Guest Reviews
- Hong (8/5): - The owner personally prepares breakfast every morning and serves it at 8:00 a.m. The meal includes coffee, tea, juice, a fruit plate with eight varieties of freshly picked tropical fruits from the backyard, boiled eggs, yogurt, bread, and muffins. The room is very clean.
The location is very convenient. It's close to the Akaka Falls State Park, Rainbow Falls, Liliʻuokalani Gardens, the Hawaii Tropical Botanical Garden, and the farmers market in downtown Hilo
I give it a 4 out of 5 for the following reasons:
1. No air conditioning unit
2. No bathroom ventilation fan
3. The bed is a queen rather than a king
- Carolina (10/5): - Wonderful facilities, great breakfast with local fruits
- Nicole (10/5): - Lovely B&B in Hilo.
- Tessa (10/5): - Lory and Stewart were fantastic hosts. The room was perfect for a couple! Was a great base for Hawaii Volcanoes National Park! Lots of dining options about 5 minutes away.
- James (10/5): - Our hosts were great. Lots of local information.
- Margaret Joan (10/5): - Excellent B&B. Located in a quiet and relaxing neighborhood. Knowledgeable hosts and an awesome breakfast.
- Michiyo (10/5): - Great place to stay
- Susan (10/5): - Stuart served us fruit from his trees for breakfast. His spacious and well kept back yard overlooks the lovely river that feeds Rainbow Falls. Idyllic.
- Michael (10/5): First time at a bed and breakfast - This was our first time ever at a bed snd breakfast. I wasn't sure what to expect. I'd say Intimate would be a good word, and friendly. Laurie the owner welcomed us personally, and there were two other couples there. The morning communal breakfast gave us a taste of the local fruits and breads, all hand preparec. The room was comfortable and while there's no A/C, there was no need due to the local nighttime climate. It wasn't near the downtown district, but turned out to be a plus. If you visit Hilo, I highly recommend Old Hawaiian Bed and Breakfast! Thanks for great 2-day stay.
- Randall (10/5): One of my best b and b stays - Amazing b and b with a lovely breakfast of local fruit and homemade baked goods
- Claudia Zavaleta (10/5): - My husband and I stayed there for four nights and we had the most wonderful time there. Every morning was a different type of fresh cut fruit, mostly grown in the property and home bake goods. It was delicious! The room was small but comfortable and was exactly what we were looking for. The property and location was great too. It was a 10 minutes walk to rainbow falls and 5 minutes drive to downtown Hilo.
- Dave (10/5): - Thoughtful room decor. Very clean and functional. No TV so I caught up on my reading, that is a huge plus. The breakfast offerings of ample fruit and baked things were great. Wonderful and relaxing
- Elise (10/5): - Very clean and very well organized. Very quiet and peaceful. Breakfast is absolutely phenomenal with plenty of fresh fruits and variety of breads. Hosts are very friendly and helpful in providing recommendations. Would definitely go back.
- Abby (10/5): - We loved our stay here: Beautiful grounds, peaceful neighborhood location, comfortable large room, delicious healthy breakfast, friendly hosts. We'll stay here again when in Hilo.
- Stewart (8/5): - The hosts are very friendly. The breakfast is great with local fruits and homemade breads. The grounds around the house are beautiful making breakfast on the porch very enjoyable.
- Hansam (10/5): A piece of calm paradise - Amazing b&b! Dae was a wonderful host. A tucked away home where you will be surrounded by nature and its sounds. Highly recommend. We will be back!
- Justine (10/5): - In a quiet, pretty residential neighborhood but not far from places to see and eat in town. It was such a nice sanctuary after driving in town traffic and loved falling asleep to the sound of frogs. Relaxing room and nice bathroom; no television, but was able to stream on our laptop with the wifi. Breakfasts on the lanai were lovely. Was introduced to some new tropical fruit, and Lory made two kinds of delicious baked goods each morning and sweetly offered to pack leftovers for us to take on our outings. Would absolutely stay here if in Hilo again!
- Martha (10/5): - We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The house is located well above Hilo in a very quiet neighborhood. We walked up the road 1/2 mile to see the Boiling Pots on the river and also admired the varied uses of hardened lava in people’s landscaping. The breakfast was sumptuous! Two kinds of homemade breads, a fresh smoothie, tropical fruit cup, yogurt and eggs. Welcoming and accommodating hosts. Next time we will opt for a larger room than Bamboo, which is small for 2 people.
- Verified traveler (10/5): great stay - This is our kind of BnB - simple but everything we need, quiet and natural surroundings. The lanai is shared between the three rooms and has a small fridge, microwave, and electric kettle. Breakfast featured fruits picked from the trees on the property.
- Dena (10/5): Gorgeous view - Great host great breakfast fabulous view. Very nice room. Yes the driveway is intimidating! Between the twisty road and steep drive and unfamiliar rental car I would not feel comfortable going in and out at night for dinner after dark
- Scott (10/5): Amazing - Everything was Amazing !
- Karen (10/5): - Perfectly tranquil setting. Comfortable room with gorgeous view from window. The outdoor kitchen was convenient and the breakfast was amazing. The hostess gave take away bag for day trip and shared recipe of delicious monkey bread. Would highly recommend
- Thomas (10/5): Old Hawaiian B&B is a great option - The owner, Lory, was kind, courteous, a great baker and a wealth of knowledge about the island. Her B&B is in a great location to see the sites that Hilo has to offer. We had a wonderful experience!
- Deborah (10/5): - We stayed in the smallest room, which was the only one available for our dates. Bathroom was tiny, but bedroom was fine, with a king bed. Absolutely everything you would need is there, or on the common porch, from guide book to umbrellas to insect repellent to beach towels…you get the idea. Common fridge on the porch, along with microwave, dishes, kettle for tea or hot cocoa.beautiful backyard stretching to the river, very peaceful. Breakfast consists of a fruit smoothie or fresh squeezed juice, a lot of fresh fruit, boiled egg, 2 types of delicious homemade bread and/or muffins, yougurt, coffee or tea. Our hostess- you only see her at breakfast unless you call her, is very pleasant and informative. Walking distance to Boiling Pots, and 2 minute drive to rainbow falls. Maybe 5 minutes to downtown Hilo.very enjoyable, relaxing stay. Would definitely stay again.
- Brad (10/5): Just like home! - Very nice stay. Breakfast was excellent! Property was beautiful! Lieu and Hana were very friendly and helpful! Felt like we were family! Would love to stay again.
- Linda (10/5): - Lori, the owner and our host, was wonderful. A before breakfast walk to the Boiling Pots usually meant a lot of, "friendly good mornings" to and from the neighbors out with their dogs. Breakfasts on the lanai were not only delicious but included freshly baked banana bread and fruit from trees growing on the property. As a side note, the water is exceptional coming from a municipal source. Lori also spent whatever time we needed to answer questions and relay pertinent information about the area. A bit of a drive to downtown Hilo but quick and easy. Regarding the rooms, and we didn't consider this a downside, as it is easy to see in the photos on their website, but it should be noted the Bamboo Room was a bit compact for those used to the expansive nature of modern upscale accommodations. So if that is a problem, one of the other rooms may be a better choice. No hesitation, we would stay there again, in the Bamboo Room, and recommend it to anyone going to Hilo. Steve and Linda
- Chris (10/5): Nice break from hotels - Lovely place, close to airport, helpful and congenial hostess and very reasonably priced.
- Jesse (10/5): - Beautiful property and house
- Marlize (10/5): Lovely B&B - A lovely little B&B in Hilo in a nice residential neighborhood, and only 1/2 mile down the road from Boiling Pots. Our room was clean and comfortable and the owners were very welcoming. The homemade breakfast each morning was excellent, and Lorie was even kind enough to pack us a breakfast to go one morning when we left super early to go to the national park. Would stay again!
- Alberta (10/5): - Perfect in every way. Host was helpful. Breakfast presentation was outstanding. Room was more than expected
- Priscilla (8/5): - Great property! Just know, there are a few animal noises but that’s to be expected for the area. We loved this place and the breakfast was great! Lory was a great host.
- Jodi (10/5): - The host was awesome and so friendly! The view from the lanai where we had a delicious breakfast was beautiful and peaceful!
- Xuan (10/5): - We had a wonderful time at Old Hawaiian B and B.
- Joleen (6/5): - There was very poor lighting on the walk to the house. We had to use our cellphone flashlights to light our way. Our name was on the room door, but without a light we couldn't see it...There were no lights in the parking area at all, and no lights on the steps. It would have been nice to know there was no A/C as well. The ceiling fan was appreciated, but all of the textiles felt damp. Very nice breakfast, lovely staff and host. Great lanai and Spike (the cat) was very friendly.
- Shari (10/5): - The property owner is delightful and the property is lovely, even on a rainy day.
- Elena (10/5): Relax in Paradise - Lory greeted us when we arrived and showed us to our room which was lovely and bright. The property has fruit trees and you can walk back to a nice river view. Breakfast on the lanai was very good, fresh fruit and delicious baked goods, especially when Lory makes her healthy muffins and macnut banana bread. Easy drive to town.
- Bruce (10/5): - Breakfast was excellent and check in was fast and easy. Room was spacious and bed was very comfortable. Walk the road to see orchids, peacocks and the boiling pots in the river and waterfall at the park at the end of the road. I suggest gps if you arrive after dark as there are no streetlights.
- Cheryl (10/5): - We had a lovely stay at this B&B. The property is a beautiful setting, the presentation of breakfast was lovely, and we enjoyed conversation with the host. After some vigorous days of hiking, there was a nice tranquil place to relax on the lanai and enjoy the view.
- Frank (10/5): - This is a beautiful place to people who love natural and quite environment. Kudo for the home made breakfast with fresh home grown fruits and home baked muffins. Breakfast is served on lanai with birds singing, fresh air and scenic view, makes it the beautiful start of a day. I would like to recommend it to my friends and all.
- Salehuddin (10/5): Excellent host with sumptuous tropical fruits brea - Our first experience on B&B type stay. Located on an old charmed house with nice well-kept backyard. The highlight of our stay was the daily breakfast. A sumptuous breakfast with tropical fruits. Spiky the cat, was super friendly. Great Stay. Reminds me of my hometown - Malaysia
- Mark (10/5): Happy time in Hilo - Delicious breakfast with many native fruits!
- Nhi (10/5): - The Old Hawaiian B&B has a gorgeous backdrop. You’re close to Rainbow falls, and the backyard is a tropical oasis. Downtown Hilo is a close drive. Breakfast consisted of fresh fruits, smoothie, yogurt, boiled egg, and baked goods. Hospitality was great.
Only thing to note is that there’s no AC, so the rooms got quite humid, warm with a musty odor (even with the windows open and fans).
- ben (10/5): - The property in Hilo, HI, was "stunning" and 'beautiful.
- June (10/5): - The property is beautiful with lots of trees and plantings. There was an incredible array of tropical fruits for breakfast plus other good stuff. The owners/staff were very friendly and helpful. Our room/suite was quiet, spacious and comfortable.
- Ariel (10/5): - The property was lovely, just out of the main town center so you could drive to everything but felt like you were on the green mountain. The room was tasteful and comfortable and we had a very nice breakfast out on the lanai. Generally our hosts were kind, knowledgeable and welcoming. What a nice place!
- Verified traveler (10/5): - The hosts are awesome
We had a lovely relaxing stay
It was friendly and a welcome change from hotels
We felt very safe as all of the covid protocols were in place
I highly recommend this bandb
- Gaurav (10/5): Beautiful property & room and an excellent stay! - This is an excellent B&B! Lory is a gracious host with a beautiful property that's minutes away walking distance from some scenic spots and about 7-8 mins drive from the city center. The room and bathroom were clean and had everything we needed. The covered patio where breakfast was served each morning was great to hangout for a bit after the day's excursions and also had a refrigerator and microwave for folks to use. The breakfast served each morning was absolutely delicious and the seating arrangement made social distancing effortless.
We met some kind fellow travelers who shared useful tips that made our trip great - something we always look forward to in B&B stays. And Spike (kitty) and Daisy (doggo) were always awesome to have around. We love dogs but it was great to see that Lory ensured that everyone was comfortable with dogs before letting Daisy out.
We'd happily stay at this B&B again if travels bring us back to Hilo some day.
- Hea (10/5): - Beautiful property on a safe area. Loved the breakfast!
- Brad (10/5): Wonderful, adorable B&B in Hilo - This adorable property is in a great location to explore the area. There are waterfalls both up the street and down the street. Their very large property has lots of interesting trees and shrubs to explore. They source much of the breakfast food from their garden. Great fruit and bread breakfast with hard-boiled egg, yogurt, and yummy smoothie. The room is very comfortable and well-appointed for our family of 4. I only wish we were able to stay longer than the 2 days we were there. Lory is very nice and helpful, and their pets are very loving.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - The owners are fantastic, and their bed and breakfast shows it. They are friendly and informative. The property is immaculate with a beautiful river in the back. They serve a excellent breakfast that allows you to try some of the tropical fruits grown in their own orchard. 5 out 5 will stay again the next time we are on the big island.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Nice property. People staying there should be aware that there is no television in your room nor is there any air condition. It’s not noted in the amenities.
The staff will also ask that you’re very quiet so that you do not disrupt the neighbors. It’s a nice place to stay if you’re looking to do a day in Hilo.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - LOVED THE LOCAL FEEL...THE BEAUTIFUL NEW SHADES OF GREEN ONLY FOUND IN A RAINFOREST... THE QUITE WALK TO BOILING POTS. THE SEASONAL FRUIT FROM THE BACKYARD TREES...THE SHARING OF ISLAND TREASURES. CLOSE TO BUT FAR ENOUGH AWAY FROM THE TOWN.
- Brian (10/5): A Slice of Paradise - Amazing property, service, and breakfast. Fresh fruit and baked goods each morning. Friendly welcome from the owners as well as Spike the Cat. Wonderful lanani to relax and enjoy the backyard.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Everything about this B&B was quite enjoyable. The 1930's home was impeccably and tastefully renovated.
The spacious property was well maintained and adjacent to the Wailuka River.
The host, Lory, was very friendly and welcoming.
The neighborhood had similar homes and was quite nice. The Boil Pots State Park was an easy walk.
Lastly, the breakfast was excellent. Lory provided homemade breads and an array of fruits from the garden. We had to leave quite early on our second morning and Lory was gracious enough to prepare a breakfast to go.
Five stars...easily.

- Verified traveler (10/5): - This place very clean and wonderfully quiet. It is a beautiful property and we enjoyed walking around exploring the neighborhood and the nearby Boiling Pots falls. And the owner shared her wonderful, welcoming aloha, making us feel right at home. I would definitely stay there again!
- Verified traveler (10/5): - We enjoyed our three nights in this peaceful and quiet B and B in a lovely neighborhood. Rooms are homey and clean with personal touches to make your stay even more relaxing. It feels very private. Delicious and ample breakfast of local fruits and homemade breads and scones are artistically arranged to delight the eye as well as the palate. Lori is a wonderful host with lots of tips on local sights. Less than a mile from Rainbow Falls, it was also a great launching place for exploring Hilo itself, or driving up the coast for waterfalls and scenic views, or down to view lava fields and the spectacular southern shoreline and beaches. Forgot your flashlights for going into lava tubes or your guidebook or umbrella? No problem- she has them available for you during your stay. An all- around great stay.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Great place to stay with exceptional host - I had a great stay. The house is situated in a nice, quiet neighborhood, and the host is amazing, friendly, and makes you feel at home and provides an amazing breakfast that comes with the best and freshest of fruit (with some great variety). One of my family members said it was the best breakfast they've ever had.
I highly recommend this place!
- Cindy (10/5): - Quaint and cozy home in a charming area of Hilo town. Ultra clean and quiet. Breakfast was superb with exotic fruit and homemade scones/breads. Wonderfully kept grounds.
- Wendy (10/5): - Lori was very gracious! Excellent location; clean room. I highly recommend.
- Daniel (10/5): Definitely Would Stay Again - Very cozy place and the host was very kind and responsive. The breakfasts were delicious and the host even baked bread for us every morning. Anything we needed was provided to us. If we visit the area again we would definitely stay here again!
- Sasha (10/5): - Clean, quiet and safe spot to stay and explore the Hilo saide of the island.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - It is a lovely home and happily felt like I was going back in time. Beautiful architecture and amenities that were made better by the people. Great experience!
- Verified traveler (10/5): Friendly, welcoming, helpful, comfortable. - Look for the blue bot on the road. Our room, the smallest, was cozy (ie, tiny) but quite adequate. Bed comfortable. Shower very good, toilet area cramped for big people, fine for us. Breakfast was great!! Fresh homemade pastries, fresh juices, wonderful variety of fruits, and flowers (to eat). Only complaint was the yogurt was full fat and full sugar in individual containers. I didn't ask for plain yogurt until late in our visit. Ask, and you shall receive, a scoop. Grounds are beautiful. Be sure to walk to the cliff at the back of the property. Room also is supplied with latest guidebook: Big Island Revealed. Great guidebook, at least to my sensibility.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Was nice to have lots of local info available in the form of tour books and a brochure the owner out to get her to help
Guests with local restaurant menus for example
- Verified traveler (10/5): - It was lovely and homey and the breakfast feast was to die for.
- Ghyslaine (10/5): Enjoyed our stay - We really enjoyed our stay. Location is amazing with its lush backyard, palm trees and river. Host very welcoming, Very good communication, well organized and spotless clean. Good breakfast with fresh fruits from the garden and muffins, banana bread etc....were delicious.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Charming and neatly appointed B&B, conveniently located in a residential neighborhood in Hilo. Lory is an amazing host and whips up a delicious, healthy breakfast spread of fruits, smoothies, and pastries. Rooms are well-furnished, comfortable, and a good value. We stayed in the Bamboo Room which was the smallest, but would recommend the larger Hawaiian or Sunrise Rooms to others
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Excellent bed and breakfast. Very modern, nicely designed rooms. Would definitely stay here again.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - The hostess, Laurie, was very helpful about local sights and activities.
- Raymond (10/5): Pretty good place - nice place. Kind of small but ok.
- Burtonbj (10/5): - Lovely old house - comfortable bed - beautiful grounds - well kept
- Verified traveler (6/5): - The breakfast on the lanai was lovely . The room however was somewhat disappointing, the shower curtain was old and has seen better days, the “dishes” provided in your room were very lacking. There was 2 plates which weren’t microwave safe ,2 spoons and 2 butterknives and a corckscrew that looks like it would give you tetanus (we drank our wine from paper cups). There is no air conditioning which I understood but the middle bamboo room has ZERO airflow as it is sandwiched between the two other end rooms which have nice windows and much better airflow. It was next to impossible to sleep as it was SO HOT AND HUMID in the room. I would avoid this room if I had known the airflow situation better in advance. Quiet hour is 9pm as it is located in a residential area ...I felt like I had to whisper and tiptoe around and not use our vehicle in the evening (as being quiet was emphasized In many places ). Lory was lovely and the place is conveniently located . Also enjoyed spike and daisy.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Good - Good to stay here. Recommend!
- Verified traveler (10/5): - The area and grounds ate beautiful. It's very quiet and the bed is comfortable.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Very quiet and pretty park-like setting. Good value for the $.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - The room was beautiful, clean, and just off a lovely lanai. Lots of info provided re: sightseeing in and around Hilo. The setting and yard was lush and amazing and very quiet. Breakfast was served and attended by our hostess, who knows her community well. The price was exceptionally reasonable!
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Quiet location, but close to town. Beautiful property.
