Guest Reviews
- sara (4/5): Gnarly stay and an odd vibe - Nice location, overlooking the river and next to the jungle. This was very expensive for what it offered and compared to other properties in the area. The mosquito net didn’t cover the bed properly so we woke to a very large moth by our pillow. Being near the jungle, it would have been useful for this to have been considered. The restaurant staff were also quite strange and unapproachable, which we thought was odd given that all of our other experiences in Indonesia were exceptional.

- Charmaine (10/5): FIBI you won’t regret it - Everything Nothing
- Charmaine (10/5): - Beautiful surrounding
Excellent friendly helpful staff
Clean
Warm shower
Soft beds
Good food All was good, be nice if there were some hammocks to lay in in the grounds
- Regina (9/5): - Toller Service und freundliches Personal
- M (6/5): - no soap
Special thanks to Rendy!
- Andrea (10/5): -
- Clifford Roy (10/5): Stunning location and at one with the jungle. - Location, total eco and sustainable ethos.
Modern facilities in a sympathetic style with architecture which felt at one with the forest environment
Staff always welcoming, helpful and friendly.
We felt at peace. Could not fault.

- YWNBF (6/5): Beautiful place but bland food & not so hospitable - Beautiful location, nice rooms, and a lovely restaurant. It's a shame the food is quite bland, very bland—perhaps intended to please Western tourists, but a real shame. We've eaten well everywhere in Sumatra except here. Even sambal doesn't help. For breakfast, you have to choose. If you choose the pancake, you get one thin pancake with a small amount of sauce supposed to be chocolate spread. Far too little. If you want more, you have to pay extra. "Mixed vegetables" as part of a dish is what we would call a garnish. If you ask for anything more than that, you have to pay extra. You have to pay after every meal anyway—you can't have it charged to your room. Not very hospitable and doesn't fit with their overall image.
- Adrian (10/5): Great location & Value for money - The accommodation is set in the forest across the rope bridge close to a transport hub and local shops, cafes where u can buy snack and drinks were u are supporting the local community.
The room was clean and well presented the shower had tepid water which is exactly what is required.
Mosquito net proved over the bed.
The restaurant venue is hi completely constructed with bamboo it is open and airy with a lovely view of the river it also has a great food menu and bar with good service, the Wi-Fi in this area is very good, there is no Wi-Fi in the rooms which we enjoyed :-)
Breakfast was nice and plenty of coffee.
It’s only a 20m walk down to the river for a lovely swim.
We did a single day’s trek in to jungle booked through the hotel after arrival. We walking from the lodge, we saw 5 Orangutans and the Alpha Male plus another 3 different type’s of monkeys all this was in the first few hours, the lunch was nice fruit and rice our guide was Aldo who was young but very professional ( highly recommend) he was smartly dressed fully equipped with a first aid kit ( leeches) and also spoke English it was a pleasure to be in his company.
We really enjoyed our stay of 3 nights thanks to all the staff
We were also there over the weekend no karaoke from across the river No negative points as this venue is extremely great value for money :-)
- Mark (9/5): A great place to stay to enjoy the experiences Bukit Lawang has to offer - The property is in an excellent location backing onto the National Park and a starting point for trekking tours. The grounds have lots of wildlife and are well maintained. The staff were very accommodating and two of the reception staff (Nuri and Bayu) went out of their way to make our stay enjoyable. The restaurant was always very busy but I felt the food generally lacked flavour and was not near as nice as the food available in nearby restaurants. It would also be nice to have wifi available in the rooms.
- Sercelj (10/5): unforgettable stay - We had an unforgettable stay at the EcoLodge! The accommodation and our room were really lovely. Our absolute highlight was the bamboo house with the restaurant and chill-out area. The staff were super helpful and friendly. We also loved the sustainability concept of the EcoLodge together with the EcoFarm. The village tour and jungle trekking we booked through them were amazing experiences as well. We’d definitely come back anytime!

- liner953 (4/5): I'm never staying here again! - Don't stay here if you can avoid it! There is so much wrong with this place. First and foremost, two of us got food poisoning from their chicken satays. Our driver told us later that just a day earlier he had had to take another family to the hospital because they got food poisoning at this place as well.
Secondly, if you stay there during the weekend, expect loud thumping karaoke music from the other side of the river. It was like sleeping in the middle of a night club and it went on till 2am. I understand that this is not directly the fault of Eco Lodge but this is a warning that this is not a quiet peaceful place where you get a good night's sleep.
On top of the food poisoning, the restaurant in generel is a bit crap. The service is slow and the staff seem disinterested and stand-off-ish. The food is meh and the breakfast is a joke. For the complimentary breakfast you get to choose one of several different options, none of which are substantial enough. The pancake option is one (1) pancake.
The rooms vary in quality. None have AC and given that this place strives for sustainability that's okay, but the fans that replace the AC are old and worthless so nights are insanely hot.
Our first room only had a cold water shower. The second room, after we returned from our jungle trek, did have hot water and seemed newer or more recently renovated than the first room, but none of the windows had glass, only wooden slats, which means that there is no sound proofing at all and you can hear everything that goes on in the corridor and on the stairs outside.
The only reason I'm giving this place two stars is because they were kind at the reception when we were sick and let us stay an hour past check out time while we waited for our driver to pick us up. I'm never staying there again.

- madsjakobvadk (10/5): Magical experience - We spent one night at the Exo Lodge before going jungle trecking. The place was super nice and very much in pact with nature. You can just tell these friendly people care about the place and take the stewardship of the areas heritage and richness seriously. The rooms were simple but clean and nice.
The jungle treck with Randy and Antor was an incredible experience - something we will never forgot. Saw 7 orangutangs and a bunch of other monkeys before reaching the camp site and getting a refreshing swim in the river surrounded by the breathtaking jungle. Everything was above and beyond, and the helpfulness of the guides truly amazing.
I could not recommend this place and the experience enough. You will not regret and never forget it.
- Jose (10/5): Great resort between river and jungle - Great facilities (beautiful resort next to the river with a great lounge). Excellent restaurant. Lower level not excessively private (hard to get natural light without opening the front door). Upper level was perfect.
- Mason (9/5): Superb - Was amazing spot above the river and below the mountains. They organised the tour for us and the orangtuan trekking was totally worth it. Food was high quality and super cheap. Room was comfy, fan did the job keeping us cool.
- Satsheel (7/5): Good - Great location and a lovely hotel but no AC and no hot water.
- Anonymous (10/5): The hikes were amazing with amazing guides. - The water in room to be warm and better shower pressure(had the jungle bathroom)
- Marc (9/5): Best Tour offerings in Bukit Lawang - I really enjoyed my stay at Ecolodge Bukit Lawang. It’s on the pricier side, but perfectly situated and they offer some of the best tours to Gunung Leuser in town. Extraordinarily helpful staff. I can recommend Havidz as a guide (did the 2D1N tour with him).
- Mulyadi (10/5): - Friendly staff, location and green environment
- Penny (9/5): Superb -
- El (8/5): Great place to land, and beautiful design of the cafe and top floor! - A lovely space with a unique style, clean and simple for the stay, breakfast here was simple and good quality. The staff were very professional, thank you. We could have done with more advice or pointers for making plans and getting around Bukit Lawang.
- David (10/5): The best place for Orangutans - This lodge was really great! It’s right on the river and close to the jungle and bat cave.
They use the money they earn at the lodge to support Orangutan Haven, a rehabilitation center for injured and abused orangutans.
- Nilla69 (4/5): Beware of very loud music - Staff was really nice and friendly, but stay was not enjoyable due to very loud, thumping bass music for the entirety of two of our nights and days there.
Room was sparse, but functional. No furniture on the balcony, maybe because of the monkeys? One seemed to contemplate going in our room.
Luckily not really any mozzies, as netting didn't close as all and room is open to outside.
Food was decent- we did have some stomach issues, but that could be from the river as well 😉
- 158abit (6/5): Great location and communal facilities. Rooms need updating - I stayed for a few nights whilst doing jungle treks and the staff were lovely and so helpful. The restaurant and breakfast area is beautiful and really great views of the river.
I think some of the rooms are newer but the room is was put in was quite outdated. The mesh netting round the windows to keep bugs out was broken, the mosquito net had so many holes in it did not do its job, the bathrooms are very very basic. There was one fan and no air con or outside clothes drying facilities so it is impossible to dry and clothes you get wet from being in the jungle/river.
You can also hear all the noise from the village clearly in the rooms. At the weekend there is a lot of karaoke which goes on until the early hours and can be heard very loudly in the rooms.
- Trevor (9/5): Good stay - Excellent location very good staff, clean rooms. Ideal for jungle trekking to see the Orang utangs.
- Micha (7/5): Reasonable hotel for starting your Orang Utang trek - The hotel is a moderate sized tourist hotel conveniently situated for wilderness trekking. The architecture of the restaurant is amazing. Hotel staff was businesslike, but never really attentive. The restaurant has a choice of Indonesian and European food. The Indonesian food is very much adapted to western taste. Many people smoke in the restaurant which makes it hard to enjoy for non smokers. The toilet in the restaurant was dirty. No towels supplied. The room we had was dark, had no air conditioning and only protection against mosquitos around the bed. Toilet paper was not sufficiently supplied and we had to ask for more at the reception.
- Farzan (10/5): Exceptional - Great location in the jungle. It has all basic requirements. very clean and functional. Garden stones and steps are very dangerous. I twisted my foot very badly on it.
- Johan (8/5): Very good - Beatiful place. Everywhere around you is jungle.
The dominant of the hotel is amazing big restaurant. Very beatiful architecture job.
Rooms are clean.
Staff are very kind, helpful, and friendly.
Resort is big, and very nice. Normally you can meet small monkeys there.
Beds are big and comfortable, with mosquito net.
Food in restaurant was delicious. In the room we havent got hot water. Not because some problem. But there isnt any kind of source of hot water. For someone can be, uncomfortable.
- Jo (7/5): Very relaxing location at the entity to the jungle. - Breakfast was lovely. The location great. The room was very basic with a cold water shower. We were offered an upgrade but we liked the outdoor bathroom. Room was basic and pur towels weren't changed nor bin emptied regularly.
- Pien (10/5): Exceptional -
- BPhilips (4/5): Focus on money and not service - Booked 2 nights through Agoda - 2 rooms family of 4. Received messages insisting I transfer the full amount in advance to confirm booking. Also insisted activities had to be booked in advance. We had to sent transfer receipt. Charged Euro 70 per person (Euro 280 for family) for a 1 day trek to see orang utan. Insisted this is as per Indonesian Regulation for foreigners. We live in Indonesia. Regulation is IDR 150,000 per person to enter the forest. Also found the Agoda booking was cancelled!
- Isaak (10/5): Exceptional - great place
- Omar (10/5): - I stayed here with my son for an opportunity to visit the jungle and see the wildlife. Amazing hotel, beautiful architecture, lovely rooms, incredible location. Very friendly and helpful staff. Fantastic nature tours with knowledgeable and chatty guides.A great experience.
- Sylvia (10/5): Great place to relax - the staffs are great. they are very helpful. the location is great if you like nature. there is no aircon in the room, but we sleep comfortably. don't forget the insect repellant. it's nature after all. you can't avoid insects especially moquitoes. There are too many monkeys in the area. we need to be careful with our things in the room.never leave the window open.
- Cornelia (8/5): Overall, it was a great stay which I can recommend to anybody who wants to experience the jungle - The location is excellent, if you are interested in jungle walks with possible sightings of orangutans. The manager, Bobi arranged for a car to collect me at the airport and kept in touch with me prior to my arrival.
It was easy to walk around the property and also in the immediate neighbourhood. The staff offered to arrange a variety of activities and excursions, which I made use of. I went on a tuc-tuc tour of the surrounding villages, visiting a number of home industries. I even got to try out some of these activities myself. My guide Aris accommodated me on the jungle walk and even came to fetch me the next day when orangutans were seen close by. He ensured that I did see these magnificent animals in the wild.
The food was great with a good variety to choose from. Friendly and helpful staff. Unfortunately, wifi was only available on the large deck and not in my room. The view from my room was marred by an untidy garden with rubbish lying around next to a run-down building.
Since I was a solo traveller, I had to pay for two persons in order to do the jungle walk. That made it quite expensive.
- Collis (6/5): Pleasant - The location, the structure of the reception/dining room. Friendly staff. Nice bedroom. The bathroom facilities. Sink had a trickle of water that leaked out straight under the sink. Shower was barely a trickle. However, the leak under sink was soon fixed but the tap was still only providing a trickle of water. Shower was fixed to provide half of the showerhead having water coming out of it, which was workable.
Overall I'd say it's good value for money, only £24 a night and I really liked the bedroom. Watching the antics of the monkeys jumping on and off my roof from the trees is very entertaining.
- Collis (6/5): Pleasant - The location, the main building, the staff, my room, the ambience Toilet facilities not so good, sink tap just a trickle of water, so I used that tap on wall as it had good water supply.
Shower was also a trickle, but they fixed it immediately so half the water came out, which was ok.
- Dan (5/5): Passable - Nice staff, restaurant was okay, good location No AC, open slats to outside, was given a sub standard room
- Marie (10/5): Exceptional -
- Marine (10/5): Exceptional -
- MJRIR7374 (10/5): Highly recommended - 10 out of 10 - We have just spent the most amazing few days in Bukit Lawang. Everyone associated with the ecolodge - from staff to guides to drivers - has been amazing. The two-day trek to see orang-utans was a wonderful experience that we will all (including our daughters aged 13 and 11) remember for the rest of our lives. We would highly recommend the ecolodge and associated tours - for the service, the experience and the fact that we have been able to support the amazing work the team is doing to protect the wildlife and local environment.
- 612lenim (8/5): Perfect for your jungle trekking - Very cool retreat located directly on the south side of the river with awesome views of Bukit Lawang. The rooms are cozy and blend in well with the surrounding environment and the food at the restaurant is yummy. Sometimes there can be a bit of noise from adjacent hotels.
- Wendy (9/5): Wonderful time near the jungle! - The location is perfect, especially if you plan to do some jungle trekking to see orang utans. Staff was very friendly and helpful. The manager, Bobi Chandra was especially responsive in helping with transportation needs. The restaurant is very comfortable and the food delicious. We had 3 units. One of which has been renovated and the other two have not and the fans were dusty and not working at capacity.
- Amerrild (10/5): Great place for Orang Utan. - Great staff and great food. The Gunung Leuser nationalpark litteraly starts at the back of the hotel. They can arrange tours from 3 hours to several days.
Rooms are clean and well maintained. Close to the town for shopping, but not much to be found.
Saw 15 Orang Utans in 3 days.
- 313antoniaj (6/5): Clean, good location - but didn’t feel welcome. - The accommodation itself is great! Clean, comfy, spacious and perfect location (directly next to the entrance of the Nationalpark). Food in the restaurant was great too.
Unfortunately, most of staff isn’t that friendly, we didn’t feel very welcome. They barely smile and therefore make every question seem as too much. That also counts for the waiters at the restaurant, especially the cashier(s) who differ the prices from day to day - without reasoning.
Not sure if i would come back:(
- Brian (7/5): A very good experience, great location by the river and the forest, convenient for meeting people. - Food was good. Liked the mosquito nets but there were mosquitos inside.
It was good to leave our bags in reception while trekking and camping in the forest.
The bamboo design of the building was great.
Staff were friendly and very helpful. Mosquitos inside the netting in the bedroom.
The shower room to clean up after returning from trekking and camping was not a high standard and in disrepair.
- christianstoffelen (10/5): Ecolodge bukit lang good stay and good guide Sutris - Very pleasant, nice, lovely, quit stay. In nature bit remote but still in neighbourhood of small village, possible to "swim" in low river. Nice forest for Jungle Trekking and Oerang Oetangs. Rooms clean, nice, with balcony. Lovely bridge over the river to arrive there. Friendly personeel, good food, included breakfast also nice and good. And also lots of things to do.
- SimonF-JeniP (8/5): You could not get better access to the jungle! - This deserves 4.5 to be honest! Stayed 2 nights for our hike into the rain forest. Perfect location - very warm welcome from Heru - prepping us for our excursions. Monkeys around the grounds were great fun to watch, even if the staff were frustrated by them. The room is very simple, but then it is an eco lodge. We had hot water and electricity and ate well in the restaurant on site. There were other places to eat nearby but the staff provided everything we needed at the Lodge. The cold drinks after our hike were so welcome! My only niggle was that the room could have done with somewhere to unpack and sort/dry some of our kit, but this and the lack of air-conditioning didn't stop us getting a great night's sleep.
- Jason (8/5): Very good -
- Roving33327410597 (10/5): Yoga retreat at Eco Lodge, Bukit Lawang. - Just spent 6 days in Bukit Lawang at the Eco Lodge, on a yoga retreat. The rooms at the Eco Lodge were excellent, with a view of the river, and groups of monkeys visiting in the trees nearby. The staff at the lodge were fantastic, very friendly and helpful. We trekked into the jungle after yoga on most days and our guides Idriss and Jampo were amazing. They were thoughtful, friendly and dedicated to ensuring that we had the best experience. The experience was so fantastic, that we will be returning next year!
- Susanne (10/5): Wonderful stay in the jungle - top design of the restaurant, chillout zone, location, staff, jungletour with a guide, the food nothing
- Simmons (10/5): Exceptional - I stayed in a recently renovated room with beautiful views of the river! The restaurant attached has such a cool ambiance - a great place to read or study. The food was delicious and reasonably priced. Rooms were very clean and neat and an easy walk towards the forest or shops nearby!
- Sonja (10/5): Exceptional - Super nice, calm and cozy place! Everybody was so friendly and helpful. I had a great time at Ecolodge Bukit Lawang and recommend it to everyone. -
- Angie (8/5): Trip to Bukit Lawang - I loved the lobby, the sitting room above the lobby, the restaurant was great! All the staff was wonderful too.
The trekking was awesome, and the location of the hotel was great for trekking. The rooms were so hot and we had a hard time sleeping. The lobby and upstairs were hot too. The shower was not usable. Only a tiny amount of water came out.
Rooms need to have A/C because it was miserable.
The lobby and upstairs could benefit with some ceiling fans.
- Elena (9/5): Loved the place - Great location staff super friendly. Great to have facility for storing luggage for overnight jungle trek and availability of shower after adventure. Very satisfied all round.
- Weedee (9/5): Superb -
- Weedee (9/5): Superb -
- Ezz-el-din (10/5): Best place to enjoy your stay in bukit lawang - Everything .he best view directly on the river. Very comfortable room, very clean and bug free although very close to the jungle. Restaurant offered amazing food at fair prices. Staff Response and help was exceptionally good. Definately recommend it Couldnt find anything bad. Even conplaints in other comments about cold water in the shower are not true. We had warm water too
- Matthew (1/5): Room looks due for demolition - The location is beautiful and the restaurant and lounge area are also in a beautiful location. The room that I stayed in was the worst room I've stayed in, in my entire life
- Ivan (10/5): Really good stay - Great place to stay in Bukit Lawang. Well located and with all the services you need: trekking, restaurant, etc.
- Andika (3/5): Poor -
- Nathan (10/5): Exceptional -
- Tom (3/5): disappointing, crazy loud karaoke, not a quiet place at all - rooms are ok.
restaurant is good. Horrendous karaoke in the surrounding area and even in the hotel itself. In the hotel they stopped around midnight even though they said it was only going to be till 10pm.
Across the river they didn’t stop until 2 in the morning. They stopped because I went out to ask if they could finally please stop the music. No one from the staff in the Ecolodge seemed to care.
The next day they started singing again at 6:30 in the morning. When I asked reception if they could maybe kindly ask if they could stop it they just laughed in my face. I guess they tried to do that before? Or maybe not? Again I went alone to see if they could stop the music and they actually did. Asking was free and apparently a foreign tourist has a bigger impact than the hotel staff who actually lives there and speaks the language.
A lot of apologies from reception later (which we accepted) we - stupid us - booked this place again for after our jungle trekking. It was first of all easier to leave our luggage, but second of all the hotel staff said it was not going to happen again cause that only happens on the weekend… They lied cause when we got back it was even worse. Karaoke till 2 in the morning and no one that cared to stop it.
As a travel agent and hotel owner myself I take this very serious and I am very good at giving good reviews, please check all of them, but here I simply cannot give a good one. I would have just left it if they would not have lied about it, because then we would have simply booked a different place. Unfortunately they did.
I was even planning on bringing my Belgian and Dutch guests here in summer but now I am so glad I found a better place for this.
I complained of course the final night again and asked for a refund. I had to send multiple WhatsApp messages and now, one and a half months later I finally got a reply.
People deserve to know that The Ecolodge is not a place for quietness and rest, quite the opposite. If you come for nature go more north next to the river.
- Rick (8/5): Very good -
- Dillon (10/5): Great stay beautiful area very clean - This place is amazing - stayed here before and after jungle trek. Very beautiful view of river and food was so good and affordable, we never wanted to go off site to eat anywhere else. Wish we couldve stayed longer. Power goes out time to time but never more than 2 mins, all part of the area. So beautiful and relaxing and lots of monkeys around. Wifi only in lounge/restaurant
- Mariano (10/5): Beautiful place and kind staff - The location is perfect! Near the city center and the lauser National Park We haven’t wifi in the room

- Alayna (10/5): - Lovely place! Super clean and comfortable with really nice common spaces. Food was okay, nothing special but not bad - really enjoyed breakfast and it’s a good location.
- Leonardo (7/5): Good - Very good service
Very kind staff
They arrange everything for your stay
Food was very good, including breakfast
Amazing location No Wifi in the room
Shower was terrible and the bathroom got all wet
They did not clean my room everyday.
Very bad smell coming from the bathroom
Bad quality linens and towels
You can't really close the room and avoid the entry of insects because the doors and windows are wooden and they don't have a glass.
- Hanna (6/5): Pleasant - Close to jungle entrance. Did not get the room we requested/paid for. Also, we were charged with extra fees during check-in which they did not commutatie about prior. Wifi only in lobby and yet poor connection. Breakfast could be better.
- Sabah (10/5): Je recommande - Excellent personnel au petit soin.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - The Ecolodge is a nice place to stay on the border of the Leuser forest. The food is quite hit and miss; the western food is particularly ropey and really needs changing - we don't all like cheap, sweet white bread and chicken sausages! The rooms are basic but nice with mosquito nets and hot showers. The staff are friendly and helpful.
- Blair (8/5): - Ecolodge was a great Base for our organised jungle hike. Good food and comfortable rooms. Ideally situated next to the river and is a short walk from the parking area.
- Louise (10/5): This place is amazing - Monkey heaven . It’s just on the edge of the forest for jungle trekking but if you’re feeling lazy you can stay at the hotel and watch two types of monkeys in the trees. Food is great and staff are really lovely and friendly. There’s a vast upstairs chill out area for reading and snoozing
