Guest Reviews
- Rick (10/5): - As soon as I arrived I was warmly welcomed by the owners. Their guesthouse is so clean and inviting, and I was giving a quick tour of the premises. My room was traditional style, and of course comfortable and clean. The ability for the bedroom light to be dimmed was wonderful to create a nice cozy ambience. I've been to other traditional guesthouses (roykans) around Japan in they have only had that one bright light setting.
The onsens are lovely, one indoors and one outdoors. There are clear instructions offered in English for first-timers, and a comfortable traditional robe is given to wear all around the guesthouse premises. The onsens are nice and hot - my favourite one was the outside Onsen especially in the morning of evening when the air is cold.
The meals offered are absolutely delicious and meticulously prepared. Served in a lovely dining area with views of the greenery outside through the windows.
The nearest bus station is a 2 minute walk away. Easy access to all of the activities around. I highly recommend getting the earliest bus to Kamikochi to arrive before the buses from Takayama and other places arrive. I did the same and there werent that many people at Kamikochi when I arrived, then after walking around the track loop I returned to the arrival area and it felt overwhelming and crowded with so many people. The tranquility of the place wasn't the same. So staying here at Suisensou is the perfect option to be able to access early transport.
Also after Kamikochi, there's a waterfall near the town centre (bus station). That's a nice spot too.
I can't recommend Suisensou highly enough. Great people, lovely guesthouse, clean and cosy rooms, relaxing onsens, delicious food, and I'll definitely be back the next time I'm in the Japanese Alps. I can't think of one thing.

- Harry (9/5): Excellent hosts and meals. We used translator since they didn’t speak English - Excellent building. Beautiful. Outdoor bath was closed

- Torin (10/5): - The owner was so kind, showing us everything we needed to know and awaiting our arrival each day. The location was beautiful, Fukuji-onsen is very peaceful. And the indoor onsen was divine. Thank you so much.
- Toby (10/5): Lovely scenic lodge with super friendly staff. - The views and location was amazing. Super friendly staff. The onsens were lovely too. One bug in our room but it was easily taken care of.
- Andrea (10/5): - I arrived in the town by bus on a dark and rainy night and was worried about walking and getting lost in the rain. But when I got off the bus the owner was waiting there for me and gave me a ride up to the hotel which I was incredibly grateful for! Dinner and breakfast was delicious, the room exceeded my expectations and it was lovely to soak in the Onsen after a long day. The owners are very helpful and friendly and I really enjoyed my short stay. Thank you Suisensou!

- Olivea (10/5): The scenery is beautiful and the service was exceptional. - One of the best experiences I’ve had in Japan. The location is absolutely beautiful, and the owner is so kind. He drove us to our bus stop. Gave us amazing service and overall made us feel so welcomed. The hospitality was amazing, the facility was clean and the onsen was so nice. The food was absolutely delicious. I recommend staying here.

- Sylvia (10/5): Above and beyond our expectations. - Everything was perfect. The owners were incredibly friendly and went above and beyond by picking us up at the bus station when we missed the last bus. They made us feel comfortable and were very communicative (they spoke mainly japanese, but were very good at making clear what they meant, and even printed a message in our native language to inform us about the outside onsen). The owner also told us about a little market nearby.
We didn't book breakfast, but were able to include it afterwards. It was delicious and a traditional ryokan breakfast. They made sure to tell us what everything was. The view was great.
The onsen was great! The outside onsen was unfortunately out of order due to geological activities, but the inside onsen was perfect and quiet.
Would definitely go again! Nothing really. Its an old building, so you might hear some noises, but the other guests were very quiet and respectful.
Note: its a small town and dinner options are few, so if I went again, I'd probably include dinner at the ryokan (as breakfast was so delicious!)
- KOE (10/5): -
- Thierry (10/5): excellent stay and delicious food - Comfortable room. Delicious kaiseki. Beautiful surroudings. -
L’épicerie n’a rien.
- Heather (10/5): Lovely ryokan in a stunning location - The owners are very friendly and helpful. We enjoyed the delicious meals which were all carefully prepared and beautifully served. We loved the inside and outside onsen. After a relaxing bath and a lovely dinner we slept well in our comfortable futons. This is a great traditional ryokan in a beautiful location, perfect if you are looking for an authentic Japanese experience off the beaten track.
- Daniele (7/5): Traditional Onsen Ryokan - Traditional Ryokan in a quiet and beautiful thermal location. Very nice open air onsen available for guests. The staff did not speak very good English, but they were really nice and tried their best to make our stay as comfortable as possible. For a little extra they prepared us a kaiseki dinner, absolutely delicious! The room was very clean, but we found some stink bugs in the room; not sure where they came from. And the indoor pool onsen (female) could be cleaner.
- Ya-yu (10/5): Exceptional - The owner is very helpful and kind.
- Christopher (10/5): Exceptional -
- Naomi (9/5): Superb -
- Shahar (1/5): Bugs everywhere - The room was infested with bugs, and I was forced to sleep in my car, which was a terrible experience. The hotel offered no reasonable solution to the situation

- Charles (10/5): Confortable stay - The staff were nice and helpful from the start, I ask some information before coming. The moment we arrived, the manager ask me a follow up about our previous conversation. They were very nice, and took time to explain us everything about our stay. The ryokan is a bit old but very well kept, the amenities are clean and easy to use. The beddings are very comfortable. This place is remote, but that's why you're here. We went to see Kamikochi during the day and arrived in the late afternoon. Accesible by bus. The village is quite small, a shop open early in the morning, and the izakaya down the road very good and friendly.
- Eliza (9/5): Cosy and enjoyable stay - Cosy and homey! The house had a traditional vibe and the food (dinner & breakfast) served was absolutely delicious. My family and I had second servings of rice just to finish everything. The onsen can be booked for couples to enjoy together or if you'd like a bit more privacy. There is a local foot bath that you can enjoy for free 150m away from the property. We enjoyed wearing the yukata and heading there for a dip before dinner. There is no shower room that you can use alone, as the showers are together with the onsen.
- William (10/5): Exceptional -
- David (10/5): Fantastic Ryokan experience, lovely hosts, amazing food. - We loved the authentic Japanese hospitality. Our hosts were so lovely and friendly. They made us feel welcome and comfortable. The food was outstanding - the quality, the presentation and the service of the breakfast and evening meal were impeccable. The room was spacious with plenty of storage. It was spotless! The futons were comfortable and the duvets were like clouds. The Onsen was a bonus! Nothing to not like!
- Ryan (10/5): Peaceful, wholesome authentic Japanese accommodation. - Very cute and quant ryokan, peaceful atmosphere with an authentic Japanese feel. Hosts were lovely and kind, went out of their way to help with recommendations for visits. Nothing, I will be coming back!
- Carlos (9/5): Felt like home - I truly felt at home in this onsen Ryokan. The staff was very kind and I was one of few hosts, it felt like moving around my grandmother’s house. Be warned it’s very “traditional” and even bathroom sinks are shared outside the room.
- Tarik (10/5): Exceptional - The owners were very kind. The food was great, and they allowed to have a non meet option (only fish and seafood).
