Slowly got used to the staircases as it is a grade one ancient building and there angle one way then the other way. Didn’t stay for breakfast but I can assume it’s good. Nothing comes to mind
- Bermuda Girl (7/5): A VERY OLD ENGLISH HOTEL - Location and charm of the Very old hotel was good. Room was very small but understandable. Close to supermarket. Staff very nice. It's JUST A VERY VERY OLD HOTEL still with the charm.
- Louise (4/5): It was okay, but it would not be my first choice next time, but I would eat there - It has great history. Bathroom was good. The food was very nice. I didn’t like that There was no help getting my suitcase at the stairs, the bed wasn’t very comfortable. The pigeons were very noisy. I would really have like to have had a mini fridge in there would’ve been happy to have paid additional for that.
- Richard (8/5): -
- CHRIS (9/5): Very clean accommodation, comfy bed and a lovely cosy feel throughout - Very clean accommodation, comfy bed and a lovely cosy feel throughout
- Jayne (8/5): -
- JANE (8/5): Restaurant great - Great restaurant food was lovely.
- Leslie (10/5): - Lovely hotel excellent staff
- deb (10/5): - Lovely hotel.
Ideal location.
Great breakfast.
- Nicholas (8/5): -
- Ian (8/5): Great location friendly helpful staff, breakfast excellent! - Single room quite small. Will book a double next time.
- Roberto (7/5): Ottima posizione in struttura particolare - Struttura accogliente e molto particolare, l’edificio appare sia all’esterno che all’interno “storto”, con delle pendenze e questo lo rende molto caratteristico.
Zona centralissima
- David (9/5): A unique, and delightful place to stay in a great location - This historic Inn is just fantastic, the staff are great, the restaurant and pub are really good (and gluten free options available) . Each room is different and quirky, with leaning walls and old Tudor beams. The place oozes history. Our room was spacious comfy and warm. the location is excellent with free parking very close to the hotel. The hotel is right in the town centre, surrounded by high quality restaurants shops and pubs, so there is a bit of noise as you would expect but it certainly isn't Soho. The breakfast is fantastic, individually cooked to order, none of that bacon on a buffet that's dried out or buffets where people cross contaminate food with utensils, so fantastic for people like me who are Coeliac. You just get the sense that this is a really well run establishment, run and staffed by people who care about the place and its customers. No complaints

- Amanda (6/5): Nice old property in a great location - It’s in the town The bed was uncomfortable and the pillows hard
- Laura (10/5): Perfect - Wonderfull hotel ! Friendly staff and the pub food was amazing ! The beds were comfy and good got shower ! All was perfect - the parking is free but initially couldn’t find the spaces ( it’s within the parking machine area at the back)
- Dawn (9/5): Loved our stay and would definitely stay again - What an amazing building! The staff were all lovely, the room was comfortable and the bed amazing! It was so quiet considering it is a pub too The stairs are uneven, not a criticism as can be expected due to the age of the building!
- Jane (6/5): -
- Astrid (10/5): - The room was clean, spacious and comfortable although there was only one thin pillow each on the bed. The hotel had a very pleasant atmosphere and a wonderful town centre location. All the staff were very friendly. The one thin pillow.
- Tim (10/5): Amazing place. Perfect for what we needed. - A lovely historic place in a great location. So quirky!! Loved it.
- Dewi Gwyn (8/5): -
- Carol (2/5): -
- pamela (8/5): Lovely quirky building, great room - Lovely quirky building. Good sized room, lovely bathroom. all in all the facilities were very satisfactory some of the staff weren't as friendly as the reviews we read led us to believe. Very noisy town. NOT the fault of the Crown but anyone who's a light sleeper might struggle
- Jason (9/5): Loved it - will stay again and try another room - We loved the Elizabethan architecture, beams, small doors and wonky floors etc. Cooked-to-order breakfast was fantastic. Very comfortable bed. Room 6 is smallish (but that can’t be helped I guess). Bathroom tap was loose and a washer needed replacing. Shower and bathroom was really well done, but the water waste pipes glugged for a while, mainly due to the dripping tap above.
- Eileen (10/5): -
- A-M from Limk (8/5): - Warm welcoming perfectly located hotel for us While loving the quirks of a wonderful periid building, the step in the bathroom was a challenge.
- Paul (9/5): -
- STEPHEN (10/5): Fabulous Easter weekend at the Jazz, blues and music festival. - Location, staff, food and atmosphere excellent. All good.
- Paul (9/5): We had a great time. Am happy to recommend. - Very welcoming staff.
Wonderful location, breakfast was spot on.
- John (10/5): Great room in a characterful hotel - For such an old building the rooms were presentable, comfy and spacious. I was disappointed they didn’t have the gluten free options available that the breakfast menu listed.
- Phil (7/5): Central location, great ales, old quirky hotel. - Central location (although see below)
Lovely helpful staff with great bar and atmosphere.
We didn't have breakfast, so cannot comment on food quality. It's a very old hotel with lovely features. We stayed in Room 10 which meant climbing two flights of stairs, one of which was quite narrow and steep - so only for the agile.
The hotel is right in the centre of town but the only downside with this means very noisy at night. It was the Jazz/Blues festival weekend, so busier than usual but we didn't sleep very well for the noise of drunks well into the early hours. Shouting, swearing etc.
- Stefan (10/5): Great location and an overall very comfortable and pleasant stay. - Lovely old building retaining some nice features, nice high ceiling in the room. Glad they stuck to original door sizes and kept the slightly slopped and wonky floors and stairs as it keeps within the character of the building. Very comfortable bed 👍👍
- Helen (10/5): - The friendly staff and great food
- Bedford (7/5): -
- Maria (10/5): One night stay away - The staff were really friendly and welcoming.
The hotel had a lot of charm.
Beautiful, large room that was immaculate. Nothing negative to say, some guests might have to be careful as the building is old and some uneven flooring.
- mary (9/5): -
- Elin (9/5): -
- Ruth (8/5): -
- Paul (9/5): -
- Nigel Curry (8/5): Delightful - Fabulous old building... delightfully creaky
Excellent Staff and Restaurant.
Friendly
Very clean and comfortable indeed
Definitely stay here again. Loved it. The fact the the off duty kitchen staff were F'in and Jeff"in outside our bedroom
However the hotel management addressed this immediately, apologised profusely and action was swift
Turned the whole thing around
- Richard (7/5): -
- Gary (10/5): - Good location, all staff very helpful, evening meal was lovely.Good choice of beer.
- William (5/5): Find somewhere else - Good location and freindly staff This is a vey old, half timber Elizabethan, building and the bedroom floor had a slope it became very disorientating.
- Kelly (9/5): Full of quirky character, spotlessly clean. - Loved the quirky crookedness of the hotel inside and out! Spotlessly clean room, would stay again. Breakfast finished a bit early at 9am, so we went elsewhere.
- edmund (8/5): Relaxing stay - If you like older ,interesting buildings this is for you .The shower/toilet was modern and clean but rooms were in an older style. If you only like chain hotel rooms which are all the same you possibly will not get that but what you will get is a stay where you will experience local life and friendliness. And good local beer!! Nothing at all .
- Holder (5/5): - Central location, dog friendly, Bed horrific, lumpy and hard mattress very very old, rooms need to be refurbished, cleaning staff shouting from 6am and cleaning from am in thw corridor outside our room, noise from near by night club till 4am,
- Mirain (9/5): -
- Carl (9/5): - Five pals stayed for annual meet up. Perfect location, hotel car park, good bar and breakfast. thank you
- David (10/5): A comfortable, historic, excellent place to stay - This is an exceptional hotel, makes such a nice change from chains. An incredible historic building, with a great pub downstairs and a really good restaurant, which does great gluten free choices. You can tell this hotel is run by people who care. Every room is individual and quirky. There is free parking very close to the hotel. It is bang in the town centre, which is beautiful too. The breakfast is exceptionally good, cooked to order, and delicious. nothing to change
- Mike (10/5): Comfortable with everything we needed in our room - Central location in town, friendly helpful staff Nothing, everything was lovely and we had a pleasant stay
- philip (8/5): Great central location, obviously no double glazing so noisy after midnight! - Good breakfast, stairs very steep but in keeping with age of building! Over bath shower precarious for me to use, i'm 74, so only used once!! Steepness of stairs, shower over bath!
- ANDREW (10/5): - Great location. Comfortable and friendly staff
- BexRey (9/5): -
- Janet (9/5): Lovely weekend breat - Great position, friendly staff Nothing
- Barbara (8/5): Very nice, thank you. - Bathroom modern & clean. Nice smelling hair & body wash bottle.
Nice to have a dog friendly room, you could make more of the hotel’s proximity to the river park for dog owners in your publicity.
Excellent town centre location & building heritage. Close free parking space. Bathroom hot water delayed, shower weak. Bedroom window opens onto noisy air con outlet & noisy internal neighbours. TV small.
The bar till is at far back of noisy bar, making it difficult to be heard when shouting an order. No-one on reception when booking out Sun morn.
Breakfast expensive at £15.95, so didn’t bother.
- Pawcasso 's travels (9/5): - Everything Nothing
- GD (5/5): - The restaurant food and staff were excellent, The room was very hot no control on radiators
Very noisy our room was overlooking the main street and could not get a good night's sleep, The room was also a lot smaller than we anticipated,,The cleaning staff done a reasonable job keeping it clean
- April (9/5): Wish we stayed longer - Lovely cosy historic building Small bed in a huge room. Room 5 can easily accommodate a king size bed.
- Jane (10/5): -
- Mary Hirst (8/5): - Staff were very friendly
- Helena (8/5): I LOVE the Crown and would stay again if I could have a less noisy bedroom and dinner experience. - I liked the bed. I liked the TV. I liked the lighting in the bedroom. I LOVED the food and also the delightful staff in the restaurant and bar. I was VERY pleased to meet the owner of the Hotel. I was thrilled to be able to complement her on her LOVELY staff. Sadly I was in a room over the public passage between the main building, the car park behind the Hotel and the shops below my room. I was in the room on a Friday evening and there were some very rowdy people in the passage below my room (due to drink?).
Also while having dinner at the Hotel I was seated next to a HUGE table with 4 screaming children so everyone was having to shout to be heard over their noise. As I have hearing aids the noise from the table was very uncomfortable but if I turned them off I could not communicate with my charming waitresses.
Once a table became available (the people left before I finished Dinner) my waitress very kindly moved me away from the badly behaved table.
Due to the low ceilings there was nowhere for the noise to go but the food was SO delicious I did not want to call time on my dinner!!!
Unfortunately the shower doors are VERY difficult to close completely in Room 4 because there is only one magnet between the doors at the level of the handles that enable you to close the doors. The doors were therefore ajar for about 2 feet below the closing handle which meant the floor got rather wet and it was not very warm. Unfortunately the hot water supply required over 5 minutes for the water to go from stone cold to warm enough to have a shower and give hot water in the sink. This is not a criticism in such an old building but I was sorry to have to use a bath mat that was very wet while I waited outside the shower for the water to get warm enough to get into the shower tray.
- Rowena (8/5): Warm and comfortable. - Notice stated hot water could take 8 minutes to come through.
- anne (8/5): -
- Robson (8/5): -
- Patricia (10/5): Quirky and comfortable - Love its quirky nature and it’s in a great location. Can’t think of anything.
- Karen (7/5): Pleasant but maybe avoid xmas week!!! - Quirky hotel good sized room central location Noisy as Christmas parties on same floor ! Busy bar underneath
- Dena (5/5): It was ok - So quirky and I loved the location I understand the age of the building and this is what I loved, but the bed we were in was not good at all. I’m only 5.2 and my feet touched the bottom, let alone my husband, and the bed creaked every time we moved. I need to stress that it was the bed and definitely not the floor as this was to be expected. If they got a better bed it would be perfect. Also the hot tap was dodgy. I left at 6am as couldn’t stay in it any longer, it was a shame really as was looking forward to the breakfast.
- Dawn (10/5): Quick and easy check in, also check out. Lovey breakfast with excellent service. Very efficient housekeeping, so lovely - It’s absolutely full of character, old and wonky, totally authentic. Exceptional staff, who are efficient and welcoming. Can’t think of anything 😌
- Roger (5/5): Thank goodness only one night - Room 2 too small for comfort. Lumpy mattress and pillows. Room too small for comfort
- Jeremy (7/5): -
- Catherine (10/5): -
- Rick (8/5): totally awesome experience! - Everything, apart from negotiating steep stairs with large suitcases, but you have to expect this in such historic buildings.
the staff, the accommodations, the food and drink and location could not have been much better. only, what is detailed above. (but one must expect this if you want to have accommodation in such historic buildings!
- Colin (7/5): An enjoyable stay. - Unique centuries old building in heart of town. Had private parking. Friendly helpful staff. Floors uneven and various isolated steps. A feature of an old wooden framed building.
- Eileen (10/5): Pleasent - Loved the quirkyness of the hotel The breakfast was not value for money
- Peter (10/5): Fantastic old place with lots of spookeyness, lovely place to stay in the town centre - Lady on the front desk was fantastic, a smile goes a long way to customers It rained all night lol
- Marshall (10/5): - 1585… not a square corner anymore, very exciting!
- Debbie (10/5): -
- Clarke (9/5): -
- Kathinka (5/5): We were fascinated by the building’s history, but found the whole place needed better upkeep. - The history and quirkiness is amasing. The amount of beams and sloping floors is an experience. The staff at the front when we arrived desk was not friendly. And rolled his eyes when we didn’t accept the room he showed us as that was not the one we booked. Also there are no plug sockets next to the bed. Only one on the other side of the room. The ‘upgrading’ they do in the room with making tables out of scaffolding pipes is so out of character with the building. It’s easy enough to find old fashioned/antique little tables and cabinets.
- Walsh (8/5): Lovely character at this hotel comfortable and very nice staff - Very nicely cooked Nothing to change
- PLFree (9/5): -
- Donna (10/5): Stay here every yaer to celebrate our mums birthday. - Everything, so welcoming and cosy , staff are so friendly and helpful, food is amazing. Nothing
- Mike (10/5): -
- Caroline (10/5): Such a fun night staying in a place where there was so much history! - Loved the history and quirkiness of the venue.
Really liked the staff, very personable - especially Susan (legend)
- Adrian (10/5): -
- Peter (9/5): Warm old and spooky - Room was perfect for me, the only thing that let it down was a dead pigeon skellington hanging outside the window The old building
- deb (10/5): -
- Graham (10/5): Great Historic Hotel - Great Central location, very historic hotel. Potential 8 minutes to get hot water for a shower, room 4.
- Barrett (10/5): Exceptional, amazing pre Christmas break. Atmosphere was very festive and hotel was stunning - Breakfast was delicious, fresh and so tasty We booked a room with bath off of the picture online but no bath! It had been refurbished and was gorgeous but as no bath on our house was looking forward to one.
- Lorena (10/5): -
- Kevin (10/5): -
- Parsons (4/5): -
- Cathy (10/5): - It was a friendly hotel & pub with good food & a quirky old building full of history in a place full of history. Whats not to like? Nothing
- andrew (9/5): - The bedroom only had a velux window with no blind but would have preferred a window you can look out of.
- joanna (6/5): Convenient comfortable - Central clean comfortable No water in the room
- David (9/5): Excellent, historic, Christmassy, great restaurant, pub and friendly. - This is the most Christmassy hotel I know, fascinating old building from Elizabethan times, means no room, is the same, no floor is level, no wall is straight, I love it. The room was comfy, and warm, The loaction is right in the middle of the town, Parking is free and easy. Great pub downstairs with gluten free draught beer, excellent restaurant, with lots of GF options. One of the best hotels I know, original , old, and friendly Nothing to improve
- john (8/5): - Location in the town Parking public car park no information if you get money back or it's free
