Guest Reviews
- 865caitlynb (10/5): A Truly Unforgettable Experience at KAI Hoshino Resorts, Hakone - This was hands down one of the most beautiful properties I’ve ever stayed in — not just in Japan, but anywhere. The room was immaculate and incredibly spacious (a rare luxury in Japan), and having our own private onsen made the experience feel like a true retreat.
The resort is a bit further from the center of town, which may not be ideal for everyone, but we were specifically looking for something more remote and peaceful — and it was perfect. The quiet, natural surroundings only added to the sense of relaxation.
The meals were another highlight. Both breakfast and dinner were included, and each one was beautifully prepared, elaborate, and clearly made with so much thought and care. It was exactly the kind of authentic Japanese cuisine we were hoping for.
We also booked in-room massages, and I can honestly say it was the best massage I’ve ever had. The therapist used just the right amount of pressure, paid special attention to sore and tight areas, and created such a restorative experience.
While the resort does offer public onsens, we didn’t end up using them since we had our own private one in the room — which made the stay feel even more special and intimate.
If you're looking for rest, beauty, and a deeply immersive Japanese hospitality experience, this is the place. Could not recommend it more highly.
- GeraldSingapore (10/5): Great relaxing stay - Great ryokan in Hakone - although some people may be put off by its slightly further location away from the main town center, I had no problems with it as I purposely chose this for its location as it’s next to the river and you do get very therapeutic and soothing stay atmosphere when you stay here.
Also, I didn’t drive, so I relied only on public transport to get here from Hakone - the taxi from the train station to this hotel was not expensive, and there are bus stops outside (but you do have to check the timetable as they are not that frequent), that will bring you to Hakone or Lake Ashi easily.
I stayed in a Japanese decor room with one bed, and it was a spacious room with tatami sitting area as well as a sofa. My room had a small balcony that faces the river and I was able to open the sliding doors to take in the beautiful river sounds and sights. The bedding was extremely comfortable, and the bathroom even had a Japanese Cyprus wooden soaking tub. I used the bathroom tub as I spent most of my time in the onsen, there too, and rotate daily so that you get to experience both.
Breakfast and dinner are included in my room plan and the food was Japanese Kaisaki and delightful.
Overall, I found a hotel to be peaceful, quiet and relaxing, but if you really want to do a lot of sightseeing and do not spend a lot of time in the hotel, then this is probably not the right place for you .
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Amazing service from wait staff at dinner and breakfast with gourmet transitional Japanese food. Onsen view was beautiful.
- 368benn (8/5): A nice stay in Kai Hakone - A nice stay in a great setting. We moved to Kai Hakone after a mistake with their sister hotel nearby…
I have to stay the hotel itself is certainly dated in comparison to its sister, Kai Sengokurha. The room Itself was fine, clean and traditional Japanese. Although it had a very distinct wooden smell which was tough to get used to!
A lovely view from the hotel and a great in room massage!
The onsen is STUNNING. Way better than the one at Kai Senkogkura and the best one we have found in Japan. It truly is in an incredibly peaceful setting and I was very impressed!
The food was also better that its sister and the staff couldn’t do any more for you!
- margaretmT3973NA (10/5): An Immersive Cultural Experience - Staying here is a once in a lifetime cultural experience! This is not for you if you are looking for a traditional western hotel but come with an open mind and have the most relaxing stay of your life. The rooms were large and peaceful in traditional Japanese style. The bed was supremely comfortable and we slept with the porch door open so we could hear the river running below us. We love our kaiseki meal for dinner and the breakfast was delicious and plentiful. There is no room service here so if you are a late night snacker bring something.
The absolute highlight of the stay was the onsen. It was so peaceful and beautiful. The hotel was full but both times I visited I was lucky to be the only person for at least part of my soak.
We stayed here the last night of our Japan trip and it was a perfect relaxing end to our trip! We absolutely loved our visit and cannot wait to visit more onsen ryokans.
- alixs2021 (4/5): Disappointing from the get go - We had a western room for three (two parents and our daughter - toddler age). We were due to stay for three nights but left a day early.
I’ll start with the positives:
Quite possibly the best two nights sleep I’ve had in years. Comfortable beds in a very peaceful and place.
Beautiful onsen and one of the original seven in Hakone.
The room was much larger than advertised and we had plenty of space.
Unfortunately, none of that outweighs the negatives:
The location, whilst beautiful, is very far outside of Hakone. Whilst we knew this in advance of booking we had no idea how difficult booking taxis / getting around would be and this should be made clear to guests when they check in. The day we left, we attempted to book a taxi the evening before and then again the next morning; however we were told it wasn’t possible. After waiting in reception for 50 minutes, and being presented with the bus timetable three times, we were eventually able to book our own on an app. The reception team were incredulous when we found our own solution. For a hotel in the middle of nowhere, they simply must have more options to get guests around other than offering a bus timetable, which is not practical when you have a toddler and several bags (not least because the hotel’s driveway is incredibly steep). Have a minibus which someone on shift can drive and charge guests for it… something other than nothing.
The meals are authentic but they really should offer basic, western options e.g. a continental breakfast instead of a traditional Japanese one. Our daughter ate nothing as it just wasn’t palatable for her.
For the price, the items in the fridge should be complimentary.
The staff, whilst friendly, are very over the top. It took us 45 minutes to check in because we had to go through far too many details. Such as when we would have breakfast / dinner each day. We weren’t able to go to the room on our own, we had to be shown and take the lift and wait for someone to follow. We’d had a stressful train journey and just wanted to settle ourselves…
The location, as mentioned, is lovely. But there really should be more outdoor space given you’re in the hills. It’s very disappointing that you couldn’t walk anywhere around the hotel.
There is some serious updating that needs to happen in some of the overlooked communal areas e.g. the lifts. They smell and clearly haven’t been renovated.
Overall, our experience at Kai Hakone was beyond disappointing. We saw the hotel in a magazine and feel like it must have been a paid for inclusion as nothing lived up to expectations and we were so looking forward to the few days there.
If you want to go, spend one night to experience the onsen and the view but 100% rent a car (which is another headache in Japan - look this up in advance). I wish we’d stayed somewhere else in Hakone; despite having the best sleep of my life, the times I was awake I was frustrated, disappointed and fed up.
- Cat (10/5): - Staff were very kind and respectful. Room was clean and spacious. Room had a gorgeous view of the river and trees. We enjoyed the very authentic traditional Japanese food served at breakfast and dinner. The public onsen is fantastic and the area also includes a sauna and a cold plunge. Be aware that guests with large tattoos are not permitted. Would not recommend the Japanese traditional room for guests over 5’8ft as the doorways are very low. My boyfriend had hit his head numerous times. Otherwise, our stay was great and would recommend Kai Hakone!
- Koray (4/5): - Property cannot service western travelers, lack of language is a big problem , it is not a luxury property with some nice spring pool and clean rooms , food variety and quality poor appeals only Domestic market, transportation is a problem also with limited taxi and hotels does not have shuttle, I ended up paying a $1 for boiled egg for my son which they refused to accommodate 2 days and finally agreed
- Andrew (10/5): - rooms were best we stayed at by far quality beds
- Pierluigi (10/5): - This was an unique experience. The hot spring bath, the Japanese traditional room overlooking the river, the kaiseki dinner. It was such a wonderful and relaxing experience. I wish we stayed 1-2 days longer. Highly recommended beautiful place.
- Alyssa (10/5): - Excellent service, experience l, and onsen. The food was great, nothing to complain about with the overall experiences.
- allplanetsearch (10/5): Awesome onsen, typical Japanese experience, far from town - We stayed 2 nights at the Kai Hakone in a traditional Japanese family room with two adults and two teens. Overall, it was a memorable experience for everyone. Here are some highlights.
Pros
- the family room was spacious and comfortable. It faced the river and the vegetation around it, which made it quite peaceful. The room had all tatami floors, sliding wooden doors, and traditional minimalist furniture. It also featured two futon beds on a raised platform plus a roomy living area. As past reviewers mentioned, the beds face away from the window, but you can still enjoy the views from the couch and chairs. In the evenings, the staff set up two additional, smaller futons for the kids in the living area.
- in-room shiatsu massages were great and reasonably priced.
- the on-site onsen (thermal pool) was super nice. Even though there were signs on how to use the spa, we had to observe a few Japanese guests first to get a better sense of the etiquette. Once we figured it out, we really enjoyed how calming and cleansing it can be. Since it rained a lot when we visited, we spent a lot of time at the onsen!
- everyone in the resort were wearing these cute PJs and jacket offered by the hotel as “room clothes.” You can wear them to the onsen and to the restaurant and/or lounge around in it. Very handy and relaxing.
- the typical Japanese food included for breakfast and dinner was served beautifully in private dining rooms
Cons
- the resort is about a 10 minute taxi ride from Hakone train station. There is nothing around it. To go anywhere, you’ll need to call a taxi, which takes about 10min to show up, or figure out the local bus schedule.
- there are no food options other than the beautiful Japanese food served for breakfast and dinner. For Western palates not used to fish and tofu for breakfast (or eel and jelly for dinner), a bailout option of something more known or everyday fare would have been appreciated.
All said, we enjoyed the hotel for a short stay and would love to come back in the future!
- gisellevaugne (4/5): Disappointing experience, not worth the money - Unfortunately a bad experience as it is totally overpriced and overrated. We were really looking forward to this experience and were disappointed. For two nights a total of 176‘600 JPY.
Halfboard breakfast and dinner nicely served in a private room. But Food tasteless and no choices. Breakfast Japanese, no alternatives served.
Positive: Rooms are spacious and big, wonderful view through a big window into the mountains/forest.
Negative: Room though quite old and shabby. Toilet room not renovated.
Friendly staff, but not helpful at all (no shuttle bus or taxis, 1-2 hours waiting time for a taxi upon checkout) though Hotel in the middle of nowhere… all guests were upset.
Onsen experience was the only nice thing. 42 degrees water and outdoor. Bit grubby, but okay.
It was raining during one day we stayed and smokers needed to walk through a floated garden (wet feet)
No recommendation for here.
- karangoenka (10/5): Wonderful experience ! - This was our first time in a Japanese rokayan and I think KAI is one of the high-end ones. The experience was great and something very unique for us which we really enjoyed. Overall, using their onsen, getting their in-room massage, and simply just being here was very relaxing. The quality of their onsen spa is also very good. The room size is big and very comfortable. Their breakfast and dinner is traditional Japanese and it’s served very well. I would highly recommend if you have any special dietary restrictions, it’s better to inform the hotel well in advance, otherwise they might not be able to provide you the meal. Also, if you want to take a taxi to anywhere in the town, better to book it from before.
It was really nice and comfortable to stay.
If you want to stay at a clean and Japanese-style inn, you can definitely choose this one.
You can eat wonderful kaiseki cuisine and take a bath in a hot spring where you can enjoy a picturesque view.
It is an inn where you can be healed by the murmur of the Sukumo River.
- Peduckk (10/5): Excellent experience - Awesome views of the surrounding mountains. I like classical architecture.
Lovely friendly staff, clean and beautiful rooms with a beautiful View.
Traditional dinners and breakfasts was perfect!
The Onsen is beautiful and there are 2 available sites for different experiences.
A bus stop right outside the hotel to make it so easy to discover the area.
Overall very well maintained hotel, we definitely enjoyed our stay.
- Wendi W Y (10/5): A memorable trip. - Excellent services.
Relaxing atmosphere and good experience with Japanese banquet meal.
- Verified traveler (8/5): -
- 1010petite-c (8/5): A nice hotel near Owakudani - Chosen Kai Hakone to celebrate my son’s 21st birthday.
We rent a car from Narita airport to Kai Hakone. To navigate, a telephone number can do but it doesn’t work for this hotel. Don’t know why? The entire was around 2.5 hour at about 10,000 yen toll fee in total.
Ordered a Japanese birthday cake with a box of flowers 3 days in advance. It was well arranged and the cake was consisted of 3 different flavors, special and delicious.
Rooms are spacious and clean except: there is mirror in the bathroom which is kind of inconvenient to do make up. The toilet area is a bit smelly and no hotel WiFi reception.
This hotel is not far from Owakudani - a volcanic scenic place highly recommended. It takes about 30 min by car.
Overall speaking, it was worth going for relaxation, celebration and family gathering.
- Verified traveler (10/5):
- SUWAPADEE (6/5): Unbelievable mistake - Before making reservation, I've sent email to the hotel if they can provide us porter service because there are total 7 adults and 3 child with a lot of luggages due to 11 days of trip. Ms.Kaori replied me yes they can provide me porter service so I made reservation and also reserve taxi for the guide at 20.00 who stay nearby since 17Sep. After reservation, I keep contact with the hotel about this to ensure everything is smooth with Ms.Eri and Mr.Rei.
One the day of arrival 18Dec, guide reconfirm with the hotel again but was informed that no proter service and no taxi until 22.00. What happen!!...The hotel keep confirm me these kinds of service until 2 days before arrival. The hotel inform me that it's call center at Okinawa who confirm me not the hotel. I don't belive that I heard this from the hotel in Japan. Fortunately, the hotel took small truck to help our luggage but no taxi anyway. I have to ask for another hotel where guide stay to pick up guide instead.
I don't know what happen but you should explian better than this.
- Verified traveler (10/5):
- Verified traveler (10/5): - The Ryokan was full of old world Japanese culture and traditions but with an updated elegance. The grounds where beautiful in the mountain country setting of Hakone. The hot spring baths where well kept, clean, and had upscale amenities. The staff was so polite and pleasant. As you drove away up the drive they would stand at the entrance and bow to you until you left sight. We will never forget our incredible stay!!
- Verified traveler (8/5): -
- L323232 (10/5): Outstanding! - This was the most peaceful and relaxing place I have visited in Japan. The onsen rooms are beautiful and the dinners are exceptional. We tried all of the food even though some of it was quite different to Western tastes and it was all delicious. The service was wonderful. It feels very private here. Our Japanese rooms were gorgeous and very clean. Our room had a river view and it was very relaxing to hear the roar of the river at night. I would definitely recommend Kai Hakone and can’t wait to stay again. Another plus is they have a little shop where you can buy locally made products and they run demonstrations on Japanese culture.
- SimonT962 (8/5): Wonderful Ryokan - This was our first experience of a Ryokan and so we had nothing to compare it to. It is strange indeed arriving in what looks like a 60's block of flats, and the decor inside of similar vintage! but the setting in the trees of the valley are what make this place special - and of course its Onsen
The rooms offer all you need in a simple Japanese way; but why oh why do the beds not face the wonderful view. Please turn them around!! Very strange one that.
The Onsen is the big selling point; set in and open to the trees it was the most beautiful one we experienced - but do watch one morning they switched the ladies and gents around - my wife got quite a shock, as did the gentleman she bumped into!
Dinner and breakfast all included, and the dinners were trully spectacular and will encourage you to try all sorts of things you might not otherwise.
service very helpful and friendly
the location is a 20 minute walk to Hakone (downhill there, uphill back) from where you can get the wonderful train up the valley.
We would definitely recommend apart from those beds facing the wall!!
- TimetoRunaway (10/5): Exceptional stay, even during a typhoon! - An exceptional resort. I was there during Typhoon Hagibis and in spite of this, the service and facility were perfect. Staff was beyond accommodating, even during a natural disaster! I absolutely loved the traditional decor, which really added to the atmosphere of tranquility.
- justjayjam (8/5): Lovely, modest luxury - From the outside, it doesn't look impressive - it's a 60s block of flats. But inside, the decor is lovely. The lobby is 60s/70s minimalist chic, and very relaxing. Our room was a suite, with a built in wooded bathtub. All amenities were provided. Our room faced the gushing river, which was magnificent to listen to - the doors slid all the way open. The room was very comfortable. We had dinner and breakfast in the Ryokan - you must choose the time for sitting for these meals. We didn't realise that until we got there because we didn't log into our reservation details to book. It wasn't clear from the emails and website that you had to do this, so beware.
I am vegetarian, and for me the food was so so. I had to write to them after I booked to let them know my dietary requirements. They were accommodating in that they made me special food, but I have to confess that the food wasn't very tasty. I appreciate that the cuisine in Japan is meat and seafood-oriented. But given that part of the culture also includes Japanese monk-food, which is vegetarian (and delicious), I was surprised that they did not take lessons from there. I probably wouldn't eat here if I stayed here again. My partner, who eats everything, enjoyed his food.
The onsen was lovely - it was just one giant tub. And they switch the tubs by gender each day (or perhaps twice a day). It's nice to sit in the tub and look out onto the river - the end of the tub is open to the outside. There are all the toiletries you could want. They also have ice lollies and teas in the onsen common room, which is lovely after a hot dip.
The location is down a little hill from the main road where the buses are, a 5 min walk. Not so great on the way up!
Service was excellent. We missed a mini meditation session as that was when we had our dinner sitting, so the lady who ran it came to our room to deliver the mini session, which was wonderful. The clothes they give you to wear in the ryokan are also of great quality.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - The resort was beautiful! The staff was incredibly friendly, helpful and accommodating. The standout for us by far, was the beautiful onsen and view! We had a great stay!
- Verified traveler (10/5): Signature architecture and decor style of hoshino - Perfect architecture and decor as a modern ryokan with traditional flavor and details, especially highlighting local wood craftsmanship. Food although not as great but still good
- Verified traveler (2/5): - 6
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Excellent hotel, excellent staff and amenities available. Onset very good
- heymitch (10/5): Just Perfect! 5+ - I want to thank everyone at the Kai Hakone Hotel for a wonderful stay. From checkin to checkout I couldn't have asked for a better experience. The people who work there are incredibly nice and helpful.
The traditional rooms are spacious and well appointed, with a great view of the surrounding hills and the soothing sounds of the stream running below.
The food is some of the best I've had in my 2 weeks in Japan. It's was absolutely fantastic and the presentation was just beautiful. My server was very nice and thorough in explaining all the different dishes, and there were many.
The Onsen was top notch as well. There are great refreshments to cool you down after a nice soak.
Really a great experience.
The food alone is worth the price.
While it may seem expensive I feel like I got a great value for my stay.
I plan on returning next time I'm in Japan.
Amazing place!
- Verified traveler (10/5): -
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Great place to visit , Excellent food, beautiful design
- dan (10/5): - Amazing location and onsen was a real highlight. Food was delicious and out of this world - fantastic!!!
- DONG YOUNG (10/5):
- YONG SANG (4/5):
- scott (10/5): Relaxing and tranquil! - Excellent Onsen and well worth the trip from Tokyo. Highly recommend!
- Chen chen (10/5): - Comfortable, good staff and very relax
- Verified traveler (10/5): - The room was stunning with a great river view to fall asleep to. The futon actually ended up being more comfortable than the beds.
- Verified traveler (10/5): wonderful experience though food is not enough - very wonderful experience
- Pui Kwan (10/5):
- elayboy (10/5): - Super friendly staff! We were offered plum drink and hot towels at check in.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Reception sucks and there is no bar or restaurant. - The reception is terrible and the English information they can share with you is very limited. Don’t arrive before 3pm, they’ll treat you like a burglar.
- Verified traveler (8/5): -
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Nice welcome check in.
Nice food and atmosphere.
Nice staff.
It would be nice if they have staff who speak English at the front desk 24 hours available.
