Guest Reviews
- Iwanka (8/5): - Schöne Lage, gutes Essen, nettes und kompetentes Personal
- Tracy (9/5): Fabulous stay and would definitely stay again and recommend to others. - We liked everything about this hotel. Good size bedroom and bathroom. Great supply of toiletries, tea, coffee and biscuits in the room. Comfortable bed and well decorated room. The staff were fabulous and could not have been more accommodating. Great bar and restaurant, with a really lovely view. We felt the breakfast could have had better quality ingredients. It was fine, just not quite as good as other breakfasts we enjoyed during our stay in Scotland.

Klent tryck i duschen.
- Morf61612 (10/5): Simply spectacular! - What a truly exceptional hotel! The staff were fabulous, friendly and obviously a really strong team. The chef was outstanding and our room overlooking the river Dee was simply spectacular.
- X9525EKhelenm (10/5): A Wonderful Fishing Trip - The hotel is in a beautiful position with glorious views over the River Dee. The weather was fabulous and we enjoyed lunch and drinks out on the lovely terrace. Every single member of staff whom we encountered was friendly, helpful, efficient and cheerful. The management must be very proud of them. The food was good and breakfast in particular was excellent. We had a super bedroom, but next time we will book a room with a view. A FAB stay and we look forward to a return visit.
- Katherine (7/5): - Lovely property and setting, friendly staff. Was in the room above the entrance - struggled to sleep due to continuous banging throughout the night like furniture was being moved around downstairs till early hours of morning.
- Mike (10/5): Fantastic hotel, food and location - Perfect location by the bank of the river Dee. Excellent food and great service from all staff Nothing
- E4620AXandrewm (10/5): Will definitely return. - We have just returned from a great stay, helped by the wonderful weather!
The staff throughout were extremely friendly and professional with nothing being too much trouble, especially at breakfast.
The room was good, clean and well equipped.
Will certainly be back.

- Mascha (10/5): - De ligging aan de rivier. De stijl van het hotel vond ik erg leuk, vrolijk ook. De lakens van het bed waren heerlijk, dit is niet iets wat je normaal gesproken benoemd, maar het viel echt op. Niets

- Anke (9/5): Comfy beds and fine food - Very good food at the dinner. I liked the non alcoholic wine, especially in fine restaurants I miss them most of the times.
The bed was very comfortable.
The sound of the river was comforting. The room was a bit noisy or maybe the neighbours were it.

- Carole (10/5): Beautiful location - Amazing location. Very comfortable rooms
- Richard (10/5): Outstanding in every aspect. - All food was exceptional and the Location outstanding scenery with Rivers ,Woodlands and Hillside view points a few miles south.
All of the staff were incredibly dressed smart waistcoat outfits. Perfect. The drive is narrow for cars plus pedestrians a foot path in the future may be a thing to consider to prevent guests walking on wet ground as cars pass. No Toilet brushes, awlful things but can be a necessity
- Davidson (10/5): -
- Mary (7/5): - Location Room small with only window by entrance so no privacy and no blind
Lots of dust and cobwebs
- William (10/5): The hotel is a high quality and we enjoyed ourselves. - Very goox There is no lift and my wife is disabled, so it was difficult getting up to the room
- Keith (8/5): Great location for a short break - Well staffed and very professional and friendly
- martin (10/5): Perfect getaway to contemplate life - Perfect. Clean. Warm and Friendly
- Martin (10/5): Refreshing & relaxing 5 star Scotland - A world-class unique location run by youthful, caring & attentive staff who love life. n/a
- Scott (10/5): -
- Eddie (9/5): -
- Kirsten (10/5): Stunning hotel, stunning location. - Our stunning room had its own conservatory! Breakfast was exceptional. Nothing!
- Alison (8/5): Excellent stay - Beautiful hotel in an excellent location. Breakfast and dinner were excellent with lots of choice. The room was clean and very well presented, lots of space, tea and coffee making supplies provided as well as water. Bed was small for the size of the room. Room was very hot but that was probably down to the random 19 degree weather in April and the heating being set for normal April weather!
- Helloteeth (10/5): A Wonderful One‑Night Stay at Banchory Lodge Hotel - A Wonderful One‑Night Stay at Banchory Lodge Hotel
I stayed at Banchory Lodge Hotel for one night and it turned out to be exactly the kind of relaxing escape I was hoping for. The setting alone makes an impression — right on the banks of the River Dee, with that peaceful, wooded landscape that instantly slows your pace.
Dinner and drinks were excellent. The cocktails were properly made (no shortcuts, no sugary nonsense), and the food matched the setting: well‑executed, flavourful, and clearly using good local produce. It felt unpretentious but still special.
The rooms were spacious and thoughtfully equipped, with everything you actually want during a short stay: tea and coffee, bottled water, chocolate caramel biscuits, a powerful shower, and a big comfortable bed. It’s the kind of room where you drop your bag and immediately feel settled.
The next morning’s walk along the River Dee was beautiful, especially with the early light coming through the trees. It’s one of those locations where you don’t need to plan anything — just step outside and enjoy it.
Overall, Banchory Lodge delivers exactly what a countryside hotel should: comfort, good food and drink, and a setting that does half the work for you. I’d happily stay again.
- Scott (3/5): BANCHORY LODGE: A Bittersweet Hodge Podge. - The staff were very friendly, the room was clean and the overall décor nice enough. The setting by the River Dee also appealling. There was VERY limited disabled access throughout the hotel, which includes lack of disabled access to the rooms we stayed in. The breakfast selection was also very limited and basic at the cold buffet, while the hot breakfast was sub-standard at best and certainly not of a quality befitting a 4 Star hotel rating. There were no coffee options at breakfast outside of bog-standard filter coffee either. No chance of a latte or a cappuccino, which should be standard in this Barista day and age.
- Christiane (10/5): Perfekt! - Unser Urlaub war rundum perfekt, vielen Dank an das Team vom Hotel!
- Biswajit (1/5): Unimpressed! Definitely not for families or staying with pets - The location of the property was idyllic and probably had some potential in the past before it lost its character (which includes the general lack of warmth and hospitality amongst its staff) and its “periodic” charm. The dinner menu at the restaurant was good. Poor staff service and lack of hospitality. Inconsistent experience as a dog owner - the hotel claims to be dog friendly but staff behaviour and policies seemed otherwise. On one night we were allowed to dine with our furry friend in the main restaurant and the next morning we were rudely interrupted during our breakfast and asked to move to the bar area by one senior staff member who seemed determined to find every rule in the book to move us during our meal (not to mention the lack of empathy that we have a 2 year old and were sitting beside our family friends).
Definitely, not ideal for families with young children as there was a general lack of empathy in many hotel staff members (the restaurant and bar staff were exceptions though). The breakfast menu was also less than ordinary so we didn’t miss much in the end.
Families with pets, please don’t be fooled.
- Brian (9/5): Our two day stay was comfortable, relaxing and enjoyable. - The room was clean and comfortable, the menu for breakfast and dinner was great. However, the hotel service was simply excellent. Friendly, supportive, with a lot of care. And our doggie was made most welcome
- Richard (9/5): -
- Susan (10/5): One night stay - A very Friendly welcome from staff , the room was clean and had good facilities. High end toiletries and towels were a great touch. The Bed was comfortable and nice linen No easy accessible sockets next to bed , altho plenty in the room itself.
I like a dark room to sleep in and there was alot of light came in round the door frame from the light on in the hallway , disrupting my sleep.
- Anna (9/5): - Beautiful location, helpful and friendly staff, lovely rooms.
- Michael (7/5): - location price
- HaroldW824 (10/5): 100% Recommend Dog Friendly - Booked this last minute. Wonderfull hotel and location. Love the decor in public areas. The room was perfect. Large, mint bathroom with everything spotless clean. The bar area is lovely, as is the area outside. About 10 min easy walk to the main shops. Will be back 100%. We had our springer spaniel with us and he loved it too!
- Harold (10/5): Dog friendly lovely retreat. - Lovely setting by River Dee, beautiful decor, staff excellent service and attentative. Room and bathroom spotless clean. Our Springer loved it too 😊🐶 Recommend 100% We’ll defo return. Loved everything
- MICHAEL (9/5): Very comfortable - Setting service all good Nothing to fault
- MICHAEL (9/5): Excellent beautiful setting excellent service - Setting, character and charm of the buildings. Could not find faults
- elaine (8/5): -
- Alison (9/5): - Beautiful location, friendly staff, interior decoration is on point and great breakfast. The manager welcomed each and every guest at breakfast and gave us a window table with fantastic view.
- Colin (10/5): Most enjoyable stay. - Loved the aspect of the property and friedlyness of all the staff. The meals I had were also excellent. As an aquantance from London I met at the hotel said to me, !I feel like lottery winner staying here! There was nothing that I could fault.
- Diane (9/5): -
- Bernard (9/5): Excellent stay in the Scottish Countryside - Great facilities, staff and food
- Iain (9/5): -
- IrishEyesSmile (8/5): Good Food In A Lovely Setting - We always enjoy our visits to Banchory Lodge for a bar meal and since our last visit the menu has changed so we welcomed some new choices.. Slightly surprised by the price increase in some things, £22 for a burger we felt expensive especially when The Flying Stag within the Fife in Braemar is on par and £3 cheaper. The “crispy”
chicken wings were absolutely drenched in sauce and while not what I expected were tasty (but messy!) Shrimp starter yummy, risotto delicious and burger great. Nice staff and prompt service.
- Alison (10/5): Highly recommended. Very dog friendly - we will definitely return. Already recommended to family for their stay - Lovely hotel. Very nice decor. Excellent food. Staff really go above and beyond. Great peaceful setting next to the river Nothing
- Harry (9/5): -
- Helen (7/5): Comfortable luxury stay with friendly staff - Location and decor was fab, the staff were so kind and friendly Scottie Breakfast was poorly cooked over done and dry items. No small fridge in room either!
- crawfordh2022 (10/5): Another excellent stay - Have just spent a five day stay here at Banchory Lodge on business & what a pleasure it has been.
The hotel is splendid, warm and friendly.
All the staff make you feel so welcome, nothing is ever a problem.
The rooms are so comfortable and spotlessly clean.
The food is 1st class and the new evening menu is delicious.
Would highly recommend this place.
Thanks to all the staff for making our stay so good.

- Jane (8/5): Great location. - A great hotel situated by the river Dee. Great food. Comfortable bed, large room.
Close to many walks. The windows rattle very loudly in the wind at night. Shower could have been more consistent.

- Stephen (10/5): - Stunning location and really friendly staff. Great food. Fantastic Scottish breakfast. Thought the food was a tiny bit expensive but I'm used to staying in Premier Inns so that's fair enough
- Carol (9/5): Location suited us - Location N/A
- sydney (9/5): Fantastic short stay for us. - Beautiful location on the river Dee. Room is one of the best and most comfortable I have stayed in with a beautiful bathroom and a view of the river
Staff were all very professional, helpful and well mannered
- Stuart (8/5): Lovely short stay. - Superb location with views and access to the river from the room. Pillows could be improved.
- Amariese (10/5): -
- peter (9/5): -
- John Martin (5/5): Fair - but would I pay the money and go back , no. - I work in Banchory regularly and it’s a hotel that I’ve ate in before but never stayed so it was a nice escape for us for the night. Beautiful view but there’s definitely some things that’s I believe that the hotel can learn from, I just feel it was trying to hard and missing some of the basics. - If you have paid for a king room. The car parking spaces at the front of the property just infront of the outside seated area should be designated spots for these rooms only. It’s just that added touch.
- we stayed in room 4 , now I am 6FT 5 and you have a swinging light in the middle of the room at chest height , when your getting up middle of the night for the toilet , banged my head off this a few times.
The Restaurant - Menu is very poor and just over complicated. Yes the food is nice but not a lot on there. We are in Scotland and right in the river Tay , a can’t believe there is not a fresh salmon option on there. Would have been lovely to have had knowing your eating fresh fish caught on the same river you can see from the hotel. The breakfast menu , poached eggs , , with salmon , I had to ask for sourdough with the scrambled eggs and salmon and the salmon portion is terrible.
When you pay for King Size Room , and breakfast , I could have went to Harry Gows on the Main Street , paid less and had more quantity. Just very basic. To the tourists that come put some haggis on there , but spoke to a few people that were Scottish and they were disappointed also.
One more thing I would point out , please for your guests in the future put a full length mirror in the bedroom , especially for the women out there. They always live looking at their outfits in full and that’s not an option.
Beds are hard and not soft , a mean a wouldn’t say it was sleeping on concrete but for an establishment like yourselves , a believe yous can do a lot better.
Staff were 10/10 and couldn’t fault them.
Tell me something before I go ,
When was the last time you paid £44 for two fish and chips. That’s a rip off.
£15 max
So listen we enjoyed getting away from home but all the small things you can do better with , why do yous not link up with a local baker and put some fresh tablet in the room. Couple Carmel wafers , it’s pure lazy and just old fashioned.

- Celia (9/5): We had a wonderful comfortable stay. Other than the stairs in the main building we had a wonderful comfortable stay - The hotel is beautifully situated on the river. The room was so lovely and having a walk in shower such an advantage. Room 16 which has a view over the river. The refreshments in the room had such a great choice. Cafetière, teapot and plenty of tea/coffee/hot chocolate. The breakfast was wonderful. Freshly made which we love. Such lovely friendly staff too. We recommend this hotel. The only drawback was the number of stairs. If you have any physical disability/weakness it’s a disadvantage staying in the main building. No lift:-(
- Colin (9/5): - Great setting and escape from the city only 15 miles away
- Katherine (10/5): We had a fabulous overnight stay. Great location, staff were so helpful, dinner and breakfast were great. - We had a fabulous overnight stay. Great location, staff were so helpful, dinner and breakfast were great. Nothing at all.
- ianmC5138IB (8/5): Good hotel but sort the menu - Overall the hotel was fantastic. I have stayed here numerous times over the last few years. The staff are great. Very helpful and professional. They are an asset to the hotel
I have 2 criticisms. Firstly, the menu has not changed in years and I found the selection to be very pretentious. A menu revamp is certainly needed. Next time I stay, ill be eating elsewhere.
My second criticism is that you now have a service charge added to the bill. This is not advertised anywhere and if I had not checked the bill, I would not have noticed.
Don't end up like American restaurants with this type of charge.
I was advised that the service charge could be removed but it does make you feel uncomfortable asking to do this.
I always tip when eating in restaurants when the service is good but in this case, I felt that the service charge was enough.
- Elaine (9/5): Thoroughly enjoyable stay and the food was really nice. - The rooms were lovely, staff very friendly and location great. The hotel bar prices were quite high but I suppose in keeping with the location and surroundings.
- John (9/5): A comfortable stay in outstanding surroundings - The hotel has a beautiful location alongside the River Dee. It is an old country-style hotel, with no elevator and may pose some challenges for those who are physically challenged. The friendliness and helpfulness of the staff was outstanding. Plenty of space for parking and the interior was tastefully decorated and warm. Food, other than breakfast, in the restaurant was well prepared and tasted good. Housekeeping was excellent and our room was refreshed daily. I would definitely stay here again. Getting luggage up the staircase was a little challenging - we don't travel light. However, there were offers to help us with this if we needed. The room was spacious with great views of the river, but at times it was too warm and there was no way to regulate the heat. Opening a window was the only option, but as the weather was rainy this wasn't always practical or easily managed. We only went down for breakfast once and I thought the "Scottie" - a form of full-Scottish breakfast - was a little disappointing: a small, single rasher of bacon, a fried egg that looked as though it has been reheated in a microwave, and a potato pancake that was like cardboard and almost inedible. It just lacked the freshness and "just prepared" presentation I was expecting. The haggis and black pudding were excellent though, as was the baked beans.
- John (10/5): It’s a must! - What a place. It’s a must visit if you get the chance!
My room was amazing and the food in the restaurant for breakfast and dinner was brilliant. No complaints
- Neal (10/5): Lovely relaxing stay, great service - Lovely setting, wonderful food and very friendly staff
- Jennifer (9/5): Enjoyable stay - Lovely meal. Friendly staff. Location was very pretty
- Sarah (4/5): Disappointing - On a positive note, Kevin, our breakfast waiter, was a lovely chap and went above and beyond to make our stay enjoyable. We booked a Deluxe King Room with terrace but were given a room with only a standard double bed. The terrace was scruffy and poorly maintained, and the river view was largely blocked by chimneys from an outdoor catering hut.
There were several maintenance and cleanliness issues: the bedroom floor was dirty, the toilet seat was loose, the toilet was very slow to refill, the shower pressure was poor, and the lounge curtain lining was disintegrating. Privacy was also affected, as the ladies’ outdoor toilets were clearly visible from the corridor window. At breakfast, a fork provided was dirty.
Overall, the room did not match the description or expectations for a deluxe category.
