Guest Reviews
- John (8/5): - The staff was very welcoming. I arrived very early and they were still able to get me into my room. When I advised them that I was taking the train to Kandy the next morning, they said that they would have a sack breakfast ready (waters, boiled egg, bananas and a very good breakfast sandwich).
The WiFi was good and the TV had several English language channels.
Overall, a good value in Ella. I would recommend this hotel to friends and family.
Also, check out the Rose Cabin Mexican Restaurant just down the road. Very good nachos, considering you are in a mountain village in the middle of Sri Lanka.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - The staff, particularly the man at the front desk (I forgot his name!) were so genuinely friendly and accomodating from the second I arrived.
He answered all of my questions, smiled a lot and made me feel safe as a solo female traveller.
On my last day when I had to leave at 6am to get the early train, he woke up and prepared my breakfast in a little to-go bag for my journey.
Exceptional service in a really convenient location, very close to all the attractions like 9 arch bridge, little Adam’s peak and the main strip of shops in Ella. Yes the room is basic but very clean and very affordable! Would definitely recommend!
- Verified traveler (8/5): - great place to stay in Ella.
Pleasant staff......
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Great location in a quiet area, really enjoyed the breakfast and staff. Wish we had more than 2 nights here
- Verified traveler (6/5): - The hotel was ok overall but not quite 3 star. Somewhere in the 2 star range. No pool but not needed. Location ok rooms a good size facilities in room ok. Bathrooms just ok.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Nettes Hotel in super Lage mir sehr netten und zuvorkommendem Personal. Das Frühstück wird auf der Dachterrasse serviert und ist gut. Leider ganz ganz mieses Internet im Zimmer.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - We stayed for one night before catching the train and would recommend! It’s close to the main road but far enough it’s quiet and safe. The staff was very nice and helpful!
- Verified traveler (6/5): - Ella is so small town so most of the hotels are all within 10 minutes walking from the city center. Here the location was also good, not at the main road. However, there was a lot construction work going on in the neighborhood so that caused noise in the early mornings. Room was clean, large enough and powerful AC. The view from the balcony was disappointment. Breakfast really basic Sri Lankan style. I think there are better value for money hotels available in Ella but this was okay too.
- Michel (8/5): une étape à Ella - Convenable pour une soirée étape. Bruyant en début de soirée, mais très calme ensuite. Petit déjeuner Buffet copieux.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Good location. Modern hotel with very helpful staff. A bit noisey when we were there but that might be just the building work nearby.
- Alexander (8/5): Nice hotel away from the city center. - The hotel had a good location away from the noise in the city center, close to good restaurants and a nice rooftop view. The service was great and they made me breakfast at 6.50 in the morning because I was going on a hiking trip, even tho the breakfast starts at 7.30 normally.
The rooms was not quite as good, there was no AC and no Mini-fridge, so the room was very warm and the fan that was on the wall didn't help much. And you always had to drink your water "warm" which is not very nice in the heat of Sri Lanka.
The breakfast was pretty standard but good, I would probably recommend the hotel if you don't have a problem with a warmer room and no fridge.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Sehr schönes hotel mit ruhiger lage in ella. Dennoch sind alle bars und restaurants in 3 minuten zu fuß erreichbar. Eine klare Empfehlung
- Kelham (8/5): Good overall - Enjoyed our stay at Ella rock the staff were very friendly and helpful. Room was basic but you get what you pay for and very central to everything
- Ole (6/5): - Hotell i god stand, men frokosten var dårlig, til tider kaldt vann i dusjen, ofte kom det strømbrudd. Lokasjonen var god, og hyggelig personell
- Verified traveler (6/5): Don't stay in a standard double - Don't stay in a standard double room, and be careful about trusting what people say as refunds for unspeakable rooms aren't given.
I booked this hotel through another site for one night and hotels for the second. The bed in the standard room was so bad it caused me back issues, so decided to share my travel partners room for night 2. They had promised to refund the second night for the room I didnt stay in but then once gone this didn't happen and turns out it was a lie. Probably not helped by hotels.com who have been sub par on my Sri Lanka trip.
My travel partner had a better double which was a good room and comfortable bed too. But just be careful who and what you belive.
- Kelly (10/5): Great place to stay in Ella - Great location near town. Near restaurants. Hot shower. Comfortable bed. Clean room. Helpful staff. Great local options at breakfast. Good laundry service. Really can't flaw this place. Only thing is WiFi only worked in some places in the room, but I think that was probably only our room as it was the further from the router. I would definitely stay again and recommend.
- Klara (8/5): - A nice hotel located just off the main street so it is very quiet.
- Sandra (8/5): Recomendable 100% - Habitación limpia, buen desayuno y personal amable. Lo recomendaría sin dudar, alejado de la calle principal la cual es muy ruidosa
- Marcus (10/5): - Lovely breakfast on the rooftop. Nice staff at the hotel
- Ragu (10/5): - Amazing staff, rooftop breakfast was great. Located very close to the main shopping area of Ella. Ella is still a developing suburb hence don’t expect hugely fancy accommodation here. Ella Rock House was comfortable. WiFi was reliable. Would recommend.
- Verified traveler (8/5): One night in Ella - Friendly staff, ok location. Good breakfast.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Great and clean budget hotel - We had such a good stay at this hotel! The staff was very friendly and made sure we got everything we need. The room we had was nice and clean and had a nice little balcony. The bed wasnt extremely comfortable, but good enough for a few nights. Breakfast was pretty good too! Location is great, close to everything and it was pretty quiet at night. Definitely recommend staying here if you're on a budget, but need a good and clean hotel.
- Alexandre (8/5): great location. - Great location, near city center but far enough so that's its not noisy. Good breakfast.
- Spencer (8/5): - Hotel was nice enough and close to the center of Ella, good location if you want to walk up the hill to go see 9 arches bridge or little Adams peak. The pictures they show online are for the new building and we got stuck with a room in the older one, it wasn’t bad but just not as clean and new looking. Lots of ants in the bathroom
- Allison (8/5): Not bad - Ella Rock was good enough. I stayed there 2 nights and was in the room/building next to the main building so I’m not sure if the rooms are different btwn the buildings. I didn’t have aircon which was a little warm but I managed. The shower had ants all over it but granted the window is open to the outside. The ants didn’t really bother me but they were there. Also, the toilet bowl had a crack in it that they had sealed up but it was leaking at some point. The room itself is quite large. The staff were friendly and accommodating. The location is good, walkable to everything in town and near little Adams peak.
THERE ARE PUPPIES living across the street (as of mid June) that are the cutest and sweetest puppies ever. They are not affiliated with the hotel but they made my stay there extra special as I was able to play with them. If you see them, please be kind to them.
All in all it’s 50/50 whether I would stay at Ella stock again.
- TJ (8/5): - Close to everything but use the tuk tuk’s. Costs you nothing to get around in them. Hotel is nothing special but the staff were good and friendly and helpful.
- Spencer (8/5): - Hotel was nice, one issue is that’s there is an older building next to the new property. The pictures they show is all of the new building so when we got put in the old building we were a little surprised. It wasn’t really dirty but definitely wasn’t as new and clean as the pictures. Also the bathroom was a bit moldy and had a bunch of ants. Free breakfast was good. Also good that the hotel isn’t on the main strip so a little quite. Location was great since it’s close to town but a close walk to 9-arches bridge and Little adams peak
- Spencer (6/5): Mediocre - The place was alright, the breakfast was very yummy and the view from the rooftop restaurant was lovely. The room could use a bit of an upgrade. We were given the first floor room which is right beside the lobby and could hear everything all night long. The room was also very moist and hot. The shower had a window looking into the lobby as well.. privacy was limited.
- david (8/5): Good location and clean - The hotel was ok but we were only there one night and had too leave early in the morning for the train and they not have hot water at 5.30
- Verified traveler (8/5): clean and well located - We had a family room. It was large, clean and had a TV (limited channels) and a fridge. The staff were pleasant, although very keen to get us taxis at slightly higher prices than we were quoted in town! The beds were not comfortable and the quilt was not big enough to cover the bed - it was quite cold at night and another blanket should have been provided. Breakfast, which was ok, is served on the roof top. We had an early start to catch a train and were pleased with the packed breakfast they provided on our last morning. I would recommend for a short stay only.
- Christopher (8/5): nice little hotel! good location - laundry service was a bit expensive but very convenient. room was good but view from balcony looked over a building site. hotel is down a little side road so room was quiet at night. good location to all tourist attractions in Ella. really good breakfast too 😁
- Verified traveler (4/5): Not as shown in the pictures - The room that we have been given is actually in a different building (an older one) than what they show on the pictures.
- George (8/5): Great spot - Great spot in Ella. Less than 10min walk from train station and easy enough to find. Small town so close enough to everything really. Staff were happy to arrange a taxi to our next destination but we had found an alternative cheaper elsewhere. Breakfast was excellent. simple buffet of fruit, eggs various ways, toast, some curries/Sri Lankan pancakes.
For what we paid I would have no problems staying here again.
- Aaron (6/5): Ok location - We stayed in the older of the 2 buildings, which isn’t shown in the hotel photos, so that was misleading. Bathroom was old and not very clean, no air conditioning in room, breakfast was decent for a free breakfast. Staff were helpful and did pack breakfast for us when we left early before breakfast started.
- irina (10/5): Awsome stay - I loved everythong about this place! Didnt want to leave. Coffee/ tea in room was great addition.
- Karen (10/5): - We had a very nice stay at Ella Rock House. The hotel is not right on the main road in Ella, but close enough to everything we needed. It was about a 10 min walk to the train station and Adam's Peak trail. There were several good restaurants within a five minute walk as well. The management was very helpful with directions, booking an early morning tuk tuk to the train and letting my friend use their phone to make a call to her bank back home. We were not aware there was not air condition, but it got cool enough at night that we managed with the door and windows open to stay cool. The room was basic, but clean and had good wifi as there was several routers in the building. Ella is a gorgeous area and this was a suitable hotel choice for my friend and myself. Thank you!
- Ashwin (8/5): Good short term budget stay - Good clean budget stay with very basic facilities and budget breakfast. Location is noisy due to construction work everywhere but close to Main Road.
- Verified traveler (6/5): Disappointing experience - I reviewed Ella guesthouses considerably before choosing this one. I am surprised by its high rating.
Our room had an ant infestation, which was resolved after the 3rd attempt. The patio doors do not close properly which allows every noise (dogs barking) and more insects to enter. The buffet breakfast was lukewarm and unappetizing.
On the positive the staff were friendly and took our comments seriously and tried to help. The beds were clean and comfortable. The bathroom was also clean with a good shower.
- Miffy (8/5): Great location - It was very close to the Main Street and there are many good restaurants around the hotel. The room was clean and comfortable. Only bath towels were provided and they were kind of damp. The bathroom has poor ventilation. Hot water was not running after 10pm. I only found out, after talking to the manger following day, that they turn off the water heater at certain time. If you use hot water at night, it would be better to ask them to keep it on.
The manger was very nice guy.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - The main part of the hotel is okay but the side house seems a grade below
- Gaurav (6/5): Decent hotel but with no scenic view - Stayed here for 2 nights.
Good
1) Staff were helpful
2) Clean hotel
3) Walking distance to the Main Street, eating outlets and convenient stores
4) Breakfast was decent but could be better
Bad
1) Boring location. Constructions going on around the hotel
2) Frequent electricity cut off
- luke (10/5): - Just of the main drag but close enough, staff very helpful, comfortable bed would recommend!
- mike (10/5): Nice place - A short walk from downtown, so nice and quite. Breakfast was ok, nothing special but got the job done. The staff were always very helpful. I would stay here again.
- Jason (8/5): Nice place - Clean, comfortable place and very close to the Main Street to go for a drink or food.
- Nnsssaa (6/5): overpriced for what it was - Mixed feelings as there were issues with the WiFi which meant it largely didn't work for our stay. Breakfast was a buffet and we really enjoyed it. Felt the hotel was overpriced for what you got though. A mosquito net would have been a bonus as the room was fan only with no mosquito netting on the open window in to the bathroom. However on our very early departure the hotel made a lovely take away breakfast for the train.
- Marc (10/5): Comfortable room and bed - Our stay in Ella Rock House was very pleasant. Rooms are so comfortable that we decided to stay 2 days more. Rooms are spacious and clean. Bed is so comfortable and overall was great value for the money. Staff was helpful and although it's not exactly in the city center it's just 5 or 10 minutes walking to the main street. In his range of price it's probably the best choice.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Cheap and kind of cheerful - No frills hotel in good location. Staff are friendly but place could do with a good clean.
- Jeppe (8/5): Fair, might come back - In general, we found that Ella Rock House was one of the better places to stay in the area within the price range. However, it should be noted that the rooms are a little bit humid - The bed sheets and room in general felt "moist", which is one of the things that we really dislike in hotels. Apart from that, the wifi wasn't great - We ended up using our phones with Dialog sim cards as wifi hotspots instead of the hotel wifi.
The hotel is about 5 mins walk from the "main part" of Ella - There is only a single good restaurant close by (AK Ristoro). We liked it as it meant that the area wasn't full of tourists, but it might not be for everyone's taste.
As mentioned, within the price range this is a good option, and if the room hadn't been humid, we would probably come back.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Very friendly and helpfull staff - We had a most pleasant stay. Staff was very helpfull and friendly. They provided a small cot for our baby even before we asked for it. Breakfast was delicious. We had a nice balcony, but without view though.
- Leslie (10/5): Secluded getaway - We were taken great care of. The owner arranged a spectacular safari for us.
