Guest Reviews
- Sui Man (10/5): - Very kind grandma taking care of you, serving food, making coffee and taking you to the train station. Dinner is amazing. Bamboo from high mountain and steak from cow that was fed by apple! Onsen is clean.
- Andrea (10/5): - Ich habe mich sehr wohl gefühlt.
- Catherine (9/5): All out needs were taken care off, great value and an authentic Japanese Ryokan experience. - Very friendly staff who are most welcoming.
- Annabelle (9/5): -
- Sim Siong (10/5): Excellent place for traditional ryokan experience - The host is really friendly! The onsen is nice! Room is very traditional. Food is superb.
- Maite (10/5): Incredible place in Yudanaka, with its own onsen, amazing staff and great food. - Amazing service: even though the staff did not speak much English, they went out of their way to make us feel welcome and comfortable. The food was incredible, too. There was nothing I didn’t like.,

- Grace (10/5): Really enjoyed my stay. Definitely will come back again! - This family run hotel was great. Despite the building being historically old, the facilities and my room were very clean and stocked with all the essentials. My room was very comfortable as well. The staff was what made my stay amazing though; they were extremely kind and did their best to make me feel welcome. A bonus is that they can also speak some English! The breakfast and dinner were amazing. Everything was cooked well and tasted delicious!
- Hunter (10/5): Family friendly, authentic food, exceptional service. - Wonderful experience, the land lady picked us up with no notice from Yudanaka station within 10 minutes of our arrival (notice reccomended, as taxis and buses are not frequent). The meals were outstanding and very personable. We stayed here with our 6mo, very family friendly. She even let us have a private bath at one of the two onsens within the ryokan. Also provided transportation to the snow monkey park! I didn't realize you do not have access to the main baths within Shibu Onsen, but was a non issue for us, as it was convenient to go to the two available within the ryokan while one of us stayed back with the baby.
- Bruno (10/5): - Host, meals, location, onsen
- Michael (10/5): Amazing ryokan stay - The ryokan host is lovely. She is so helpful and speaks reasonably good English. The room is quite comfortable and two lovely onsens in the property with access to two other public ones outside the property. Food was amazing! Host arranged drop off at station post stay. If you enjoy manga, they have over 4000! Make sure you have cash to pay the city taxes. No ability to pay with cards or IC.

- wendy (9/5): we would like to return the host was warm and friendly like being looked after by a grandparent - wonderful cultural experience, to get the best experience embrace and respect the culture of this onsen. location was lovely in a traditional setting. Breakfast is a great experience and have open minded children to try the delicacies here. our room was lovely and spacious but we got a smell of sulphur accumulating overnight from natural sources. Would be best to leave the room open at night.
- Chaudhary (10/5): - Great service, location, facilities, comfort Unfortunately no access to historic 9 onsens through this location
- Joshua (10/5): -
- Marija (10/5): I’m already planning another trip back to Japan, and this place is on my list for a return visit💕 - Lovely location, just a few minutes walking from all the sights of the surrounding area. Super cozy, very homey feeling.
The dinner and breakfast were some of the most delicious food I’ve had in Japan, and I’d rate the hospitality 12 out of 10 if I could. The proprietor gave me a ride up to the snow monkey park as well, which was a lifesaver due to the heavy snow.
The onsen facilities were simple but well equipped, and I felt extremely relaxed during my stay. Incredible value for money. Everything was perfect.
- Elizabeth (10/5): Fantastic! Stay here! - FANTASTIC! Look no further. The place is authentic and boutique Japanese and the lady who runs it is so generous and wonderful. So authentic and boutique compared the major ryokens up the street you would need to pay 3x for. Helpful tips: Andai Onsen is your bus stop for this. The owner kindly offered to drive us to the Snow Monkeys AND to the train station when we left. Saying thank you in Japanese and being appreciative goes a long way. Note this place does not have keys to the 8 town onsens, but the onsens it does have are amazing and I think the 8 onsen pilgrimage is overrated. Do you really want to just check off onsens with other tourists when you can be in a nice one alone or with just your family? Nothing.
- ziosi (10/5): Perfetto Onsen - Tutto
- Ye Chan (10/5): -
- Ng (10/5): This place inked a memory for our family - The host is exceptional.
- Michael (10/5): Highly recommend - The host was amazing and her cooking was exceptional. Really enjoyed her Japanese explanations of breakfast items, how to use onsen, robes etc -
- Anna (10/5): - Friendly owner. She gave us a lift to the park and to the train station. Hot spring bath inside hotel and traditional Japanese breakfast were excelent
- Oscar (10/5): Amazing and wonderful! - The staff were kind and thoughtful.
- Kirsty (10/5): The breakfast was so traditional and amazing - Perfect location
- julia (10/5): - We stayed overnight as a group and felt very comfortable. We can recommend this hotel to everyone! The hosts were very friendly and accommodating. They picked us up from the train station and took us back there when we left. Breakfast and dinner were included in the stay. The food was excellent. Local, fresh dishes were served. The hotel is family-run and the son of the family is a trained chef. His dishes were delicious, and you could taste his years of cooking experience.
The onsen seemed newly renovated and was very relaxing.
Thank you for this wonderful stay! It was a highlight of our trip to Japan.
- Annie (10/5): - The staff were so nice and accommodating. Dinner and breakfast were amazing! A little far from Yudanaka station if that's where you're coming in from.

- Travis (10/5): Our favorite place that we stayed during our family trip to Japan - Wonderful family run Ryokan. The onsen was amazing and was a perfect size!
- Pascale (10/5): Cozy Japanese experience - Amazing Japanese experience. The host is very helpful and kind. The place is just what we needed, cozy and homey. The onsen were great and we got to experience the Yuzu bath at the winter solstice.
- Luca (10/5): -
- David (10/5): Make it a trip of a lifetime to stay here. - Words cannot say now much we enjoyed staying at the Andaijan. The staff were just fantastic. The food was served in a different room each day which was fantastic and the different types of Japanese of food each meal was great.
The lady owner drove us to the Monkey Park and to the train station. We would stay again.
The Spar in the hotel was so warm and relaxing. Nothing
- Justin (10/5): Wife and I had a once in a lifetime stay at a beautiful Ryokan! - Hosts were incredible! The place is very beautiful and very clean. It's a unique building and it was fun just navigating around. The effort put into making us feel welcome and appreciated did not go unnoticed!
Everything felt well explained despite the language barrier. They had a nice packet of information to go by as well. Any real fears I had about navigating the cultural and language differences vanished quickly as I realized how much it felt like a home away from home. They were personally interested in us and went above and beyond to make sure we had everything we needed!
- Alex (10/5): - Absolutely stunning place with a very kind and helpful host. The rooms had a traditional Japanese layout, the food was like from a movie (or anime), we got complimentary yukata, and the onsen were amazing. (There are two in the hotel which swap between genders after dinner and breakfast.) I can really recommend this place! For those coming to try the 9 shibu baths, this hotel does not have access to them as it is not technically in the old town area. It does have access to two other bathhouses. But this is not important unless you really care about those onsen. (You can still get the stamps, and use the free footbaths).
Alles Bestens
- Rosemary (10/5): - This was our favourite night in Japan so far. A really comfortable room, so nice to go to the onsen after arriving, and an absolutely delicious dinner. The staff were also wonderful and very accommodating. We would absolutely stay here again and recommend to friends.
Niks, alles was uitstekend.
- Luca (9/5): Superb - An authentic onsen experience in a traditional Ryokan.
Both traditional dinner and breakfast were awesome.
The old owner was super helpful and can speak a decent English. She drove me to the monkey park and back to the train station..
The onsen was small but functional and relaxing.
The village is traditional and really beautiful. It is worth to make s tour around the riokan. - there is not an open-bath but only two indoor onsen
- although positioned at the border within Shibu onsen and Andai onsen, Andaikan is associated to Andai onsen, therefore no key to access to the 9 public baths of Shibu onsen
- Angeline (10/5): A pleasant stay. The dinner and breakfast was the highlight! - The owner was kind & generous. She gave us two packets of crackers for our trip to Hakuba. She welcome us with hot yummy food though we were half an hour late for check in. I can’t unlock the door through the gap between the woods.
- Jerene (9/5): We like this place and will come back again. - Host is very friendly. Food is good. She explained to us patiently. Price is very reasonable. None
- Joana (10/5): Exceptional -
- Lucie (10/5): The most amazing ryokan in Japan! - This was the best ryokan we have ever stayed at. The host was so nice and the food was AMAZING! The room was huge and very authentic. Lovely timber finishes and fantastic onsen! Nothing at all
- Jason (10/5): Amazing and authentic - The host was amazing and it was the most traditional Japanese place that we stayed In 2 weeks
- Lyudmyla (10/5): Exceptional - First time I was hosted in traditional Japanese ryokan with traditional food .And it was amazing ,food was so delicious and variety ,kimano was so soft and comfortable .My room has private washroom .Onsen was great with good hot temperature helps me relax my back .Staff was very polite and helpful .I liked everything about my stay .
- Brause (10/5): Exceptional -
- S. (7/5): Good - Lovely traditional Japanese aesthetic. Large room. Friendly staff.
Breakfast was delicious and the owner wrapped up left overs for me. Was charged extra Y1900 and still not sure why but didn't want to argue with owner.
- Lucinda (10/5): Exceptional -
- Clara (9/5): Superb -
- Chen (10/5): Exceptional - The lady staff at the place was very attentive and super sweet, always apologising for her English. The rooms are just what you would expect of Japanese rooms. My only small little complaint is the bathrooms are cold. The main room is all good. I booked half board and the kaiseki meal was worth the experience. Just be prepared to sit on the floor for the entire meal.
- Theresa (10/5): Loved everything about our stay at Andaikan, it was our favorite in Japan! - We loved everything about Andaikan, it was our favorite stay in Japan. The facilities are gorgeous, the food was incredible, the host is so lovely and accommodating. An amazing stay!
- Anonymous (10/5): Good experience in a family style ryokan - This is a family run ryokan (I should be correct). Staff are very friendly and hospitable. Host is very motherly and able to speak adequate English. Information about the onsen, meals etc were explained clearly. Host drove another guest and myself to the Snow Monkey Park.
The property is about 2 km from Yudanaka Train Station. Walking here is fine but not during winter. I had to drag my 27" luggage through certain section with snow. Probably better to take the bus from Yudanaka Station to the bus stop before the stop at Shibu Onsen. If not just stop at Shibu onsen and walk in the reverse direction. Either way, it's just a short walk.
I arrived slightly after 2 pm and host allowed me to check-in. This is the only second property that allowed me to check-in before the stipulated time.
My room is cosy, homey and comes with an attached toilet. Very comfortable tatami to sleep on. Onsen is great. Wifi connection is good. Sufficient power outlet to charge devices. Breakfast and dinner were great. Worth paying for the half board.
Experience is very positive.
- Niek (10/5): Traditional ryokan and experience. - Very nice and cosy homestay. You actually stay with the family and they are so nice and helpful. Great location for visiting the snow monkeys and onsen (key not included). We also went skiing for one day. Ski trip is doable (45 min bus trip) but would recommend an additional stay at a place in the ski area. The place is very traditional which we liked very much. The lady is the sweetest person.
- Tejaswi (10/5): Exceptional - Great
- Wanhua (10/5): Charming Ryokan - The ryokan was recently rennovated so had all the modern amenities (toilets, many powerful heaters etc) while still keeping the tradition charm. 2 internal onsens meant it was convenient to go for a soak any time. The inn owner was super helpful and patient despite some language difficulties. The inn itself is located 3 mins walk from the bus stop so getting to and fro wasn't a challenge. The inn owner also gave us a lift to the snow monkey park and to the train station. Would love to return. Nothing.
- Bernard (9/5): A place to feel relaxed and rejuvenate. - Good food, location, facilities, Onsen & friendly host. None
- Rachel (10/5): Exceptional -
- Amy (10/5): Andaikan ensured that my stay near Shibu Onsen was memorable. Book a stay! - I greatly appreciated the hosts' service and care with the dinner. She helped me understand each of the food and was very attentive in making sure that my needs were met. I appreciated the yukata - haven't felt as pretty since! N/A
- Pasqual (10/5): Exceptional - Sweet staff, warm welcoming, comfortable room, enjoyable atmosphere and onsen.
They even had my name written on a board on my check in day!!! Everything was perfect!
- Jie (8/5): Good relaxing time in there . - Great location and easy access by bus.
The owner drove us to Monkey park and the train station.
Great breakfast. No
- Meg (10/5): Exceptional -
- Phoebe (10/5): Wonderful experience - Lovely hostess! She even drove us to the station. The breakfast was delicious and abundant. The onsen very nice and the room spotless. Had a rustic charm to everything. Highly recommend! Nothing
- Kateřina (9/5): Great place to stay - We had a great time, the staff was very kind and helpful, we enjoyed the onsen and dinner was amazing! It was a great opportunity for us to experience more Japanese style accommodation.
- Emily (10/5): Heartwarming experience of a traditional Japanese ryokan - This was an incredible experience! The building and room was decorated beautifully, the futons were very comfortable and we really enjoyed the onsen. The breakfast was delicious (best miso soup!) and the host was super lovely! She was super kind to help plan our travels to the snow monkey park and Yudanaka station and even offered us a ride (extremely grateful)! She also recommended dinner options as we arrived late to check-in. The stay felt wholesome and caring - many small details that words cannot convey. -
- David (10/5): Exceptional -
- Elizabeth (8/5): Excellent host, enjoyable traditional rokan experience, fascinating village. - Excellent host who was so helpful, provided the most wonderful evening meal, gave us a lift to the monkey park and the station and made really good recommendations. We really enjoyed our stay.
- Gay (10/5): Wonderful place, amazing host. amazing price - My host was the kindest, most helpful person I met. The room was beautiful and historic, and the amenities were amazing. The onsen was clean and enjoyable. The breakfast was fantastic and very tasty. I loved this place and will revisit again. i loved everything
- Adrian (10/5): Great hosts and traditional building - I was able to stay here 5 years ago, and coming back was one of the main reasons behind my return trip to Japan. The building has an amazing traditional feel to it, the meals are both delicious and plentiful, and above all, the hostess kindness really makes you feel at home. They have two indoor onsens that rotate through the day between men and women, and the facilities have been renovated (I loved the new wood panels in one of the baths). A great experience that I will definetly try to repeat one day :) Nothing.
- Antony (9/5): Very nice, relaxing counterpoint to the hustle of Tokyo with traditional Japanese hospitality - Very kind host. She gave us a lift to the monkey park and another to the train station at the end of the stay.
She Also let us know when the onsen would be free for us to use privately as a family to give our preschool son a wash! It’s nice that the 2 baths swop between male and female for half of each day, so that clients can experience both.
Breakfast also a very tasty and generous set. It’s a shame that they don’t have the key to the 9 onsen huts. However this was very clear in the advertising and their own 2 baths are nice.
- Koh (8/5): Very good - The hostess was very nice and picked us up at yudanaka station and dropped us at the snow monkey trail to save time. Dinner and breakfast were specially prepared and delicious, with rare horse 🐎 meat sashimi. The onsen could be made adjustable for lower temperatures for visitors if possible. Be prepared to climb stairs.
- Roy (10/5): Outstanding, culturally unique and historic hot springs town, and near Jigoku-dani snow monkey park - The breakfasts and dinners were outstanding, varied and ample. Oiishi in Japanese - tasty! The neighborhood in Shibu Onsen was very charming, quiet and safe. The two onsen (hot tubs) in our building were terrific. Parking in free lot less than a half block away for our rental car was also very convenient. The location, close to the snow monkeys in their own hot tub, couldn't be better. Hot lattes from the expresso machine in the lobby was very much appreciated, especially for early risers like me.
- Grace (7/5): The food and staff (a one woman show) were exceptional - The staff person was very hospitable and helpful. The included breakfast and add on dinner (definitely recommend) were very high quality and made the rate an exceptional deal. Room size was very large. The onsen water was scalding hot so we were not able to use it. It is an older building so don’t expect everything to look pristine (but it is clean)
- Marie (10/5): Perfect location, and perfect host! - The room was large and spacious, very clean, and futons so comfortable to sleep on. Room was very warm as temperatures were freezing outside! The onsen was lovely and relaxing.
Was in a great position to visit the monkey park and the lady that runs it was wonderful, and food was delicious. The only thing I didn’t like was I had to leave!
- Clifford (10/5): Exceptional -
- Jennifer (10/5): A wonderful family experience in a traditional ryokan with amazing food - The ryokan was beautiful - set in a very old and interesting building with 2 baths and surrounded by many public baths. The owner was very kind to us and prepared us absolutely beautiful meals. Our room was large and cosy with plenty of space to spread out. Would highly recommend staying at this property. Nothing - everything was perfect
- Yan (10/5): Exceptional -
- Amanda (10/5): Exceptional - Friendly host. Very nice
- Morgan (9/5): Superb - A nice vintage feeling setting.
We chose to not ask for a pick up from the train station so we could walk over and see the town a little bit. Outside, my name was written on a chalkboard which was a nice touch.
The owner greeted us in the lobby and helped carry our bags up to our room. It was everything I hoped for with a Kotatsu and futon beds. The owner also brought us an assortment of ladies yukata for me and her largest yukata for my husband. Our room had a private toilet. There is a communal space to refill your hot water carafe.
The Ryokan just has a lovely space. The small bridge leading to one of the baths. The art on the walls and decorations in the acoves. Just a fantastic space with a charm from another era.
We had a lovely and gigantic spread for dinner. There were so many fantastic flavors. Adventurous eaters will have a great time. Mushrooms, pickles, fish, and horse were some of the standout parts.
After, with a light snow falling, we went on a stroll in the night. We wore the Geta (traditional sandals) with the yukata and borrowed umbrellas. We enjoyed the onsen baths after our return.
The breakfast was another impressive spread. As an American, it was a lot of food! Tofu, fish, egg, salad, rice, pickles. The perfect meal before a nice hike.
The Owner speaks English, and she checked in with us during our stay. She offered to give us a ride up to the to trailhead for the Snow Monkies after taking another guest to the station. We happily accepted. In case anyone thinks that they would need to hike with their rolling luggage, you can check your bags at the trailhead.
- Loziobart (9/5): Superb -
