Guest Reviews
- Qian (10/5): - Not much to do near the property but the spa is amazing!
- Julie (10/5): Excellent for families! - We had an excellent experience at KAI Ito! Our family of four stayed in a room with a private hot spring tub. The suite was large and comfortable, and both breakfast and dinner were included. The food was extravagant and excellent, but note that it will not be appropriate for very picky eaters. The staff were all incredibly welcoming, accomodating to children, and their English was fantastic! I highly recommend this resort for families. We will definitely be staying at KAI resorts any time we're back in Japan.
- han-yin (10/5): 值得再訪 - 完美放鬆,服務貼心,地點離車站很近。
- Connector50984469087 (10/5): Unforgettable summer holiday for children - I had the most enjoyable stay at Hoshino Resort 'KAI' compared to any other hotel in Japan I've stayed at before. The staff's hospitality was outstanding, and both the interior of the building and our room were impeccably clean, making our stay very pleasant.
During our stay, there was an event at the pool. The children got to ride boats, and at the poolside, they enjoyed activities like goldfish scooping, water guns, and creating bubbles . The staff made sure we had a ton of fun. Seeing the joy in my child's face made it a wonderful summer memory for us.
- yukiikezi (4/5): Disappointment on 2nd day - I stayed at KAI Ito for two nights for a long overdue and precious family reunion. It seems that a good chunk of their guests stay for just one night, but we stayed two, because we traveled far to get there. First night was fine (acceptable for what they charge), but the second day was disappointing. Beware. They are NOT geared for Renpaku (continuous stays)!
1. We declined room cleaning (e.g. no vacuuming) after the first night, but they said they would refresh amenities (new towels, etc.) We got fresh towels, but they left used tea cups and glasses uncleaned. We had to call to replenish toilet papers. I had to go to the front desk, because the fresh yukata (bath robes) they gave me was of wrong size. They didn't replenish drinking water. All in all, we had to call at least four times to get everything right for the second night. This would be okay for a basic business hotel, but we were staying in a fine resort....
2. We followed a recommendation from our nakai-san (person assigned to take care of us) to take a bus to Mt. Ohmuro and take a lift up to the top for a "spectacular view of Izumo Peninsula." It turned out this lift had been shut down for at least a week for a two-week repair, and we learned about it at the bus station (there was a tiny sign in Japanese about the closure). I told a lady at the front desk about the closure, but the reaction I got was a curt "Oh, excuse us." I also mentioned we were able to find another nice place to visit, and she said, "That's nice." I wasn't sure if this lady would share the info with others, so they would stop giving wrong advice to more guests....
3. Meals are highlights of a stay at a Japanese resort, but KAI didn't make an effort to serve a different menu on the second night. The meal was very similar to the first night with only minor variations. It was different from our experiences at other fine resorts in Japan (including another Hoshino resort.)
There was also a bunch of other things that made us wonder about this place (too minor to remember but bothersome in their entirety). By the checkout time, everyone in our party was just ready to go. Instead of enjoying hospitality, I felt I was being forced to accommodate the way they wanted to run their place. Again, okay for a basic hotel but way below expectations for a place like KAI.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Excellent accommodation, food, spa and service.
- warrenD190 (8/5): Great Kaiseki Meal - We always enjoy this onsen. The Kaiseki meal is creative and delicious. We were a party of four this time. For the most part, we had the ofuro all to ourselves.
The property is rather old and has been refurbished. They seem to be on a cost-cutting campaign. The hotel eliminated the happy hour beer service near the pool, a feature I always enjoyed, and the van service from the station to the onsen. We don't mind the walk.
For the meal, one small comment and one more significant point. The cheesecake desert was tasty but the strawberry inside it had been refrigerated and was almost frozen.
More significant is the poor quality of wines, at least the one we chose. I have had some very good red wines from the Loire Valley, France, and I ordered one with our meal. It was 5,500, way higher than the average retail price of 1,333 I checked on Vivino. The typical markup in a restaurant for a bottle of wine is about 100%. The wine I ordered at Hoshino Ito was very plain, tepid, unimaginative. The hotel management could well consult someone who knows wine to recommend decent choices consistent with the quality of the kaiseki meal.
- sbgemstw (8/5): Old but clean and nice - With Great Japan hospitality and big rooms, Traditional japan onsen, nice but I feel a bit expensive for two of us stay it cost US$ 550 for a night. Few hotels near with similar prices it’s also good. Kai’s other hotel is very nice which is very close. Overall it’s good.
- warrenD190 (8/5): Nice choice in Ito - My partner and I have stayed here twice. It lacks a beautiful view of the sea; it is rather a town onsen, but the Japanese food served here is superb. The meals are served in a dining room with separated areas for privacy. This is far better than the traditional style of serving meals in your room, food that we generally find rather mechanically prepared and not really that good. There is an outdoor swimming pool and of course onsen baths for men and women. In the early evening it is nice to sit outside and enjoy free beer. The entrance area has a huge impressive painting. I believe this onsen is a private equity investment.
- Jesse-ch (8/5): Improving Ryokan - This Onsen has been updated with two floor suites where older suites have been joined into one by a private staircase. This arrangement provide lots of space and a private outdoor Japanese bath for washing and soaking. The hotel of course has large baths open to all residents that are lovely. We found them, both female and male, a little cool for our tastes. The in-room bath was about right. The food was good. The service was excellent and at least a few of the staff speak very good English. I believe that much more major updates are planned for this property. It seems to be a recently acquired establishment in the early days of improvement.
Wi-Fi for Japanese tastes was pretty wide spread, but that means having subscribed to, e.g., Softbank, for Wi-Fi access. The hotel provides good free Wi-Fi in the lobby.
- JoyM0025 (6/5): Ryokan style hotel, No WiFi - This ryokan style hotel is all inclusive with meals and onsen.
Check in required a 20 minute sit down conversion to make reservations for meals and understanding all the information about hotel. Then you are walked to your room, so check in is about 30 minutes. At Hoshino, you must eat dinner and breakfast at the reserved specific time. Our day was planned around these assigned times. View from room was lovely, looking out at grounds with pond and koi. Room is tatami mat, sleep on floor with futon. Shower and bathtub (onsen style) are outside with privacy fence. No wifi in room, only in public front lobby. Meals are kaiseki style, very beautiful. We wore yukata to dinner (yukata provided) which is a tradition at ryokan hotels. Only one staff member spoke limited English. No menu or hotel information in English.
- 473virginiam (8/5): Experiencing new type of Japanese Onsen Ryokan. - The building and facilities are typical Japanese Hot Spring Hotel.
The English-speaking service was a new experiences for this type of hotel.
Spacious Japanese style suite.
Japanese dinner served at dining room, each course was beautifully presented and poetically described.
Japanese breakfast by the large window viewing morning garden.
We enjoyed the hot spring three time during our stay, right after check-in, after dinner, and before breakfast.
- Robertwoodland (6/5): Nice place but tired ryokan in shocking location - I'll start by saying that our room was £400 per night for a large tatami suite with an outdoor bath and breakfast and dinner for 2.
The hotel itself is really nice and not very many complaints. The food was probably the best we had in Japan and the service was great. Having the private bath was amazing and we didn't use the private facilities at all.
The hotel downside was that it was pretty worn down and is need of a massive refurbishment. Also a small thing but no WiFi in the room (really?....) So I had to complain a lot to get a portable device which in fairness they provided pretty quickly despite telling me they couldn't do it 2-3 times earlier.
The reason why this is not 4.5-5*? Then location is SHOCKING. It is in the most random town centre location about 5 minutes drive from Ito station and our views from the hotel were of an industrial fishing town and a few car parks with the mountains in the background. The website completely mislead us into believing we were going to stay in the mountains away from it all and for the price it was what I expected.
- peachbum83 (8/5): Enjoyable onsen resort - First things first: Hoshino Resort Kai Ito is fairly dated. Yes, it looks like it was built and last decorated in 1985. But, the place is impeccably kept and very, very clean. The staff does their best to help their English speaking guests and we had no trouble getting what we needed. They explained onsen customs and they scheduled our dinner without a hitch. We inquired about some local tours, too. Are there more foreign-friendly and more updated/modern/contemporary onsen resorts in Ito? Probably. But I didn't feel like we were missing out here at all.
There is a hot tub right outside your hotel room which is yours to use personally. It's well blocked so no one will be able to see you out there. The hotel room is traditional Japanese, so expect to sleep on a tatami floor with cushiony bedding. They lay it out for your each night and then put it neatly away each morning.
My favorite onsen was not the one in my room, however. It was the private family onsen. You have to book your free 45 minute allotment with the front desk, but even if you go as a couple it's well worth the effort. The indoor and outdoor tubs are huge and the experience feels authentic. I felt like a new person after soaking in there! I didn't bother with the public baths at all during my entire stay.
Another impressive part of the resort is their food. I expected the included dinners to be very minimally palatable, but in fact they were delicately made and very professionally served. It was comparable to any traditional Japanese dinner you could get in Japan. My husband and I ate it all up and enjoyed it thoroughly.
- erika-lux-miller (4/5): Under average - Visited April 2012.
You have to be careful with the Hoshino Resorts as there are two kinds - one is their own property and another is when they buy/manage the struggling or bankrupted hotels. Kai is the latter case and you just know it when you get there. I had a high expectation just because this was one of the hotel managed by Hoshino resorts, but facility/room/management was under my expectation.
Room - huge, with 3 or more rooms for two of us.
Bath - not nice at all, gives me a feeling of public bath in the city. Could be that this place was mainly for "families" and I just remembered lot of kids in the bath.
Pool - again, lots of kids and didnt feel like getting close to it.
Food - nothing really special.
They had this small lounge next to the bath where you can have a free drinks (inclu beer) which was their attraction. But was always crowded and not relaxing at all.
If you look for some great luxurious experience, this is not the place.
