Guest Reviews
- mariae150 (10/5): An excellent 'museum'/palace/hotel - An excellent, peaceful hotel in the small city of Galicia in Spain. Kept by a lady who loves antiques and maintains the place as an old mansion. Has only 7 rooms and a beautiful garden with a swimming pool at the back. About 7 km outside Ourense. Offers absolute peace and quiet if that is what you are looking for. Kept as a house with home-made cake for breakfast and fresh fruits.
- BCNMary (10/5): Feel like you're in a storybook! - If you grew up reading about manor houses, and never though you'd live in one - this is your chance! Beautifully renovated and decorated, with all the modern conveniences, but retaining the feel of stepping back five centuries...from the warn welcome from our hosts to the attention to every minor detail, our stay was perfect. The pool is a luxurious bonus to add to the feeling of being part of a 15th Century novel!
- garethw62 (2/5): Don't judge a book by its cover....... - On arrival you are almost overawed by the fabulousness of the setting and house. Don't be fooled. This place operates around the family and not for YOU!!
The older couple who seem to own the place are very thin on grace and charm and give the impression that you are a mild inconvenience despite paying for the privilege. The son is better but we had one interaction with him of value over the 3 days we stayed.
Our bed was very uncomfortable and the house is pretty dusty really with lots of useless space for guests - which you can't use. If you do roam you're usually watched by one of the older pair as if they suspect your up to something.
True the gardens are lovely but most the furniture is broken, unusable or dirty.
The nearest restaurant which only starts serving food at 9.00 pm is not great and pretty downmarket. You can eat in the garden (picnic) at night if you can find a shop but expect to clean up your own furniture. We got a "face" for asking for some plates.
And as for the barking dogs at night (we think there is some sort of puppy farm next door? Between the bad bed and howling canines we left exhausted.
Oh and there is the poorest internet connection ever.......it basically does not work.
The only consolation for this place is its breakfast and the very nice woman who served it up. She was charming.
This place did not do what it said on the tin.
- Badger885 (10/5): A shame we only stayed one night! - This pazo is a fantastic traditional Galician house which has been lovingly turned into a small bed and breakfast. The owner was very welcoming and the breakfast in the huge kitchen was a special experience. The room was huge and very comfortable. It was amazing to have stayed in this hotel on our way to the coast. There is plenty to see in the local area, including the Ribeira Sacra and Canon do Sil. Stunning location!
- ChloeK742 (10/5): Magical charm - Pazo de Bentraces is truly special. A beautiful 15th century manor house lovingly restored and exquisitely furnished, yet with the charm and hospitality of a family home. Set in beautiful gardens and woodland, with a gorgeous swimming pool, Pazo de Bentraces is an oasis of tranquility. It's a family run business and with just four rooms and two suites, you feel well looked after, yet have the space and silence to truly unwind. Guillermo speaks perfect English and is always happy to help, whether it be with suggestions for outings or entertaining our animal loving son with his friendly dog, tortoise and turtles. Our suite was elegant and palatial with a beautiful private roof terrace. The small town of Ourense is charming and delightful to visit to seep up the history and enjoy the tapas and shopping. Close to Santiago de Compostela, Vigo and northern Portugal, there are lots of excursions within striking distance, though we had a lovely restful time just at the hotel. We hope to return.
- aleksejsc (10/5): Majestic stay - Sometimes it is important to feel , touch and became a part of history. This pazo gives it all. Sad only that it has limited services, with some upgrades they could become very, very busy, but it looks that it isn't they aim.
Practical things:
rooms are specious
amazing surrounding and pool
bed is more or less ok
temperature in the room could be a bit higher, at mid season it is chilly
rooms are clean but not too much, appearantly to keep spirit of history
think about eating out, there is no option on a site or at nearest surrounding.
- rp825 (8/5): Used as a base during son's wedding in Celanova - Wonderful room in a fantastic historic building, beautifully decorated . Ample car parking but access a bit difficult for a large vehicle, which we had, particularly at night.
Very helpful staff, it is run by the family who own it, They put on a late breakfast for us the day after the wedding without being asked , we had returned at 4.00 a.m. that day.
We were not able to take full advantage of the grounds, which seem extensive and impressive.
Do not expect normal hotel facilities, this is an upmarket bed and breakfast.
The Asador Rosina is the nearest restaurant and very good, see my review, but a short car journey away, Ourense a bit further.
- 321sr (10/5): Exquisite, Peaceful, Magical - My husband and I celebrated our 20th wedding anniversary at this lovingly restored 15th century building. Every detail was elegant and "old world." It looks exactly like website photos. Owners are extremely welcoming and helpful; Guillermo speaks excellent English. Ourense is a lovely small Galician city with cafes lining the cobble stone streets in its Plaza Mayor. Hotel is in a very quiet and secluded spot, so be sure to ask how to find the entrance. We wish we had much more time to just relax there.
- Andrey-Mazurov (10/5): Unforgettable stay at Pazo de Bentraces - We stayed at Pazo de Bentraces in July for 4 nights (initially planned 3 but couldn't help to extend our stay one more day). Place is really Medieval Manson of XV century with a green park around and rather big swimming pool to refresh yourself after hot summer day. That is family driven business and we felt ourselves very comfortable with enough attention to our needs and wishes. We travelled with two small pets - Yorkshire and Westie terriers and worried a little if there could be troubles.. But luckily everything was OK - Hotel is really "Pet-friendly" as advertised. So we were grateful for that to the family managing hotel. Room was really nice, cozy and clean - you don't feel like in a hotel in the room but like at home in a bed-room there. Breakfast is another memorable thing - don't miss it. As for the lunch and dinner - Ourense town is only 5 minutes driving and you could find a lot of good restaurant there (we found one by TripAdviser). Plus in 2 km there is "Asador" restaurant that was recommended to us to visit for late dinner when we arrived. So, we highly recommend Pazo de Bentraces and definitely plan to come back again one day.
- Cotswolder74 (10/5): Very relaxing stay in Bentraces - Pazo de Bentraces is a great find. The couple who run it have superb taste and did a great job of renovating the building and gardens.
They were exceptionally kind and eager to help us whether it be with a bottlem of wine in the evening, or baby sitting my small son allowing me and my father to go out to eat.
They also gave some great tips on local attractions, restaurants etc.
A lovely part of Spain made even more enjoyable by staying at this beautiful place.
- carebearnyc (10/5): Delightful accommodations - My family stayed here for 4 nights on our Spain holiday this Summer. This is a historic home on the hillside (7km outside of Ourenze, a city known for its Roman bridges and baths) in Galicia. It is a beautiful and unique manor home, each guest room is elegantly decorated. The hosts are exceptionally friendly and gracious. The house comes with a beautiful swimming pool, an amazing English style garden and well manicured ground surrounding the property. You can opt to take breakfast which we highly recommend because it is served in a welcoming large kitchen. Everything about the house has some history to it, which made our overall experience that much richer. If you are a traveler who is interested in local history and prefer to stay in historic places, rather than the cookie cutter hotel chains, then I highly recommend the Pazo. It is a transporting experience!
- marksewell (8/5): A good place to stay if you like historic buildings - My wife and I stayed for one night on Good Friday. The welcome and service throughout was very good, and you have the feeling of being warmly welcomed into someone's home. It is not what we would classify as being a hotel, as there are just too many personal family items all over the house. Pazo de Bentraces is very clean and comfortable, and if you like historic, old fashioned houses then it is a good place to stay. If you like modern, contemporary accommodation then stay away. It is a beautiful old building with lovely peaceful grounds. We felt the 104E B&B price we paid was slightly on the high side compared with other hotels we have stayed in in Galicia. Supper was not available, but we were directed to a local Michelin starred restaurant "A Rexidora" just 5 minutes walk away, where we had an exceptional meal for the bargain price of 64E inclusive for the two of us. This local restaurant is a real bonus of staying here. Some people will absolutely love Pazo de Bentraces and others won't, so just be clear when you book what you are booking.
- MaureenM624 (10/5): Amazing Hotel - I stayed here a week in the Autumn and had a truly amazing time with my mother. The hotel and grounds are exquisite and each room is individually decorated. It is a great place to relax and the service is very friendly and personal.
- EckhardtK (10/5): Exceptional - Unique and beautiful country house, nice decoration and furniture, gardens with beautiful corners, friendly personel/owners. Absolutely recommendable to relax a couple of days, enjoy the Pazo, the idyllic charm of the common areas, gardens, halls.
