- Lynette (7/5): Comfy country pub to hang around and relax. - Nice cosy country pub to relax in front of a warm fire on a cold day. Friendly staff, thanks to Sam for volunteering to drive me to the station. At least a mile from the station, not good if you have mobility issues. I made the mistake of booking a single room. Although adequate, I didn’t realise how small it would be. As well it was directly above the kitchen where loud music thumped til about 9pm. My advice is to book one of the large rooms which looked really nice and spacious.

The room was very dirty - dog hair and mud on the floor, dog food on the floor in the bathroom and grime on the surfaces. Sink was broken. The room also had a lot of road noise.

- Nancy (10/5): Fantastic place, wonderful staff and delicious food. - Fantastic stay, beautiful hotel and wonderful staff - felt taken care of and everyone was so personable, the room was also super clean and the included breakfast was delicious. Felt like a true countryside hospitality experience. Location was also fantastic, you can walk to Castleton in about 40 minutes by following the road OR take the bus which takes about 6 minutes. SO easy to get to and tons to do. Visit the Peak Cavern (Devil's arse), walk up to Speedwell Cavern from there and walk up to Mam Tor - on the way there's Treak Cavern which is GREAT. Very walkable from this hotel! The train station is also very close so you can visit all the nearby towns. Loved everything honestly, one thing I will say is the floor is creaky so I was always mindful of other guests - and sometimes it got a bit loud due to the pub being below the room, but that's because we went to bed quite early after long walks during the day. Something to keep in mind, but didn't affect us much!

Pet friendly also which is good for long walks with your dogs! Ensuite facilities good and also private parking available. Overall the hotel was clean and tidy but there was for some reason a bad odour at the bottom of the stairs for access to the bedrooms. Not sure if was coming from the nearby toilets?

- Leanne (10/5): Family summer stay - We stayed for 2 nights in a family room, our room was small for 4 people but had everything we needed. The sofa bed wasnt the best, however we asked for a 2nd duvet to put ontop of the mattress and they were bmvery obliging and helpful. The staff are very courteous and nothing was too much trouble. The room was spotlessly clean. The kids loved the sweets left for them. The filter coffee in the room was a really nice touch. We ate in the restaurant the 1st evening and the food was very nice and service good. The breakfast was really nice and is cooked to order. Again service was fabulous. The 2nd evening we went to the curry cabin for a meal and we had a lovely meal. Food and service again was great. Was nice to see everywhere so busy.

- Lisa (6/5): All in all a fantastic stay , - The staff in the granny mays tea rooms were absolutely amazing 🤩 , extremely friendly and attentive, they couldn’t do enough for you , the room was a lovely size , and had everything you needed, There was one member of staff who worked in the old hall hotel, who we found extremely rude , dominarying , and not approachable, she told us that the chef on that particular evening shift wanted to be finished in the kitchen by 8.30 pm and that we had to hurry up, as it turned out the chef was still cooking at 9 pm because of all the walk in customers they got ,

- Verified traveler (6/5): A walkers hostelry. - Staff very welcoming and pub busy due to arrival of off road bikers and a motor cycle group- who remained outside and were no problem.As only pub open a number of locals and small folk music group present. Room a bit dark as property very old and en-suite rather basic. Carpets on stairs to rooms need replacing. Breakfast was limited due a problem however again staff very good.

We didn't have linen or towel for our 3rd person who was always on the booking. Another staff member had been asked 2x but not done anything. This gentleman jumped straight to making sure we were sorted - he was great with our meal service as well. Beautiful breakfast with lots of choices. The room wasn't made up for 3 as we booked for. Missing the linen for pullout couch and towel for 3rd person.

- Ed (7/5): A relaxed bolt hole after a day's hike. - Room was a good size. They were pragmatic about moving about in muddy boots as it is a walking area. Parking was close by. As the accommodation is above a pub, it is not possible to checkin early as it is physically not open; a bit awkward if you are going out walking all day and using it as a base. Lock on room door was faulty - it was reported, and it was clear that it had been reported before and they still hadn't bothered to fix it. Shower also broken. Despite a dinner booking, we needed to bring this forward as they had started to run out of food.
- Paige (3/5): Overpriced - The location was great, very close to lots of hikes. The pub atmosphere was lively and friendly and the food was amazing. It wasn't clear where to check in and the corridor outside the room was squeaky which you could hear inside the room. The toilet was really noise when it was flushed. The telly was really small and the remote was sticky. The buttons on the remote were worn away so we had trouble working the telly. The telly was also put in an aquard position compared to the bed as the posts got in the way of viewing. The bed sheet had a mark or stain on the bottom sheet (picture below). My dog was an extra £15 and for the price of the room I thought she was included. Checkout was also unclear and we didn't know what to do.

Great location (walking distance to both a train station and Castleton) Friendly staff. Excellent breakfast. It’s a fairly lively pub in an old building so it can be a little noisy until the pub closes at night.

- Lorna (8/5): Nice stay just a bit too cold in the bedroom for me - Lovely decor and warm welcome I was cold in the night and the bathroom had no heating at all which was unpleasant in January and there was a pump for the toilet which kept going off in the night and waking me. Maybe offer extra blankets?
- Eve (3/5): Poor - The bar staff where very helpful and friendly I could hear VERY loud metal music for hours from the kitchen in my room above it. Even when I went down to tell them I could hear it. The music was turned down for a few minutes then came on even louder. I could hear the chefs shouting at each other since they clearly couldn’t just speak to each other over the music. I had to go to sleep with my earplugs in. Then a couple of hours I was woken up by what sounded like an argument downstairs also.
- Christine (10/5): Great for hikers with dogs. Warm welcome, good food, value for money - The location is perfect for exploring Mam Tor area, so great for hikers. The hotel welcomes pets and dogs are welcomed in the restaurant and bar areas. Breakfast was excellent. We also ate in the restaurant both evenings - delicious home made food. Great value for money.

- Matt (7/5): Perfect for one or two nights when you're on a walking holiday and need a good pint and a warm meal. - It's a cosy little place right in the heart of The Peaks so in terms of location you cannot go wrong. There's a snug bar at the bottom, perfect for swapping stories of routes and hills and bogs and the restaurant served hearty, wholesome fare. The room was pretty basic with it's own bathroom and the breakfast was very nice. The waitress ignored us for our food order and the room was a little draughty.

- Daniel (8/5): Great place, great staff. - Young guy who checked me in was great, took me to my room, showed some of the important bits (shower switch etc), really good guy. Room was fab, food was maybe the weakest bit, I only had a burger but I thought it might be better, breakfast wasn't mentioned as an option. Price good for the room, I'd have gone for a more basic room with say breakfast included. Lovely place overall and some great staff. Food, price.
