Guest Reviews
- Tomáš (10/5): -
- Seb (2/5): Terrible - Location Bathroom was so unclean, mould all over the ceiling
Broken glass on floor
Old milk carton under bed
Terrible
- DEBORAH (7/5): comfy and quite close to the theatre - staff lovely helpful and friendly leak in shower and a bit damp in room..not fab..but the owner did alert us to the problem the day before
id sy just check before you book that the shower/bath are fixed and the rooms really need some tlc..in good need of painting etc ..but bed was comfy and the staff were lovely
- Mark (10/5): -
- Joanne (8/5): Comfortable and quirky - Really comfy beds. Great view of the church at the back. Liked the stylish gothic theme. Friendly helpful staff. Excellent full English in the restaurant. Bathroom needed some TLC. Parking not easy in East Grinstead (obviously the property has no control over that). Would have liked a B+B option so breakfast included in price. No lit mirror for applying makeup (very minor point!)
- Nick (6/5): Met our needs for one night, but property needs some maintenance - location, availability, ease of check-in.
Quirky Style bed was very noisy and wobbly.
Needs attention/repair
Bathroom ventilation failed - mouldy ceiling and paint peeling - clear damp/humidity issue. I am sure fixing the fans and lights would greatly improve.
Bathroom heating not working.
- Paul (6/5): - Room was ok but needed heating on , it was switched off around 6 pm am so the room cold all night which was a shame
- GILLI (4/5): Disappointed - Room was clean and fresh bedding. Wardrobe door had to be held shut with my large suitcase. Sink plug perished, water escaped. Coffee packets old, hard. Great difficulty opening swollen wooden main door to the Street. Nobody on site answering my phone calls for assistance, went Direct to Answer phone.
Checked out early.
- Martin (7/5): -
- S Randall (8/5): Lovely room, location and welcoming host. - Great location and room. A bit tired in the bathroom.
- Daniella (7/5): Pleasant hotel, great location for staying in East Grinstead - The hotel itself looked lovely. It’s an old property, so the decor is in keeping with an older house. The rooms were adequate, although could do we a bit of tlc, door to the bathroom creaked. I went to have a cup of tea but the cups were very stained, which put me off having a cup. I’m assuming that the water from
The taps in the bathroom is drinkable, but maybe some signs to confirm this.
- Stella (5/5): -
- Anna (8/5): -
- Kevin (8/5): - The room was nice and warm. The quality of the cleaning could have been better. Corners of the room were very dusty. Both cups in the room had strong tanin stains
- Rachel (10/5): - The rooms were beautifully laid out.
The staff were friendly and professional.
We came up for a funeral and the staff were lovely. Nothing
- Brian (8/5): convenient and pleasant -
- Carolyn (8/5): -
- Elaine (10/5): -
- Roger (9/5): -
- James (7/5): - Convient central location Ill fitting mattress and bathroom could have been cleaner.
- Thomas (8/5): Spartan race - Quick, easy and clean The beds were very squeaky any time you moved it was a drama lol.
- Gavin (10/5): - Excellent hotel! Really nice stuff great location and the takeaway is delicious.
- Sarah (4/5): - The room is compact and basic. There is a door in the floor below that is constantly open and shut through the evening and started again at 5.30am this causes the building infrastructure and bed to vibrate and make a noise similar to weights being drops from a height! Very hard to sleep! Great location and ok for a 1 night. Goat kitchen adjacent for bar drinks and food in the town. Use church carpark for parking free 8pm to 8am so you need to buy a ticket AM if hanging around simple easy walk to get to and fro.
- Ellie (5/5): - Friendly staff, room was clean with a kettle and tv provided. When I booked this property I knew there could be some noise downstairs due to the accommodation being above a pub, however I did not expect how loud it actually was. Doors banging continuously, hoovering and what seemed like barrels moving, noise did not stop until 12am. Due to having an event to attend the next morning very early, this was really disappointing!
If Gothic House is only having a “quiet time” from midnight, then this should be stated in the booking description or implement a quiet time, as this accommodation would not suit light sleepers.

- Virginia (5/5): -
- Nicola (5/5): Good enough stay, amazing location - It's in a great location and fine for a short stay. There is no fridge, and the place is pretty small.
- Joanne (9/5): Fantastic hotel - We stayed here as we were visiting Hever Castle. Great location, lots of amenities nearby. The room was clean and had everything we needed. There were wine and prosecco glasses which was a nice touch One of the bedframes was very squeaky, could do with being looked at
- Linda (8/5): Great Place to Stay - The host and his staff were so friendly and welcoming. The room was comfortable and well stocked with tea and coffee. The breakfast was superb and the location was perfect. The only slight issue was that the shower was a bit small, I was fine but my husband is a big man and it was a squeeze for him. Having said that we would certainly stay here again.
- Nadia (7/5): Did the job! - Good location for the wedding we were attending and nice bar underneath. Staff are super friendly and had a nice overall feel to it The room we stayed in was dated and a bit mouldy in the bathroom but we weren’t there long enough to worry.
- Philip Melhuish (9/5): Overnight in East Grinstead - Lovely location and building, excellent breakfast and with fab bank hols weather we ate on the roof terrace. Good room. Bed wasn't terrible, but a little uncomfortable for us. Others may disagree.
- Elizabeth (7/5): Excellent location and nice owners, but a bit no-frills. - The place was well located on the High Street, with a lovely view of the churchyard behind. It was generally quiet and had most of the facilities that we needed. The room was quite small and there was a bit of noise from the restaurant underneath closing up for the evening. There was a wardrobe but few other places to hang or put clothes. The carpet smelled a little and there was an iron but no ironing board available.
- Moira (8/5): - Loved the gothic church outside my window.
- James (9/5): -
- Michel (10/5): -
- Robert (9/5): Comfortable and friendly - Good location for touring the area.
- John (6/5): Okay but needs updating. - I only had a bed for the night, which was fine and comfortable. Room was a bit tatty and could do with a bit of loving care, but it was perfectly clean. Light wasn’t working in bathroom and ceiling was badly flaking. Light fixtures were broken in the bedroom and generally looked a bit dated and not well maintained. I did not have food, but the Goat is affiliated to it and the the breakfast looked to be good from reading the menu.
- jennifer (4/5): - Bar and restaurant area downstairs Mould on ceiling of bathroom. very uncomfortable bed. Smell of dirt and damp in room.
- Raffaella (8/5): Very good -
- Ana (10/5): I will be back! - The best Turkish eggs! Great customer services. Excellent location! It met my expectations!
- Chris (8/5): Very good -
- Mike (10/5): New find - It was a surprise-a really good experience, close to work, definitely stay again!
- David (7/5): Good -
- Jane (7/5): Good -
- Michael (10/5): Exceptional - Host was very welcoming and showed me to room which was so lovely, overlooking the church, bed was super comfy and lot of effort had gone to make the room lovely and cosy
Excellent
- Catfoley (9/5): Superb -
- Janki (10/5): Lovely stay in East Grinstead! - Thank you, we really enjoyed out stay. Great place, location and staff. The bed is wonderful!
The room just needs a little maintenance, the curtain poles etc. Just a general fix up here and there to make it A+++.
Thanks again and all the best!
- Dylan (8/5): Very good -
- Clifford (8/5): Pleasant and comfortable. Lovely old building. Breakfast in the Goat was good. - Location was perfect for our stay. Sadly there was not any milk available in the room or anywhere we had access to. Nowhere to hang a towel to dry.
- Graham (10/5): Exceptional -
- Dean (8/5): - Quick and easy check in. Good breakfast at additional cost. Deco needs updating and refresh
- Matthew (5/5): The room served it's purpose but we would not return - The Cromwell room was warm and cosy with a comfortable bed. There was a nice view overlooking the local church and surrounding grounds. The property was listed as Pet Friendly and Free Breakfast. Pets were banned from the breakfast area and was chargeable! Parking was an issue outside with one hour only chargeable parking and locally all over. Car parks are expensive and a long walk away. The tea cups were mismatched and stained.
- Chris (8/5): Charming boutique style stay in the heart of town with breakfast on a terrace - A charming and characterful building on the high street with stylish large rooms, near cafes and restaurants. Our bathroom was large with a big shower and lovely free standing roll-top bath. Despite being on the high street the double glazed windows kept it quiet.
The owner is relatively new and keen to expand and improve the venue, being an old building there are some areas of outstanding maintenance to catch up on . Memhet was friendly and helpful, we had a lovely breakfast on the terrace at the back which is a delightful place to eat overlooking the beautiful 18c church of St. swithuns. Being an old building there are some decorative issues to catch up with . If you are old or infirm there are a flight of stairs up to the rooms.
- Jackie (6/5): met my expectations and was very convenient for a one night stop over - Great location in the centre of East Grinstead. Friendly staff and a large room with a comfortable bed the room was rather tired , lots of damp marks on the bathroom ceiling and the carpet could have been better cleaned
- Serban (7/5): Good -
- Paul (9/5): Superb -
- Richard (9/5): Superb -
- Anthony (7/5): Overall okay but pretty noisy in late evening! - Bed was comfortable and shower was hot and powerful Main overhead light in bathroom didn’t work, nor did the shaver socket so couldn’t use electric toothbrush. Also, there was a lot of very loud banging of doors downstairs between about 9.30pm and 10.30 pm
- Susan (7/5): Fi e for the purpose - Rooms were comfortable but noisy til about modnight Noise, shower room basic
- Stephen (4/5): Not happy - Nothing Nothing parking, dogs aloud in rooms but not in bar area, no food after lunch, breakfast not served until 1000am with check out at 1100.
- CORAZON (10/5): - I truly enjoyed my three nights stay at The Gothic House. It is lovely and dainty, clean with comfortable bed/pillows. Unlike one review I read, I did not experience any in-shower hot water issues after I inquired about it.
- Mark (7/5): Okay for the price - The owner came and found us, as we were wandering around outside looking for the house, as it is quite difficult to notice in the dark. That was a really nice touch The twin beds were very old fashioned. The look of them fit the room and decor, but they were quite uncomfortable, and very noisy when you roll around in them. We only tried the one room of course, so I don't know how the others are. Don't come here expecting a newly built perfect, but maybe boring, hotel. It's not all doom and gloom. It is a very charming property, and the name itself tells you it is going to be old. The price fits what you get.
- Cameron (8/5): Very good -
- Darren (10/5): Exceptional -
- Burt (10/5): Exceptional - Lovely room and clean.....we found it very peaceful and enjoyed the church view..
- Sally (9/5): A peaceful and comfortable mid-week stay. - Host extremely kind and helpful.
The windows in our room are opposite beautiful ancient church - our stay felt more peaceful.
Parking very close was free on high
Street between 6pm to 8am. East Grinstead is
Husband said he had the best night’s sleep! 💤
Shame a neighbour kept slamming their back door around 10pm (hotelier informed
And responded to me
immediately).
- Graham (10/5): Exceptional -
- Paul (9/5): Superb - Great staff, very helpful at all times. Food was fabulous.
- Gabriella (9/5): Superb - It was in a beautiful part of the town, friendly and helpful staff, clean room and tasty breakfast. I didn’t find the bed comfortable and the Wi-Fi was very week.
- Lisa (10/5): Exceptional -
- Renáta (10/5): Kind and attentive staff, nice room and good location. Loved the bar downstairs. - Loved the local heritage style and the kind staff. It was a bit cold.
- Tianhong (8/5): Very good -
- Tianhong (8/5): Very good -
- Helen (6/5): Parking a real problem here - Room was very pleasant and comfortable but no hot water for a good shower, just luke warm. Parking was the biggest problem and we had to race out of bed to the car park before 8am to buy a ticket. Staff were not very friendly down in the cafe where you have to enter the property
- Sharon (9/5): A comfortable convenient dog friendly stay - It was clean, comfortable and a good location for a dog friendly stay! Staff were very friendly It was quite noisy until around 11.30/12pm clanking/banging etc…as well as a noisy radiator that I had to turn off to quieten but the room was a comfortable temperature so this wasn’t a problem.
Would’ve been nice to have a dog bowl in the room
- Edwards (10/5): Exceptional - Very relaxed stay at Gothic house staff amazing. very friendly, very helpful, will be going back in the summer.
- Kathleen (9/5): Superb - In the old town -
- Charles (8/5): Very good -
- Chris (1/5): Dirty hovel. - Nothing Filthy room, black mold in bathroom, owner doesn't answer phone to even get in. Had to wait in the pub across the road for half an hour to get access. Radiator in bathroom doesn't work so it's freezing. Utter rip off, not worth 20 quid a night let alone 100.
- Shirley (10/5): Outstanding Gothic guest house - The host was extremely charming and kind and couldn't do enough for us. There was nothing I didn't like apart from my mum booking a twin room as opposed to a double!
- Knicks (7/5): Lovely bath in a room with character after visiting Hever Castle. - Awesome bath in a warm room bursting with character. Lovely host.
Good location for pubs and shops. Our room was above the restaurant which was alittle noisy.
No drinking water provided in the room and it was advertised having a fridge which it didn’t.
- Sarah (6/5): Pleasant -
- Pauline (10/5): Fabulous Hotel - Great location. Stunning room. Friendly welcoming staff and very comfy bed.
- Sarah (8/5): Very good -
- Sarah (8/5): Very good -
- Doug (2/5): Very disparaging and way over priced. - Nothing Very basic, not maintained, dirty and musty. Far too expensive for what is offered.
- Elaine (5/5): Passable -
- Graham (9/5): Superb -
- Richard (9/5): Very comfortable and full of character. - Comfortable and spacious. Dog friendly too. Access door was a bit unreliable.
- Hughes (6/5): Very clean and comfortable and central. - Very central and close to the hospital which was primarily the reason we booked it. The staff are great, the room was clean and comfortable. The shower although a bit tight was lovely. The toilet wasn’t fixed to the floor properly and rocked when sitting on it. A bit disconcerting at first. And whoever/whatever is next door made an awful noise right up to 11 p.m. which is unfortunate but no fault of the hotel.
- Deimante (6/5): Pleasant - Town centre location Very small bathroom, lights flickering and some rubbish left in drawers. Plenty of dust under the bed and night tables . And not clear payment instructions on , stated no prepayment needed but they charge a card a few days after booking has been confirmed. There is no cancellation policy, if your plans change you will pay . Quite expensive for that size room without breakfast included.
- Steve (7/5): We like quirky! And that’s what we got! Good value! Only 3 rooms ! - Good location ! Nice staff! Good breakfast! Quirky room and well furnished in a Turkish way! Bed not overly comfortable! Plain glass in bathroom windows??
- Kim (8/5): Very good -
- Neil (8/5): - Generally a good experience, nice room etc.
Only criticism was finding it. A single door but entrance on the street but reception via the bar next door makes access confusing and difficult to spot from the road as you arrive in the car. There is no parking so it’s important to be able to see the place from the road before looking for parking that is close by.
- Sodilva (8/5): Very good -
- Philip (9/5): Superb -
- David (10/5): - Perfect location for E Grinstead - right in the centre of town but set back off the road so not at all noisy. Rooms are cosy, clean, comfortable and well fitted out. Vastly preferable to a chain hotel. Highly recommended.
- Graham (7/5): Good -
- John (8/5): Comfy four poster with a huge double bath. - Looks lovely and has plenty of character.
Excellent bath and decent sound proofing. Lovely host who also owns the bar/restaurant downstairs. The whole place will soon be reversed so we were told. Creaky bed and wobbly bathroom tiles.
Furniture looks in theme for the room but a bit impractical in comparison to more modern accommodation.
