Guest Reviews
- JudgeSue (10/5): Wonderful Stay at this Historic Hotel! - My husband and I stayed one night during a weekend to attend a dinner hosted by KU Law school. From check-in to check-out, we had a wonderful experience. Our hotel room was large, clean and comfortable. Everyone was friendly and helpful. This hotel is located on Massachusetts Street within walking distance to many shops, restaurants and bars. We ended our evening after dinner at the hotel’s bar. Upon seating at the bar, our bartenders, Aaron and Angel, made our Old Fashions (my husband ordered the Million Dollar Old Fashion—it was amazing!) and easily handled the crowd that entered after we did. The next morning, we had our breakfast there (coffee is free) which was very good—service by Cora was great. So glad we stayed here and we will be back!
- Spicytwo (10/5): A memorable stay at a Historic Landmark Hotel - Wow. History. Majesty. Brilliance. My GF and I stayed 2 nights at the Eldridge in a suite. Although the room is in a different building, just down the street from the main hotel, it was a short walk and very easy to get back and forth. There is also a parking garage right next door where you can park for free. Every staff member that we met was incredibly friendly and helpful. They always smiled and greeted you in a way that made you feel as though you were a valued guest and not an inconvenience. The Extended building has 8 suites in it. We never once heard any other guests. The building was very quiet. Our room was very spacious, with a King bed, full kitchen, sitting area and an enormous bathroom. It was a bit pricey, but there was a Kansas basketball game, so every hotel in the area had higher than usual prices that weekend. Putting that aside, we will most definitely return to the Eldridge Hotel during our next visit to Lawrence.
- jessicaschilling (2/5): Disappointing in every regard - starting with no bedroom window - Online reservations not functional, so called half a dozen times over the course of an afternoon to attempt a reservation over the phone. Late check-in and desk clerk did not know of the two beds we had requested nor late check-out (“did you want the full hour?”). Would only upsell to a two-bed room so one of my party is sleeping on the floor. Bedroom has no window at all. Sitting room window blacked out and bolted shut. Extremely poor, stuffy ventilation as only source of fresh air is noisy wall a/c unit next to bed. Sink does not have plug, so not useful for shaving. Nearly lost necklace down sink. Only light in bathroom area is accessible from only a light switch around the corner. Noisy as a whole; understand why there is a white noise machine in the room.
I had lived in Lawrence years ago and had invested in this room as a splurge, as the Eldridge had been the city’s best hotel at the time. As I write this it’s nearly 2am and I’m sprawled out on a dirty floor angry at myself for having wasted so much money. So sad and disappointing.
- kathyblecha777 (6/5): Choose your room wisely! - We are currently staying at the Eldridge, and I have been thinking about our last six or visits. We kind of “ fell in love “ with the property initially. The location is wonderful, the historic lobby charming. During our first visits we stayed in spacious suites, rooms facing the pretty street. However, today and the last several times we have had an interior room. The small window faces a brick wall. The bathroom is very crowded, with hardly enough room to get in bathtub because the toilet is there. The hotel is old, part of its charm. But, be aware! From now on we’ll only stay in selected rooms.
- 772richy (10/5): Great experience - Great place to stay. Rooms are great! Employees are very friendly and helpful. Food is good. Will stay again. Can explore downtown Lawrence. Parking close by. A hotel with a rich history but still in good condition.
- natalepeggy (10/5): Great Hotel - I love this old hotel. The rooms are very spacious with a separate bedroom and sitting room. The bar is lively and the bartender is great. I stay here every time I go to Lawrence. It is located near very good restaurants and shops and I love exploring downtown Lawrence
- jacobwE1569IM (10/5): Amazing - Never received such above-and-beyond customer service in my life. The rooms were beautiful, and the hotel was full of history. The Eldridge is worth every penny with its prime location in the heart of mass street.
- IDugan2019 (6/5): Expensive - Disappointing for the price. We got the Honeymoon suite for New Years and it was just okay. Nice size room but nothing fancy, especially for the price. Being right on Mass Street is convenient. The dinner was hectic due to some staff calling out which is to be expected, but even after making reservations for the special dinner we still waited 20-30 minutes for a table. The lobby is beautiful, but there is no parking on site. Don't think we will be staying here again.
- ticosanvito (8/5): Convenient location - The bedding is good, Bathroom very small. Restaurant is good but $$. Quality of the food is good. Decor of the hotel is very good. Staff is very friendly. Parking was free near by at the 4th level of the parking lot a block away from the back of the hotel.Excellent location to explore Lawrence. Highly recommended for KU parents.
- catherinew389 (10/5): Fabulous stay for my 50 year class reunion. - The staff was professional, friendly, knowledgeable and helpful. The room was amazing as well as the view of downtown Lawrence. I was extremely happy with my stay. My only negative would be the parking which you have to feed a meter or use a parking app to pay every two hours during the day, but that is the price you pay for the spectacular ambiance of this historic facility.
- Lissa (10/5): - Loved the hotel. So many good restaurants within walking distance. Only bad part was the mattress. It was so old and soft, it was very uncomfortable.
- Kathleen (10/5): - We loved staying here! so convenient to everything! Lots of food options, across the street from Liberty Hall and awesome bands, great staff, and wonderful room!
- Roger (8/5): - It is a unique and beautiful hotel. The room was clean and comfortable.
Did not get get good sleep due to old, noisy air conditioner. Every time it would come on, it was so loud that it would wake us up.
- Tim (10/5): - We had a great stay! I really liked the "noise" machine in the bedroom. I think I'm going to have to get one of those!
- james (10/5): Highest recommendation - Beautiful hotel, excellent service
- Julianne (10/5): - Very nice, great location
- Lynn (10/5): - Nice relaxing overnight stay.
- Shawn (10/5): - Great place
- Alexis Alyce Dawn Metzger (10/5): - Great historic hotel with plenty of charm.
- Stephen (8/5): - The room was very nice - clean and comfortable. The staff was helpful and cheerful. There was no coffee available in the morning in the room or lobby, which was disappointing.
- Alexander (6/5): Split the Annex & the Main Location Entirely - So, we didn't know there was an "annex" / long-term stay area when booking on Hotels.com. I blame Hotels.com more for this. Anyways, the actual room we stayed at was 2+ blocks away from the hotel itself, there was no good parking nearby. REALLY didn't enjoy the walk back from 8th/Mass to our hotel room at 11pm from the concert.
- Neva (10/5): Will visit again! - Terrific location to enjoy local artists, restaurants, and shopping all in walking distance. Quiet area during the week. Close proximity to KU! Enjoyed the spacious room with separate bedroom from living area.
- Tunca (10/5): - I like the history and rooms
- sohrab afshari (10/5): - Great place in a lovely city with friendly people and staff.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Great place in Lawrence - Awesome place. Have been here before and the rooms and service are always top notch.
- Ann (8/5): - We enjoyed our stay at The Eldridge. The rooms are spacious and clean.
- alan (6/5): very old hotel - Very old hotel, noisy, apart from the great location, no reason to stay there.
- annmarie (10/5): - I wanted to stay on the haunted fifth floor and Front Desk Manager Brian was gladly able to accommodate me. Super friendly staff and gorgeous hotel. I have already booked another stay for this September!
- Maureen (10/5): Location! - Great location, historic building snd inviting bar/restaurant. I will be back yo stay!
- Deirdre (6/5): NO coffee in the morning in the building??? - I have stayed at Eldridge before so I had expectations it would be similar. First off they wanted to put me in an "annex" building off site. I did not even know there was such a thing so make sure you check your reservation. I ended up paying 35 more just to stay in the actual hotel. not cool. the hotel was not full so I am not sure why they did that. NO restaurant NOR coffee service in morning. NO hot water or coffee maker in room . I had to go to starbucks. Frankly i find that shocking for a 250.00 a night room. it seems like they have new cost cutting measures that make me just want to go to airbnb now. are you cutting costs so much that you can't put out a simple coffee urn and some cups??? it is the little things that you make you feel like you are appreciated and it just was missing from this experience. I wouodl say front desk staff were awesome but they don't make the coffee.
- April (10/5): - Everything was great, wish we could have stayed longer.
- Philip (10/5): -
- Verified traveler (10/5): - First time to stay here. Beautiful hotel. Nice location. Would definitely stay again.
- Jacob (10/5): - The room was so comfortable and clean, plenty of space. The staff was great. Gave us the small tour of the history of building and ghost stories. My wife and I loved the place and will be back again.
- bruce (10/5): - The hotel is beautiful and the staff is very friendly and helpful.
- Lance (2/5): - Booked thru Expedia and immediately after booking we realized the dates were incorrect. Called the front desk and they said to contact Expedia. We spent 45 minutes chatting and the virtual assistant or maybe it was a live operator but they said they would see what could be done. They tried once to contact the hotel, didn’t get an answer so I guess they just decided to decline to assist. I realize I made a mistake but mistakes happen. What would have been nice if the property offered some assistance and Expedia would do more than the bare minimum.
- Nada (10/5): - The staff was great. On site restaurant good and waiter there (Austin) very professional. Another good stay for us at this historic place.
- Darci (10/5): - Such a beautiful building in an amazing spot. The staff were all so nice and helpful. I loved the live music in the lobby the night that we were there as well. The room was very clean and spacious. We will definitely be staying there again.
- Tim Charles (10/5): - We’ve always wanted to stay here and we are glad we did!
- Nathan (10/5): - Love the history of the property as well as its close proximity to all the bars/restaurants. I highly recommend for a night out or wknd getaway
- Chase (10/5): Now my "go to" hotel in Lawrence - This is now my favorite place to stay in Lawrence. Amazing location, BEAUTIFUL hotel, and the bar was fantastic.
- Lindsay (10/5): - I love the historic details of this hotel. The room was very spacious! All of the staff were extremely helpful & super friendly. Lots of great little shops & restaurants within walking distance. Parking was a little annoying, but expected for a downtown area.
- Christopher Sean (10/5): - Great staff
- Maxine (10/5): - Love how they incorporate the history of the hotel and the area into the decor - and the mini museum in the basement.
Staff was all extremely nice and helpful too.
- kristin (4/5): Sent to the annex. - I was very disappointed to be sent to the annex when we were spending the weekend with friends and they were in the main hotel.
- michelle (8/5): - Great location, only service improvement would be to add a few heads, definitely short staffed, staff was friendly & helpful. Old hotel. Great lobby and bar.
- shankhill8848 (2/5): Avoid this restaurant - Incredibly loud- conversation impossible. Could not converse with server without raising my voice. Menu was loaded with items that had excessive ingredients. Menu was not inviting. Don’t know what else to say- requires 200 characters. This says it all
- charlie ann (8/5): Next time maybe... - The hotel itself is beautiful. My room did not have TVs that worked and the handle from the shower faucet was not attached. When I tried calling down to the front desk several times, no one ever answered. I would love to stay here again, and hopefully receive a functional room.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Beautiful hotel. - Parking was not easy or available. Our room started off at 77 degrees at 4 pm. and after turning thermo to 66, in the morning the next day it was only 72 degrees.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - No valet parking so you have to find your own place to park which is not close on a Saturday evening
- Verified traveler (10/5): - We stayed in the annex, which was away from the main facility. So this was a bit unique. Parking was better near the annex than the main hotel. The room was very nice and also quite roomy.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Beautiful hotel and very helpful, friendly, polite staff.
- Keith (10/5): LOVE THIS HOTEL!!! A+++ - Overall the place is great! Comfortable beds, large open rooms, great water pressure and air-condition worked great! Def stay again when in Lawrence. Really close to everything... food and bars (Starbucks on corner). The lady at front desk tried to double charge me for the room because she didn't see the Hotels.com was already paid. That's the only negative from the 3 day say but it was minor.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Parking is very hard to find around the hotel. Restaurant is excellent
- Jordan (10/5): Eldridge - Fun staff, knew and shared the history of the building!
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Ups: ancestors worked for Col Eldridge in 1854 and survived raids in 1856 and 1863. Love hotel.
Downer: Lack of parking.
- David (8/5): - Great stay- disappointed they had no breakfast. Had to go someplace else. It was fine. Thx
- Rodney (10/5): - Nice clean room. Quiet and comfortable stay for 3 days. Staying again
- Verified traveler (10/5): - They make you feel right at home. family feeling.they were on a whole new level of perfection
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Loved the ambiance of the hotel. The room was nice and the bed was comfortable. We had an issue with our toilet not flushing properly, but that was minor. I would definitely stay there again.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - I went for a Mom's night away. The room was more spacious than a traditional room. I had a beautiful view for the sunrise over the Kansas plains plus a view of Mass street. Tons of places to eat and shop in walking distance.
No coffee pot in room but they brought me one per my request.
TV's in both the sitting area and bed area.
It was a great place for this mama to get away and rest and do some writing.
Since it is a busier area the outside lights did come in at night and it was noisy at times, but a white noise machine was provided in the room so that was very helpful.
I will be staying here again.
- cordryka (6/5): Great venue, disappointing stay - The location of this hotel can't be beat and the ambience afforded by staying in a historic place is always lovely, however, for the amount of money charged for a stay, I would expect the service and amenities to be impeccable. Our rooms were not cleaned thoroughly (towel from previous occupant left in bathroom), lighting is poor, room is too bright at night, beds are not terribly comfortable, and both the plumbing and room temperature regulation are not terribly consistent. Despite reservations made for brunch, we were made to wait 30 minutes for a table. Service can be good (our waitstaffs at both the restaurant and bar were very good), and the food at the hotel is very good and priced well. Acoustics are a problem in both the restaurant and bar and conversations are difficult to maintain without feeling as if you are yelling. We have stayed at both The Eldridge and its sister property The Oread on occasion and have found both to be disappointing for the amount of money paid. Great places with great potential, but needing to be improved if we were to consider staying at either place again.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - This is a beautiful building with spacious rooms. If you are looking for old class charm and a great location, this is the one!
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Excellent and pleasant service. Front desk personnel took care of all requests expediently.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - The hotel is really nice, but there is NO parking, we did not have hot water or heat the first night, so at midnight they offered to move us. They installed a new heater the next day which was nice but SUPER early - The staff was great though
- Verified traveler (8/5): Great location, low quality service. - The initial check-in took awhile because there was no one at the front desk which I would expect late at night but it was 6PM. I stood at the counter for 5+ minutes before anyone helped me. The location is great in downtown Lawrence but with no valet you have to figure out parking on your own (do either park at meters on the street or the 2-hour lots (if there are spots), and the hotel doesn't help accommodate they just tell you options. The towels are are pretty cheap and old feeling not as comfortable for what you pay for the hotel.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - This historic property is wonderful. Sitting room in the lobby and antique game table gave us a chance to have a little Happy Hour, despite COViD. Warm atmosphere, whilst outside was frozen with negative 0 temps. Lovely
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Parking is issue as there are no designated parking.
- Jessica (10/5): - It’s a beautiful old building with a neat history. Mass Street is a great location if you want good food or nice bar to hang in, even with Covid restrictions. The Eldridge has a martini bar, a group of four of us had enjoyed appetizers and drinks for a few hours. The staff was very accommodating and friendly. Our room was clean with a comfortable bed and couch. The bathrooms were very small but it did not affect our stay in a negative way at all.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Perfect location on Mass St and a great bar. Room was clean and big
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Great location, 1925 built hotel is in perfect condition.
- Joe (6/5): - Parking issues!
- Hector (10/5): - It was a ghostly haunted hotel but on the night that I was there I didn't experience any paranormal activity. Great really old comfortable settings.
- Kim (6/5): - Nothing the toilet in our room didn’t work, the elevator broke down, and horrible service
- 302jacem (6/5): Needs improvement - I stay at the Eldridge Hotel in Lawrence every year. I have noticed a decline in services on my recent visits. There is no more coffee in the lobby in the morning and their bar closes by 9 each night. I still like staying there because the front desk employees are very friendly and the rooms are very comfortable.
I also need to mention an issue at the Jayhawker bar. The night I had a drink there, I saw that one of the bartenders had a mask on with the words “black lives matter” on it. That is not the place to display a political message. Especially about a group that is extremely offensive and associated with violence. Management needs to change this policy immediately and ban employees from displaying this offensive material. It’s unprofessional and irresponsible.
- Natalie (6/5): - Rooms were pretty outdated. Our room had an old leather couch that was peeling. We also were moved to a different room twice. The first time our room hadn't been cleaned. The second time there was not an explanation given. This was pretty disappointing. I am an alum of KU and was looking forward to showing off The Eldridge and Mass St to my fiance.
- Scott (10/5): Great hotel in an even better location! - The staff at the hotel is very welcoming and the hotel is absolutely beautiful. And, right on Mass Street!
- Verified traveler (8/5): Not What It Once Was - The Eldridge is full of charm and beauty. We love staying in historic hotels, however, we were very disappointed in the care of the hotel. We stayed at the Extended, a block away from the main hotel and while the room was beautiful, it had not been dusted in quite sometime. The walls showed wear and tear and the spa shower heads were limed up and did not work properly. Our phone did not work, so to reach the front desk, we had to use our cell phones. The staff did not seem very knowledgeable, and no one offered to help us with our luggage (remember we were a block away).
All in All our stay was pleasant, but the hotel needs a lot of work to live up to its stellar reputation.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Great Hotel - Beautiful hotel and the rooms at tje extended are awesome!
- Kendal (8/5): My Eldridge stay - Great room in a historic hotel. A lot of dining options close by but there’s also the restaurant in the hotel. It has great food and great drinks.
- Lj (10/5): - Very nice ans secluded. Complete privacy. Enjoyed area and check in
- micstebou (6/5): They are in transition. - This is a wonderful and historic hotel in downtown Lawrence. The history of the place is amazing.
The good: The location is convenient in downtown Lawrence. The rooms are large with hisotirc features and modern upgrades. A nice central lobby area to rest. The staff is overall friendly and helpful. There is an on site restaurant, but we did not eat there.
The not so good: It is hard to tell where the entrance is. There is a small drive up area on the side of the hotel, not well marked, no awning. If you use this entrance they you have to carry your bags up a flight of stairs to the lobby to check in. They have one luggage cart, you have to take that out the front door, around the corner to the side entrance to use it. The fornt entrance has a few metered parking spaces there, always full. The large bar was not open, they did not have a liquor license. The advertising on line and even in the hotel suggest otherwise. The restaurant was sparesly used, it was unclear what state of full service they were geared for.
They have a valet service for a reasonable fee. The cars are kept some distance off though, so you have to wait a while. One morning there were 6 guests ahead of us waiting for their cars. Since they seemed to be in a remodel and service tranition, the stafff seemed unclear at times how things worked there too.
A nice place to stay in Lawrence, potentially much better after they are through the transition and everything is up and running,
- maleko (10/5): - Very nice restoration, comfortable bed, good location.
- Kay (10/5): - As a historian, I loved this historic hotel. The room was spacious and beautiful. I loved having a ceiling fun. Everything was great! The people were great! Thanks
- Nancy (10/5): - The hotel is beautiful and clean. The restaurant inside is fantastic and everyone is extremely nice and helpful.
- GWCarlson (8/5): Excellent location, but some minor gripes - We stayed here last night. It’s a charming historic hotel in the midst of Lawrence’s equally charming shopping/restaurant district.
The staff were friendly and met expectations. The room was clean and fairly spacious. We had just three pretty minor gripes.
1. No in-room coffeemaker. And the lobby coffee isn’t available until 6:30am. The desk clerk was kind enough to direct me to the Starbucks across the street, where I was greeted by a charming barista.
2. We prefer to stay in “historic” hotels mostly to avoid those awful individual exterior-wall heating/ac units so prevalent in newer properties. We weren’t disappointed in that regard. However, the heater runs so warm that the room quickly overheats.
3. The shower. A combination of low pressure and lukewarm water was disappointing.
Even considering the above, we would likely stay there again.
- SCOTT (10/5): Enjoyable place to stay. - Amazing place to stay. Get bored go shopping along the strip of stores. Very good food in they're restaurant!
- Greatawesome (8/5): Loved the history - This hotel is rich in history as the front desk person described to us. The hotel lobby was inviting and you felt like you had stepped back in time. From making the reservations and checking in and out and the staff was the utmost friendliness I have ever encountered. The room was nice and the bed was comfortable. The only thing we did not care about was the fact there are no curtains. Only blinds. I wished they had some black-out curtains. Not sure if it was because we went during the Christmas time and the downtown lights were so pretty, they shined bright enough the room wasn't very dark. Other than that, we would stay again.
- Lucy (8/5): - We love the Eldridge. The only complaint was the coffee bar had no to go coffee cups and the front desk had no idea where they were. We were driving to the airport so that was disappointing.
- Ronald (10/5): - The Eldridge is a beautiful property. The beds were dreamy, we stayed in room 401 which is a suite and has a large sitting room. Perfect for hosting friends family before/after graduation at KU.
- Passport48895 (10/5): The place to stay in Lawrence! - I love staying at the Eldridge. This is a wonderful historical hotel conveniently located in the heart of Lawrence with access to restaurants and shiops. The rooms are spacious and well appointed .The staff is always friendly and extremely helpful.
- ALLANDREWS (10/5): Dinner at the Eldridge Dinning Room. - I enjoyed a Maricela Chicken Dinner and my beautiful wife enjoyed a Crab Cake Dinner. The environment and service was OUTSTANDING. The historic environment adds to the appreciation of the outstanding preparation and presentation of the dinners. The taste and long tender carrots 🥕 were a surprise and very tasty. TOTALLY RECOMMEND
- racheldQ9368ZY (8/5): Historic Hotel in perfect location, with great staff- worth the minor negatives - This historic hotel is beautiful and cared for. First of all, the front desk staff and sales staff are very friendly, helpful, and professional. And, it’s in the best location, right in the heart of downtown Lawrence, on the corner of Mass Street & 7th Street.
The lobby bathrooms are renovated to perfection. If only the sleeping rooms had the same treatment, in design. Unfortunately, the rooms are tired - but because the selection of furniture, fixtures, colors, and decor are dated and low grade - not because they are old.
We were in a large suite, but some of the design choices were off - like a very large bathroom counter area, with only one sink and a very long kitchenette counter, with a small sink and tiny fridge, leaving a lot of wasted space below.
There’s no overhead light in the living room and even with all the lamps on, it still wasn’t bright enough.
Needs more outlets designated for the guests (i.e. not lamps, clock radio, and noise machine).
There’s a large TV in the LR and the BR.
Overall, I would recommend this hotel.
- Biztraveler11 (10/5): We stayed in Haunted Room 506! Great Location downtown. - Location, Location, Location! Great view of downtown Lawrence and we could even see the Veteran's Parade from our room. The Saturday night band in the lobby was fun with comfortable relaxed seating. The lobby bar and restaurant we outstanding as well and all this made for a great weekend visit. After we arrived home and were searching about the hotel online, we found out we stayed in the room haunted by Col. Eldridge himself, but I guess we were sleeping so well in the comfortable and nicely appointed room, that we didn't even notice if he visited us??
- Jeff (8/5): The Eldridge - Overall this is a great hotel! A lot of history and a great location. The parking is not ideal, or at least clear on where it is ok to park that is not valet or 2 hour short term. The only other thing was the water pressure was not very strong at all in the shower. We were on the 5th floor in a very old building so I will give that my expectations may be too high... We enjoyed the stay and learning about the hotel. I would definitely stay there again.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - I always love staying at the Eldridge. Comfortable hotel; great location downtown. Would be lovely if they would put coffee pots in the room.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Center of all we wanted to do. Staff wonderful, always greeted, asked if there was anything we needed .
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Absolutely beautiful hotel. Bed was incredibly comfortable and room was so relaxing and welcoming.
BUT it blows my mind that there are no curtains or black out blinds of any sort. 2nd floor facing Massachusetts St and the street lights shine through. So so bright.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - no one answered reservation line, no help unloading car,
furniture in room worn, windows don’t open, no blackout shades
- Puki (8/5): - Hotel is in a wonderful location--downtown, close to unique shops and great restaurants, friendly/helpful staff...
