Guest Reviews
- Michele (6/5): adequate - Location was good and staff were very good and overworked. Sydney was most helpful.
Breakfast was excellent. The first room I was given was right next to the stairs and opposite the billiard room. So noisy . I asked for a quiet room.
It was Sri Lankan New Year so a lot of locals travelling and I was a solo traveller.
I was moved to a room in the corner downstairs that was quiet, however it smelt mouldy.
I wouldn't stay here again.
- Nadeesha (10/5): - All are good
- Maria Jose (8/5): -
- CheeWee (7/5): - *friendly & helpful staff
*strong hot shower
*room is big and clean
*upgraded room *about 10mnt walk to town, post office, the grand hotel, etc
*simple american style breakfast, but get full.
*transport arrangements higher than others
- Marietta (7/5): our stay was just ok. - Shakeeb, the all around one man receptionist made our stay so much better! He was able to help me with my request and any information I needed. However, the property itself needs an update, the standard room was ok for
the price however the hotel facilities and
interior including the garden needs improvement.
- Mark (8/5): OK, distinctive older building, but in need of some attention - Distinctive 'historic looking' building, room was OK, near Victoria Park. Staff overall were OK. Bit of a steep walk up from the road (my girlfriend had hurt her foot, otherwise wouldn't have been an issue). Building needs a bit of care.
View from our room window was just of rubble (rooms at the front probably had a good view).
Breakfast was in the next door hotel, but the breakfast was OK.
- Christabelle (8/5): I would definitely recommend this hotel and stay again - Beautiful fireplace that was lit up after dinner. The rooms were decorated with period furnishings adding a lovely touch to the overall ambience. Small inconvenience in regards to access road to the hotel. Not suitable for elderly parents
- Lucia (9/5): - Bella struttura stile coloniale ed ottima colazione self service
- adrien (8/5): - The young guy at the reception super pro
The place looked nice an authentic
- Daniel (9/5): Charming colonial era building with kind helpful staff - The staff were very friendly and kind. They were also flexible as we swapped days at very short notice. The hotel is charming - a colonial era bungalow. The front rooms are enormous and come with an adjoining sitting area. The building has not been modernised so won't suit everybody. Location is good. Sadly a huge concrete building is going up immediately behind the bungalow which will ruin the setting.
- Mille (7/5): Nice staff and fireplace! - Cozy fireplace and super nice staff, and super close location to the city.
- Graeme (8/5): -
- WENHAO (10/5): - Cozy room. Good arrangement for Horton Plains. The driver Selvam gives good tour advices.
- Lazar (6/5): Good service, room extremely dark - The location is really good - next to the park, which is the best thing to see in Nuwara Eliya, and about 10 minutes walk from the center.
The room is spacious and well-furnished.
The breakfast on the first day was below average (everything was cold, including the omelet), but on the second day it was excellent. No idea why it was so different, as we ate at exactly the same time on both days.
The young man who works as the manager was excellent - very polite, professional and helpful. The room was very dark. There is a window, but behind it, about 1 meter away, is a wall of another house. So even in daytime, the room felt like a basement. This is something I couldn't see from the photos, and it made me very uncomfortable. Considering the price of the room, I think the situation should be described here on the website.
Furthermore, the room was cold, and if you want a heater you need to pay extra. However, they did light a fireplace for us in the evening, which helped, but they only do it after 8 pm.
- Maria (8/5): -
- Garçon (8/5): Pas mal pour un court séjour a Nuwara eliya - Super acceuil, réceptionniste au top malgré notre heure d'arrivée tardive
Lit très confortable et couettes bien chaudes
Bon petit dej copieux
No tenía calefactor.
- Evangelos Stampoulis (10/5): - Hotel is a colonial style, very beautiful building. Breakfast was the best we had in Sri lanka. Staff was very helpful. Gave us tips for the city, we also booked a tour to the tea factory with them. Walking distance to the city center. Overall wonderful stay. Do not skip Nuwara eliya and this hotel.
- Miguel (9/5): -
- F (9/5): Heerlijk - Romantische Engelse kamer.
- Helene & Christopher (2/5): - No heating, or you pay 3000 sr rupees extra for a portable heater... so we froze in a 16-degree bedroom. TV didn't work. The shower was either too hot or too cold. Wall plugs were broken. Wifi coverage was non-existent despite the extender being close by. Bleak bedroom with old-fashioned furniture. Not cosy at all like the rest of the hotel.
- Ana Heredero (9/5): -
- Ashen Sithara (10/5): -
- Ashen Sithara (10/5): - We really enjoyed our staying here.
Unique experience and amazing manager at the hotel!
- Narasinghe (2/5): Very poor - Breakfast ok
Location very comfortable Face some difficulties with hot water problems.
No shower cubicles
Not working TV
- Ann (9/5): Like Nuwara Eliya town - an insight into the country’s colonial history - A taste of colonial grandeur at a good price. A very clean and comfortable room and really helpful staff. The mainly European menu in the restaurant may be to your taste but personally I would have liked more Sri Lankan options.
- Ivan (5/5): Passable - Breakfast was good. There were problems with plumbing. Hot water was not working in the beginning. The staff had to fix it. Pipes in the bathroom were leaking and there was constantly water on the floor.
- Salvin (7/5): Old colonial - Old colonial charm. Quite quirky. Unusual fixtures and fittings. Oozed history. Bathroom/shower room was rather basic. Not the cleanest. Some mould, but perhaps not surprising in an old colonial hotel.
- Giancarlo (10/5): Amazing breakfast with special view on the park from the balcony - We’ve been upgraded from the Treverne to the Panoramic view hotel, without increasing price.
So the room was really nice, with fridge, a special view from the balcony, king size bed, amazing breakfast.
- Mark (10/5): Exceptional -
- Suzanne (8/5): Very good - Breakfast was good, location was great, colonial period building so great for old English lovers, as period features
- Roshan (9/5): Superb - We really appreciated the warm hospitality There is nothing to complain
- Alistair (7/5): For fans of colonial buildings - Old colonial style hotel. Reminded me of British B&B in the 70's
The location is excellent. Unfortunately they are building a new big hotel at the back of the Trevene which spoils the overall ambience of this small hotel.
- Catherine (6/5): About 50 years of neglect - Shakim, who was managing the Trevene part of the hotel, was a very kind and helpful man.
The breakfast was good, eaten in the Panorama next door. This hotel is desperately in need of refurbishment. All the money has been spent on the hotel next door and another new block in front. It is such a shame as it could be a good heritage hotel.
There is no heating, although Shakim lit the fire for us in the evenings.
- Aaron (10/5): Exceptional -
- Johnson (8/5): Very good -
- Debby (8/5): Very good -
- Saurabh (8/5): Very good - The staff was very helpful
- Radhesh (10/5): Exceptional -
- Claire (8/5): Very good - A very enjoyable stay in this old colonial bungalow. Excellent quiet location just on the edge of town. Extremely comfortable large bed and whilst we didn't think we would need the duvet and blanket, we did!! It's definitely a lot cooler here. Buffet breakfast served in the hotel right next door, and a kettle in your room, which was a nice touch. But the very best thing here was the excellent and friendly staff. The shower could do with an update, including better plumbing for the hot water, which was unreliable.
- Bina (7/5): Good - Location, close to town. Good breakfast buffet.
- Stephen (8/5): Very good -
- Yvonne (6/5): Colonial building which needs updating. Service good though. - We had a warm welcome and the staff were very helpful and responsive. The room was spacious but rather old fashioned. It is a colonial bungalow with character. It was a 15 min walk to town and to a nice restaurant. The breakfast was buffet style and ok. The room was dirty and needs updating. The restaurant in the hotel next door was very bland with a limited evening menu and no atmosphere. We heard rats in the roof during the night. The room was a bit dark with a range of plug sockets, all different and only a couple usable for us.
- Munir (7/5): Lovely place. Definitely go for it - Lovely old style building. Comfortable room, double quilt for comfort, friendly & co-operative staff, reasonable rates. Restaurant has a very limited menu. Needs to add some Sri Lankan items like rice curry or lumprice to the menu. Eating sandwiches, burgers & fried rice can get boring.
- Bron (9/5): Charming, Quaint Stay - We really enjoyed our stay here even though the weather was rubbish. The house is such a quirky throwback to another era, it was like stepping back in time and visiting a boarding house/ B and B. Great value for money. We would recommend staying here.
- Staff were incredibly helpful and informative which made the stay so enjoyable. Shakeeb was particularly helpful.
- Bedrooms were so spacious with a fireplace (that was lit at night for us).
- Buffet breakfast was at the bigger hotel next door and was delicious
- Shower was hot and had great pressure.
- The place is old and so a little run-down but somehow just contributed to the charm.
- Wifi was great
- Walking distance to many of the main parts of Nuwara Eliya including the gardens and the main town.
- Leadh (10/5): Homely stay - Cosy, homely stay. Even lit the fire for us. Felt like I was in a family home. Warm bed, hot shower & good choice of buffet breakfast! Attendant was so helpful.
- Kenneth (9/5): A Hotel with Character - The hotel has lots of character and charm. The public spaces are cozy and welcoming. The bed was very comfortable and our room was spacious. The garden area out front was a great place to relax and enjoy hearing the wind in the trees. The young man who worked at reception was conscientious and friendly. He patiently answered all our questions about the area and took time to visit with us. He made our stay extra special. The shower curtain needs to be replaced and the hot water was a bit tricky.
- Michelle (8/5): Great location, great old world experience. Lovely people and great breakfast. - It was great to be staying in an old plantation house. Very old world. Loved it and enjoyed sitting in the lounge room. The place gave us a quick walk into town. Breakfast was also lovely. Nothing really. Good value for money
- Aiste (7/5): Good -
- Li (9/5): The service was attentive, and they were always ready to help with any request. - The hotel accommodated my special dietary needs. When I was sick, they specially prepared lightly seasoned fried rice for me, which I really appreciated.
- Jernej (6/5): Pleasant -
- Noriyasu (8/5): Very good -
- Nigel (8/5): Lovely, quirky old bungalow in good location. - This is an old 100 year old building that is reminiscent of buildings in England from the 1930's. It's need of some attention but that's the charm. Service was excellent. Breakfast is served next door and is hotel buffet style so a bit rubbish. Only bug bears was the bed sheets don't fit the beds so you end up sleeping on the raw mattress and in the storm, the ceiling leaks water into the bathroom. We were in room 101!! Breakfast is not good. Buffet. All cold. Nothing healthy except the fruit. Coffee was instant. Tea was stewed. Room leaks when rains.
- Simona (10/5): Really nice stay - The hotel is very clean, the guy from the reception is really attentive and nice, he put up our fireplace because it was a bit cold. We booked a triple room and it was nicely decorated and spacious and the bathroom has a tub.
We walked for 10 minutes to a nice restaurant which the receptionist recommended and we had a great time.
- John (5/5): Glad it was only one night - Really helpful staff especially the young manager. He was friendly and helpful with good advice for places to visit and eat. Room was cold and had a musty and damp feel. There was little natural ventilation and sunlight. Decoration was old which needed refreshing even though it was an old building.. web photos were devceing and out of date
- Alicja (4/5): Overpriced but good location - We stayed there for 2 nights in the budget room. The hotel host is the only reason that mades up the whole stay. Lovely, extremely polite and helpful person. Right after arrival we discovered that the shower drain is clogged, next day the sink started to leak. Room was cold and not the cleanest. Additionally the room description states that there is a tv in the room (it was not there), hairdryer is at request and the wifi works only in the lobby. Overall it is way overpriced for the budget standard.
- Xiao (10/5): Exceptional - In The 150-year-old Trevene Hotel, a wood-fired fireplace is lit in the evening, and people play cards and chat in the living room as if they were at home. The hotel was able to order meals, because we left at 5am the next day so we packed breakfast, the butler for the day was a boy, he was very warm.
- Jörgen (7/5): Good - The location and the history of the hotel.
The staff were very helpful and one staff member stood out. Shakeeb who was very attentive and even make a warming fire for us in the evening. The upkeep of the hotel. Such a grand old place needs a little more TLC.
- Wenhui (10/5): Unforgettable memories in Sri Lanka - We had an enjoyable and unforgettable two-night stay here, even though it rained during our visit. A special thanks to Mr. Shakeeb for his exceptional care and attention to detail, which left a lasting impression on us. He was always ready to assist us at a moment’s notice, making us feel truly cared for throughout our stay.
One of the highlights of our visit was gathering by the fireplace every evening, warming up from the chilly weather of Nuwara Eliya. It was such a cozy and heartwarming experience that perfectly complemented the serene atmosphere of this beautiful place.
Breakfast was great as well!
Thank you for making our stay so memorable. We would absolutely recommend this accommodation and look forward to returning in the future! Nothing
- Rosemary (8/5): Good experience staying in a historical lodging - Stayed here because of its history. It was built in 1835. You can easily walk to downtown and the Botanical Gardens. It's quiet at night because it's set back from the main road. The bed was super comfortable and had a comforter on it which was great because it was cold out. The staff built a fire in the fireplace in the lobby sitting room for us in the evening. Best of all shower was hot!!! Breakfast is a buffet in the new hotel right beside the Trevene. The staff were super polite and went out of their way to make you comfortable
- Upali (8/5): Staff was very good and helpful everything was fine except the room TV - Breakfast was very good It a combination local and western may items to select
- Bazil (10/5): Lovely warm hosts in a good location - Nicely located by Victoria Park.. an old bungalow- and wonderful Shakeeb who is the nicest and most helpful of hosts…. A lovely breakfast too.
- Stephanie (3/5): Poor - It was extremely cold at the room, dirty towels and the blanket smelled a lot of smoke. The staff also disturbed twice just to confirm that we were going on regular breakfast-schedule. The room was not clean and the window in the bathroom could not close.
- Amanda (9/5): It’s an old building, so don’t expect modern luxury. - The bed was lovely and snug, I had the best nights sleep so far in Sri Lanka. The staff were friendly and helpful and the breakfast was lovely. The property is a very short walk into town.
- Nina (10/5): Colonial treatment and spirit - The room had this old tacky colonial vibe which we absolutely loved! The staff were attentive and efficient, very eager to help and make us feel comfortable. They arranged us a trip to Horton plains which was great, packed us take away breakfast and had no problem with us leaving our luggage in the room even a bit after check-out time. Good location, hot shower, everything you need for a day or two in Nuwara Eliya! /
- Jonathan (10/5): Great hotel, service and location! - We had a wonderful 3 night stay. The room and bathroom was spacious, clean and well equipped. We loved having an enclosed shower with great hot water pressure separate from the rest of the bathroom. This kept everything dry. Wi-Fi is very good. There are many sitting rooms with couches to read and write in the lobby. The free breakfast was delicious and extensive. The hotel is located within walking distances to everything. The best part was the host (Shakeeb) who attended to our every need and always around when we had questions. Shakeeb arranged all our logistics for Hortons Plains, and made cost effective recommendations for beyond. Thank you Shakeeb! Nothing
- Denise (4/5): Sadly we can only warn visitors not to stay here - Good location, basic feel of the former colonial guest house was good but sadly nothing else measured up. During our stay we variously had no water, no electricity, limited internet, unbearable construction noise at night and unsafe surrounds with exposed sharp spikes, tripping hazards, laundry hanging on the front fence and bushes as well as on the handrail of the dangerous exterior staircase to breakfast which was very poor and in an adjacent hotel. Much to improve here. Staff arranged a vehicle for onward travel which was below standard and over priced with the driver who did not know where he was going and harassed for a tip at the end
- Nuo (10/5): Exceptional - The hotel is charm. Have the traditional style and with wood wall stove, which you can use at night.
The reception staff Shakeeb is super helpful and he made our stay very enjoyable! He really care what guests want and do his best to help! Thank you! None
- Luca (9/5): Superb - The location is a former a colonial villa, highly recommend if you want to experience it. Very helpful staff. Location close to centre and Victoria Park. Excellent breakfast in the very close newer hotel. We went to Horton Plains on the check out day and had a lovely packed breakfast ready by 5am, thank you!
- Rumesh (9/5): Superb - I enjoyed the aesthetics and the cosy feeling. Calm and quiet.
- Min (10/5): Exceptional - Nice staff!lovely room!
- Ken (10/5): Exceptional - - Helpful staff
- British colonial era house is atmospheric
- Good location. Close to city center, but far from traffic noise. -
- Rebecca (9/5): Cosy and peaceful guest house in Nuwara Eliya - Cosy guesthouse in a former tea estate bungalow, located a few minutes' walk from central Nuwara Eliya, Victoria Park and Lake Gregory. The décor is more quaint than modern, but my room was large and well-appointed. The friendly staff member helped me throughout my stay, giving me advice on things to do in town and even lighting a roaring fire in my in-room fireplace — a real novelty! The bed was very comfortable and my room was extremely quiet so I got a great night's sleep. Those who prefer a more modern/minimalist style may not be too fond of the décor but I found it charming.
- Kareema (8/5): Very good - The place was quite cozy and very homely, didn't feel like we were too far from home and that was great for anyone travelling with an infant like us.
It was in a very convenient location as well and I think that's what got our attention and the price we were paying for it was totally worth it.
Would definitely recommend the place to friends and family.
- Avi (8/5): Ok place to stay near city center - The location - 10min walking from city center, the service and rich breakfast. Electric water kettle in the room Iffy wifi (stopped working for almost a full day as they didn't charge it...). A window in the ceiling (with no curtain) introduces early sunlight.
Probably not worth the price...
- Paula (8/5): Very good - We have had a good experience at The Trevene. The Staff was very helpful and kind. The bedroom was very clean with a comfortable bed. Breakfast was great too.
- Hadrien (7/5): Comfortable and cosy accomodation - Super welcoming staff and very helpful. The fireplace was great for the cosy atmosphere of the room. Very English-cottage style great with the Nuwara-Eliya vibes :) The hotel starts to feel a bit old but it is also part of the charm !
- Marion (7/5): Good - Spacious room, good hot shower! It was recommended to move to the green panorama. Facilities and room are fine but it lacks the coziness of the pictures shown on booking.com
- Sankara (8/5): Great stay..worth every single penny - Nice heritage property with comfortable location great hospitality from staffs Breakfast could have been little better
- Aleksandra (5/5): Passable - Good location, close to the city center and the lake. Good take-away breakfast We did not enjoy the room- it was old and quite dirty. There was a very distinctive mould smell. For 1 night it was fine, but I wouldn’t stay there again.
- Sanjeev (8/5): Very good -
- Kodithuwakku (10/5): It was a amazing experience stay in old villa with modern facilities - Friendly customer service
Clam, peaceful and beautiful environment
Clean and delicious food
I really like they still maintain old villa very well
- Johny (9/5): It was really a nice experience for 12 of us staying together here with a nice gathering at night. - Heritage nature of the property including the furniture Quality of the toilets
- Sofie (5/5): Ok - The bed was very comfy and the room was big. They made sure we had enough blankets because it is colder in that area. (Off course for Belgium people it is still warm :D, so we were like sweating with all these blankets and removed a few, but it was a nice gesture).
We didn't really like Nuwara Eliya itself, compared to all other places that we have been to in Sri Lanka, so I'm probably harsher for this stay then other stays, but I also compare it to other stays and they were just better.
It was ok for 1 night. This was actually the dirtiest place we stayed in during our entire trip of Sri Lanka and I have had rooms with ants and frogs and salamanders, but that didn't bother me that much. The room was not clean, everywhere, including the drapes and curtains there was mold.
The breakfast was a buffet in another hotel next door. But it was not really good. Not fresh.
- Tereza (9/5): Superb -
- Graeme (7/5): Good for an overnight stay. - The property was located slightly out the main town up a hill. Walkable, but a little scary in the dark at night time. We had a torch though. The room itself was big and comfy but a little outdated. There were what looked like stains on the ceiling, and the grout/sealant around the shower room looks grotty, but we were only there for 1 night so this didn't bother us and for the price we paid. The bed was extremely comfy and had a nice thick duvet and blanket on it for snuggling down in as the temperature was much cooler at night time in this area. The breakfast was in the hotel next door was basic - fruit, toast, cake, coffee. Not the best but not the worst. The tiredness of the decor. Seems a shame for it to be left in such a beautiful old colonial building,
- Balakrishnan (7/5): Good place but the.services need to improve for the price we pay. - The breakfast was superb. The lady at the breakfast was warmly welcoming with a smile and she was very kind and helpful. The door lock of our room was broken and couldn't lock it properly. There was no hand shower in the bath cubicle. There was no balcony and the room.was adjoining a store room.
- Nadeesha (9/5): Superb - Kind assistane of mrs nisansala🥰
- Jacqui (5/5): Passable -
- Julie (10/5): Colonial guesthouse, lovely gardens and great budget accommodation - Guesthouse is a perfect budget accommodation. Great position, great history, incredibly friendly hosts. Rooms are large and comfortable. Good breakfast Nothing
- Elzbieta (10/5): Great place - Everything was great, room, localisation close to centre, staff very helpful and breakfast even better than other places Nothing
- Joshua (9/5): Peace and quiet with a touch of historical importance - The host Mr. Dilruksha and the front desk attendant Shakeeb were very accommodating during my stay at the Trevene. The building is historic and has a quaint feeling nestled in the forest. Breakfast was great. Skip the Western options and go for the Sri Lankan food. Their chef is excellent and it was one of the best local meals I had on my journey through Sri Lanka. The location is within walking distance of the central bus station, Victoria Park, lakeside and great restaurants.
