Guest Reviews
- Matthew (10/5): Comfortable stay in a historical inn - Lovely staff, really. Food was good. Bed comfortable. Free parking Possibly needs a better eye for interior design and a refresh of bathroom but perfectly comfortable, clean and functional
- Cheryl (9/5): Lovely quirky place to stop. - Qurky pub, friendly staff and great for overnight stop before taking a plane. Nothing
- Katerina (8/5): -
- Gloria (1/5): - Non esiste . Booking non dovrebbe neanche elencare una struttura del genere . Addirittura il taxista mi ha chiesto se volessi veramente restare . Sono scappata
- karen (10/5): -
- Stanley (9/5): Good place overall for a reasonably priced stay in a good location. - Lovely old pub with rooms above. Good quality food and choice. Public transport nearby is a bonus. Set in a small town that is well kept. Not necessarily something that could be improved, but the access stairs to the upstairs rooms very steep and with a turn (no intermediate landing). However, when the pub is closed there is access via an external staircase (also the fire exit) with a coded lock. This can be used at any time.
- Charlie (6/5): -
- Robin (10/5): Quintessentially English - An exceptional accomodation fully equipped with real ale on tap. Rooms were spacious. Parking was secure. Staff were fantastic Nothing comes to mind
- Stephen (6/5): -
- Heselden (8/5): - Good location and beautiful building Cobwebs and dust in room. Mattress/topper very comfortable. Breakfast doesn't start until 8am weekends so only got to have 1/3 that we paid for.
- Deborah (9/5): The staff were excellent - v helpful and friendly. -
- SA (6/5): -
- Wendy Smith (10/5): Cosy practical and perfect for pets - Excellent practical room for myself and dogs . Needed to leave earlier and was given a bacon sandwich for my journey . Excellent front of house staff would happily return
- Margaret (7/5): - Staff and owner very welcoming and friendly. Very good breakfast and we were able to have our room for extra time. Quiz was good fun on Sunday evening. Good location. Rooms would benefit from upgrade.
- Achara (8/5): Overall is good - Charming buildings and friendly staff. Bathroom and shower too small due to the old building style.
- natalie (5/5): It was good for somewhere to sleep. Also I would recommend the pub opposite - I love the location and food was amazing. I love the style of the room. The room wasn’t cleaned properly and it needed a few updates like a new tv. And the shower room needs updating new sink and shower and door.

- Keith (8/5): - The atmosphere in the Pub & the friendliness of the staff. Excellent breakfast . Warm pork scratchings from the bar aree delicious The hotel is on the flight path of Birmingham airport, so was woken by planes at 6am. If you are a plane enthusiast this would be a great place to stay in the summer
- Margarett (4/5): Good location, but needs to be renovated. - The facilities need to be updated and modernised throughout.
- Lisa (8/5): -
- Aitman (9/5): Lovely traditional pub with cute homley rooms that were super comfy and warm with all the stuff you need. - I love the old charm to the building and how busy it was in the pub and how homely and warm it was. No vegan options for breakfast but bean on toast.
- Brendan (8/5): Great location to stay with easy train access to NEC, airport and city. Wouldn’t hesitate to stay there again. -
- Stephen (3/5): Great location for wedding venue the price of the room was ridiculous and the size of the room was l - Breakfast was very good. Staff were excellent they let us in our room early The room was tiny with stairs going up to the floor where the room was. Getting out of the bed there was a foot gap before the stairs quite dangerousgrwt
- John (9/5): Would be pleased to stay again. - We were the only ones at breakfast and received excellent service from the landlord who was very sociable. Fortunately we took our own gluten free bread as in spite of notifying them in advance there was none available. Breakfast was otherwise excellent.
- John (9/5): Comfortable stay with friendly and helpful staff . Great breakfast too . - Typical old style country pub N/a
- Claire (10/5): An interesting, unique, historic inn. Friendly staff. Great location. A little tired in places. -
- Jack (10/5): -
- Kim (8/5): Enyoyable stay - Warm atmosphere , lovely staff Cramped bedroom ( No 9)
- Roger (9/5): -
- Sophie (8/5): -
- Laura (9/5): - Lovely staff, allowed us to check in early. Pub is really cute and location was perfect for us as we were attending a wedding at the Hampton manor. The room we stayed in was are a little dated and the lights in the room were quite dim (with limited daylight) but this wasn't too much of an issue for us.
- Linda (8/5): A fabulous stay, especially for the NEC - Loved the historical quirky nature of the rooms, the staff were fabulous and the breakfast excellent. Dinner was good as well. The location for an event at the NEC couldn’t have been better. A little bit of noise from the bar and outside the bedroom with old keys in locks and loud neighbours.
- Andrea (8/5): Excellent location for staying at Hampton manor - Great for visiting Hampton Msnor Radiator was very hot in the room
- Nolan (7/5): -
- Janet (8/5): Convenient location with very friendly staff. - Proximity to Hampton Manor wedding venue Stairs! Outdoor set were difficult when using a walking stick and indoor stairs incredibly narrow and steep for same person
- Stephen (8/5): - Friendly staff and good food
- Paul (5/5): Would consider staying again if it was possible to book one of the 2 rooms external to the pub - Location was good, Friendly staff. Parking was easy. good selection of beers. cosy atmosphere. Nice open fire. Dogs are allowed in bars and restaurant Did not like the room, it was too small for 2 people and two dogs, In addition the stairs up to the room were extremely steep and at the bottom you are faced with a door that is literally adjacent to the bottom step. The only exit once the pub was closed was via the fire exit. Our dog did not want to walk on the open grid construction.
- Helen (10/5): Lovely place - Great location for staying over after wedding at Hampton Manor - less than 5 mins walk.
Lovely, cosy and friendly pub. Rooms basic, clean and comfortable and tasty breakfast. Good value.
All staff were friendly and helpful. Nothing! Only tiny thing, would have been nice to have teabags in the room (coffee was available). But generally great and would stay again/recommend.
- Maxie (8/5): -
- Alice (10/5): Exceptional - Friendly staff, amazing food, very comfortable bed, great location. Nothing
- K (9/5): -
- Burchell (10/5): An old pub building with a warm welcome and good facilities on site. - We chose location as the pub was near the NEC for an evening concert. Staff welcoming and friendly. Free car park. Room was clean and tidy albeit a little "quirky" due to the age (old) of the building. We were on 1st floor with steep steps to be aware of and floor was uneven, again due to age. I believe there are ground floor rooms available. Restaurant food was very good as was the breakfast choice. Would stay here again.
- Ginette (9/5): - Staff were exceptional
- Karen (10/5): -
- Adrian (10/5): A short stay in a lovely country pub - Good value accomodatoon in a 400 year old pub in an ideal location with good food We were visiting the NEC and the White Lion seemed an ideal off site place to stay. The quality of the food was very good, a mix of traditional pub food food with some good options on the specials board
- Louise (7/5): Perfect for what we needed - The property was close to where we were dining, it had a lovely welcome and staff were kind and helpful. Breakfast was lovely, just wish there was a little more - mainly because it was good and well cooked! We had a room with twin beds and when we moved them closer together, it was obvious they hadn’t been moved for some time.
- Gareth (8/5): - Location, food Room a bit tired
- Sam (10/5): -
- Haworth (9/5): Lovely stay - Lovely character rooms. The staff are very friendly and helpful. Lovely pub with great food. Breakfast was included which was delicious.
The location is great for visiting the pulse live, just one stop on the train. Not a negative as it's part of the character of the old building but just to be aware of; some v low beams in the hallways upstairs and into the bathroom.
- Keith (9/5): This is the third time I have stayed at this location. It’s a nice pub with a good menu. The accommodation is comfortabl - Its location, a short ride from NEC centre The heating went off in our room quite early but there was an oil filled radiator available which was used to keep the room warm.
- Jeff (7/5): Good simple accomodation for a night or two. - Good simple accommodation, easy to access late at night on return. Breakfast was good quality.
- Nishikanta (7/5): -
- Mark (4/5): Just ok - Parking ok Dated rooms albeit an old building
- laura (8/5): We had a lovely stay - staff were very nice and it was very comfortable and homely - We liked the area it was cute and nice to be away from the busy city. The staff were very nice. The breakfast was nice too. The bed was very comfortable. The room was clean. Would definitely recommend 😊 The room was small but it was cozy! There wasn’t many shops/facilities nearby if you don’t have a car
- James (8/5): - Clean, quiet room, staff very friendly. Breakfast was ok, but could have been a little better
- Colligan (9/5): - Nice local pub with friendly staff.
- Terence (10/5): Great location 5 miles from NEC - Nice old inn N/a
- julie (10/5): - Brilliant staff and beautiful building
- Angie (10/5): A special find - The welcome, the atmosphere, the location, the room, the food, the drinks .. all excellent There wasn’t anything to dislike
- Alan (9/5): - Breakfast was cooked fresh and hot, good quality produce, Bottle of water in the room and a hand towel, nothing major, would happily stay again.
- Duncan (10/5): -
- sue (9/5): -
- Simon (9/5): -
- simone (10/5): - Small cozy room fairly priced and with breakfast!
Staff is very friendly Nothing really
- Spangle (9/5): Welcoming, comfortable and good value. Would highly recommend this hotel. - I would recommend The White Lion Inn to my friends because the location is ideal if you are visiting the NEC at Birmingham. We go there every year and it is very expensive staying at NEC. This location is one stop on the train from NEC and is easy to get to. The White Lion Inn is comfortable, affordable and a lovely place to stay. We loved the room as it is different from your standard hotel room. Old worldy, wooden beams, low doorways but still has all the facilities of a much more expensive hotel. The beds were very comfortable. We had food which was great and the breakfast was also very good. We also returned to the hotel after being at NEC and had a relaxing drink in the bar. Staff were very friendly and engaging. We will definitely stay here again. There wasnt anything I didn't like about this hotel.
- Daniel (7/5): - nice and warm spider webs
- Jen (3/5): Its such a shame because it could be amazing if some money was spent on the place. - The location was lovely, the staff were absolutely lovely and couldn't do enough, the gentleman who greeted us when we arrived was lovely and really helpful. The lady at breakfast was especially welcoming and very attentive, and polite and we felt so welcomed. The pub is lovely and old and in a great location. The full English breakfast was really nice, tasty good quality. My daughter wasn't hungry, so just had cornflakes but she couldn't eat them because unfortunately they were stale and soft. The food at lunch was inedible, I made an excuse for our night-time booking because lunch was a waste of money because we didn't eat it. At breakfast I went to thd pub toilets and was almost sick it smelt so bad. It had not been cleaned from thd night before, it stunk of poo and was dirty and there was no toilet paper. The room itself was small, very noisy. I dont know if it was pipes or water boiler but a massive loud noise woke us up at 5.30am and then again at 6 ish. We could hear people either side through the walls. The shower head was mouldy and I did debate if I needed one. I got one and it was not very powerful but because of the shower head being dirty I felt unclean when I got out. There is no bin in the bedroom. I took a of our rubbish home in the boot. There were cobwebs all over the ceiling and spiders in the wardrobe. The kettle was full of water and I must of killed about 10 beer flys!! Or what looked like that.
- Jan (10/5): - Friendly and welcoming, lovely hot breakfast
- Jim (2/5): Disappointed - The Room was okay food job I did not rake a cat as the Double bed took up most of the space. But other than that it was acceptable, just!
Byt was really has anniyed me was the way the Hotel have dealt with the fact that Hotels .com booke a second room - maybe it was in case I wanted to swing a Cat in the room! When I arrived at the Hotel I raised the matter with them they blamed Hotels.com when I got Home Hotels.com regusef to do anything about approval from the Hotel so nearly 10 days since my stay and after numerous phone calls and chasing eventually got my Refund no thanks to the Hotel as the Woman who spike to the Rep from Horels.com was rude and would not speak to them on the Phone! Not very professional and very rude.
- Joanne (10/5): Great pub, fab breakfast - Lovely, quaint pub. Room was beautiful. Allowed me to check in early. Breakfast was great, cooked to order, plenty of choice. The room was a little cold, couldn't get the heating to work.
- Rick (8/5): -
- Sophie113 (4/5): Not a private room to stay in. - This is not a review about the pub! Which actually looked lovely. This is a review of the accommodation in the outbuildings. On arrival, we picked up the keys from the pub and were given directions by a very polite member of staff to our room. This was through the car park then through an area that had fake grass and seating for customers. This obviously had quite a few people sitting enjoying their afternoon, which while being a pub is absolutely great. What wasn't great was that our room was right there, children literally on the doorstep making quite a bit of noise. Which is obviously still ok as it is a pub! But the room wasn't private, the only window opened up to this area so you can't even open the curtains, also the only lighting was a lamp on either side of the bed so it was very dull and dark. We decided not to stay as it was so noisy we couldn't even hear each other, so after 2/3 minutes we left. We did make contact to the pub to say we couldn't stay and were offered the cost of breakfast as a refund. We were very disappointed to say the least. I didn't take up this offer as we ended up staying in a much nicer place down the road for a better price and quality.
- Sandra (9/5): Clean, comfortable and very welcoming - Breakfast was nice and location was perfect for me
- Laura-Jane (10/5): Lovely country pub - Great location for NEC, proper English pub in a beautiful village, really friendly staff Nothing

- Clare (10/5): Local stay for a wedding - Location
- Clare (10/5): Great location for a local wedding - Location
- Susanne (5/5): - Beliggenhed var fint, ok morgenmad Beskidt, ingen dør imellem værelse og toilet, for dyrt i forhold til standart
- Bruce (9/5): -
- CHRIS (3/5): -
- Martin (1/5): Dangerous and dishonest. - The owner gave me a lift to the station when I left. I was given a small room which was half the size of the ones on your website and with inferior furnishings. This was not the room the advertising promised.b
Worse yet, the entrance was at the top of the stairs, one mis-step and you would fall down them. It was dangerous.
I asked to change rooms but could not for that night although was able to on the second night.
One of the worst places I have ever stayed.
- Janet (8/5): Wedding stopover - Comfortable bed.(Room 1).Friendly Staff. Outdated shower room.Wardrobe needed to be fixed to the wall.Wonkey table to big for the room.
- Lynne (6/5): Comfortable. Good food - Parking good. Evening meal very nice Lamp by the bed wasn't working and the tap moved when you turned it on
- Linda (10/5): Super stay with friendly staff. - Location steeped in history. Beautiful design. Staff were friendly and relaxed. Nothing.
- Julie (8/5): Great stay in a lovely pub/Inn in a lovely village - Great stay here, staff very welcoming, Great dinner at night and cooked breakfast was lovely, dog friendly and had our own front door which was handy for the dog, plus a garden, parking free if stayed and free stay for the dog which is great and don't find that in many places now, would recommend and would stay again if going half way down South. Prices of food/drinks were reasonable. Bed was a little creaky but comfortable
- Jackie (10/5): Exceptional -
- Jonathan (9/5): A great stay in a very relaxing place! Staff were great and the food fantastic! - The country inn feel and the staff Nothing really, it was all good!
