Guest Reviews
- Robert (10/5): - The music, in such a cosy and intimate setting, was outstanding. The musician, Neal McDaniel, was very talented. All this was at no extra cost, although most guests left a gratuity.
- Dan (10/5): - Good
- Paul (2/5): - We couldn't stay once we walked through the building to our room. It smelled absolutely awful. Worse than a barn or porta potty. I actually gagged. We left for a bit, totally distraught because we had nowhere else to go and had already been charged for the room. But we decided to go back and returned our key and left. There was no possible way we could have stomached a night there. Thankfully we had a friend in the area that found us a room with a family member. DO NOT STAY THERE. Grossest place ever
- Wayne (10/5): - This is an older property, but we’ll taken care of. The staff and owners were fantastic, and the entertainment they provide was authentic in a very intimate setting. Definitely recommend this.
- Monique (10/5): Great place and amazing courteous staff - This Inn/Cabin/Hotel is a great spot to stay if you're touring the Cape Breton Island. We were visiting the western area of the island (CB Highlands National Park nearest to Cheticamp) so this was a good and affordable place to stay while we were in this area. What we absolutely found amazing was the impeccable customer service of the staff. When we arrived, we were offered to stay in one of the cabin if we wanted to but chose instead to stay in a very quaint and comfortable room in the main lodge. Unfortunately, we soon found out that there was no hot water and it was already past midnight and the staff was away. Made one phone call and the owner was quick to come over, talk with us and fix the problem. There was a lot a hot water after his visit. Very interesting older gentleman to talk to. The room was extremely comfortable and we truly enjoyed our night. We will definitely be back to this place.
- Michael (6/5): - Accommodations were average, cabin shower needs attention.
- Emad (10/5): - The place was clean, still kept it’s rustic look. Taking a seat outside at night and watching the sparkling stars was great.
Waking up to Animals such as horses and Cows, was a beautiful experience.
Coffee and bread were fresh and waiting in the front desk.
Highly recommend.
- Robin (8/5): Great spot to get away! - My wife and I had a wonderful 3 night stay. Staff were very accommodating and friendly. The property which consists of 250 acres of farmland and forest is mostly open for your enjoyment. Looking out from our cabin porch we could see the horses and highland cattle grazing in a close by field. The animals are all healthy and happy looking. We took wonderful walks around the property daily and met lots of friendly CFA's along the way. The cabins are a bit dated but still comfortable. Cleanliness was on a par with other places we stayed this trip. Personally we thought it could be improved on. But early Sept is late in the season here so... also remember the cabins are used by fisherman often who are coming and going with all their gear. Every morning we could get coffee at the office by 7:30am. In the dining area you can also get breakfast and or dinner in the evening. I would recommend this place to anyone just looking to get away. We enjoyed our stay!
- Peggy (8/5): - Difficult to find. Remote poor road. Little signage to help you find your way. Dated.
Friendly efficient staff, food very good, entertainment very enjoyable and in spite of our comments, we very much enjoyed our stay.
- Aejeong (8/5): - Staff was kind and evrrything was good except one thing...the cabin I stayed in smelled a little. View around the cabin was great!
- Sandra (10/5): A very pleasant stay - We stayed only one night here. Although the property is a bit older the buildings appear well cared for and the setting is lovely. We had a very clean and comfortable room . The staff were friendly and helpful. We had a lovely meal in the dining room. All in all a very pleasant stay and we would recommend it.
- Maureen (2/5): - We were given the choice of rooms or cabins for the same price. There was no TV, alarm clocks, or phones in the cabins. There was rust in the shower tubs. It felt like living on a farm in the 1920's. It was not a good experience at all and do not know how this classed as a hotel. We could not wait to check out.
- Nancy (4/5): - We were placed in a dirty old wooden cabin which was my worst nightmare. Hardly slept a wink. Other than that, the meal we had was excellent and the Celtic music in the music barn was very enjoyable.
- Patricia (10/5): - It was a home away from home. We were very please with everything, specially the restaurant.
- Janetta (8/5): - I liked the fact that it was out in the country with lots of trees. The horses and cows are beautiful sight.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - The area was lovely and the people were great, but the cabin desperately needed some upgrades and there were a lot of bugs inside it.
- eileen (10/5): Reminded me of visiting Grandpa - Comfortable beds and a friendly and helpful staff makes this quirky place that much better. If you book understanding this is a very old house with little upgrades, you will be fine. Yes the walls are thin so you hear every creak but it's part of the charm. It reminds me so much of my grandparents house in Ireland when I was young. The traditional music at the barn on site on Friday and the music in the living room on Saturday was fabulous too.
- Raven (10/5): - Owners were very accommodating and friendly. This is a historic property. It has an old fashioned social component with live music in the common area and several fire pits on the grounds. Walking trails begin on this working farm. Truly charming. We enjoyed our much needed relaxing stay. We are motorcycle riders and the location was perfect for the must do Cabot trail.
- Kelly (2/5): - This was the filthiest place I’ve ever stayed. We have stayed in old rustic cabins before. This was dirty, gross & uncomfortable. The curtains looked like they had not been cleaned in 30 years. Gross old quilts. Musty. I even looked to see if there were bedbugs. Didn’t open luggage because of the spiders & bugs we saw inside the house. Didn’t shower because tubs looked yucky. Noisy rumbling AC that turned on and off all night. My son wanted to sleep in the car. We sat outside & watched the sunrise & left as soon as my husband had enough sleep to drive. Couldn’t get out fast enough. Please note- we really are not picky people. We are happy & adaptable but honestly they need to knock it all down & rebuild. Ps. We were only told after arriving no breakfast was available - this place is on the middle of nowhere. I’m sorry because the staff are nice & this was probably really good in it’s hay day, but this was a terrible experience for us.
- Brian (10/5): - We really enjoyed our stay. The food at supper time was great, along with the service. The breakfast food was very tasty. It was a very nice property with kind staff. We look forward to making another trip there someday.
- Kelly (10/5): - Wonderful quiet place, very pretty.
- Marie (8/5): - Love the setting, bungalows need a lot of work , no cold water in the shower , tap broken . The young ones working were awesome! Ashley MacIssac was incredible at the Barn !
- Christine (10/5): - Loved it all. Cozy cabins and excellent menu at restaurant
- Fatima (10/5): - great service, beautiful environment.
- Crystal (10/5): - We booked our stay online and we did book a cabin with a jet tub and tv as we had children travelling with us,however the cabin we had been given had just a regular tub and no tv.
The cabin was very cute so we didn’t mind or big staff about the tv and we really enjoyed our stay.
We will definitely be back again!
Lthanks and take care!
- Verified traveler (10/5): Beautiful Area - Was an amazing area, very beautiful. The woman who worked the check in counter when we checked in and out went above and beyond. Was also the same person who waited on us in the dining area. She was simply amazing. Will be back for sure!!
- Verified traveler (8/5): - We were looking forward to going to the barn for music but found out we missed it by a night! ( Only on Friday). It’s way off the beaten path, so plan on meals at the inn.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Hhhhhvhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
- Verified traveler (8/5): - We loved the room but would have liked a coffee machine for morning coffee !
- Bonnie (4/5): - We arrived on a Sunday around 5:30 pm. When I booked I thought we would be in the Inn. However we ended up in a cabin......not what I was expecting. There was no dinner being served and everything was closed. No restaurants or stores were opened.
The cabin was quaint but cobwebs in the corners. We did enjoy the wood fireplace. We were told at 9am they were shutting the power off. It was a beautiful area and grounds. Very rustic.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - It is a lovely country setting. Would be a beautiful location for a wedding.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - We loved the ambiance of this well-maintained older inn. It was comfortable and quiet, the setting was spectacular, with towering hillsides bathed in Fall colours, inviting much picture-taking. Upon arrival we were advised that we had been upgraded to a bigger room. Very nice indeed. At the evening meal our choices were done to perfection! And the celtic music Friday evening was like the icing on the cake for us. Highly recommended! We will definitely be returning in the future!
- Susan (10/5): - Very personable and convenient wonderful restaurant on property.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Staff very friendly, clean cabin and loved the wood stove
- Tim (10/5): - Loved it!!!
- Diana (8/5): Great place to wait out a hurricane! - Lovely room, gracious hosts. I can only imagine how nice it would have been if they had power!
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Lovely area if you're looking to relax and forget your worries. Ensure that you enter Faster Route on the GPS instead of Shortest Route, because the GPS sends you on a scary route at night. However, during the day it's Amazing! The lady at the front desk was such a sweetheart. Would definitely book again.
- Thomas (10/5): - Surrounded by fantastic nature, i liked the "old-fashioned" style. Astonishing fiddle concert in the evening.
- Christophe (8/5): Nice service but outdated decor - The location is great, remote and good starting point for the trails around. The hotel looks real nice from the outside and the staff is super friendly, service is real good, and breakfast is also good. Now for the bad part, the inside of the hotel looks and feel from 80's and in serious need of modernization.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - My husband and I were excited to returned this weekend to Normaway Inn after getting engaged here 30 years. We were very surprised to see that literally NOTHING has changed in 30 years.
We love the old style homes and furnishings but it is now couple with outdated 80’s and 90’s color scheme, decor, towels and bedding which gave it a very outdated tired look and feel.
Some food items were sold out on their limited dinner and breakfast menu.
- Don (10/5): - Staff was exceptionally friendly. Our room was nicely done and very comfortable.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Charming property, well run, friendly staff. We look forward to our return!
- Verified traveler (2/5): Dirty, Filthy, Gross! - If you want to take your chances here, good luck. Flies and mosquitoes everywhere! We arrived, and the place looked old and "rustic". The dirty stairs up to the rooms were only an indication of what was in store. The room itself looked okay, the bed was made and the towels were clean. The room was dark but okay. However, after one night, we noticed that the bathroom was strewn with hair all over the floor and there was dirt all over the rest of the floor. On closer inspection, there was hair in the bed. The bed linens had not been changed. This place was filthy, and the owner was apathetic at best. Avoid at all cost!
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Peaceful in a lovely serene location. Nice homemade food in the restaurant for breakfast and dinner. Very friendly staff. Would highly recommend.
- Jan (10/5): - Owner David was ever present and was very welcoming and personable. Guest rooms in the main building were what you would expect at an Inn of this age...smaller & not a lot of natural light coming in. There are other types of accommodations ie small cabins also. Wednesday night music & dancing was really fun- great fiddlers and feet stomping sounds - nice way to connect with other guests and locals. The food was incredible! Reserve a table early so you won't be disappointed - we waited until check-in and managed to get the last 2 spots at the last sitting- thank goodness!
Lamb shanks & coq au vin were amazing - even the bread & oatcakes before the meal were delicious.
Breakfast was also good...french toast is a great choice. We loved the engaging & knowledgeable staff and their welcoming hospitality. Normaway grounds are lovely, a must visit stop on your way around the Cabot Trail either for a stay or just a great meal if you are passing through.
- Chantal (10/5): Normaway Inn. A Unique place! - A 5 minutes ride from main highway. Not bad ! We were worried but we found it no problem. Very authentic place. Old style but well maintain. You won’t forget your time there. I would recommend to take a room in the hotel itself. People can also rent a mini cabin. Service is just wonderful. Food is delicious, people should try their porridge bread. The property is an experience in itself.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Beautiful location, well located, loved the restaurant as well as the nice horses and the donkey.
- Daniel (8/5): - Our cabins were comfortable and the property was beautifull. Unfortunately the weather prohibited us from seeing the entire grounds. Would definitely stay here again!
- Verified traveler (4/5): Run-down Inn - We booked in April to spend one night during our October trip to the Maritimes. We asked to have 2 rooms close together but were very disappointed to be told that our two rooms were in different wings of the inn and that this could not be changed.
The dining room staff were quite inconsiderate at breakfast and did not inform us that some of the buffet items had to be ordered from the kitchen. We only discovered this when the table next to ours was informed of this. We were now halfway through our breakfast!
We had spent some time at the Normaway Inn several years ago and we found the the condition of the inn, the furniture (some sofas and chairs hardly have any springs left) and the quality of the food has really gone downhill.
Needless to say, we will not be recommending this establishment to anyone and we will definitely not be staying there again!
- Verified traveler (6/5): - It was okay but was so much out of the way to get there.
