Guest Reviews
- Louise (10/5): Highly recommend - Welcoming and comfortable after a very long walk. Enjoyed our supper and had a delicious breakfast. Heather, a member of staff, was lovely and helped us with directions to our next destination.
- Sarah (10/5): Just a perfect night - Everything… very high standards… wonderful staff .. great room and amazing food
- Julie (10/5): -
- Liz (10/5): Lovely community owned pub with rooms. - Lovely community owned pub. Warm welcome from friendly staff. Small but comfortable and beautifully presented twin room. Great food. Friendly, welcoming locals.
- Richard (10/5): Excellent- looking forward to returning - Warm, welcoming. Nothing
- paul (6/5): -
- Anne (9/5): - Everything was ideal for our overnight stay while walking Coast to Coast. Comfortable beds and lovely food. The staff were very welcoming and friendly.
- Pete (10/5): -
- Jim (10/5): - Our room was detached from the main building. It was quiet and comfortable. Food was very good quality. Everything was great.
- jayne (9/5): Excellent value for money - Everything Nothing
- Stephanie (9/5): Fantastic hotel/pub with excellent food and drink. - What a fab hotel and pub. Great food and choice of real ales.
Very good breakfast.
So peaceful and quiet at night, very nice room and lovely big shower. The booking stated big double bed but it was only standard so, coupled with overly soft, unsupportive pillows, it resulted in a poor night’s sleep. I would have chosen a twin if I’d known the double bed was not large. That was the only negative thing.
- Steve (10/5): -
- Charles (10/5): I don’t want to tell anyone about it. EVER as otherwise I will never be able to stay again - Beautifully presented. Lovely quiet village. Simply perfect Nothing
- John (10/5): Very comfortable bed, quiet environment in lovely scenery, friendly staff, fine breakfast. - The breakfast was excellent, beautifully cooked and presented. The staff were very friendly.
- vychinski (10/5): Great place to stay. Great food and lovely friendly staff - Comfortable and clean Nothing
- Rosemary (10/5): Great community run pub - Lovely staff, great atmosphere, good food and comfy bed Having to leave after only one night. We would have liked to stay longer and will definitely go back
- Marcus (10/5): Excellent! Friendly staff, rooms were fantastic. Great food and beer -
- Sasha Arabadji (10/5): -
- Paul (9/5): Charming honest community pub - Proper honest village pub saved by the community. Great location for access to the lakes or easy access off the motorway if you want an overnight stop with character
- Hannah (8/5): Lovely room and food, but poor value due to rigid breakfast times and unexpected dog fees - The room itself was lovely and provided a great space for a short break. We also really enjoyed the evening meal, which was of a high standard. Throughout our stay, the staff were consistently friendly and welcoming, and we were lucky that a dog-friendly room was actually available when we arrived, despite our oversight in the booking process. The stay ended up being much more expensive than we anticipated due to a £15.00 cleaning charge for the dog that wasn't clear to us beforehand. Communication was also an issue regarding breakfast; there were no serving times listed on the website, and because we had to leave at 8:00 AM, the staff weren't able to move the service forward. This meant we paid for a "well-priced" stay including breakfast that we couldn't actually eat. While the staff were nice, they weren't particularly flexible when it came to these logistical hurdles.
- Bernadette (9/5): -
- Guy (9/5): A great launch pad for our days walking in the lakes. - Fantastic breakfast with huge choice (including Marmite and Stokes Brown Sauce) and delicious vegan Sausages!. Nohting else
- Sue (10/5): Spotlessly clean with lovely finishing touches. - Amazingly comfortable beds and standard of accommodation excellent. Everything was spotlessly clean with lovely finishing touches. Nothing.
- AIKATERINI (10/5): Such a great place to stay - Amazing location, really nicely decorated with lots of cosy character features. The staff were wonderful and my room was super comfortable and even had a bath tud!!! N/A
- Mary (10/5): Lovely homely atmosphere with log burner.Food is amazing and helpful staff.very clean and well run - Comfortable warm and helpful staff and beautiful food Car park could have been better sign posted
- Neil (8/5): Comfortable and when located for walking in the area. A very pleasant pub with comfortable rooms and good food. - Very nice and clean room with separate private bathroom. Food was good. Limited parking on the street but there are a few other spaces in a small car park by the shop which you can use.

- lynn (10/5): Good experience - Staff were very friendly, food was very good. Our room was a very good standard and the bed linen was good quality and very cosy. We had a lovely stay and would certainly stay again
- James (10/5): Excellent staff and food made this stay special. - Well restored by keeping the important features that make it a village inn. No complaints.
- Ben (10/5): - Outstanding service, food and comfort, couldn't fault a thing.
- HAP64068 (10/5): Our third visit --- our fourth is slated for 2026! - We chose this place because the community came together to re-start its pub. They added the guest rooms with locally sourced products and labor, they use locally sourced food products when possible, they provide employment for local residents. (King Charles (as Prince) was one of the investors) The STORY of the Mardale Inn is an remarkable as the quality of the inn-stay itself! We also enjoyed strolling around the area listening to and observing the sheep.
- Kevin (10/5): Food and staff were excellent. Dine in the pub. The chocolate fondant is fantastic. - Breakfast was excellent Nothing
- Neil (8/5): -
- Sam (10/5): Really comfortable and relaxing stay in a warm, friendly, and accommodating pub. Loved it. - An excellent stay. We were made so welcome. Arrived late, but they kept the kitchen open for us so we could have supper. The room was immaculately clean, very spacious and exceedingly comfortable. The food (and the beer) was delicious! Sadly, we had to leave early, so didn't get a chance to explore the countryside, but they had put out loads of maps to help us if we had the time. Next time, for sure ...
- Tim (9/5): -
- Nicole (10/5): A True Community Gem in the Lake District - We had a wonderful stay at the Mardale Inn!
It’s such a special place – a true community pub that’s clearly supported and loved by the people around it. The rooms are beautifully decorated with lots of thoughtful details, and the staff were warm, welcoming, and genuinely caring.
You can really feel the heart and soul that go into this place. Highly recommended! –
- David (9/5): Memorable. - Extremely helpful and pleasant staff. Good food. great atmosphere. Nothing.
- Adam (10/5): Brilliant community owned pub with great rooms and fabulous food - Lovely room
Dog friendly
Amazing project-community owned and high quality Pub in an amazing setting
Please support this brilliant project that provides a high quality service and great food Nothing at all
- Mark (9/5): Brilliant! - Victoria ..who checked us in, ran the bar, served us dinner..all done with flair, humour, professionalism. The rooms were great, confy and well appointed. Nothing..small point but both our meats at dinner (venison and steak) were poor quality. Given the quality of the rest of the food it stood out.
- Andrew (9/5): -
- Michael (10/5): -
- Jim (10/5): - Location was great, just off the M6 so will be using The Mardale again for business. Food and drink choice great, local ingredients, great quality!! Breakfast again was really good, great choice and good quality. Parking was a challenge however appreciate the location makes this difficult so no real complaints.

- Sonia (10/5): -
- Waudby (10/5): -
- Tracey (10/5): A big welcome, comfy bed and great food - Stayed here whilst walking the coast to coast - received a lovely warm welcome, lovely room with everything we needed. Separate private bathroom with a bath .. if you are walking you know what a treat that is. Lovely dinner and breakfast. Great staff, highly recommend. Perfect to get back onto the coast to coast path at Brampton Grange. Everything was great
- Gail Jeffcoate (10/5): been twice and will go again - e with a river, shop, hepful garage and pub really good
- Peter (10/5): -
- Linda (8/5): I had a lovely stay. I hope to be returning. - The room was very comfortable. The pub is a little gem. The staff are efficient, friendly. The village deserve all the success with the effort they have made.
- Alexandrina (10/5): Good community owned venture using local products - Good size room with comfortable bed and good shower.
Food very good for dinner and breakfast.
We liked location but it may be too remote for some.
Good location for walkers and cyclists.
- Dee (10/5): A wonderful stay, exceeding expectations - A fabulous community-run inn in a delightful village. Room was clean, well-appointed and comfortable. Dinner and breakfast- delicious and generous.
Highly recommend.
- harrison (5/5): Indifference - Nice location, peaceful, proper old pub Male staff not very inviting, indifferent and unhelpful. We ask for tea on arriving and got half a cup each(pot must have been for one). Service not great
- Joanna (9/5): -
- Gayle (10/5): -
- Jacqueline (10/5): An excellent place to stop and recharge on the C2C - Food was excellent +++
Accommodation was quality, comfortable and spotlessly clean.
Staff were very helpful
- Michael (10/5): First rate in every way. - Tranquil pub with super clean, super comfortable room, excellent dinner food, great breakfast and superb staff. Highly recommended! Nada
- Robert (9/5): Village Perfection - Quintessential Cumbrian village pub, in a great area for nature and walking. A brilliant example of what can be achieved when a community pulls together to make the pub central to local life whilst welcoming visitors with faultless food, accommodation and hospitality.
The pub is deservedly in The Good Beer Guide, with 3 well kept local ales and friendly attentive bar staff. Couldn't find any faults.
- Barbara (9/5): -
- Graham (8/5): -
- Richard (10/5): - The room was clean and comfortable. The pub itself is charming with excellent food on the menu. Breakfast was great and set us up for a long day of walking and taking in the views of the nearby Haweswater.
- Charles (9/5): A very comfortable, relaxed and friendly couple of days. - Breakfast was excellent, service prompt and friendly. Dinner the same, the whole atmosphere was just what you want from a welcoming local pub/restaurant.
Excellent local walks recommended and set out to cover all levels of fitness and enthusiasm.
Our room was in the annexe, about 50 yards away, and was very nicely fitted out. It was large and airy, spotlessly clean, an extremely comfortable bed, super shower, etc. There was a small separate ante room as we came in before entering the bedroom, just right for removing outer clothing and footwear. We also could feed the dog in this room, and it was large enough for a dog bed too.
Dog friendly, treats and a bowl were provided in the room. To complain about anything would be nitpicking, I'd have to think very hard to find anything that could have been better, and if I succeeded in thinking of something it would be trivial, not anything that affected the pleasure of out stay (e.g. some of the footpaths recommended were not the most obvious on the ground).
- Alistair (9/5): Memorable -
- Richard (10/5): - Welcoming, clean, excellent room.
- james (9/5): Fantastic spot, beautiful countryside and apparently it never rains in the Lakes - Bags of charm, great location and food was super Nothing
- Lewington (10/5): Brilliant, lucky find for us:: we will definitely be back for the people, the food and the vibe, - Very warm, friendly approach from all the staff we met, but combined with excellent service. The food was simple, unpretentious pub grub, but clearly home made and superbly cooked (both dinner and breakfast.) The whole place is a lovely little old-fashioned country pub and it doesn't pretend to be anything grander or more sophisticated than that, which is what makes it outstanding: you feel instantly at home. No criticisms at all.
- Roly (10/5): Excellent - Clean and tidy, good beer very good food, comfortable bed, what’s not to like, Parking
- Ian (10/5): -
- Julie (10/5): I’ll come again. - Beautiful location, friendly welcome, great room and good food. I loved it all.
- antony (9/5): Just a great place to stay if you want peace and quiet - Great staff , clean , comfortable Nothing really

- Fiona (10/5): Excellent, would definitely go back again. - The location was delightful - gorgeous little village next to the mountains. The room was beautiful - really tastefully designed and comfortable. I had a dog-friendly room and it was really well set up for a dog - it had a little porch with a towel and dog bowl. The staff were friendly and helpful, and the food was very good. Highly recommend.

- Griggs (8/5): Enjoyed the stay would go back again - Not the room we thought we booked we ended up in an annex but it was good, Very clean just a short walk from the pub.
