• Carol (8/5): Very good - Beautiful ryokan in the heart of Gion. Expect the traditional setting, with thin walls and futons. Nice shared lounge with a cute small garden. The staff is nice and welcoming!
• John (9/5): Just great! - We wanted to experience Japanese type accommodations and selected this property specifically for that reason. It did not disappoint. It’s a 100 year old house, carefully and lovingly maintained with updates you would expect (toilets, AC, etc.). The futons were clean and comfortable. The room was tastefully decorated and the sliding doors and windows opened on a charming Japanese garden. Beautiful. The location in the best part of Gion is a plus. Highly recommend this property if you’re looking for an authentic stay in Kyoto. Nothing
• Anonymous (10/5): Best staff and beautiful stay - The hotel was amazing. Super comfy futons. Clean showers and bathrooms. Ample amenities. Even the best employees (a super sweet dog). Only comment is that you're paying for a historic home. It's over 100 years old and in amazing condition, but the walls are original and thin so it may get noisy. However, the staff and other guests were quiet so noise was never a problem for us!!

• Sharon (5/5): Pictures make it seem nicer than it is - It was fine and a great location, but the pictures make it seem nicer than it is. We were given four hard tiny towels and when we asked for more they wanted to charge us. The photos said nothing about a crazy narrow ladder like stairs to get to the 3 bed room so we couldn't bring our luggage to the bedrooms. The kitchenette was dirty. The beds were comfortable but for the 3rd room we had to ask for a futon which was tiny and insufficient. I think for the money we paid you could get much better in the area. It was very cold. It isn't a hotel or guesthouse it's just rooms, ours was old as a "delux" suite it was neither.
• Robert (7/5): We enjoyed our stay at Hotel Lantern Gion mainly thanks to the lovely staff, the early curfew is a bit of a pain FYI - The staff were so lovely and welcoming, and it’s in a great location. There is a 9pm curfew in place which we didn’t know until arriving which did hamper the experience slightly. The layout of the accommodation does mean it’s a lot of stooping over if you are tall.

The front desk host is nice and makes plenty of recommendations. Really close walk to a 7/11, shrines and bus stop. The staffs rules are a little strict since you can't enter between 10 and 4 and you only get one washcloth and towel for the whole stay. Cold u til the heater really kicks in.

• Hannah (9/5): A bit pricey, but special and unique stay in an old, traditional house. Recommend! - Beautiful traditional room, great hosts. Room had wifi, towels, and a toothbrush. Bathrooms were orderly and clean with soap, shampoo and conditioner. There is one bathroom and one shower dedicated to women only, which I appreciated. In a quiet area - we were not disturbed while sleeping, despite the building being old with thin walls. Host gave us good recommendations and enjoyed chatting with us. We stayed in the largest room with courtyard views which was a bit pricey, but understandably so - beautiful views and spacious room. Felt very private. We went during the winter - so of course it was a bit cold, but that was to be expected. Water for washing hands was ice cold, but shower water was hot.

• Noel (9/5): Traditional and simple. Feel at home in Kyoto - The lady attending the facility was very nice to us. She gave us lots of recommendations for tourism, and also allowed us to practice our emerging japanese. The facility is very traditional so you have to share toilets and shower. Noices from the facility and other rooms can be easily heard, but people staying were generally very quiet. The location was great. And our room was very big At first not having your own bathroom is kind of shocking, but you get used to it and end up feeling at home.

There is a lounge outside the rooms that has some additional amenities. The staff are super friendly and speak multiple languages. The walls are super thin and the rooms are right next to each other, so noise has to be very carefully considered. Room was overall clean but some of the cushions were dirty.

• Eleonore (8/5): Very good - So near kenninji temple. They have a zen garden. You could rent the entire second floor with private bathroom. Small boutique guesthouse. Great living room. It's a cosy Japanese guesthouse. Great to meet neighbours. A touch of dust here and there. The code to get in at the beginning (self check in not that easy. Once you know it's great). Taxi don't know the address they will drop you close by. Self check out was easy. You have to vacate the property from 11 to 3pm. Not convenient.

• Anna (7/5): Old Inn in Gion District - Loved staying in a traditional inn right in the Gion district. The owner is great and very accommodating. Her dog is usually hanging out around the building too. So cute! Comfy futons with extra padding. The garden view room was lovely. Lots of site seeing within walking distance. It's an old building so you can really hear everything in it. Bring earplugs (they did have them at the front desk too) and expect to use them. Luckily our fellow guests were very polite and quiet, but this place is a big gamble in regards to that.

Kind and helpful staff. Thank you for the stay! As everyone says, the walls are really thin and i had a 6month baby in a room next to me, it was impossible to sleep until it stopped crying. Eg a rule to not let kids under 6 stay would be great.

• Heerak (1/5): Bad - It was the worst experience, the rooms are too close to the toilet and smells, There is water flowing on the ground of the rooms, making the room wet and humid throughout the night, The *receptionist* cannot speak English and only understand 4 to 5 worlds, live translation is must. The overall height of the facility also disturbs proper mobility , Meaning i banged my head 5 times in 3 different locations of the accommodation, It's not a proper or luxurious ryokan experience and can say it isn't one because I have experience so much better for a little bit more money , Wouldn't recommend to people looking for a *comfortable sleep and relaxation.

If you are a light sleeper you might have problems with people talking as the walls are too thin (it's a traditional Japanese house made with paper walls, so that's expected I guess).

• Maxime (9/5): Super comfortable, friendly and affordable. Would go back to stay there in a heartbeat next time. - For the price it cost us, the place exceeded our expectations. We were 6 to travel together and we had the whole second floor to ourselves. Everything was super comfortable and the staff was lovely, even helped us with restaurant suggestions and calling taxis. The only thing I would nitpick is that it's closed between 11am and 4 pm, and it's written in small text in the informations on the website, so we didn't see it. So if you want to drop your luggages before check-in, be sure to be there before 11am or you'll have to carry it all day with you like we did.

They were charging 800 yen just to keep the bags for a few hours after check out ,absurd ! During most of the day and morning nobody’s there to help out for info etc,.. nobody around when you want to rent a bike .Internet didn’t always work well .. They had a coffee station but I only figured out after the third day ..

• Agata (9/5): Lovely old traditional house with charming Auntie as your host - 134 year old traditional house hosted by a lovely Aunt and her cute dog! Perfect location! The owner was super considerate, sharing recommendations and tips (in Japanese, English or Chinese). Wooden floors were super cozy, futons super comfortable and AC kept us cool/warm when needed. Would 100% book it again! 谢谢阿姨！我们非常喜欢您的兵官！希望快快有极坏再一次见！ House itself is charming, but comes with a drawbacks of a machiya house - paper thin walls, you can hear people talking in every room - please have some earplugs with you and don’t choose this place if you have young children or loud group of friends :D

• Aiden (9/5): Superb - Number 1 best thing about the accommodation was the cute dog The location was amazing, super central to Gion. Very cool traditional building with access to our own toilet, shower, microwave, and fridge.
• Jonas (8/5): Great! - The old building is really charming and have a nice feeling. The rooms cozy and the shower and toilet are up to standard not more not less. Perfect. The rooms are leaking sound through the thin walls to one another

The Lady that works there is so nice and cute and tried to Help us with everything :) the futon and cushion were very comfortable. But the Walls are rather thin so be warned. • Gerry (9/5): Beautiful and Comfy Accommodation - Staff are very friendly, the guest house is in a great location for exploring. Showers hot water is turned off at a certain time of night, so don’t try and take a late night shower.

• Brian (9/5): Superb - If you want to practice your Japanese, the lady who runs the place is very willing to help you, we had quite a good talk, also she speaks Chinese Once you get use to the coded locks it's ok but a bit frustrating trying to upload passport details and stuff, via the internet
• Michael (6/5): Clean and kind host, not restful - Clean and utilitarian. Very kind host. However, the walls are incredibly thin, light pouring in each window all night, and an incredibly loud dog barking throughout the night inside the house.

• Charley (7/5): Traditional style Ryokan, lovely host, clean and great value for money. - Traditional style Ryokan, great location and the owner was a lovely lady with an adorable puppy. Bathroom and washroom were clean and the shared spaces were quiet and tidy. rooms were close together so had to keep very quiet in order to respect the other guests.
• Josephine (8/5): The place alone is an experience. - Old but gold. A must stay if one’s looking for a taste of traditional Japanese living arrangement.
