• sara (10/5): - A very special place - both the accommodations and the main reception and dining areas. Worth the money for a once-in-a-lifetime cave experience. The staff was lovely and really elevated a great stay to exceptional. Antonio, the manager, was brimming with enthusiasm for his city and the hotel, sharing history of both. He recommended the fantastic Osteria al Casale restaurant on the cliffside for dinner which served excellent food and was nicely away from the hordes. Maristella is as sweet as she is adorable. So helpful and gracious. The included breakfast was ample and there was quite a variety, from savory options to pastries. The dining room is stunning. Loved it! We stayed in the family apartment which exceeded expectations. The main room is spacious even with sofa bed opened. There is a separate sitting area with another sofa and coffee table which was very useful. The sofa bed was comfortable and big enough for two teens to fit comfortably. The master bedroom was roomy and the bed super comfortable. It was only missing a full length mirror. Adding a barn door on the master bedroom to provide privacy from kids staying in the main area would be a bonus. There is also a kitchenette with refrigerator in the apartment. The bathroom is modern and functional. The shower is small so I shared with the manager that a shelf is needed to hold shampoo/soap. This is really the only critique on an otherwise magical place. Highly recommend.

They also provided excellent recommendations for walking around the city, including some sites to see and dining options in the area. The rooms are quiet, comfortable and include everything you might need. Be warned as they are true caves, there is little to no ventilation though it creates perfect sleeping temperatures as you don't have the sun baking in your windows. We absolutely cannot wait to stay here again!

• J (8/5): Beautiful small hotel. - It is really a superb hotel. In Matera to be able to sleep in a room "cave" is quite special. The room #5 is large and had everything we needed except a big mirror. The only one was a small square one in the open bathroom above the lavabo and the lighthening was more romantic then useful there! I know it is not the same in every room as every room has a special design and decoration. The reception and the breakfast room are also beautiful. We loved the big terrasse where we could enjoy the sun and a drink at the end of the afternoon. Well situated in the city center. A place to discover!

We did a private wine tasting which included wines made at their winery and a lot of good local history; their sister restaurant also was great for dinner. The location is perfect, easily walkable to the entirety of Matera.

Beautifully designed and had everything you needed. Breakfast was great and met some other lovely guests during our stay. Staff were friendly and the wine was very good. Enjoyed a dinner at their restaurant which is situated at the other side of town. There is only a few steps up to the accomodation from the street. We travelled to Matera by car and left it at car park about 6km away and they have a shuttle service that drops and picks you up from the door which was super easy and convenient. Would highly recommend a stay here and especially a visit to Matera it was a WOW for us!

The hotel coordinated with a parking garage our car and even used it in the middle of our stay drive to Gravina and Albarobello. Matera is beautiful and has great restaurants (we recommend Austin in front of Agustine church).

We stayed in the family room / cave which was great for three of us … a short stroll to breakfast and right in the heart of Matera . The glass of wine on arrival was wonderful ( we ended up buying bottles to take with us ). The walk into the canyon / over the swing bridge and up the other side was steep but worth the view .

We had no windows! also we booked a car transfer from the airport to the hotel. No show! Hotel said the taxi driver forgot. We had to take an airport taxi at an extra €40 no offer to assist we were just told by the hotel not our fault!

The property was stunning and staying in an actual cave was a real experience. The staff were so welcoming and helpful, the breakfasts were amazing, and when we arrived we were greeted with a glass of wine to welcome us. We would highly recommend!

The staff were helpful, and the common areas are just as unique as the individual rooms. There were minor inconvenience within our room as far as storage options of belongings and toiletries, and getting in and out of your room can be challenging, but very minor in comparison to the experience. HIGHLY recommend this property.

The toilet is so small and the water leaked to the whole floor all the way towards the kitchen. Breakfast is below the par and we didn’t feel the warm hospitality. From the reception we knew already we made a mistake on booking here. They were unresponsive. We should have stayed in sextantio. We didn’t slept well as the humidifier kept of making loud noise so if your a light sleeper it will wake u up and it happens multiple times. The reception just suggested to turn it off. Turning that off at night will make whole room smell since it’s a cave. Damasco parking they suggest is good but the shuttle we encountered does not have aircon. On a very hot weather we were very disappointed. Charged all premium you want but you must deliver. For this case it was an overall failure. We regret staying here.

Having breakfast in the amazing cave room is so memorable. They also do wine tastings on site which we found really informative and delicious. You won’t be disappointed by your stay here.

• Frederick (10/5): All around amazing - My stay here was all around fantastic. The hotel is made from the the Neolithic caves. But these aren't your grandmother's caves. These caves have been refitted into beautiful, modern, amazingly-comfortable spaces. Check-in was a breeze. The front desk prepared me for parking considerations the day before I checked in. I easily found off site parking for €25 with a a €10 taxi service to the hotel. I know that's expensive, but it was well worth it. The city is is unbelievable. The hotel location is right in the middle of of the historic section called The Sassi. You do not need a vehicle for a visit to this City. I only stayed one night but I think one could easily spend 3 nights here and still leave things for the next visit. On the morning I checked out the front desk provided me with complimentary coffee while I waited for the taxi.

• Davide (8/5): Experience for once in your life - Il Palazzotto in Matera is an experience. It is a grotto style room and something to experience once in your life. Service was amazing, very kind and welcoming. The room was really pretty. We just did not realize the bathroom was fully opened (as in no walls) and it was a bit incovenient for us, being a couple of friends. Furthermore we found it quite cold (being a stone room) and this caught us by surprise. Overall happy though. Thank you very much

• Verified traveler (10/5): - This is a fantastic little boutique hotel where rooms are 'caves'. The staff were very accommodating and provided excellent service throughout our stay, from coffee on arrival, through booking our restaurant and an excellent breakfast. One feature is that the hotel's wines are from their own vineyards, very reasonable priced and the 'Kataos' variety, a Primitivo from around Gioa del Colle, we tried was excellent.

• PHILIP (10/5): Matera’s Calm Oasis - Il Palazzotto is a small, classy, elegant hotel in the magical Italian hill town of Matera. Our room, an actual cave, was unlike anything we’ve experienced in over 50 years of travel. Build and amenities were all excellent. The service was genuine, comprehensive and welcoming but not pushy. Breakfast was delicious.. We had a minor travel emergency during our stay and the hotel staff were caring and efficient and stayed the course until the problem was resolved.

The breakfasts were all very fresh - bread, fruit pastries etc. - not much choice but certainly sufficient. The room was comfortable. It was spacious enough for 2 people. The shower and toilet facilities were a little "intimate". The shower and toilet were in an alcove, sperate from each other but adjacent to each other with one sliding door between them. We were two friends sharing the room and found the toilet arrangements a little awkward. It felt like the toilet was in the bedroom rather than a separate room. . I would recommend the hotel for a few nights - we stayed for 4 - and sharing a room with someone you know well!
• Ilene (10/5): The most amazing place! - We have never stayed in a nicer place. First of all, staying in a cave was amazing. The room was fantastic and the location perfect to walk everywhere. The breakfast was OUTSTANDING. We loved every moment of being here from the people who couldn't do enough for you to the beautiful place itself. When we return to Matera, we will stay here again for sure! Thank you for an amazing night!!
• Sandra (10/5): Amazing all around - service with a capital S - Amazing location, great amenities, beautiful rooms, all the trimmings and more :-) Honestly impressive value especially in a touristy location such as Matera - I was really , really impressed as well with the professional qualities and kindness of the staff. A must if you are ever in Matera! I, for one, will try to make it as often as I can and find an available room at the Palazzotto as it will now be hard to find anything that compares!

Few things can be imprproved, we stayed at the family room with the kitchen, but no kitchen utensils. Garbage bin was missing in the bathroom area. One of the lights did not go out in the room. WiFi was not extended as per stundRd conditions in a family room since it is located remotely from the rest of the hotel

Mixed bag sadl - We had a difficult and disappointing start to our stay but once discussed at check out with a very helpful member of staff we felt much better . The room was lovely as was the breakfast room . Nothing hot offered at breakfast . Would ask for a little tour and info when you check in . Our room number 7 was sadly on a busy ish ( for Matera ) walkway which was a bit annoying as really wanted to sleep in as we had a busy week and this was our first comfy bed ! The hotel is lovely and most staff are wonderful.
• Joshua (10/5): A truly exceptional stay in an incredlible city. - An absolutely spectacular hotel in an incredible location. The room was clean, comfortable & beautifully decorated & presented. The reception, lounge & breakfast area was exceptional and the included breakfast was fantastic. My wife & I had a 2 night say, but could easily have stayed a full week (or more). Staff were great, with some excellent restaurant recommendations & expert tips on what to see & do in Matera. We cannot recommend Il Palazzotto highly enough.

She is a so nice person talk about the region, the hotel and stories, She is an architest who developed and decorated this magic hotel keeping the old fashion caves with incredibles touches. Herself, her daughter and all staff are so nice, pollite and gave us excellent recommendations to visit places and restaurants. We loved Matera, both because of the city in itself but also because of these dear people and their hotel. Highly recommended. Congrats!
