Guest Reviews
- Edward (8/5): - the location was good, close enough to everything that is was an easy 2-5 min walk but out of the way enough that is was quiet at night. Onsen facilities were quiet and relaxing. english labelling wasnt available in the washing area made using the washing machine abit difficult
- Paul (8/5): -
- Robinson (10/5): -
- Kevin (8/5): - Clean, well located with a good breakfast A little noisy late at night with a carport next door and food trucks
- Matthew (8/5): Enjoyable and comfortable - The staff were friendly and helpful. The location was great for access to ski areas, restaurants and cafes. The bedding was very comfortable, with a thick mattress and futon. The individual air-conditioning was excellent. The shared bathroom/onsen was clean, hot (but not too hot) and relaxing, and the ski storage / dry room facilities were spacious. The buffet style breakfast also made for a great start to the day. Nothing really. But using the toilet in the room is a challenge if you are over 5 feet tall ;-)
- David (5/5): -
- Jessie (10/5): Would highly recommend to anyone wanting to stay in Akakura Onsen. - We had an amazing stay at Hotel Myosen! The room was clean and big enough for our family of 4. The room was warm and the floor beds were very comfortable. We booked a room with a toilet and shower, which was clean and new. The staff were very helpful and friendly. The breakfast was delicious. The location is perfect, very close to the Main Street (where you can find everything you need) and close to the ski slopes. My 4 year old daughter was happily able to walk.
- Sagafili (7/5): - Helpful staff Na
- EVAN (8/5): -
- Wendy (7/5): -
- Tatiana (10/5): Would definitely come back again. - Great location, lovely breakfast, friendly staff, great shower.
- James (6/5): Good accommodation if you can get it cheap enough. Breakfast was average at best - Location Our room was very noisy and the bed collapsed several times. Breakfast was average
- Bronson (6/5): Good simple accommodation, in a handy location. - Ease of access and good location relative to town facilities and chair lifts. Very convenient to have onsen in your hotel. We had breakfast included in our accommodation package, we had breakfast the first morning which was great. But the kitchen was closed the rest of our stay so we had to eat out.
- Leigh (10/5): -
- Yuxiao (9/5): Good location, friendly staff, and nice clean room -
- Leah (9/5): Happy we stayed here! - Great location to access the ski resorts in Myoko with shuttle buses a short walk away. Very easy to walk to akakura onsen ski lifts, restaurants, bars and convenience store. Futon beds were comfortable! Cory was really helpful too. It definitely met our expectations. We loved the more traditional Japanese style room but if an en-suite is important (rather than onsen) then book a western room.
- Kellie (9/5): - Loved the onsen and the HUGE drying room. The only thing missing is somewhere to communally gather with a large group.
- Julia (6/5): Great for couples but wouldn't recommend for groups or families with young children. - Comfortable beds, warm rooms, great location within easy walking distance to restaurants and ski slopes. No shared living space to spend time with friends. No private showers. Breakfast was good but frequently had to wait for food to be topped up. Nick and Susan very helpful however, when they were not on duty, other staff members unable to assist with transport arrangements as didn't speak Japanese. This was stressful when urgent arrangements required due to injury to my husband.
- Alfred (7/5): -
- Zane (8/5): Would stay again. Cory was great - The location was great. Traditional feeling. Super close to the rental Aoyama Walking up/down stairs to the drying room but really to much of an issue, just hard in ski boots
- Maggie (9/5): - Loved the traditional Japanese lodge feel, great onsen, and never felt crowded
- Sheryl (10/5): - Great location, walkable to the slopes. It would be great to have more communal areas
- Ky (10/5): -
- Rob (9/5): We had a very enjoyable stay and would definitely stay here again. - The staff were great; friendly, helpful, and very accommodating. Their local advice was also much appreciated. The location for us was ideal, right near restaurants, onsens, a thai massage place, a rental shop across the road, and within easy walking distance of the ski slopes. The bedding was very comfortable, with a thick mattress and futon that kept us warm and comfortable at night. The shared bathroom was clean, hot, and relaxing, with real onsen water, and the dry room facilities were well organised. Nothing major to fault, though my Japanese wife mentioned it would have been nice to have a rice and miso soup option at breakfast on some days.
- Jessica (6/5): -
- Emily (10/5): Exceptional -
- Sue (6/5): Pleasant -
- Paul (6/5): Good location with basic accommodation. - Location was central to Akakura and very easy to walk to everywhere. Only 5 min walk to Akakura Onsen Ski resort. Rooms were clean and comfortable. Onsite onsen was not very clean and everytime we wanted to go was always booked for private use. We ended up going offsite and using a better onsen which was only 2min walk away so not an issue.
- Alex (8/5): Very good -
- Millicent (8/5): Very good -
- Viliam (5/5): Great location, suitable for younger crowd. - Excellent location, walk distance to ski lifts, shuttle bus and many restaurants and shops.
Nice onsen. Our room was decorated in japanese style - comfortable.
Ski /boots dry room well set up. Impossible to tell who was a staff member or a guess.
Dan & Ella in kitchen were the only one who seem to interact with guests.
- Laurence (8/5): Enjoyable & hosts were welcoming & helpful with watever queries.. - Close to everything.
- Georgina (9/5): Superb - The staff were next level helpful and the location is great! The facilities are a little dated, paint peeling, some doors didn’t shut well. Drying room didn’t dry the skin clothes much. But overall we had a great stay! Would stay again
- Scott (6/5): Pleasant - Good position and clean Breakfast was lacking.
- Jason (10/5): Great stay! Looking forward to returning. - Great stay! Location was perfect. The top of main street and a short walk down the hill. Friendly staff. The team organised to have my snowboard bag couriered to the airport for day of departure which was infinitely better than having to drag it through to Tokyo for a few days. Hotel is very close to all the great dining/drinking options and entry to the ski area is a short stroll up the street. I made good use of the onsen and was fortunate enough to have it all to myself on the daily. You're able to book 30min sessions as well. Slept incredibly well on the traditional Japanese bedding. Would absolutely stay here again!
- Sophie (2/5): Akkaura was a small little town which was nice to visit but we won’t go back to this hotel. - Close to the slopes and the restaurants. Nice with in-house onsen. Cold rooms and poor breakfast which wasn’t finished when opening in the morning. The staff was constantly behind in filling up for all the guest who had to wait in a ice cold room. We sat with outdoor clothes on.
- Craig (9/5): Fantastic location and great service from the owner Nick. Many thanks. -
- Robert (9/5): Enjoyable and very comfortable - Great comfortable king bed in perfect location to hit the slopes and anything in town, great onsen and really nice ensuite in room with friendly staff that go out of there way to help
- Suzanne (9/5): Superb -
- Aaron (10/5): Will be back - Friendly staff, walking distance to everything you need including ski lift. Great breakfast! Not applicable
- Thomas (10/5): Exceptional -
- Aiden (10/5): Convenient, comfy, good price. - Close to the main road.
Had everything you needed.
Staff very friendly
Breakfast very yummy. n/a
- Rose (9/5): Superb -
- Cruice (3/5): Unfortunately we wouldn’t stay here again - Location and cleanliness were great. Overpriced Family room with ensuite.Very basic rooms with no fridge, minimal storage for clothing/luggage. Common areas not heated including Breakfast Dining Room. Breakfast is $15 per person and very ordinary - cold Porridge and Broccoli served with not enough stock of scrambled eggs, bacon, milk, juice..
Laundry doesn’t include a dryer. Airers provided in rooms.
No discounted lift ticket vouchers as stated on website.
Room was serviced once during our 11 night stay and Nick advised we would be told what day this would occur. This did not happen.Had to request extra Shower Gel, toilet paper and tissues on multiple occasions.
Host Nick is unprofessional and lacks customer service skills, doesn’t have a good knowledge of the village and its restaurants, facilities. Didn’t know where the Myoko Shuttle departure point was or that you can’t buy lift tickets from rental shops unless renting snow gear from them. Very new restaurant with traditional Japanese menu has just opened 3 days prior to our stay and he wasn’t aware of where/who this was.
Was overheard complaining to his staff about a guest who hadn’t booked parking at the hotel.
He was really only concerned with guests wearing their slippers inside and keeping the doors closed to stop cold draughts and house rules.
I wouldn’t recommend this hotel for families.
- Gabrielle (10/5): Such an amazing stay! Location is perfect and the breakfast was delicious. Onsen was great! - This is an amazing hotel in such a great location! So close to the Main Street but just far away from it that you feel secluded and quiet! Facilities were very clean and the onsen was great!
- Vella (9/5): Great place to set yourself up for skiing. - Great place to stay whilst you ski. Basic but comfortable. Breakfast was good and the staff were friendly.
Good drying room for ski boots etc. The light in the room was not a great colour and if we had 4 people in the room it would have been a bit tight.
- Clare (10/5): Overall wonderful and would recommend to anyone asking for a recommendation of accom in Myoko - The room was very spacious and had more than our anticipated amenities. The shower pressure was unlike any other we experienced in Myoko and the Onsen was LOVELY!
- Julie (4/5): Very basic accommodation without many of the Japanese nice touches. -
- Campbell (8/5): Very good - Great friendly welcoming staff
Nice location for bars and restaurants in town
- James (6/5): Pleasant -
- Noah (8/5): Great location and very helpful owner who’s more than willing to accommodate for all your needs. Great location, facilit - Great location, facilities were clean and accessible, plenty of space for snow gear storage, room AC worked amazingly and the private onsen was a great touch. A complementary shuttle bus would be very helpful for when arriving/departing at Myoko Kogen Station etc otherwise very happy with our stay. Only saying this as sometimes it can be difficult getting onto local transport.
- Caley (6/5): Pleasant -
- Aaron (7/5): Good - Great location in Akakura Onsen, owner Nick always on hand to assist or give information, bus stop/snow shuttle and Main Street eateries all within 5 minutes walking distance, soak in the lovely natural geothermal onsen while watching the snow fall outside, great in room aircon and drying rack for drying clothes etc, super comfy foam ‘futons’ and real pillows 🤩🤩
- Tim (5/5): Just plain mediocre. Rooms fine but a manager with a personality would make it worth returning. - Rooms were as expected and more than fine. Location is pretty good. Overall, there was nothing drastically wrong with the stay but it was just an average, mediocre experience due to the manager. The rooms were fine and as we booked. The facilities were fine as well although breakfast was terrible and a waste of money given the cafe's up the street. The main impact was a grumpy manager who seemed more interested in policing who was wearing slippers than caring about our overall experience. Not once did he enquire about our experience, what our day was like etc etc but I tell you what, we got pulled up for not wearing slippers!! I've stayed in far worse but I won't be back.
- Carlandrea (7/5): Good - The hotel is in a super location, within 7 minutes walk to any of the Akura Onsen base lifts.
There are few parking spaces in front of the main entrance for free for guests that must be reserved,
The room was very nice, as well as the onsen.
Very appreciated the possibility to reserve one of the 2 onsen rooms for half an hour between 8 and 9 in the evening.
Breakfast was more than ok. It is possible to reserve the car parking only with the booking of the room.
It was not possible to reserve it at the check-in, even if there were still some spots available
Luckily there were not many people with their own car so we could use it anyway, but we could not find any sense to this policy.
The website is not up to date: at our time of staying we could book some services and only find out later that have not been active anymore since several years.
There is not a beer vending machine in the building anymore, even if it is in the pictures of the property
The smell of fried food was constantly on the staircase.
The staff started to clean the rooms of checked out guests at 7 am
- Dez (6/5): Pleasant -
- Henry (6/5): Nice place to stay and super close to great skiing. - Nice onsen and good drying room Room was very small for 4 of us sleeping on the floor.
- David (9/5): Good option in Akakura - Hotel was clean and warm. Beds were comfortable for futons as they provided an additional cushioned 'mattress'. The onsen was clean and warm, rather than hot, so it would suit most people. Nick was always friendly and helpful whenever i had any questions. There was no issue with organising bags to be onforwarded to our next destination (and they turned up before we expected). All in all Myosen is a well located and comfortable place to base yourself for a ski trip in Akakura. We stayed a week and really enjoyed ourselves Unfortunately had the weirdest toilet i have encountered. It was at 45 degrees, rather than against a wall. This took out a big chunk of the available space and made it pretty awkward to use.
Breakfast - some more variety would have been welcome, and besides rice there was no Japanese options. Understandable as almost everyone staying there was a westerner, however i have stayed in a number of places in Japan that have had lots of western guests but have still provided Japanese options for breakfast.
- Paula (9/5): Superb -
- Andrew (9/5): Superb - Loved the location and the staff were very helpful with arrangements including organising luggage transfers and taxis to and from the hotel. The option of a private onsen worked really well for our family too.
- Gemma (7/5): Budget friendly traditional ryoken - excellent location in myoko - Excellent location, large cosy tatami mat rooms, we loved the private spa and the friendly vibe. Overall good value for money. Wasn’t as clean as other places we’ve stayed in Japan, the breakfast was cheap but fairly rudimentary, the room could have been more practical ie more hooks, foldaway table, more hanging spaces
- Lara (10/5): Perfect location, great rooms at really affordable rates. Will definitely return. - Great location, spacious rooms. Close to ski fields.
- Shannon (10/5): Great family stay, great location - We stayed at Hotel Myosen as a family of 4 (2 adults, 2 teenagers). We stayed in the Japanese standard room, with Japanese style futon beds (best sleeps we had on our trip to Japan!). The room stayed warmed, and we felt we had enough room to spread out. The breakfast was good each morning, and we booked the private onsen as a family for each afternoon after the slopes. Location was great, about a 5min walk to both the Yodel and Kumado lifts at Akakura Onsen ski area. It was an easy couple of minutes walk to the main strip of restaurants also. We got the city bus from the station, which was about a 10min ride. The owner was exceptional, always greeting us good morning, and met all our needs with booking a taxi back to the station, and fixing a couple of things in the room. Overall, we’d stay again! Nothing, everything was good
- Tom (1/5): Great location, everything else disappointing. - Location Everything else
- Jonathan (10/5): Had a great stay at Myosen, Nick and Susan were very helpful hosts. I would definitely bo back! -
- Michaela (7/5): Great no frills hotel in a fabulous location. Friendly and helpful staff. Basic facilities. - Great natural onsen and fabulous location Basic facilities
- Greer (6/5): Low frills holiday option - Decent sized room, walkable from the slopes. Nice view. The shared (note no privacy unless you book at a selected usually inconvenient time) onsen was a good temp not scolding hot for unacclimatised western bodies as we found some in Nozawa were. Water felt fresh. Underwhelming compared to the other places in the region we have stayed this trip. Would ask for more pics next time. Felt in need of a refresh. Toilet broken on base for example. Coffee table and cushion past its use by date. Etc. Wouldn’t have got out feeling short changed if it wasn’t a lot more for a lot less than the other two places we stayed and really enjoyed the friendly genuine hospitality in. But in itself it’s fine. Just needs more accurate photos and descriptions. Might suit a large group of students or a family wanting to share a room for cheap but if you’re a couple on the same budget I’d suggest seeing what you can get elsewhere or in other popular ski villages nearby.
- Henry (10/5): Will definitely come back! - Traditional Japanese styled rooms were very cozy and beds really comfortable, best sleep I've had in awhile! Private hotel onsen was also very nice. Plenty of storage space for snowboards/skis, and to dry out clothing
- Athit (9/5): Superb -
- Olivia (10/5): Really comfortable, great facilities and great customer service - Amazing stay and great room! The beds were extremely comfortable and the onsen was perfect after being out in the snow all day. The property is in a perfect location on the main street. The owner was also super helpful booking a taxi for us and giving a discount for ski rentals. Would highly recommended definitely great value for money! Nothing
- Luke (7/5): Good location, typical Japanese style room with relaxing Onsen - Typical Japanese style room sleeping on Tatami mats. Futons and pillows a bit thin. Management provided a trifold mattress to help when requested. Onsen was great.
- Jakub (10/5): Exceptional - Great location and clean. Very helpful owners. Nil
- Sophie (9/5): Superb - Had a lovely stay at Myosen. The property was in a fantastic location, being just off the main strip meant it was reasonably quiet. Plenty of space for the two of us with a really nice clean and comfy room. Heating was spot on with a good temperature in the room from the air con. Staff were all super friendly and helped us out. We have travelled using onsens before so are quite comfortable with this and the shared shower space. I found this onsen to be very clean and any reviews about smell or things in the water obviously do not understand that this is extremely natural in a Japanese Onsen.
- Tom (2/5): Recommendation; Take an other hotel - Location is good Room was cold, you need to turn on a loud heater while sleeping. Hotel itself is also cold, you need to wear your jacket inside. The chairs in the room were gross, the curtains had about 20 holes in them, the ligt in the small hallway was broken, the toiletdoor and walls had stains on them from probably a few stays before us. The staff are backpackers which walk around in lounge clothes. they seem to have a different standard of cleaning, which is far from the standard in japan. The breakfast was fine, but got more diverse once more people checked in to the hotel. The hotel host was passive agressive towards us. When we told we felt cold in the room, he went in to our room and put up the heating to 30 degrees, which is not the most pleasant when you just skied the whole day in cold temperatures (big headache). The shared showers have warm water, but note, you can not stand and shower and you are sharing the showers with other ‘naked’ guests. All in all defenitly not what I expected for this price point.
- Gareth (10/5): Ideal quiet location yet close enough to all amenities and chairlifts - The beds were super comfortable
The staff was super friendly and helpful during our whole stay. Nothing
- Irwin (9/5): Convenient. Close to all facilities including ski lift, restaurants, hiring shops. - The onsen is a welcome soak after a day's skiing
- Joanna (8/5): Very good - Great support from Nick at reception. The hotel was very clean and well kept, with basic facilities. Good value, plentiful, hearty breakfast. Good drying room and plenty of storage room for skis/snowboards. Comfortable Japanese style beds with tatami floor rooms, which we really appreciated. The onsen was lovely at the end of a day on the slopes, with the option of a private booking time, during certain hours. Within easy walking distance of lots of restaurants. We have been spoiled in the past by ski in/ski out hotels. We had a 400m/ 6 minute walk to the slopes.
- Nigel (3/5): Poor - Good location. It’s very old and services are basic. Pricey for what it is.
- Kim (8/5): Easy going, comfortable and cost effective with absolutely excellent location. - This is a small and friendly older style ski hotel/chalet with 21 rooms total.
We stayed in a Japanese style room with private toilet and contained balcony at the front of the hotel. The room was big and comfortable. (see photos from the window view!)
The tatami beds were actually sponge mattresses with a top layer and the most comfortable we slept on during our trip.
It was great having the private toilet, the onsen was hot and delightful and never busy as people are coming and going on their own schedules. I enjoyed having one late morning!
The location is excellent, probably one of the best for the area, 5 mins to Ski field, Joeys rentals (and excellent coffee and toasties) next door, 3 mins from the main street and all restaurants.
Hotel Taito is 1 min next door with amazing Yoga and a fancier (busier) Onsen. Also there are a couple of foodtrucks there too.
It was so easy, and so quiet compared to Niseko!
Nick and Susan were super responsive, friendly and there to help. It gave the place a more homely feel.
Would/will definitely stay again. There is a discount for return customers. The bathroom was always clean and showers fine at all times.People should be aware of Onsen washing etiquette and follow it. I know the onsen was cleaned every single morning, so people not using it correctly meant it wasn't particuarly nice later in the evening. Visitors take note and make yours and your fellow travellers onsen experience nicer.
Feedback not negative - just ideas :)
Perhaps the lobby could be set up to be a bit more social for evenings. More furniture, a book library and perhaps somewhere to plug in an ipod.
Breakfast was hot and filling, a single option change each day would be good for those staying more than a week.
- Tammy (9/5): Superb - Hotel Myosen, staff were excellent, Nick went above and beyond assiting us with planning and booking transfers. Hotel is clean, central and well suited to skiing families, private onsen booking available and clean Western beds, and connecting family rooms. Western buffet is a good way to start the day. It is maybe a tiny bit expensive ,but it is a ski holiday in peak season. Overall, it met our expectations ,not five stars, so don't expect that.
- Adam (10/5): Fabulous ski holiday - It was great having our own room with a private bathroom, which was nice and new. The skiing was AMAZING and not very busy. We arrived for Xmas and it was like we had the mountain to ourselves. Nick was very helpful with anything we needed, especially booking taxis in Japanese. The walk to the ski lift was a little difficult at first but we soon found our feet.
- Gregory (7/5): Good - Very convenient location
- Guilherme (8/5): Very good - Location, onsen, ambiance. Thin mattress, weak coffee, lack of showers.
- Tracie (9/5): Great value for money. Connecting family room was perfect for our family of 6. - Great location, Nick and staff were so nice and super helpful. Breakfast was really good. Rooms were clean and comfy. We had a connecting family room which was spacious enough for our family of 6 and had a private shower/toilet. Loved being able to book the Onsen for private use.
- Tegan (8/5): Traditional Japanese experience with clean facilities, excellent staff and convinient location. - Hotel Myosen was clean and comfortable. The rooms were neat and warm (new aircon units in each room). Sleeping on futons on the tatami mats was a great experience. The enclosed verandah was lovely. The onsen was beautiful - we got used to traditional Japanese bathing/showering quickly and the majority of the time we had the bathroom facilities to ourselves. The dry room was large and convenient. The location was excellent, a short walk from both Akakura Onsen ski lifts. The owner/manager Nick went out of his way to make us feel welcome and comfortable. He quickly delivered a kettle when we arrived and organised multiple dinners, taxis and a luggage delivery for us. The staff were always smiling, attentive and polite. We will definitely return to stay with Nick and his team again. Thankyou! No clothes dryers
- James (10/5): Perfect, keen to get back. - The staff were very helpful, the Onsen/spa is a treat, good after a long day skiing.
- Paul (3/5): Not very enjoyable - The location was great There was no vibe in the hotel and signs up about touching things that either evicted you or fined you. Didn’t feel welcomed or comfortable being there.
- Gillian (9/5): Superb -
- Richard (9/5): Superb -
- Stewart (10/5): Exceptional -
- Stephen (10/5): Lovely, there for the snow but its nice to come back to somewhere comfortable at the end of the day. - Breakfast was great, rooms nice, onsen excellent Susan was sooo helpful, you could not have asked for a more helpful host. There when you needed her. it was a comfortable stay and the breakfast was an excellent start to your day.
- Michael (7/5): Good - The roo and location Being on the 3rd floor, there’s no lift. Also breakfast was ordinary
- Alan4711 (10/5): Exceptional - Onsen/bathroom was very clean. Staff were very friendly and helpful.
- Anthony (8/5): Very good -
- Calphy (9/5): Superb -
- Marcel (9/5): Superb -
- Peta (10/5): Exceptional -
- Madeleine (8/5): Wonderful location and lovely staff - The location is excellent, staff were lovely, comfiest futon mattresses, breakfast at the hotel was great. Not being able to shower between 3-4pm due to private bookings. Bit difficult as the only showers in the hotel are within the onsens which aren’t open during this time.
- Madeleine (10/5): Exceptional -
- Daniel (1/5): Do yourself a favour, don't stay here. - It was close to town. No one cared.
