Guest Reviews
- Luca (10/5): Fantastic traditional accommodation in Kyoto. Recommended. - Excellent traditional house in a quiet area in Kyoto. Everything was as expected. I'd stay there again. We visited in spring, please bear in mind thermal insulation of traditional Japanese accommodation is minimal so it may not be the best option for a family in the hot or cold season.
- Mustafa (10/5): - Wonderful stay at Korakuan. Very clean, comfortable, and in a great location. Rika was kind and welcoming, and everything was well organized. Highly recommended!
- Adam (9/5): Beautiful Traditional Japanese House - Beautiful old Kyoto house.
100+ years old.
Feels very authentic and traditional.
Hidden staircase!!!!
The whole house is yours to use!
Rika, the owner and descendant of the original owners, was very accommodating and helpful -- ask her if you want ideas for anything to do or see in Kyoto. The shower, in winter, is a cold walk away -- but this is just the necessity of the old architecture.
The location is just west of Nijo Castle, which is nice, but a bit far from Gion.
- Larissa (9/5): A beautiful Japanese house! - It was a joy to stay in this lovely traditional Japanese home. Rika was very friendly and helpful and we had a great stay! We were only two people and it was a luxury having so much space. The japanese garden is also so lovely and it’s nice to just sit and take it all in. The location is great with the metro and busses just a short walk away and Family Mart is round the corner, there’s even a Muji nearby too. Thank you for having us :) Everything was great! A small note that the stairs are quite steep and the wifi downstairs cut out often, we didn’t mind but take it into consideration if you plan to work from there.
- Jungleride (10/5): Fantastic experience of traditional Japanese townhouse. - The lovely authentic Japanese rooms, furniture and decor. Rika the manager was very friendly and made us most welcome. Staying at Korakuan was an amazing experiece, which gave a real taste of traditional Japan. Nothing - it was all p
erfect.

- Merica (10/5): We really enjoyed our stay here, it has got to be my favorite accommodation out of the 4 we booked during our 2 week tri - My bf and I really enjoyed the coziness and authenticity of this Kyoto home. Although we stayed in the winter time, the home had heaters and extra blankets to keep us toasty! Rika was also the sweetest host & made sure to see us when we arrived and also saw us off when we were checking out! She had offered us many local recommendations & told us what’s around the area, along with encouraged us to experience the culture in Kyoto! Only thing I can think of is how the bathroom is downstairs, away from the bedroom but it was not much of a hassle!
- Barbara (8/5): -
- Hrubešová (10/5): Must Experience in Japan - Very authentic and very clean place! I definitely recommend! Also Rika was a super helpful and kind to us. Thank you!
- Chiara (9/5): Assolutamente meravigliosa - L’appartamento è magnifico, curato in ogni dettaglio.
- Karolina (10/5): Authentic Kyoto experience with peace, charm, and wonderful hospitality! - We were absolutely delighted with our stay at Koraku-an! This unique place truly lets you feel the spirit of authentic Kyoto. The house, although renovated, has preserved original elements like wooden stairs and traditional sliding doors – all of which create a special atmosphere and give you a chance to experience genuine Japanese culture.
A special mention goes to the wonderful owner – incredibly welcoming, kind, and helpful, which made our stay even more enjoyable.
Another huge advantage of this place is the peace and quiet – the house is located in a charming, calm alley, allowing you to truly rest away from the hustle and bustle of the city, yet it’s still very close to Nijo Station, shops, and restaurants.
It was a unique, authentic, and unforgettable experience. We highly recommend it to anyone who wants to feel the real Kyoto! Rikka, thank you so much for everything! -
- Sathyendran (10/5): Beautiful home and must stay place if you’re visiting Kyoto - The home was amazing! Well maintained with all antique items and Rika was a brilliant host! Nothing
- Abdullah (10/5): Lovely traditional Japanese house in a great location - Traditional style house. Great location. Kind host. N/A
- Marcelo (10/5): Authentic and wonderful experience in kyoto! true GEM - Korukuan was a very magical place to stay.
Its a traditional japanese house.
It was a VERY authentic experience.
Rika is a super host, comminication was easy, she came to say goodby.
We wish we could have stay longer! Nothing!
- Quynh (10/5): Exceptional -
- Steven (9/5): A well-maintained, unique, traditional property with a very friendly and helpful host - Koraku-an is a unique, traditional 'machiya' property in Kyoto, providing a novel experience compared to staying in a western hotel.
It is clear the owners have painstakingly kept the traditional elements of the property, but have always ensured the neccessary mod-cons are present - a nice modern shower, air-conditioning units (which for us, doubled up as heaters, as it was cold) and great kitchen amenities. The property was very clean too, impressively so considering how large and old it is! We stayed as a couple, but I imagine it could fit 4/5 people easily.
The location is pleasant and quiet, with a metro and JR line station (Nijo) around a 15 minute walk away.
Rika, the host, is friendly and will meet you after check in and also contact you to meet when you check out. She also provides a useful map of local restaurants and sights, which was a nice touch. The WiFi is not very strong - this may not impact most people, but it left me struggling to make a call back to the UK. But it is probably to be expected with a property of this nature.
Also, we went in March during a bit of a colder spell of weather. The property does get very cold. They provide an array of blankets, a heater and air-con units which can double up as heaters, so this didn't bother us too much. But just worth flagging to anyone who struggles with the cold, that it may be worth considering this if booking in the winter / shoulder seasons.
Lastly, while the location was ok, you aren't close to many of the main attractions in Kyoto (except Nijo Castle). Again, just something to consider for those who are maybe only in Kyoto for a couple of days.
- Shari (10/5): A beautiful traditional house in a quiet and easy to reach area - The host was incredibly helpful and friendly. She even gave us a list of recommendations in the area, which we used a lot. The house itself was absolutely gorgeous, and very spacious too. The garden view was so beautiful and relaxing. All in all, a truly great stay that I would definitely recommend!
- Max (10/5): Worthwhile experience - Traditional style. We also really enjoyed the local Onsen, my favourite from my Japan trip. Rika the manager was also very helpful Just a little bit dusty but not that noticeable.
- Akmaral (10/5): Real Japanese life - For people who want to feel and get experience in Japanese citizens calm life you are in right place.
There are all facilities that you need(even things for onsen), the house was clean and pretty, tatami was really comfortable and I liked it.
Thank you for Rika, she provided the guidance of the places(supermarket, restaurant, convenience stores) and interesting sightseeing of Kyoto
For the next trip in Kyoto, I will book this house again and show me friends
- Yoli (10/5): - Koraku-an is a beautiful Ryokan. We wanted to experience staying in a traditional Japanese home and this place was perfect. Rika was so nice and she even went out of her way to wait for our Uber to help direct it to Koraku-an on our last day. Over all, our experience with Koraku-an was wonderful and excellent.
- Lois (10/5): Wonderful and unique experience in the heart of Kyoto - Such a gorgeous traditional accommodation with all the amenities and facilities you might require. Rikka went the extra mile to prepare a map detailing nearby spots for good food and conbinis/supermarkets — clearly a labour of love. A little bit of a walk (up to 10mins?) from the nearest train/subway station
- David (9/5): Historical Kyoto machiya is a unique stay and great value, lots of room for 3-4 people - Staying in a traditional Kyoto machiya was very unique experience, the extra space, kitchen, laundry facilities were great
- Dominique (9/5): Very nice old style Japanese house, excellent experience. Just don't expect same luxury as in a mod -
- Miroslav (10/5): Beautiful tradional stay with helpful owner - We really liked the atmosphere there. It is very spacious and has a true authentic feeling to it. The owner provided us several maps with recommendations where to eat/what to visit. The owner was also quick to respond to any of our questions via email. As for the neighborhood, it is calm and safe. There is a lot of other traditional houses nearby and for example the Nijo castle and Shinsen-en garden are in walkable distance. Walking with our luggage from the Nijo station was a little exhausting during hot weather. We would call it a minor disadvantage though, the accommodation is worth it.
- Filip (10/5): Exceptionally beautiful traditional house, very hospitable and caring owner. Absolutely recommend! - Everything was great!
- Aliaksandr (10/5): Exceptional - The house looks very atmospheric and authentic, living in this place is a separate type of relaxation and aesthetic pleasure. I love it.
And special thanks to the manager Rika who helped us a lot with all questions
- Madison (10/5): Beautiful kyo-machinya in the heart of Kyoto - The traditional townhouse was exceptional. So beautiful, clean, and the garden lit up at night to accentuate the beautiful tree and plants. We were so happy here - the beds were so comfortable and it was a peaceful experience. The host Rika was sooo wonderful and went over and above for us, also helped us to book a couple of restaurants.
- Katherine (10/5): Amazing comfortable and spacious. We will be back - It was such an amazing home to stay in. Very spacious and tranquil. It was comfortable and in a nice neighborhood, with a local onsen and convenience store two minute walk away It was a little cold but there were heaters placed every where
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Property was everything we expected it to be. A traditional and cultural Japanese experience.
- Verified traveler (4/5): - I don’t feel safe when staying with kids at This property. The property seems to be very fragile. You can hear all the noise around the street. Even when the next door people slide their door. Cannot sleep properly.
Mosquito bite can be an issue for our family as there is still marks on my kids face and body.
The owner lives very close to the house. Very helpful and nice lady. The house might be suitable for adults alone but not family with kids.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Our stay was very enjoyable in a lovely authentic traditional guesthouse with all you need. Extremely helpful info guide prepared by owner Rika. Quiet and safe area
Steep stairs for navigating to upstair bedrooms but option of sleeping downstairs too.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - We had been staying in this beautiful house for 7 days during our visit to Kyoto. It is such a great experience for us to understand the traditional living style and culture of Kyoto. Korakuan is well maintained and we feel very comfortable with the facilities provided. A map of the nearby area, train/JR stations and a list of restaurant are well prepared by the owner. We tried the public bath and some restaurants recommended which are good. Best of all , Ms Rika , the owner is very nice and helpful. She attended to all our request immediately and was a great help to us during our stay. Thank you Rika. Will definitely stay again and it is highly recommended.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - we liked the fact that it was authentic but still with modern facilities
it was a great place to stay the experience was unique
location was good as well with great info supplied by owners re surrounding facilities and transport links
We would definitly recommend this property
- Michael (10/5): - This was a great experience for family! Great for groups and larger than most hotels! The beds were large and soft and the rooms are clean. There is a kitchen for cooking as well! Anyone coming to Kyoto wanting to experience tatami should live at Koraku-an. Rika was a great host and even showed us out on check out.
- CK (10/5): - Our family loved the unique experience that this authentic traditional Japanese style wooden house offered!
- Verified traveler (10/5): - This was such a special property to stay in and in a fantastic location. The manager was so helpful and welcoming. So much good food nearby and good transport. The building itself is magical and very well equipped. A wonderful place to stay to experience this amazing city!
- Wilin (10/5): Authentic Kyoto Home - Super wonderful to get a chance to stay in an authentic traditional Japanese house. Cooking utensils, laundry equipment, and toiletries are all available. Had the most romantic homely stay. Ms. Rika was a lovely host! It was really nice to learn about the history of her parents’ home.
- Grace (10/5): - It was very unique experience staying in Korakuan!
The house is old but we enjoyed the REAL Kyoto life --- nice neighborhood, convenient stores....
Make sure you use google map when you come back by taxi. :)
- Chris (10/5): - The old style feel of the home was a truly amazing experience. Very clean, great area. Lots of character and charm.
- ggroovex (10/5): - What a beautiful place to stay. We loved being immersed in authentic "old school" Kyoto culture. The public baths nearby are excellent and there is a big supermarket nearby. Our host Rika was lovely and had some very useful suggestions for things to do. Highly recommended.
- Gracia (10/5): Home Away From Home - We loved the experience we had at Korakuan! The home is beautiful, very well-kept and immaculate. The area of Nijo is quaint and there is easy access to the metro. The service was wonderful and we were provided detailed information about the surrounding area, etc. When we had difficulty arriving to Kyoto due to rain and train delays, they were more than accommodating. They also went out of their way to make sure we made it safely and had everything we needed when we are arrived. We would highly recommend staying here for a traditional, hometown experience.
- Ninh (10/5): Nice Kyoto townhouse experience. - Beautiful home and very unique and rewarding experience.
- C. (10/5): Wonderful Old Machiya in a Central Neighborhood - We loved this place! The house is about 100 years old, with wooden floors, low furniture, beautiful soji screens and a tiny garden. It is centrally located in a small, intimate neighborhood and within walking distance to the main train station and subway lines, as well as several grocery stores and restaurants. The kitchen is old, but completely functional. Shower is in an add-on, covered area and there is a washing machine right there on site. Beds are located upstairs. It was pretty cold when we were there, but the electric heaters kept the entire house warm and cozy.
The owner and our most gracious host made sure that our every need was met. She also informed us of a special, lantern/light festival that was going on at the Kyoto shrines and temples at that time. We were so glad that we went and probably would not have known about it, if it were not for her. Staying at Korakuan was a nice get-away from the, "hotel life," for a few days and a chance to live like the locals do. We'll definitely stay there again, the next time we are in Kyoto.
- Alex (10/5): Charming and Authentic, very pretty neighbourhood - Charming and Authentic, very pretty neighbourhood. The lady that greeted us was so helpful and nice. She explained to us all there is to know about Kyoto. She even brought us tea and bread. A++ would definitely go again.
- Mark (10/5): Korakuan must stay to experience old japanese life - We stayed three nights at Korukuan and loved every minute. First let me say that Rika Fukuda, the hostess of Korukuan was wonderful. She greeted us minutes after we let ourselves in (with the passcode: she lives just across the way) and welcomed us. But she had already left us personal notes of welcome and explanations of how things worked. She also left us a detailed map of the neighborhood which was of tremendous help when trying to explain to cabbies how to find this gem in the middle of an old neighborhood of family homes. Korakuan was Rika’s grandmothers home and that explains much. It is old Japan style living on tatami mats, sleeping on futons (absolutely comfortable) and eating at the heated kotatsu table, sitting on the floor. The two story house has sleeping rooms above, two living rooms below with kitchen and a wonderful Japanese garden outside. The kitchen is completely stocked with utensils, pans etc so using the market (2 minute walk away) we were able to cook our evening meals or have breakfast in the comfort of this temporary home. Everything is clean and Rika has thought of everything when fitting it out for guests. The location is very central in Kyoto and close to the metro subway. We will certainly stay here when we return and recommend Korakuan to anyone visiting Kyoto that wants a very economical way to experience old style Japanese living in the heart of the community. You cannot go wrong and will not regret your stay.
