Guest Reviews
- Gregory (10/5): Awanoyu was a great way to see the natural beauty of Japan and enjoy the height of its hospitality! - both the dinner and breakfast were excellent!
- Benno (9/5): Relaxing & delicious stay in Ryokan with very friendly staff. - - perfect milky onsen /
- Arpiwach (10/5): -
- Francis (3/5): Very run down and very overpriced, probably at its best in the 1970s. - The food was quite good and the outdoor onsen is good This place is very run down and very over priced. We stayed in six other hotels with onsens before visiting Awanoyu and found it very disappointing. Time for a refit I think.
- Pijus (5/5): - Most of the staff were very nice. The room itself was spacious and clean. Really did not enjoy the food - perhaps the traditional Japanese kitchen is not for the European taste buds, but it also didn't feel fresh or high quality. The onsen feels quite worn down, and the smell is really strong - be prepared for it. When we were checking out and walking out of the door at 10:03, the reception called our room and said "check out time is over, hurry" in quite a rude tone. Did not feel great. Not worth the money in general.
- Freya (10/5): -
- Redouane (10/5): -
- Harjeet (7/5): Pleasant but not that memorable - Nice outdoor mixed onsen pool.
Staff were friendly.
Food was good. Felt dated and a little grubby
No good views of the mountains unfortunately as in the valley.
- Helmut (10/5): - Sehr freundliches Personal. Onsen ist ausgezeichnet. Essen ebenso.
- Papaphorn (10/5): Excellent stay with great food, relaxing onsen, and beautiful snowy scenery. - The Japanese-style room was wonderful. The futon and pillows were very comfortable. The room was clean and well-equipped. The food was delicious, and the service was excellent. The onsen water temperature was just perfect, and the outdoor shared bath was beautiful. I visited during light snowfall, and the view was absolutely stunning. It was worth every penny. It’s a bit far to travel, but it’s definitely worth the effort.
- Tom (9/5): -
- Frederic (9/5): - Very quiet, meal and onsen are amazing
- Humberto (10/5): Amazing location off the beaten path - Amazing location and staff. This is a cold onsen so don’t expect boiling hot water, it is just pleasant enough so that you are not cold. Not too big or crowded, which was a big plus. Food was amazing and staff was very welcoming. Definitely coming back in different seasons.
The kotatsu in the rooms was a very nice experience as well. Location is pretty difficult to access in winter, given that it is in the middle of nowhere, with the only access being a narrow and winding mountain road that was half covered in ice. Recommended a 4WD car and tyre chains otherwise you might not be able to go up the mountain or will slip when coming down the mountain and end up in the river.
Be aware that many (if not most) of the locations to rent cars in the area of nagano and matsumoto do not have tyre chains available, which might be a deal breaker to get to this ryokan in the winter.
There is also nothing to do around here, so if you are coming, expect to spend all your time within the Ryokan.
- Eric (9/5): -
- Mamahit (10/5): Perfect Ryokan with open air bath in the mountains - The open air bath was the highlight and the food was excellent The location is very remote and limited means of transportation to get there
- kritsada (10/5): -
Gemischte Aussenbäder findet man selten, daher auch was Besonderes. Insgesamt ein perfektes Aufenthalt. Unbedingt zu empfehlen. Service, Freundlichkeit - Wirklich sehr sehr gut !
- Erik (10/5): - Amazing hot springs both indoor and outdoor. Wonderful staffs and services. Very welcoming We enjoyed our stay and definitely would like to come back.
- yang (7/5): -
- Kazuko (9/5): -
- John Michael (8/5): Incredible beautiful location and onsen for classic ryokan escape. A little dated building. - The property is incredibly beautiful and in amazing location in the mountains. The Onsen/baths are incredible and the best part of the experience. The water is amazing and being surrounded by nature and trees is very relaxing. The hotel building is very old and could stand to be removed just in terms of the main hallway carpets, etc. I understand the classic aesthetic they are going for but some upgrades here and there could be nice.
- raquel (8/5): - The outside onsen is very nice. For those that don’t like very hot water, this is a good opportunity to experience a ryokan with great kaiseki meals, and a mild temperature rotemburo. Also, if you go with a partner, you can enjoy the big onsen with your partner, since it is mixed gender ( bathing “towel-suit” provided in the dressing room).
The staff was very proactive about communicating regarding road conditions, which was very helpful. All was good!
If booking this place from abroad, take into account that around the end of November there may already be snow or ice on the road leading to the hotel, so better to rent a 4-wheel drive car with winter tires.
- Barak (10/5): -
- Erin (10/5): -
- Andy (10/5): -
- MB (10/5): -
Rien
- Tatiyana (9/5): - Everything! Big room, traditional experience, very friendly staff
- Susan (1/5): After a month in Japan this was our biggest disappointment. - Nothing much. The staff did their best to be helpful. Food was a Japanese feast but sadly much of it did not appeal to us. The premises were outdated in desperate need of maintenance and upgrading. Furniture from the 1970's. Reception area was freezing cold. Common areas had only gas heaters.
- mark (6/5): Remote, really authentic highly enjoyable stay in a slightly tired but delightful Ryokan. - Remoteness in the mountains was delightful as was the Onson, which really was special, if a little tired as was the whole place. However the bedrooms were spacious and airy. That is not to say we didn’t enjoy staying; I think it was spectacularly unusual. The outside looked run down, the onson was a delight but probably in need of some financial support.
- Kunanya (10/5): -
- Erika (10/5): A true traditional ryokan experience. - Beautiful onsen, friendly staff, beautiful scenery, delicious food. A real traditional ryokan/onsen experience This is more to do with my own disorganisation, as the property is not the easiest to get to. But as long as your organised about transport, it should be fine.
- frederic (7/5): -
- Emma (9/5): -
- Christian (10/5): Excellent as expected. We had a great time staying here. - Location. Amenities. Food. Specially the staffs. Everyone is above and beyond service. Will definitely comeback soon. None
- Victoria (9/5): -
- Anne (1/5): - Le repas Hotel vieux et décrépi
- Hsia Ning (9/5): - Everything except the onsen changing room should include toiletries
- Tatsuya (10/5): -
- Malte (8/5): -
- skindoc (7/5): Posto incantevole con qualche piccolo difetto. - Struttura con uno stile dei tempi passati. Acque sulfuree lattiginose incredibili.
- KIMIKO (9/5): -
- Aydan (8/5): -
- Aadith Kumar (10/5): -
- Pavel (10/5): - Excellent service and a great onsen in a beautiful location. Highly recommended.
- HIKARI (8/5): -
- Tsz Ho (9/5): A great experience, if you are visiting Kamikochi, I highly recommend adding it to your itinerary - We’ve had a few less than ideal experiences for traditional Japanese hot spring inns in the past, but this time was completely satisfying
It’s wonderful, far from the hustle and bustle, the room is very clean, with extremely professional and friendly staff
The food is delicious
The hot spring is unique, a very special experience The hot spring temperature is indeed a bit low, but it’s understandable
Recommended to warm up in the indoor pool
- Michael (8/5): Good accommodation with access to the famous Awanoyu baths - Good accommodation, slowly getting old. Great added value through the famous onsen. Perfectly clean and comfortable japanese style room. Good ryokan meal and breakfast.
- Maria (10/5): Excellent stay! - Everything!
Awanoyu’s team welcomed us warmly, the Japanese style room was clean and very nicely arranged, the dinner was absolutely delicious and the onsen was just perfect. We should have stayed longer…
- Eng (7/5): Relaxing stay in a serene ryokan - The outdoor onsen was good but the water was lukewarm. I would have preferred hotter temperatures. The food was very good Abit overpriced
- Sophie (10/5): We absolutely loved our stay at Awanoyu. It was an incredible experience—from the amazing milky waters of the onsen to t -
- Nopphamassiri (7/5): Outdoor Onsen not nice as show. Disappointed. - staff nice good service booked the hotel because expected onsen but very disappointed not clean enough and the water not hot. So the price of the rooms so expensive.
- Vivienne (6/5): Pleasant -
- Rohit (9/5): Lovely experience in a unique onsen - For international travellers they should have English speakers; they did not have any. There were no options for vegetarians. They should have some options
- Joost (9/5): Beautiful location, with beautiful outside onsen. But a tiny bit too cold. - The place is located in a super nice forest, where we saw the snow stacked on the side of the road (half a meter high, at the end of march). This gave off very nice vibes. The personnel treat you very well, even picking up after your shoes (which we found particularly awkward, as we were not used to this). The included dinner was about 9 authentic Japanese courses. The breakfast was also very extensive. We definitely couldn't finish it all. The room was very large and looked very good. The Onsen baths were a little too cold for us, especially outside in the beautiful nature. Between 35-37 degrees Celsius I'm guessing. Which was still nice to be in, but not the real hot spring experience for us. The tatami beds were quire thin, we were definitely touching the ground. The location is a little hard to get to, but it is worth the drive to get to the beautiful mountain forest.
- Angela (10/5): Unforgettable outdoor onsen in the snow - The outdoor pool was incredible, our room was very large for the three of us and had all the right and authentic amenities. We had a lot of snowfall so we experienced the outdoor pool with snow falling. The dinner and breakfast were very traditional. We were helped by Otsuka who was amazing checking us in and explaining the procedure to access the onsen and then how to eat our traditional dinner and breakfast, we thought he provided a very high standard of service, arigato Otsuka and Awanoyu It was a trek to get there and we weren’t sure if we going to make it. Awanoyu had to send their own bus to meet the Alpico bus half-way along the route as the Alpico bus couldn’t go through the snow. We had snow in Matsumoto as our departure point to get to Awanoyu and apparently that is unusual so everything seemed a bit uncertain about the travel to get there, but it did all work in the end.
- Wei (9/5): Superb -
- Valérie (10/5): - Simplement magique et totalement dépaysant
- Hiromi (10/5): - We are the repeaters. This the rare co-ed onsen which allows you to go in with your friends and family. The onsen was filled with milky warm water so that you can stay in long hours and enjoy other people's company. Very relaxing environment surrounded by mountains. The food was omakase and very good. We enjoyed all of the local cuisine items with great beer and sake.
- Prasertsak (7/5): Outdoor onsen close to kamikochi - Close to kamikochi / outdoor onsen A bit old, staff reception cannot communicate eng well, outdoor onsen have mix male and female
- lindsey (6/5): - Happy we tried the ryokan, definitely an experience to do in Japan. The property is pretty dated, and the staff watches your every movement which feels weird. But glad we did it. I think it was overpriced for the age of the facility.
- James (10/5): Exceptional -
- Kyosuke (10/5): - good
- Kin (10/5): The legendary onsen is worth the visit. The sumptuous kaiseki dinner and breakfast make the stay very much worth the val -
- Mehdi (10/5): Exceptional -
- Laura (8/5): Very good -
- Chanpaiboonrat (9/5): Superb -
- Natalie (10/5): WORTH THE DRIVE ! - The onsen was beyond expectations! It was warm and relaxing. It was a bit uncomfortable to be around so many naked people, but no one really looks at you. Women can use a "bathing robe" that they provide, which I did and was tremendously helpful in making me more comfortable. Guys have to be nude though. The dinner and breakfast were soooo good! Def worth the money! Everything was perfect. It's very rural and old time'y so don't expect any fanciness. We loved it
- Lucilla (9/5): Stunning onsen - highlight of our Japan trip - The hotel is beautifully locates in the Japanese Alps and the onsen facilities are stunning. A very characteristic and enjoyable experience. The hotel service and staff are impeccable and the meals were delicious. Highlight of our trip in Japan. The building itself is a little tired and could do with a renovation, but charming nonetheless. Getting to the hotel is not easy either, needs a little planning ahead.
- Anna (9/5): Superb - We had a great stay here, it was really unique. It was certainly expensive but it felt very authentic and was a one in a kind experience. The hotel is a little old but thats part of the charm, it was perfectly clean. Baths were wonderful and the multi course dinner and breakfast was wonderful! I loved sleeping in one room with the family in the cosy beds they made up for us. It was a real highlight of the trip. Warning: be careful to check the roads before you set off - you may need to allow extra time to get there if a road is shut like it was for us - you also want to drive up those mountain roads slowly!
- Linda (10/5): Serene setting, sulfur hot springs with several options, lovely 2.5 mile walk from the ryokan overlooking nearby forests - We loved the remoteness of this hotel…we had already been to Kyoto,Kanazawa, and Takayama. This was our last destination before heading home, and we wanted to just relax, take leisurely walks and soak in the sulfur hot springs. Also, be treated to kaiseki dining, which were elaborate and tasty.
We loved the kotatsu (heated table with a blanket draped to keep your legs and lower body warm. And the kotatsu was located in the bay window facing a snow covered woods: so serene.
We specifically want to commend Otsuka-san and Ogama-as for serving us breakfasts and dinners with a high degree of professionalism and kindness. Also, deep appreciation to Tajima-san at the reception desk for providing a typewritten page of directions for my husband and me, in reaching our next destination. It was complicated, requiring 6 different transfers. But his step by step directions plus a map of the train station showing us how to get to the next train, were so helpful.
On our last day, the ryokan provided a private van for three couples (us included) because the local bus couldn’t pass the road due to a landslide. That’s service!
- Sze Chun Wilson (8/5): - Awanoyu is among one of those onsen ryokans we love the traditional ambience. Its open air spa is exceptional in the natural serenade!!
- Kaiho (10/5): Best service - Everything Nothing
