Guest Reviews
- Lara (10/5): Beautiful traditional stay - Beautiful traditional stay, the owner was so lovely and helpful with any queries or questions. Food was amazing. Nil
- Andres (10/5): - It was an amazing place to experience a typical onsen in Japan. The hotel was comfortable, clean, and authentic japanis style. Food was great. The thermals in the hotel were amazing. The staff was super friendly and very helpful.
Highly recommend!
- E (10/5): Best ryokan experience - The staff were extremely attentive to details and made the entire stay feel very warm, welcomed, and comfortable. The dinner & breakfast were top notch and a huge spread. The room was spacious and comfortable for 2. Will definitely want to come back here again if we can! There was nothing to not like
- TAEKYU (10/5): - 청결한 시설, 맛있는 음식, 친절
- EMI (10/5): また泊まりに行きたい旅館 - お料理もお風呂も最高でした😊 なし
- Jacqueline (6/5): Disappointed that it wasn’t as good as the reviews suggested - The service was warm and friendly. The food was good and the ingredients were of good quality. The bedding was clean and the room was warm. The room and facilities had parts that were really worn down, from chipped teapots, stained curtains to grungy bath sinks, and it made the stay kind of depressing.
- Will (10/5): - The included meals were excellent and the owner was very nice and helpful.
- Keiko (8/5): -
- Peck Yeow Alan (10/5): The owner was very friendly despite not being able to speak much English. He even brought our luggages to the room. Fo - Clean and good location Nothing much
- Mareike (10/5): It was one of our highlights on our Japan trip - Everything! Friendly staff, Onsen, dinner, breakfast, manga library, our lovely room. Nothing

- Felix (10/5): Best value ryokan stay - Friendly host who greets me every time he sees me and when I am back. Amazing local dishes,, better than many of the restaurants I have been to. Nothing.
- Roos (10/5): Amazing traditional ryokan stay! - Beautiful location, really friendly owner, amazing food, comfortable bed (that they prepared when I was having dinner), nice onsen. They had explanations in English too. I dropped off my stuff earlier and when I checked in, they had already brought it up to my room, so I didn’t even have to carry it up there! Really happy with my stay here!
- Marton (10/5): Great authentic ryokan experience, excellent food - Welcoming staff, good traditional room, both private and public onsen. Excellent and beautifully presented 7 course dinner, with Hida beef as the highlight. Perfect location if you come by public transport. Do treat yourself if you are visiting Kamikochi, great ryokan experience. Some minor refreshing of bedcover might be needed. For Europeans, very hard pillow.
- Tomes (10/5): Sublime dinner and a perfect night's sleep - The staff were absolutely fantastic, very welcoming and helpful. The surrounding views were stunning, while being very close to the bus station so very accessible. The Onsen facilities were absolutely superb, and we had the best night's sleep we've had so far in Japan! Very comfortable.
And the FOOD! Utterly fantastic. It was an enormous spread of local dishes, and a really wonderful experience for both dinner and breakfast. Definitely worth a stay!
- Evan (9/5): Amazing food, great onsen and friendly staff - Great first Ryokan experience. The food was amazing and the onsens were fantastic, especially the outdoor one! The staff was friendly and for english speakers they had directions translated in English. This was a big plus for us due to us being english speaking travelers who hadn't stayed in a Ryokan before. Overall we would definitely stay here again Compared to other Ryokan the cushioning under futons was a less supportive than ideal.
Maybe we're not used to hot water, but the indoor public onsen felt too hot to be usable. (outdoor onsen was nice though while still being hot)
- Laura (10/5): Mabu san & staff do wonderful job of creating serene, traditional ryokan experience. - For a reasonable and additional charge, the dinner and the breakfast were amazing. One of us was a first time traveller to Japan and the other had previously lived in Japan; both of us thought the meals were interesting, beautiful and presented with care. The room had a great view of the surroundings and nature (covered in snow when we were there) and the amenities were well-functioning and comfortable. The layout of the room (with toilet and sink separated from main room by sliding door) was also pleasing. There are 4 onsens: 2 on the men side and 2 on the women side. There is a 4th private outdoor onsen. We would definitely stay here again. Nothing.
- Charis (8/5): Very good - The staff were friendly and nice, creating a very cosy environment.
- Alex (10/5): Nice ryokan accommodation in well-connected Hirayu Onsen - This is the first onsen accommodation I stayed in, so I have no previous experience, but I thought it was great. The staff was very attentive and made a considerable effort to ensure seamless communication between us, as I only speak some Japanese. The ryokan is only a 5-minute walk from the bus station. The room was a good size and had a big window next to the seating area. The futon was very comfortable and the staff put it in and out for the guest's convenience. Breakfast was good and varied. On top of the usual male/female separated onsen baths, there was also a private rotenburo on the first floor. One evening the hot spring water in the onsen was too hot to bathe in, so I had to wait until the following morning to use it. Still, that gave me a chance to try the free public onsen by Hirayu Folk Museum.
- Misha (10/5): Warm hospitality, incredible food, great hot springs soak - Absolutely amazing hospitality and delicious food. Cannot thank Tanaka San enough for being so warm and generous. Would love to come back here again. I wish there were a no smoking room option but everything was so clean it didn't matter.
