• Andrey (9/5): - This is an adorable small Ryokan. It looks new, with great views. Onsen is pretty small, but satisfying. Not so many things to do during day-time, but very relaxing. Location is very remote, which both good and bad depending on what you are looking for. Very nice breakfast and dinner with magnificent views and very friendly staff. Very spacious room. Highly recommended.

• Viviana (10/5): Ryokan with great prices and amazing onsens. - The onsens were really great, especially the partially open-air one. There was lots of availability for the onsens and the whiteboard system they use was super helpful. The staff was incredibly friendly and very helpful; they helped us arrange a taxi when we wanted to go to the snow monkey park and they offered a shuttle to the bus stop when we were checking out. The only downside is that it was a little difficult to get there. We tried following the instructions from Google maps but some of the bus information/details weren't correct or were confusing. I don't think that is really the ryokan's fault though; that might be more of a Google problem. Thankfully, we were able to figure it out by asking bus drivers for help and they knew what we were talking about when we said we were trying to go to Ryokan Warabino.

They pick you up from the local station, drop off as needed, and even drove me to the local clinic when I was feeling unwell to see a doctor. The food was delicious and the facilities were calm and relaxing, just what we needed after the hustle and bustle of Tokyo.

I much preferred this setup, as it allowed us to go as a couple without needing to split into gender-specific baths. Both dinner and breakfast were provided; the meals were interesting, tasty, and leaned toward traditional dishes that tourists don't often get to try. The view from the breakfast lounge was amazing, looking out over the mountains. There is also free parking on the premises. It’s not necessarily a dislike, but since the property is located in a small town, it is best to stock up on snacks, food, and fuel (if you're driving) before arriving.

• Lindsay (10/5): A beautiful, deeply nourishing traditional ryokan experience with exceptional food, healing baths, and truly outstanding - The food was exceptional, genuinely the best food we’ve had in Japan so far. Every meal felt like a beautiful, thoughtful experience, and the chance to cook some of the dishes at the table made it especially memorable, particularly for our 10-year-old son, who really loved that part by the end of our stay. The hot baths were incredible and brought so much relief to my hips, which were very painful when I arrived. The traditional onsen experience felt deeply healing. We also loved the opportunity to fully immerse ourselves in traditional Japanese culture, wearing the provided clothing and shoes truly felt like stepping into another world. The staff went above and beyond in every way, especially with transport, kindly picking us up from the train stations and making us feel so well cared for throughout our stay. It was a very special experience to share as a family. The location is quite remote, which adds to the peacefulness but can feel a little isolating if you’d like to explore the surrounding area more. If we were to return, we would likely hire a car so we could explore more freely. That said, the staff were incredibly helpful with transport, which made arriving and leaving very easy.

• Kevin (10/5): This is what I inviosioned when I pictured Japan. - It was amazing! Our stay there was our favorite part of Japan. The staff there was so friendly and helpful. The facility was nice and clean. The food provided was some of the best food we have eaten.

There's also a large public onsen next to the Ryokan you can use for free. Very good overall value for a traditional experience and foreigner friendly. Some coffee availability would be nice.

Loved that they used as much of the regional produce in their meals. The three private onsens were great - good and organized system and the space was kept very clean. Staff were really pleasant and great! They also provided complimentary access to the public next door which was a nice touch to the overall experience. There was the occasional smell of sewer within the room which we couldn't quite figure out where it was coming from but it wasn't bad enough for us to flag it to the staff.

The communication with the stuff was a bit tricky since they spoke little English. This was a problem to understand how the onsen reservation system worked.

The food was amazing, I am vegetarian and they made an extra special effort to make sure that I had just as good food as my meat and fish eating husband. The onsens were great, very relaxing. It is fairly remote. We wanted to combine our stay with some hiking but it's not really possible. So if you are there, you kind of just stay there.

Our room was clean and spacious but a little dated with an unusable stove that could be removed for luggage storage. The 3 baths were all well kept and felt quite private, 2 are outside. I Recommend driving here, there is a great waterfall not far but otherwise mostly farmland within walking distance. I would love to visit again

Especially the outdoor one provided a fantastic time, the peace and quiet of it makes you feel renewed extremely quickly. The food was interesting - and plenty of it! - and it provided a nice insight into a traditional dining experience. The hotel, however, is quite old-school and could definitely use a facelift by now, I think the pictures have been edited to make it look more modern. Having said that, I think the remote location and the calmness it offers really make up for it, sleeping on the floor on a Tatami with an open window, with only sounds of nature coming in, was absolutely fabulous after the overwhelming few days we had at Tokyo and Kyoto. The only odd thing was being charged additional tax at check out even though our reservation receipt clearly stated we’ve already paid it.

• Diana (9/5): Superb - It was a lovely authentic experience. The facilities are clean and well taken care off. You will be warmly welcomed. There are 3 private spas which you can enjoy (x2 open air). We had both the breakfast and the dinner and it was very fresh/ delicious(mind, all very traditional). The dining with the mounting view was amazing. Highly recommend! The only thing which I would suggest improving are the flat and hard pillows which can cause discomfort. A softer, more elevated pillow, especially when sleeping on a futon, would have made the sleep much better.
• Christian (10/5): Exceptional - All the staff were so welcoming and friendly, like they really want you to enjoy your stay. Funny story: I accidentally left my dinner early, thinking I had finished all the dishes. So I left to go to my room. Soon the front desk called my room saying I missed the last dish and dessert and would deliver it to my room :D This shows how hospitable and accommodating they were. I was also super appreciative for the scheduled ride back to Yudanaka station (you can request in advance). I had an enjoyable conversation all the way to the station since the gentleman offering the ride spoke really good english. It felt like a family member was dropping me off at the airport. Excellent experience, onsen, lodging, food, hospitality.
