Guest Reviews
- Fish (8/5): - The owner is friendly, the room is spacious, the whole house is very clean 👍 will definitely stay again when go to kyoto
- Motoharu (10/5): -
- Dinara (8/5): Wonderful stay in a wonderful city! Thanks a lot 🌸 -
- Elena (10/5): -
- Kseniya (10/5): - Location and the host are great
- COMPERE (9/5): Stay at a Japanese guest for a great price - The host is fantastic, super friendly and helpful. You get a whole spacious Japanese style room to yourself. The location is very central. The price is very honest for what you get. It was a bit cold at night but the AC heats the room in no time for a comfortable night Having the shower separated is a bit annoying but that makes the price attractive.
- Hanna (10/5): - Vackert och traditionellt boende, familjärt och trevligt.
- Laura (10/5): - It was a real pleasure staying at Toru's wonderful accomodation. Everything was clean, well equipped, the beds were comfortable and plenty of space. Toru was just amazing- sent us lots of tipps for sightseeing and restaurant and was alltogether just lovely. And the foot massage machine was a game changer 😍
- Robert (10/5): Amazing host and guesthouse. - Toru was an amazing host.
Very helpful and responsive.
Cute guesthouse, plenty of room for me!

- Charmaine (9/5): Great property and location. The 2 bathrooms and 2 toilets are so useful to a big group, you just need to be prepared to - Although it’s a bit older, the place is so well maintained and clean. The host and the staff are so very helpful. The place is well stocked with amenities (even have foot massages and massage chairs). It’s neat to stores and the station (and the bath house is just opposite us!). It’s charming in that it’s older but it would stand a little sprucing up as we had walked past a few guest houses that looked like they did a bit more work to them over the years.
Rien
- Luis (8/5): Spacious rooms and good value. - Spacious, private. The shared bathrooms were not an issue here.
- Kevin (10/5): Budget friendly for the quiet traveler in a real Japanese home - More traditional home style which I preferred. Toru was very nice, helpful, and informative. I liked the nice shared common space that made a communal feeling even though you had a private room. I slept very well! No complaints at all.
- Fadi (10/5): Wonderful experience ! - I recommend this guesthouse 100%. Staff is lovely, rooms are spacy and confortable, location is great !
We loved it !!!
- Quintal (9/5): Superb - Traditional old Japanese house with Wi-fi, western shower, AC/Heater. You could come and go at whichever time felt convinient for you. The host - Toru prepared list of tips and events in Kyoto.
- Ekaterina (8/5): Very good - We enjoyed our stay in the guesthouse. The host is always available and helpful. The tatami room is just super cozy. The shower is outside the room in the court and it could be a bit cold.
- Rubytė (10/5): Exceptional - The place has an authentic spark, we loved to stay here! The owner is really kind and helpful, gave a lot of tips and recommendations. Perfect for experiencing authentic Kyoto! It was a bit cold at night, but there was an ac and warm blankets, so it's not a problem! There's an onsen just by the place, so you can relax after a long day of exploring
- Armando (10/5): Exceptional - Superb location.
Owner is a fantastic host and goes out of his way to make sure guests are welcomed and comfortable.
Great Onsen across the road.
- Mel (10/5): Exceptional - Very nice and friendly host.
The room was really clean and the bed was confortable.
- Wongsatorn (10/5): Exceptional -
- Diane (9/5): Superb -
- Sílvia (10/5): Wonderful stay - Really nice tradicional house and very attentive staff.
- María (9/5): Would stay here again if back in Kyoto. - Traditional house in Kyoto, away from the tourist crowds, so a great spot to relax after a whole day walking around.
The rooms were nice and clean, bed was comfortable and Chris was very nice and accommodating.
- Graham (9/5): Superb - A lot more than I expected for the price. Great hosts and recommendations. Very cute common areas and the room was cozy. Felt right at home!
- Lucy (9/5): Lovely, traditional room near the centre of Kyoto. - The host was incredibly helpful, and patient in responding to our many questions! The layout and style is traditional, which we loved. It's a quirky property.
- Alex (9/5): Great traditional Japanese room in the heart of Kyoto - The best thing of Colours is its location and the fact that they have only two rooms. If the other guest is talking loudly you could hear him clearly as if he was in your room. I had to go out at midnight and ask him to end the conversation as it was just after midnight. The place is like a doll house: all made of paper, sliding doors, fine thin walls and ceilings. It takes some time to get used to it. Not too much natural light, but I don't mind as I spent my day outside anyway.
- Iwona (10/5): Exceptional - Amazing owner, helped us a lot in organizing our time. Great recommendations for restaurants and japanise public baths. Great home atmosphere, you can feel at home. Everything you need is available. Close to the bus stop and shops.
- Kriegshauser (10/5): Exceptional - Everything was perfect. Wish we wouldve stayed longer!
- Hyunsoo (10/5): Time travel to a day in the Medieval Japan - It was indeed an incredible experience to stay in a traditional Japanese room. You can also enjoy amazing days in this place with high quality at a very affordable price. Plus, the owner here is a really a friendly person. You can make good memories with him also
- Tiffany (7/5): Overall it was find for the price paid - The tatami room was the nicest part. It was quite a big room. It was nice to have a fridge to use and dish soap to clean my water bottle. I was surprised that there was a kyusu as many places unfortunately don't. The shower was fairly clean. Though the rug seemed kinda gross. The other Japanese-style tub only used once as it didn't seem like it was meant for other guests. Other guest were smoking in the courtyard area. I was glad to not be in one of the rooms near that as that smell makes me sick.
- Senalda (9/5): Superb -
- Hendrik (10/5): Homely stay in Kyoto - Colours gave me a homely vibe, the owner, Toru, is really nice and will help you with any of your needs. There are two shared bathrooms, one western shower and one Japanese style bath. And if you really want a taste of Japan, try the sento (Japanese public bath house) in front of the hotel. When you have room B, don't forget to say hello to the gold fishes and the tanuki statues.
- Francois (10/5): Love it - Traditionnal style is amazing
- Xinyu (10/5): Exceptional - host and stuff are all warm-hearted and friendly, patient for everything. Hope them good luck. None
- Farhan (9/5): Nice stay in a traditional place. - Felt traditional, had a kitchen, good internet. Toru (the host) helped me get a bike when I arrived and also let me check in early which was helpful.
- Jonas (10/5): 10/10 would recommend! - Really nice little place with perfect location in kyoto. The owner is super friendly and offers help and suggestions for your trip. I highly recommend staying!
- Julien (10/5): Exceptional - Very comfortable and silent place. Really good location too. The owner was really nice and friendly.
- Zachary (10/5): Exceptional -
- Dennis (10/5): Exceptional -
- Lemarechal (10/5): Exceptional -
- Uysal (10/5): Cozy and warm stay for winter vacation - This place is a cozy and cute place if you’re looking for the inn experience but with a much more affordable price.
The placement of the hostel is convenient as it’s near the heart of Kyoto with busy streets and practical transport stations.
We were welcomed for 2 days and 1 night by the owner, super good english with who i completed the check in. He would explain clearly the rules and how things works and will have any recommendation for restaurants, place to see and even onsen !
You have a living room with a warm up table (super nice to try it for the first time during winter). The bathroom and toilets are outside with lavabos outside as well so you need to brush your hands or teeth’s in the cold but you have fuzzy robes available so at the end it wasn’t bothersome.
The room is clean and nice with yellowish light bulbs so for sensitive eyes as mine it was comforting. The futon was comfortable and you have AC/Heater in the room.
Overall it was a nice experience and I will gladly book again in this place if I go back to Kyoto one day. Be careful if you are a light sleeper (no one was in our group of friend) because the hotel is on 1 floor only and depending on your room you can have windows next to the street so you can easily hear people talking or car/scooter passing by.
- Jessie (10/5): Exceptional -
- Kseniia (9/5): Good ryokan experience, lovely and helpful owner - Lovely owner, nice location and great ryokan guesthouse experience in Kyoto. Here you can experience a stay in Japanese traditional ryokan: tatami beds, Japanese furniture. The owner is very helpful, cheerful and was happy to share some great places to visit in Kyoto during our stay.
- Cristina (10/5): Exceptional - Perfect place to stay! The owner was very welcoming and we felt like home. We could leave our luggages until late at night after the check-in. Not so much to say! Just perfect!
- Jesus (10/5): Fantastic location and great host! - Toru was a fantastic host and helped us book an awesome night in a local izakaya. Everything in the property was really clean, and we got to stay in a nice traditional kyoto room. Nothing
- Alicia (10/5): beautiful traditional tatami room ! - amazing traditional tatami room with very affordable price, we loved the cute and beautiful old house of the owner who was very welcoming. the tatami beds were so comfortable and the guesthouse vibe was very welcoming. We went to the public bath in the street and loved our stay in kyoto! I recommend 200% this place !! Because it's an old traditional japanese house, the bedroom might be a little cold in the winter but there is an electric heater.
- Atchariya (10/5): Exceptional - The hospitality of owner is exceptional

- Nur (10/5): Exceptional -
- François (8/5): Very good -
- Paul (10/5): Exceptional -
- Iliana (10/5): Amazing stay in a Japanese traditional house. Phantastic value for money - huge traditional japanese 2 rooms with a view to a cute mini garden and own entrance (I had room A). The location is top! In a resident area with traditional japanese houses and with a lot of restaurants in short walking distance. Just opposit the public bath if you happen to also be a fan. Toru is an amazing and very helpful host! Can‘t think of anything. I even extended my stay.
- Barbara (10/5): Exceptional - everything was amazing and i would recomend it to anyone I know. very confortable and clean space, also traditional and pleasant. quiet and calm street. everything we needed was at hand. good amenities in kitchen and bathroom. great location, near nishiki market and good restaurants around. nice local onsen close by. JR bus to central station and many interest locations 7 min walk.
- Luis (10/5): Just perfectly off-center, within walking distance of eastern Kyoto. Convenient public bath 20 meters away. Very friendl -
- Luis (10/5): Exceptional -
- Verified traveler (8/5):
