Guest Reviews
- Michelle (10/5): - Excellent in all aspects. Perfect location by the canal with a short walk to the centre. The room was comfortable, spacious and clean. The food and drink all hit the spot, served by friendly and efficient staff. 2pm check in and 11am check out is a bonus. Great value for money. Would highly recommend.
- Pamela (7/5): Very pleasant - Near theatre … Good food Stairs to steep for me !
- Anne (10/5): Fabulous hotel in the best location in Stratford upon Avon - Brilliant location excellent food and staff Very winding staircase difficult to manage a lot of luggage but everything else makes up for this.
- Catherine (10/5): - Friendly, helpful staff. Good breakfast. Great food served all day.
- Ann (7/5): Good location, overall a nice place to stay. - Fantastic location. Nice, big room. The staff were friendly. The cleaning was a little hit and miss. The room opposite ours had been left with dirty linen and towels in the open doorway for nearly 24 hours. The staff explained they’d run out of hand towels so we had floor towels for the duration of our stay. Not too bad at all, nothing to put us off but a little more attention could have been paid to it.
- Fiona (4/5): Convenient but offhand - Location No soap in bathroom. No Wi-Fi. Perfunctory service
- Kerry (9/5): -
- Gail (8/5): Lovely friendly staff , breakfast was great It’s in a very central location so easy to get to places . - It’s age and location The steep narrow staircase to our room
Our room did have areas that hadn’t been dusted/ cleaned.
- Jennifer (8/5): -
- Joseph (7/5): Good place to stay, good food and beer - Great location for getting around town, good food and beer, room was clean shower was good, beds clean and comfortable, quiet room, nice and warm, I would stay again. I was expecting the rooms to be in the pub its self not in a separate building, the idea of the old school walking out the pub up to bed,
- Lucy (10/5): Brilliant stay, delicious food and friendly staff. Would definitely come again. - Well presented, Great location. The beds were a bit hard!
- Emma (10/5): - Convenient location, cosy and not too loud in evenings, even though it’s very popular spot
- Domenica (10/5): Lovely hotel and restaurant in a great location. - The room was very clean, up-to-date, and attractive with a beautiful bathroom. The restaurant is lovely. We were offered a selection of hot breakfast choices including a traditional English breakfast, plus a buffet with coffee, tea, cereal and pastries, all included with our room. The staff was very friendly and attentive and is in easy walking distance to the Theater and to Henley St. I really liked this hotel and would definitely recommend it. The hotel does not have parking but there is a public car park just steps away. If you have difficulty carrying luggage, note that some of the rooms are up a flight of stairs with no elevator.
- Laurent (9/5): -
- Rostislav (10/5): - Chybí štětky na wc
- David (5/5): Stairway to hell. No lift - no return visit! - Breakfast was good. I ended up ordering more than needed. Dinner on first night was only fair. Stairs were extremely difficult to navigate.
- Elaine (9/5): Meghan is great and v welcoming. Lasagne us to die for. - Room fine - loved the shower. Was a bit surprised to find male clothing lwft by a previous visitor. Access via v steep staircase. Glad I wasn't trying to manoeuvre a case up those.
- Christine (8/5): Lovely location, room very small & basic not the upgrade l paid for - Location No fridge, tooth brush glass in the bathroom or toilet brush, cheap shower curtain and shower water temperature tepid!
- John (10/5): A great experience - We stayed at Pen and Parchment for 2 nights beginning May. Very happy with the room, staff and cleanliness. The pub / restaurant was also top notch. I would highly recommend anyone to consider this place for your stay in Stratford upon Avon. A (less than) 10 minute walk to all important sites in the town.

- SteveRigby (8/5): An excellent central city location with friendly staff - The major plus of this hotel is the great central location, five minutes walk from restaurants and bars and the RSC theatre. Excellent breakfast. Friendly Staff. Nice room. Window was an old sash window and provided no sound proffing from the noise of the city and allowed a draft to blow straight into the room. Also rattled in the wind (resolved by packing it with cardboard). Minor grumble as overall the room was great.
- Lindsay (4/5): Good location terrible sleep - I live Stratford and the location is fabulous, we have stayed here once before and stayed in the outer part of the hotel which was great We stayed in the rooms within the hotel this time. Stairs were ridiculously narrow. Our room had adjoining doors to another room which was locked however the others thought it would be good to constantly try and knock the door and then 630 am in the morning at it again and very loud so not any where near as restful as we would of liked ended up checking out earlier than planned to go home
- Louise (9/5): - All good
- David (10/5): Great place to stay - Perfect location and really nice pub / hotel Nice people and good location
- Karen (10/5): - Good central location
- David (7/5): -
- Barry (8/5): Everything good except for the landlord's strange hours. - Chosen for its location. Closest to theaters. It is a pub an and one would expect pub hours, however getting back from the theater at 10.20 we found the doors locked and were informed that 'last orders' had been called. We were grudgingly served a very quick gin.
- Barry (9/5): A well-located hotel with an excellent bar and breakfast, with highly professioanl staff. - The location suited our needs on a trip to the Royal Shakespeare Theatre very well. The receptionist on that day (Saturday 28th March) was exceptional and very helpful. Apologies for not recalling her name. There was a slightly irritating and continuous noise from the plumbing in our room (7) which delayed our sleep a little.
- Brian (8/5): -
- Anne-Marie (4/5): Very disappointing. Had high hopes. Excellent location. Substandard cleaning. - Breakfast was not included.
The location was very good for visiting the sights in Stratford-upon-Avon.
The beds were very comfortable. The room was unclean. There was faeces in the toilet and smeared under the seat. The mugs had not been washed, there were coffee/tea stains inside them and lipstick round the rim of one mug.
The towels had dirty marks on.
One of the window handles was broken and it wasn't possible to close the window properly.
The bathroblind was black and mouldy.
The room was unacceptably dusty and the floors were grubby.
The stairs up to the rooms and outside area were dirty and full of cobwebs.
The solid toilet was reported to the staff and we requested fir it to be cleaned. Upon out return to the room the marks in the toilet were gone but the smears of faeces were still in the underside of the toilet.
The was no attention to detail where the cleaning of the room was concerned, if it gad been done at all. It made us feel uncomfortable being in the room. Terribly disappointing as this overnight stay was a gift for my son.
- Hermine (7/5): Ideal gelegen für eine Stadtbesichtigung -
- Mark (10/5): -
- Christine (8/5): Good value. Great location. Comfy beds. Lovely staff - Staff were very friendly. Great location and good value The constant plumbing noises - like a washing machine or cistern being refilled - it went on around the clock, but most of us managed to get to sleep!! Also, bery dusty lamp shades.
- Jane (10/5): Fantastic - Fabulous location, right in the centre of town.
Rachel the manager and Gio behind the bar were brilliant. The mattress was very very firm, verging on uncomfortable.
- deborah (9/5): Lovely accommodatio - The pub and accommodation were brilliant That we were not forwarded about the car park being ripped up and it being a night mare to park
- Dinny (7/5): -
- ankita (9/5): -
- Elie (7/5): - Clean spacious room The toilet was making noises all night
- Tennb (9/5): -
- David66 (8/5): - Great staff, perfect location Room needs a little TLC, nothing major.
Drinks a little expensive.
- Stephen (8/5): - Location, staff, food
- Tam (9/5): What a pleasant surprise the Pen & Parchment was! Lovely place to stay! - We stayed in room 1 which was very well appointed and comfortable. All staff we met were helpful and friendly. Nothing!
- Mark (9/5): - Very nice rooms. Perfect location for exploring Stratford. Extremely friendly and helpful staff.

- helen (7/5): -
- Molly00097 (10/5): Great accomodation - Excellent welcomibg staff, lovely clean room and really central location.
- Emily (10/5): Exceptional staff and a brilliant location. - I cannot rate the staff highly enough. They bent over backwards to ensure we had a lovely stay. Even when the restaurant was booked out, a team of four set out to find us a table - exceptional service! Also perfect location for the RSC - you can see it out of the window! N/A
- Ashley (10/5): Convenient, friendly spot to explore Shakespeare’s home town - This place was adorable, great location, and attached to an amazing restaurant - with vegan options! The staff was friendly and even recommended spots for breakfast. The room had everything we needed, we enjoyed our stay! Nothing, it was great!
- Jenny (9/5): - Staff were really friendly and helpful
- Dorine (8/5): -
- Tracey (9/5): -
- Joanna (10/5): - The location was excellent, in the centre of Stratford upon Avon
- Sheila (7/5): Nice room and friendly staff - It was a nice room with a comfortable bed, and the staff were friendly and helpful. The desk lamp couldn't be adjusted to point where I wanted it, and the light above the bathroom mirror was too weak to be any use; so there was nowhere in the room where a woman could see properly to put on her make-up.
- Sue (9/5): Perfect location. Friendly staff and a lovely breakfast - Perfect location just across from the river in Stratford everything was within easy walking distance. Room was clean and comfortable. Breakfast was very good. Lovely friendly staff. Not a negative really just a note that some of the rooms (ours included) are in an annexe not the main building but everything was secure & we didn’t encounter any issues it just may not be for everyone.
- Denise (8/5): Very good - Central, good rooms, helpful staff Bar was closed
- Susan (3/5): Access too difficult.Staff superb.Unlikely to stay again - Excellent staff Excellent location.Very reasonable food. It cannot be helped because it is an old building but for the elderly the stairs are dreadful.Smallroom and bathroom.Window would not open at all.Curtain would not close at left hand side.
- Sandra (9/5): - Comfortable room, nice bathroom
- Mel (10/5): Staff were exceptionally helpful and friendly! -
- Janet (8/5): -
- June (8/5): Lovely room in a lovely location but not enough staff at the restaurant has it took a hour & half to get served food - Close to town centre Steep stairs
- Haines (8/5): -
- Ray (8/5): -
- Nicky R (10/5): -
- Cynthia (10/5): Quaint with good food - What a lovely stay in Shakespeare's town. The whole ambiance is quaint and cozy. Bedroom is simple but comfortable. The pub downstairs serves good pints, delicious wine and tasty food (go for the beef pie and eggs benedict for breakfast!). Staff is friendly. Very practical location to explore around. Highly recommend it. Plus, I forgot an item in my bedroom and they were very helpful about it, which is a sign of a great service. Nothing, great stay.
- Angela (7/5): -
- Paul (9/5): -
- Fernanda (5/5): - Lovely breakfast, excellent location, friendly staff Lovely old property decent size bedroom let down by dirty bathroom tiles in shower cubicle, mouldy grout & silicone
- clare (9/5): -
- Veronica (9/5): It was perfect for one night. Great location close to shopping, restaurants, and theaters. FDefinitely needs bigger heat - The property was cozy and conveniently located to the theater I was attending. It was also nice having the pub nearby for a late night snack and for breakfast. The room was cold at night. A couple of heavier blankets would have been appreciated. The light switch in the bathroom was a bit high for this vertically challenged person. :)
- Keyte (10/5): Very good location. Friendly staff and nice breakfast - The location Nothing
- Phil (9/5): Great location good food and excellent room - Clean and modern room comfy bed
Good breakfast Not much parking
- Rosie (7/5): Great location and friendly staff. - Great location, nicely decorated room with high ceilings and nice little touches in room like biscuits. Very very steep stairs to get up to get to rooms 1-5. Exceptionally difficult with a walking stick and baby bump!
- NANCY (8/5): Was excellent place for visiting the theatre and town - Perfect for what we needed. Bonus seeing the beautiful Christmas lights. The shower door way and lower part of the shower dirty
- Nicola (9/5): -
- Norbert (9/5): Very enjoyable - Situated in excellent xx near the town centre and river Avon
- David (9/5): Great hotel and pub. Good price. Friendly staff - Close to centre. Nice bar and restaurant area. Large beer garden at the front. The room was small but nicely decorated and comfortable. All the staff were friendly with a smile. Only a few car parking spaces on site. Only the car parking.
