Guest Reviews
- Nico (9/5): Superb - Despite some communication issues, we had a really good time at the Cabana
- Ute (8/5): Best location in Ella!!! - Ella Bamboo Cabana is an exceptional place to stay in Ella and an unforgettable experience for travelers. The breakfast is outstanding – fresh, plentiful, and featuring a variety of delicious local dishes to start your day perfectly. The view of the stunning Kuda Rawana waterfall from the balcony is absolutely breathtaking and makes for a magical atmosphere. The location is ideal, just a short distance from Ella’s town center (10 minutes walk along the railway) and FIVE STEPS!!! from the famous (Nine Arches Bridge-Ella-Kandy) railway, making it convenient while still feeling secluded.
The surrounding nature is simply incredible, with monkeys, squirrels, and colorful birds often spotted on the roof or in the nearby trees. The staff are exceptionally helpful and go above and beyond to ensure that every guest has an amazing stay, offering tips, advice, and friendly service. The serene environment creates a perfect retreat, combining tranquility with access to all the attractions of Ella.
Being so close to nature while enjoying such a comfortable stay is truly unique. If you’re looking for a place that offers spectacular views, delicious food, warm hospitality, and a connection to nature, Ella Bamboo Cabana is the perfect choice. Description how to get there have a lot of potential for improvement 😉
- Romaine (4/5): - Not helpful. No coffee in room. No amenities. Wouldn’t recommend!!!
- Udari (9/5): Superb - It is very nice hotel. Its very nice hill veiw in hotel balcony. Located on the way to Ella rock 02km walk on Railway way track. Nice waterfall veiw seems to the hotel balcony area. All staff are very supportive to serve their service. Its center of city area also. Its valuable for us. Very calmly to stay cuples.. lovely and very attractive area to forgiens also. Morning train is going. Its very nice look. Room area also very comfortable. All facilities are everything was ok. Hotel meal are very teasty. We are recommending to enjoy with hotel.......🤗
- Sukmayanti (10/5): Exceptional -
- Felix (10/5): Nice view up from the City trouble - The Location was beautifull, Great view and the Host Roshan Uncle was the best. He was so kind to us and we felt very comfortable at this place. And you only walk like 10 minutes to the City. We would come again!
- Hilde (10/5): A stay in the jungle - This place is magical! Truly a stay in the jungle. There’s no road to the cabin so the last part you have to walk on the railway. However the staff were really helpful and carried our suitcases the whole way - so do recommend to pack lightly. The place was amazing and the staff were so kind and helpful. Highly recommend!
- Lasantha (10/5): Exceptional -
- Heather (2/5): - This cabana is no longer available to stay in they took our money of course and when we arrived they showed us to a youth hostel place. I was not happy and told them to take down the bamboo cabana as an option on last minute. They did provide us with a better room in another building but I was not happy.
Beware
- randikaf2015 (2/5): DO NOT GO!! FULL OF RATS IN THE ROOM - I did check in this Cabana on 28 Aug 2023 . On the very night while sleeping i foind rats were running on my bed and room .Do not go!!!
A dodgy place. Owener does not respond. We had to leave the place and find another accomodation. Ruined our night.DO NOT GO !
- Leonita (10/5): - The rooms were very clean and nice. We were very warmly welcomed and the staff was always friendly and very helpful. Very tasty breakfast. Highly recommended. Everything here was beautiful in nature. A whole cabanna to yourself with lots of things to use. I would not recommend this hotel with heavy suitcases as there are a lot of steep stairs where it is very tedious to carry the suitcases. Rather backpacks.
- Indiaka (10/5): Exceptional - Beautiful view
Friendly staff
Delicious food
- Lorenz (8/5): Very good - The view from the balcony was astonishing. The staff is very nice and the reception offers you to help with everything you need (taxi, train, delayed breakfast, laundry etc). The moscito net had many holes so we had to put our own on top of it, otherwise we would have been full of insects.
- Humera (10/5): well we booked the cabana but due to electric issue we were unable to stay at the place. the owner of the place was prov -
- Verified traveler (10/5): Beautiful location in the middle of the nature - The guest house has an amazing location with a beautiful view in the middle of the nature. Super calm and nice and in the same time Ella city center is only a 5 min tuk-tuk ride away. We got great help when needed and an amazing breakfast served on the balcony every morning. Great value for money in an unique location.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - The property is located in a beautiful part of Ella. A walk along the train tracks to town is a unique experience. The breakfast served on the veranda was delightful. Shehan, looked after us exceptionally well.
- cassandram4 (10/5): Beautiful - Thank you Shehan for looking after us. We had a wonderful time. The cabana was delightful. The view was stunning. Shehan served breakfast on the veranda each morning which was superb. He looked after us so well that I did not want to leave. The trip to town on the train track was fun and made me feel like a child. Loved Ella. Love Bamboo cabana.
- Fabian (10/5): Beautiful view - Really enjoyable and beautiful located place to stay in Ella. We were two people and stayed in the upper apartment which offered us a brilliant view over the nature area. The straff was extremly friendly and helped us with information about the city.
Our Sri Lankan breakfast on the terasse was fresh and very tasty.
We would definitivt come back!
- ann (10/5): On the tracks - Great two night stay . A little out of Ella itself but an easy and interesting 15 mins walk in along the track. Met by the staff at the end of temple rd. wonderful huge breakfast each day. Anything required, the staff will do what they can’t to get it for you. Fantastic views, amazing walks on your doorstep. Would stay again.
- benjowilson (10/5): Wow! - We stayed here for 2 nights. When we arrived we got a tuk tuk to take us here (350LKR). We were dropped off at the bottom of a gravel road next to the train tracks and told to walk down the rail line. About 100 meters down we were met by a really friendly member of staff and an incredible view over the waterfall.
The room was spacious and clean with a mosquito net over the bed. We had WiFi that worked well and a tv that we didn’t need but good to have.
Ella is a 15 minute walk down the train line and you are supplied with a lantern which you should definitely make use of, or the torch on your phone! Maybe check the train times before walking down as it is pretty scary when a train comes and you have to jump into the hedge especially in the dark. A great experience we won’t forget though. We mixed walking to Ella and getting tuk tuks and the ranged between 350 and 500LKR.
We had breakfast on the first morning which was delicious but didn’t seem to stop coming. Fruit platter, toast, eggs, roti, dhal and a big pot of filter coffee.
Downsides (but not to us) could be that the lizards make lots of noise running over the metal roof, the train in the morning is a guaranteed alarm clock and the shower isn’t very hot or strong. But besides this it was one of my favourite stays in Sri Lanka.
For the price the stay was amazing!
- Verified traveler (10/5): - This place is amazing. One of the balconies/views we’ve ever had. This is more or less a cabin in the jungle so some of the facilities are basic but if the top floor is available this is a MUST book.
- Dana (10/5): - Staff is super friendly and helpful. View from the hotel is just amazing! All tourist, who passed by constantly were taking pictures of bamboo cabana :)
Great breakfast with fresh fruits and variety of food :) everything is close by. Really enjoyed staying there! Thank you for everything!
- AusTravelTeach (10/5): Fantastic waterfall view right on the railway! - We LOVED our stay here- we had to walk about 500m along the railway track to get here but SO worth it! We stayed in the upstairs room. The view is spectacular and the bed and bathroom were very good. Brekkie was good also.
Regarding some of the negative reviews on here- You obviously hear the trains through the night as the track is about 15m away from you- and you are surrounded by forest so naturally there will be noises from animals that are noisey- yes- the squirrels run around on the roof but you can’t exactly ask them to stop!
The people downstairs left their room light on and the curtains up at nighttime when they went to dinner so naturally their room filled with bugs- I think they were very unimpressed and demanding as they went elsewhere for the night- but with some common sense there would have been no issue! The host double checked that we were ok in our room afterwards (we were fine-bug free from putting our curtains down) and he was very helpful and found us a tuk tuk driver for the next leg of our trip. I would 100% stay here again if I come back!
- Stepmyra (8/5): Unique - Stayed here for two nights. The views are spectacular and the guy who was looking after us was such a warm friendly guy, didn't want to say goodbye. Breakfast was very comprehensive and the room was clean. You are definitely going to get close to nature, once you know what the sounds are though, it's all good! Would recommend it.
- Lan (2/5): Wish we had booked elsewhere - The guy working in the hotel was super nice and obliging but this was the only good thing about the place. The not so great view was obscured by opaque plastic boards to cover the stairs from the upstairs view. The room itself smelt badly of mould and mildew and the water in the bathroom was extremely hot - I assume it’s because they must use some kind of solar energy. There was no separate shower so the water drained past the toilet and down the drain in the opposite corner of the bathroom. The hotel is literally just on the railway so trains wake you very early in the morning and you can’t go back to sleep as the blinds are so thin the light wakes you up. We tried to cancel the other 4 nights of our stay but they refused but it was so bad we had to pay for 2 places instead of staying there as we had already paid. Would only recommend for highly budget conscious travellers who will already be waking up early to do the various Ella hikes.
- Zwinky1 (10/5): Such a unique place to stay in - From Ella train station we took a tuk-tuk, it will drop you off besides the train tracks. You just have to follow them for a short max. 5 mins walk and you will see the bamboo house on your right hand side. What a cute place. There is only 2 rooms, downstairs and upstairs. We booked the room downstairs. It is basic but clean, has a mosquito net and has a proper shower. My favourite part is the porch/balcony. Sitting out there, reading and watching the trains drive by. If you follow the train tracks it takes about 10-15 minutes to reach the town centre of Ella. It might be helpful to have a torch or head light if you are walking home after dinner. Breakfast is served on the balcony.
Some people that climb Ella Rock are walking on train tracks passing the Bamboo Cabana and of taking pictures of this cool place. I felt there were jealous of us staying at such a great place. ;)
On the balcony in the morning you can see monkeys and a giant squirrel. I would definately stay here again.
- ninah996 (10/5): Best stay ever in Ella! - We’ve been here for 2 nights and we loved bamboo cabana! The view is stunning and also the feeling of living near to the nature is so pure. The room is very nice and big enough for two people. Also the bad was very clean and well arranged. It’s clean and also the noise of the train is no problem. If you stay in ella, you’ll wake up early every day because you want to start your trips to ella rock, little Adam’s Peak and so on earl in the morning. The walk to the city center is no problem and if you have any flashlights it’s perfect. I would definitely recommend this place!
- BigBear90 (10/5): Perfect location - If you come to Ella via train, all you need to do is get off the train and walk back along the train tracks. It's a 10 minute walk from the room to the town, 10 minute walk to the start of Ella's Rock, it's just such a good location. The staff are super, helped us arrange a taxi, breakfasts were always brilliant. We stayed on the ground floor but the views would probably be better at the top but if it wasn't available i'd still stay on the ground floor. This accommodation needs to be rated a lot higher, it's a hidden gem!!
- kriseliz76 (8/5): Stunning place - Basic and unique accommodation right on the train track/ hiking trail. Definitely get the upstairs room for maximum views.
Bring earplugs as the squirrels/monkeys on the tin roof are quite noisy at night.
- chlooochloeeee (10/5): I am so glad we chose to stay at Ella Bamboo Cabana. The upstairs room exceeded our expectations. - The location of this property is its best feature. Right on the tracks, I loved watching the trains go by. Ella town a short walk one way and Ella rock, Kithal Ella railway station the other. Everyone who walked past would stop and admire Ella Bamboo Cabana.
The manager was a kind, humble man, readily available when we needed him.
Fantastic value for money.
- 8cecilias (8/5): Lovely bungalow close to Ella Rock - My boyfriend and I stayed here one night. We arrived in the evening, and ate before we came to the cabana which was a good idea since it's a little off from the town.
The room was cosy but had some holes in the mosquito-net. It didnt have any AC so ift was a litte misty, otherwise ok. The guy who owned the place is very friendly and helpful.
The breakfast at the balcony was amazing, the wiew along with tea, fresh fruit, white bread, eggs and srilankan pancakes. Since the railtrack is below it's closer to Ella rock than if you would have lived in the village. All togheter a calm place with lovely wiew and friendly staff!
- SamSensationsVoyage (10/5): Amazing place ! - Ideally located on the way to Ella Rock, the lovely house tree is the perfect place to visit Ella. In a nature aera we have met butterflies, squirrels and even monkeys on our balcony ! A magic time for nature lovers... And for others, you can see the famous train going down the house tree ! We have spent a great time here. The hosts are really kind and helpful. This place is one of the best value for money of our trip.
