Guest Reviews
- M7779ODdebbiel (10/5): Amazing breakfast, great location and excellent staff. - Booked for a 2 night stay whilst visiting friends. Perfect location with reduced car parking fee using voucher issued by hotel. Great choice at breakfast and good home cooked food. Small hotel with lovely decor and good quality furnishings in bedroom. Very comfortable bed! Had a great couple of nights sleep. Will definitely return.
- jdicko (10/5): Perfect weekend away - We had a lovely weekend away and our stay at Browns completed the experience. Our room was cosy, bed comfy, towels were warmed, all the staff were welcoming. We would highly recommend staying here and will definetely return.
- Kate (10/5): - Great breakfast, comfortable room and supremely quiet given the central location.
- Jon (6/5): - Clearly understaffed and overpriced but no specific issues.
Breakfast service was slow but to be expected as one person seems to do everything ie reception, the bar and breakfast service.
Didn’t see any other staff.
Location is central to the town but no parking.
- Linda (10/5): - This is a lovely hotel, offering parking at a nearby car park for £8 per day, and only a 5 minute walk to the ferries to Greenways, a cruise along the River Dart and the Devon Steam Railway.
The staff were friendly and helpful and welcoming on arrival.
The rooms are clean and spacious, with unlimited tea, coffee and biscuits. The beds are comfy and also there are good hot showers.
We had a meal there on our first evening and it was excellent - freshly cooked, local ingredients. The breakfasts each morning were superb - a great choice, table service and everything that you could want was provided.
We recommend this hotel highly and will stay there again on our return to Dartmouth.
- Janet (10/5): - Lovely hotel in the heart of town. Staff were very good
- 408alisonw (8/5): One of the best hotel brekkies! - We booked here to celebrate my birthday for a long weekend. I was drawn by the reviews and booked in for 3 nights. We arrived here on a September Friday afternoon to be welcomed by the host who told us our room was ready and that the car park was a short drive away at £24 extra for 3 days. We paid £610 for bed and breakfast.
The hotel looks a bit tired, could do with a revamp, but it was ok. Our room was right at the top of the hotel with very steep stairs. Had I known this, it would have put me off booking, but the room was comfortable with its ensuite and lounge area. We loved that there was a bath and a separate shower.
The best part of the stay was breakfast. It was excellent with superb, locally sourced products. It's definitely one of the best hotel brekkies! The porridge was simply divine! Served with cream and muscovado sugar.
Its location is good, just a short walk from Dartmouth Central. We had a great meal at a local pub, Bayards Cove. We didn't fancy anything off the menu here. I had read it had a tapas menu, but there wasn't one available when we got here.
The bar was very quiet, too, which meant it lacked ambience, but maybe it's due to it being the end of season.
All in all, a good stay with an excellent breakfast!
- keith (10/5): Browns Hotel Dartmouth - Excellent stay here,Central location,comfortable stay,very clean
- Ryan (10/5): - Good
- John (6/5): Sleeping on a tilted bed - Good location and parking not a problem with the pass for the car park about 200m away (£8 per day) No complaints about the service or the breakfast. Host ensured we had a bathtub.
The only downside was the tilted floor in room 8, to the extent it was disorientating. Granted, it is an old building and alterations may be limited. However. if 3 legs of the bedframe were lengthened to make it horizontal that would certainly help.
- Trinh (10/5): - Excellent location. Friendly staff
- K9738FJmartins (10/5): Fantastic hotrl in a perfect location - Beautiful hotel and a great location to explore Dartmouth.
Attentive staff, great food and cocktails- whats not to like!
- Jim6591 (8/5): Comfortable, Cosy Hotel - We selected Browns Hotel for a one night stay in Dartmouth on a trip around the Devon-Cornwall coast. Being a quieter period, we managed to find parking only 20 metres from the hotel entrance which made baggage and check-in easy. Our upstairs room at the front of the hotel was spacious and comfortable. Being a hotel, we were prepared for a bit of noise from the bar but there was none. The breakfast variety was great and tasty. We would recommend Browns for a stay close to the heart of Dartmouth.
- Charlotte_Dorset123 (10/5): Great location and comfy stay in Dartmouth - Great little find. My room was clean, a good size and I slept well.
One road off the main shopping area of Dartmouth I found Browns. I have stayed in Dartmouth a lot over the years with work, but this was my first time at Browns and I’ve found a little gem.
Welcomed when I arrived by who I believe is the owner. Up a little flight of stairs and I found my room. I also found a little note with a glass of complimentary Prosecco to start. Very cute touch!
The rooms have basic facilities with a television, comfy bed, hairdryer (always important), and bathroom with shower. There is also tea and coffee making facility. It was perfect for a nights stay and I would happily have stayed a couple/few nights.
I also had a drink in the bar before bed and a lot of the locals were in. It is not noisy at all however.
Breakfast was delicious and there was a choice of continental and cooked. Both were great.
I would stay again.
- E3173AGcaroliner (8/5): Very enjoyable stay - Very quiet comfortable room. Very convenient central location for Dartmouth and parking nearby. Good food too. Delicious Sea Bass for dinner and good choice at breakfast.
- Ashleigh (10/5): - Browns is a fabulous hotel. The staff are very friendly, the breakfast is delicious and it’s in a fantastic location. Would definitely come back again!
- Elizabeth (8/5): - Good location in downtown Dartmouth. Outside of the hotel the street could have looked better. No
Off street parking is a problem.A large municipal parking lot was available with a permit
- boothrightn (8/5): Super Boutique Hotel - Super boutique hotel in the middle of Dartmouth. Beautiful rooms and good breakfast. We were there for 3 nights over a weekend and not one person in the bar or restaurant in the evening which is a shame, somewhat lacking in atmosphere and staff while perfectly pleasant, lacking in personality.
- X1707NWmatthewb (8/5): Central Dartmouth Accomadation - Warm and friendly stay at these comfortable rooms with bistro in the middle of Dartmouth. Parking arrangements work well. Car park is in the main town car park so it is worth dropping bags off before parking. Food hearty and seasonal. Hosts very accommodating . Price is in line with similar accomadation in area. Will return.
- S2494VLrobertb (10/5): Weekend in Dartmouth - Stylish boutique hotel in a great location. Friendly service, clean rooms and tasty breakfast with plenty to choose from the menu. The hotel is near to the shops and the waterfront and the lower ferry to Kingswear is within easy walking distance
- sueR384ty (10/5): Great stay at Browns - Warm welcome, hotel with character. Room very clean and nicely decorated. Good amenities. The evening meal was excellent, as was breakfast. Well done to Chef. The lady that looked after us was also friendly and helpful. Will definitely stay again f we're in Dartmouth.
Very convenient for Quay, marina and town
Managed to park for free outside hotel, but understand parking can be difficult. Hotel has voucher you can pay for to assist.
- Dreamer62209121298 (10/5): Great hotel for a few days in Dartmouth! - Great breakfast, particularly scrambled egg/smoked salmon. Immaculate rooms.
Would be nice to have an earlier breakfast option. Perhaps 7:30/8:00am.
Very enjoyable stay………………………………………………………………………………………………..,..,,…,….,,,!!!!!
- KAYODE (8/5): - Central location, nice property.
- K5286RQsimonl (10/5): Beautiful Dartmouth Hotel - great location, convenient parking close by, excellent room and facilities and a great breakfast, would definitely stay again and recommend to others, nice characterful hotel. Dartmouth is charming as great to see after the crowds leave.
- C7957GNrosiep (10/5): Delicious food, friendly staff and reasonably priced - My Mum and I enjoyed a truly delicious meal with fantastic service tonight. Would highly recommend. The restaurant is charming and the staff are very friendly and welcoming. The mushroom and coaches starter is delicious! We didn’t stay at the hotel but would look to book a room here next time we come to Dartmouth.
- N5706BTlisal (10/5): Excellent food - The Bistro At Browns. Very quiet when we arrived, thought we had made a mistake, but how wrong could we have been! Fab food and wine. 4 of us ate. Goats cheese starter was beautiful, and venison was delicious. Husband had sea bass special which was also good, and wine delicious. Restaurant tastefully decorated and everything immaculately clean, can’t believe they were not busier. Asked fellow diners what they thought and we all agreed food was exceptional. Please give this a go, a bit off the main track but a 2 minute walk and really worth it. Staff lovely, so thank you, had lovely evening.
- sharonr646 (10/5): Lovely and Relaxing. We stayed at Browns to celebrate my husband’s birthday, it was great. Room clean and spacious. - Wonderful stay at Browns, it was a great location. The staff were very friendly and helpful. Our room The Blue Suite was fabulous very specious with a great bath. Food at the hotel was delicious breakfast & evening meal. Very close to restaurants & pubs in walking distance. The Steam train & Boat trips are a must. I would definitely recommend a visit here.
- philipw618 (10/5): Fabulous overnight stay with dinner - A really charming family and managed hotel, restaurant and bar. It’s beautifully decorated and styled and well thought through in terms of what their guests would like and need. I had a standard double room which was super comfortable and incredibly clean. Well done to the housekeeping team!!
I also had the pleasure of eating in the restaurant having been tempted by the wide and interesting choice on offer. I had calamari and then the venison all of which was fabulous. Well done to the kitchen team!! Breakfast the next day was also great with a full English coiked to order.
All in all a fabulous stay and a place I would highly recommend for its friendly staff, comfortable and stylish rooms and great food.
Hope to see you again
- rosemary594 (10/5): Delightful Dartmouth - Browns hotel is right in the heart of the town so we didn't use our car once. We had a very comfortable stay, the room was very cosy and they even provided ground coffee for my early morning cuppa. The owner was very helpful with parking etc. There were delicious choices for breakfast. Recommend.
- BB8882018 (10/5): Lovely hotel, helpful staff, excellent breakfast - Lovely hotel a few minutes walk from the River. Very comfortable room with everything you need. Staff very helpful and friendly. Great that you can pick up a parking permit earlier than check-in. Excellent breakfast. Would definitely stay there again.
- Miss Jayne (10/5): - Fabulous family run hotel. Everyone is really friendly and the location is excellent. Would definitely recommend.
- 2171 (10/5): Fantastic hotel, bar and bistro! - Fantastic hotel, bar and bistro in the centre of Dartmouth a short stroll to the river.
Very welcoming, gorgeous and great size room, perfect! Breakfast included which is cooked to order and my compliments to the chef!
Ate at the Bistro and had a lovely meal, with great service, and the bar has a great choice as well.
Lovely complimentary glass of Prosecco on arrival which is a lovely touch.
Great to be able to park all day/night in the car park at the end of the road - couple of minutes walk away and well worth the charge for the voucher.
Will definitely be back for another visit, and would definitely recommend a stay here!
- Z8062QFelainec (8/5): Good location. - Lovely big bedroom. Generous tea, coffee, biscuits etc. breakfast was good with plenty of choice. Overall a pleasant stay but feel the hotel is in need of some updating. No car park wasn’t ideal as no ‘legal’ places to drop off luggage and pick up.
- jbonholiday (4/5): Not a boutique hotel - a disappointing experience - We felt taken advantage of. Not a 4* by any stretch. Here’s the list;
- charmless host
- no help for my wife with bags when I had to go and park the car
- had to pay before even seeing the room, and we can see why
- tired room, more a guest house vibe
- poor TV service, could have had apps and ability to log in
- bottled tap water
- grubby shower
- no nice touches in the room, and mass container generic harsh chemical toiletries NOT the branded ones in the promotional pictures
- the sheets smelt strongly of cheap laundry powder. Our nightclothes still smell of it after a wash.
- dirty window frame
- coat hook hanging off the wall
- charged for a dog but didn’t even provide a tray for our bowls
- the bean to cup coffee machine isn’t available for those having breakfast, “the policy is that it’s turned on at 1100” - you cheapskates. Gruel cafetière coffee only
- the bacon gave me a flashback about 20 years to a roadside van..sinewy, salty and a lurid colour.
- provide toast but no butter until asked
- no milk on the table both mornings, I took one from another
The whole place is run on the cheap. Almost £200 a night is disingenuous. They should be rerated to 3* guesthouse/hotel;… it’s got some twee little signs but it is not ‘a boutique stylish town house hotel’ - that’s deluded, and dishonest. There’s a market for budget places like this, we need accommodation at all budgets - but this isn’t a boutique hotel, it’s a 1970s guest house.
And if you’re at the front, you can listen to the uncouth guests at the pub opposite drinking outside on the pavement from your room for free.
There’s no way this place is worth almost £200 a night. Nothing about it was generous.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Friendly and relaxed
- jonathanpF7000CP (10/5): Gem of a hotel with great food - Fantastic hotel- great location, parking permit provided for nearby car park, quiet hotel and lovely decor in room. The breakfast menu is perfect and there is a good selection which is all fabulously prepared and cooked by JJ. A really good nights sleep too.
- Jonathan (10/5): - Great location, easy parking nearby and a truly superb cooked breakfast freshly cooked by JJ- really good.
- Voyager554762 (10/5): Lovely homely hotel in the centre of Dartmouth - Great hotel, great food, great hosts. The food was also delicious. We had breakfast and dinner one night and it was really lovely ingredients and home made. We loved it so much we’re hoping to come back again in August. Would highly recommend!
- lisajp161 (10/5): Lovely stay in heart of Dartmouth - Our first experience here both with rooms and food. We’ve stayed in lots of other places previously, but our favourite the Castle was being refurbed so we chose here. The rooms are lovely and the breakfast and evening food is really good. Lovely couple running it who were so welcoming and friendly. We stayed in room at front, but actually preferred our friends cheaper room at back, as it had a bath and also darker with no street lights.
- PDJ791 (10/5): Great little hotel - Great little hotel with friendly staff and very nice breakfast.
We stayed for two nights and I would very happily return for a few more.
Great location with only a short walk to the town centre or the river front. The parking voucher system was also very much appreciated.
- petebO9805SJ (10/5): Overnight visit to get together with friends. - Excellent service, friendly staff & lovely room. We were greeted warmly and although we were early our room was made available early. The parking voucher is an excellent idea as parking can be challenging in Dartmouth. Overall a fantastic overnight stay at Browns in Dartmouth. Thank you guys.
- Peter (8/5): - Good position in Dartmouth. Very helpful lady from Falmouth on the Bar but not enough staff at breakfast.
May be noisy in the summer but very convenient for town, restaurants and shops. Good to see they have Jazz entertainment on occasions.
- Carl (10/5): Good location, lovely hospitality - Nice B&B in a good location. Unfortunately room #6 on top floor overlooks pubs on the opposite side of the street and there were significant noise to disturb sleeping
- Chris (4/5): - A somewhat indifferent attitude on arrival. Poor info on parking vouchers. Breakfast staff on Sunday morning could have been more helpful.
Breakfasts generally good although not on Sunday morning when staff seemed unprepared.
- Heather (8/5): A great choice - Great location and the parking voucher is a lifesaver!
- Paul (8/5): - In general the hotel was very good and serving staff friendly. If they employed diligent house keepers I would give this hotel a much higher rating.
- Alison (10/5): - Lovely little hotel, easy access to the town. Staff very lovely. Very comfortable room.
- phil (10/5): - Good value
Great breakfast
Room 6 comfortable and quiet
Room ample size
Dislike sink in bathroom-ultra small
Great for 1 night
- Andrew (6/5): - The hotel was OK a bit tired. What shocked me was the staff member that checked us in and served us for breakfast ( may well have been a family member)) was far from friendly almost surly. At breakfast which sounds a bit petty but I simply asked for some hot milk for my coffee and she refused. I then asked again and said could she not simply heat up the cold milk in the small glass bottle the milk came in. She just said I can’t do that. For goodness sake even premier inns would heat some milk up for you. This was not a cheap hotel.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Great stay - Lovely clean rooms and ideally located.
- Antony (8/5): Great position - Very good breakfast was excellent , was not aware that dogs were allowed not keen on dogs in the resturant at breakfast or any meals
- Verified traveler (8/5): Generally excellent - A lovely hotel, close to the town centre. There was on-road parking directly outside, allowing two hours and overnight. We ate in the hotel, and the breakfast was excellent; the evening meal was not cheap - but this is Dartmouth! A nice room (no lift) with a view across the street, although the wallpaper was a little disconcerting! The only problem was that we had forgotten that we had paid Hotels.com for the stay, and were charged again on site - an error that was quickly resolved when it was pointed out, a few days later.
- Alexandra (10/5): Excellent hotel in perfect location – DARTMOUTH - Charming and helpful couple who kindly sprang into action to arrange an emergency plumber when the radiator fell off the wall in our room. Very comfortable and enjoyable stay. Thank you.
- Anthony (10/5): Very pleasant - Polite, friendly staff. Smooth check-in & out. Comfy room which was a nice temperature (usually find hotel rooms far too hot). Great food in the restaurant. Nothing to complain about!
- Alice (8/5): - This is a nice small hotel conveniently located and we enjoyed our stay. Bistro was excellent, staff were welcoming and friendly. Breakfasts a bit disappointing - slow service for cooked items on day 2 even when there were only four in the restaurant and the meat items were overcooked and toast cold. We booked the best room as a treat so very spacious and pleasant up on top floor but could be improved with a new mattress which fits the bed frame plus some larger cushions for back support when sitting up. We were also a bit surprised, given the cost of the room, that there was no tidying/replenishing of the room on day two of our stay - my husband had to fetch milk, tea bags and biscuits from three floors down when we returned from our day out, and clean the cups we’d left. Suspect this was an oversight but needs to be noted. Despite these points, we enjoyed our stay and especially the service and food at the bistro. The hotel is very well located, the parking arrangement is excellent and overall we loved our first ever visit to Dartmouth.
- helen (6/5): - hotel room was comfortable and clean.Food okay ,however service at breakfast was dire we arrived at 8.30 and did not receive our breakfast till 9.30 we received no form of apology or information as to why our breakfast took an hour to cook.
- Mary (10/5): We will return - Hotel central in Dartmouth. Bistro and bar which we used. Ate in hotel 2nd night food delicious
- Elizabeth (10/5): Weekend Away - Very warm welcome, great room, comfortable bed, good facilities etc and lovely toiletries.
Food was excellent - both breakfast and the evening meals we enjoyed. Thank you!
- Verified traveler (10/5): Nice Hotel - Nice hotel with friendly and helpful staff. Room was a little dated and the bathroom needed some attention to make it modern.
- Mark (10/5): Fantastic stay - We had a great stay. This is our third time at Brown’s and you are consistently excellent.
Lovely room, very tasty breakfast, everyone was very friendly and helpful.
Live music from Joe was a great bonus.
- RACHEL (10/5): - Absolutely fabulous and we will be back . It was a lovely hotel and the best breakfast with a lovely room and staff.
The location was perfect right in the centre and parking was free with a parking voucher that you put in your window for the whole week
- Joanna (10/5): - This hotel is an absolute gem right in the heart of Dartmouth! We were lucky enough to be staying in the suite at the very top of the hotel, which is a lovely, spacious room with a gorgeous bathroom. It is walking distance from all of the main highlights of Dartmouth (approx. 3 min walk from the riverfront), including restaurants and pubs. Breakfast was included in our stay and it was delicious. I will definitely stay here again!
- Deborah (10/5): - The owner was very friendly and obliging , The room comfy and right in the town a complimentary glass of Prosecco to all guests ‘ it’s a family run hotel so they go the extra mile would stay there again
- Desmond (8/5): - Nice little hotel
- Roger (10/5): - Great quality stay
- Verified traveler (10/5): Wonderful stay - Wonderful stay at Brown's - everyone was so welcoming and helpful and the food was excellent. We'll definitely be back!
- MRS A (10/5): Kind hosts and comfortable stay - Super hosts and team, extremely friendly, helpful and kind. Thank you so much for drying out our walking boots!
- Lorraine (10/5): - We had a lovely time staying at Browns, the staff were very friendly and couldn't have been more helpful. The food was fab as were the drinks at the bar. The bed was super comfy!

Ate in the restaurant, not the cheapest but very good food. And so was breakfast.
- Diane (10/5): Great licatio - Excellent service. Owners and staff welcoming, friendly and helpful.
- Charles (10/5): - Staff very friendly and helpful.great breakfast
Room very comfortable
And they provide a permit for free parking.
Thank you very much for a nice stay , will be back ......
- Richard (10/5): Great hotel - Comfortable room on first floor - very clean and spacious
Was a bit noisy from outside traffic but on a main road so expected
Breakfast was good and plenty of choice
Location was excellent for shops and restaurants
Free parking off site was a bonus - you could pull up outside hotel for dropping off bags and park free for two hours
Staff really friendly
Would come back
- Dorothy (10/5): Great hotel! - Beautiful room, excellent service and professional staff. Great food too! Felt very safe as Covid precautions well thought out.
- Kevin (8/5): Worth a visit - Nice town centre hotel. Friendly helpful staff and owners.
- Helen (10/5): - Nice stay, hotel a bit tired but very friendly stat. Breakfast delicious
- Alan (8/5): Excellent hotel - We had an excellent stay at this quirky but well furnished hotel.
The location was ideal for us.
The staff were friendly and very accommodating.
- Philip (10/5): A great find in beautiful Dartmouth! - A lovely welcome and delicious breakfast. Comfortable bed though quite firm but fine for us. Everyone we came across was a delight. We thought it was very good value too - not cheap but when compared to many Dartmouth options. Car parking pass also included though car park can be very busy in high season. We drove a little past the hotel and it was free on the street but make sure you check for parking signs as we were very lucky!
- Dave (6/5): One night stay - One night stay. Location is perfect for the town but the condition of the hotel for the £175 per night is disappointing. It is clean and tidy but the room looks tired and smelt musty.
The staff were friendly enough, however the bistro menu doesn’t have the biggest choice which was also a little disappointing.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - A nice hotel located in the centre of the town. 5 minutes walk from the shops and restaurants.
Lovely breakfast with local products, fresh and well-cooked English breakfast with plenty flavour.
Staff were very pleasant, specially the two young ladies working in the breakfast service and dinner service.
Very disappointed about the lack of cleaning in the rooms. Due to COVID-19, our room was not cleaned (although we stayed 2 nights). It is important to increase the cleanliness to avoid infections and to avoid entering the room does not make sense to us.
We had dinner one of the nights. As almost all the places were booked, they offered us to book a table with them which was a really nice touch. The food again was fresh, well cooked with plenty flavours.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Lovely modern hotel in the centre. Recommended. Could be a little more personal in its approach even with COVID.
- Chris (8/5): Efficient & Friendly - A great little hotel in Dartmouth. Clean & well presented with efficient and friendly staff. Good blue and worth a stay😄
- Bob (8/5): Browns Dartmouth - Comfortable, clean, good breakfast, just spoiled by smells from kitchen & restaurant pervading our room each evening
- Pauline (10/5): Fabulous - Fabulous hotel, modern, clean, Covid safe.
Very comfortable, they thought of everything.
- Mark (10/5): Weekend away - Lovely small hotel with very friendly staff. Our rooms was spotlessly clean and the breakfast was faultless.
Every possible precaution taken for COVID-19 regulations yet still remains as close ‘normal’ as possible.
Well done.
- Charlotte (10/5): Boutique Hotel, classy comfort. - Browns was the perfect find. Warm, cosy, clean, excellent food and welcoming helpful staff.
