Guest Reviews
- Justin (10/5): - We got back from a cruise and needed a place to stay before a midnight flight that night. Staff here were awesome and very helpful. We were able to drop our bags in the morning so we could explore the area. Was nice to rest a few hours and take a shower before our flight. Conveniently located across the street from the cruise ship and a quick taxi ride to airport. There aren’t any frills as a hostel, but clean, quiet, and safe. Would highly recommend as the staff were really nice and helpful!
- Graciela (10/5): - This is a great location to get to the Ferry…the Breakfast is wonderful. Most of the Staff is very good. The bedroom and all is clean and good. I had a problem with my bed it seems like there are wires out and when I got up I got hurt in my head from the lower bed… this was my third night there and this is the first time it happens… they need to check on this… I also had a problem with a Staff Member… sometime in the future I will let them know… other than that is very good
- Graciela (8/5): - This is my second time here
The attendanr in the evening was excellent and this is good
The attendant in the morning was terrible... unhelpful a lier
Bad... bad for the hostel
- Maalav (10/5): - Very good and clean place for the price. Extremely friendly staff and service.
- Jacques (10/5): - Very clean room, well located. Showers and bathrooms were very clean too. Staff was very nice. The only thing is that the room was a bit noisy. But I blame the hostel guests more than the hostel itself for this as some came in speaking quite loud…. But that is kind of usual in hostel. Overall, I would recommend this place.
- Arnold (8/5): - The check-in process was quick and convenient with staff on site to assist and provide with information. The convenience of having the store and staff available 24 hours is an extra bonus. The room was satisfactory for our overnight stay, and the location is excellent for walking to nearby restaurants, stores, ATM machines and local sites.
- Graciela (10/5): - The rooms are small... and the Mahana has place bunkers... I am in a women s one which for me... an older person is better... the beds are bunkers well built strong and with curtains of black material so each person can close it not to have light from others... also this reminds others to be kind and considerate to others... it has lockers without keys... ok each person can put things with locks in their bags... the under the bed space is tall so the suitcases fit... and each bed has a charger plug and a small light to have light in the bed... for people who have to get up at night and to leave in the dark.
The bedding is neat and clean. The kitchen is huge and clean. All in light beautiful colors and art painted in the walls and decorated with apple green and white colors... very nice... toilet paper... soap in all bathrooms... I am up late and there is an attendant cleaning and doing guard in the place... i am very impressed.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Highly Recommend - Excellent stay again.
- Jacqueline (6/5): - Summary: okay stay. Not perfect, but I would stay again. 3.5-4/5 stars
Positives
- air conditioning in room
- fridge/kitchen
- surprisingly, despite there being only 6 showers for the entire hostel, I never had to wait
- location: ten minutes or less to ferry
- privacy curtains on beds
- enough clearance under bunks to keep your suitcase
- quiet--not a party hostel
- breakfast provided: bread, cheese, oranges, spreads, coffee/tea
- reality clean, though I think the bathrooms could use a clean
- was able to leave my bags for a few hours and they even let me take a shower before heading to airport
Needs Improvement:
- wifi range a bit spotty and slow at times; need more bandwidth (or whatever the term is) so that it's faster. Also needed to be re-set at times
- lockers in women's dorm dont actually lock
- remotes for the A/C should not be kept in the room. The hostel should agree to a set temperature and keep it there. I stayed here twice and both times there was disagreements between dorm mates about what the temperature should be set at
- need a mirror in the dorm
- no windows in female dorm
- breakfast ends a bit early @ 08:30
- I needed a computer to check-in for my flight, as my phone died. Hostel staff said they were not allowed to assist, even when I proposed they stand there and watch me input my info.
- one of the bathrooms has no soap dispenser
- no hot water in kitchen. This is a bit concerning in terms of sanitizing shared dishes and cutlery.
- WEERAPHAN (2/5): - $100 without window, no sheets, and cockroach around ,very dirty, smells bad
- Steven (10/5): - The property was excellent overall and offered excellent value. The one thing I did not like was the indigent people hanging out right outside the property who were smelly, smoked and sometimes made bad comments. They weren't too bad but they should not have been there.
- M (2/5): No internet, noisy and cockroaches - We booked this place for one night before leaving at midnight to fly out of Tahiti. The staff were friendly and we were happy when checked in. The location is really good.
You have to take shoes off in the hostel, including the toilet which can wet your socks (possibly water, likely pee on the floor). Whenever I needed internet, it wasn't there. It hardly exists whether you're in the room or lounge. (Their excuse was that they were full but it's still not okay.)
We checked in and we closed the window which opens to the hallway. When we came back a couple of hours later, the window was open for some reason. We also saw a couple of cockroaches crawling on the bed. We only used the room to store luggage during the day and have a wee snooze before our flight but it barely met the expectation, with cockroaches on bed and almost no internet. I wouldn't be able to sleep multiple nights. It was good that towels were provided but they smelled. I rarely give poor reviews but it was not a pleasant experience staying here.
- Shannon (8/5): - I had a fun trip, the staff was very nice. the men that stayed I was not a big fan of, and I don't like sharing bathrooms or showers with me. those both stunk like mens ass that was very gross. the female dorm was great the girls were nice and respectful.
- bryan (10/5): Great before a late night flight - We used this as a place to stay before out late flight out of Tahiti. It worked perfectly. We had a nice bed to rest on, a safe place to store our things while we explored, and a good bathroom to clean up in before our flight. I would certainly book here again for this same purpose.
- Jasmine (8/5): - Great location close to the harbor and was a good stay for a night.
- Gladys (10/5): - Very helpful staff. Super central location. Walking distance from the Ferry to go to Moorea and 1
Minutes walk from the Market and all the shop.
Common area are spotless.
- Matt (6/5): Adequate crash pad for a night - this is a fine, bare-bones hostel in a good location. The main problem is zero sound insulation. Any noise in the room next to us sounded like it was happening in our room, so it was hard to sleep. Harsh fluorescent lighting. The one window in our room opened into the hallway where the main ceiling light shined right in our eyes in bed, and we couldn't cover it because there was no curtain.
- Kasandra (10/5): - Surprisingly surprised with how clean and how quiet it was. I liked my stay
- Lance (10/5): Great base for exploring the Coromandel Peninsula - Very friendly welcome and roomy accommodations.
- Esther (8/5): Great overnight after a long flight - The staff were wonderful. The location for visiting Papeete was first rate. The accommodation was clean and the breakfast simple but ample.
- Rei (4/5): - No hair dryer!!! Stinky towel. Terrible breakfast (only baguettes and jam). No shuttle from/to airport. There are other facilities that provide cleaner and cheaper accommodation WITH free airport shuttles.
- Joan (10/5): Clean hostel. - I stayed here as a day room before a late night flight. It’s convenient for the things I like to do in Papeete. Le Marche and food trucks. I’m too old for top bunks so only used room to store my things! They did try to accommodate my request for a low bunk.
- Alex (10/5): - It’s cool ok overall … fun!
- Najib (8/5): - Nice location very convenient and clean
- Briana (8/5): - Clean and simple. Great location for easy access to ferry & city
- Felix (10/5): Friendly and clean hostel - Very convenient, neat and clean for a hostel plus very friendly staff, super centrally located. Very good deal, good value for your money.
- Megan (8/5): Excellent location - Excellent location and very friendly staff. The rooms were small but adequate. Could be cleaner, but for thr price can't complain. The bed was extremely hard/firm so be prepared.
- Verified traveler (4/5): - They promised breakfast. There was none. Just a hunk of hard bread.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Clean. Central. Very nice staff. Just try to find anything in that price range in French Polynesia...
- Verified traveler (10/5): Good hostel in the heart of Papette - This hostel is very clean, secure, comfortable, with air condition excellent for good night of sleep, very helpful staff and friendly (t will organized hey, located at 2 blocks of the Papeete Market and 1 block of the port if you are taking a cruise and roulettes, within walking distance to attractions. The location is very good and it is the only hostel in downtown.
- Tracy (10/5): - Very clean. Stayed in a private room. Walk to ferry terminal. not much of a breakfast but it was something! Bread/jam/peanut butter. Lock door that access rooms. Bank ATM right across the street.
Difficult to carry heavy suitcases up large flight of stairs.
- sabine (10/5): - Great location, very nice staff, clean and welcoming.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Courteous staff, clean facilities around the property, close to amenities, in the downtown. Highly recommend and will come back here when next I visit Tahiti.
- André (10/5): - Nice place to stay , very well looked after clean, not too packed, simple but good breakfast and very helpful and friendly staff. Stayed 2 nights only as not much to do in Papeete but highly recommended.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - Wifi is terrible.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - We checked in at 6:00 am. They got us to our tiny room quickly. Breakfast was bread and coffee. Lovely paintings all over the walls. Perfect location for us to walk to our cruise ship.
- Leslie (8/5): Good for budget and convenience - Very convenient to waterfront and downtown marketplace. Room was very spartan, no window, but simple and clean. Front desk was very friendly and accommodating. We would return for convenience and affordability. Shuttle to airport was fairly priced (divided among travelers) and on time which we appreciated.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - It was a first time adventure in a place like this. It was a great surprise. We were basically using this lodge for cleaning up after an 8 hour safari excursion across Tahiti, and before flying back to Orlando, FL later in the evening. The restroom/shower was shared, but the double room was private. The restroom/shower did have privacy, just not attached to room, but nearby. Everyone, including other guests were very respectable! Would definitely stay again, maybe even sleep! A/C worked excellent in the room, and the price was right!
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Very very clean. Nice place to stay. Beyond what I expected for the price.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - Very good location. Could be cleaner. Air conditioner broke in our room and light didn't work. Bathrooms were often dirty.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Excellent location, very clean. pleasant and helpful staff, wonderful quotes about travel on the hallway walls!
- Verified traveler (10/5): - This is a great budget place to stay at in Papeete. It is very close to the ferry terminal(less than 300 yards) and close to other sites. This hostel type place is clean, safe, and very comfortable inside. There is a nice dinning/common room with kitchen. The staff were friendly and helpful as well. I really liked this place.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Location, clean, friendly staff. Showers and bathroom could need cleaning more often. However, it was clean enough. Bunkbeds comfortable and towels and bedding provided clean.
- Ann (8/5): Serendipity! - I landed in Tahiti at 2100 with no hotels available under $325 per night. The Mahana Hostel had one bed left - a 6 woman dorm, upper bunk, $28 per night. I hadn’t stayed in a hostel for 35 years - and thought this one was great! It’s clean, air conditioned, quiet and right across the street from the ferry building. Wifi worked well and the staff (especially Maui) was awesome. As a result I stayed 2 more nights, the last one in a bottom bunk. My only complaint is the breakfast - it’s just bread & coffee. Other options would be nice.....fruit, cheese,
- Sarah (4/5): - A superb location and clean facilities were sadly completely overshadowed by paper thin walls and no sound insulation at all. Having a private room was no protection, we heard everyone's footsteps in the night and the next room turning in bed! If you need to sleep at night, take industrial strength earplugs, or simply avoid this place.
- Mark (8/5): Basic Stay - Close to ferry - Stayed here after a late flight and to take an early ferry to Mo’orea. Accommodation is basic but met our needs, a bed to sleep on. Complimentary breakfast with powdered coffee, bread, butter & jams. We were able to walk over to the ferry the next morning.
- George (10/5): - Fantastic, close to everything, super clean, quiet and secure.
- John (8/5): - Great downtown location, right across the street from the nightly collection of food trucks. Staff was very friendly although some had limited English. One needs to bring ones own shampoo, soap, towel, and lock for the room lockers.
- Stu (10/5): - Awesome cheap and convenient staff booked a cab for me that arrived at 5am and was a good price
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Good hostel with normal branfast, a bit expensive like all in Polinesia!
- Karolina (8/5): Great central location - Very helpful staff that goes above and beyond with customer service. Great location.
- Andreas C (10/5): Good value for price - Staff are very friendly and helpful. Facility is clean and everything works. I can recommend it as a good place in a great location, offering good service for a reasonable price, which is rare in Tahiti.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Hostel in great location. Clean. Staff tries to be very helpful. Friendly atmosphere. Definitely recommend it.
- Shona (8/5): Great budget stay in Papeete - Check in was helpful and efficient at 2am! Room was small but all we needed. Air conditioning was great, but the bed was uncomfortable. Very central location for ferry/ town
- Verified traveler (10/5): Nice hotel. Close to everything you want to see. - It’s close to all the places I wanted to see. Service was excellent. Early checked in since the room was ready. Sold me a charger since I forgot my EU plug adaptor for an affordable price. Breakfast was awesome coffee was good. Guava and magi preserve were authentic. Bars to go to at night. Close to pier for a quick trip to Moorea. Very helpful staff.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - very nice hostel in downtown
- Vicky (8/5): - This place is located in the center of Papeete, its super convenient location. Hotel is clean and bed is comfy. Staff are friendly and helpful.
- Doug (10/5): - Great location in Papeete, good value. Staff was very helpful.
- Verified traveler (6/5): Central and friendly - The staff are so helpful, the overall facilities are newish. The downside are shared toilets and showers and all that implies. Showers were cold and handheld. Breakfast is bagettes, donuts, jams and coffee. Bed was basic, room windowless but the aircon was great. Overall pleased for pricerange.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - very clean, good wifi, friendly staff, walking distance to supermarket, bus stops and the ferry terminal
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Easy access to papeete, great location.
Modern facility, clean and comfortable.
- Juan (8/5): Price and locations - The tho Tel is in the heart of PPT , receptionist are very nice . I was surprise how clean it is for a Hostel .
Room was a little warm though even with A/C on .
- Carri (8/5): Comfortable, basic, great value - A bit hard to find with construction of the Main Street through Papeete. It is passcode controlled which we weren’t aware but a local man outside of the hostel was a great help calling for entrance! It is clean, nicely organized for a hostel, the a/c is very quiet, the bed was comfortable. Breakfast was coffee or tea, with real milk cream dehydrated, powdered chocolate milk, baguettes, Skippy peanut butter, strawberry, mango, vanilla banana, guava jams. Available microwave, kettle, fridge. List of courtesies that everyone should follow whether at home or away. Four toilets and six showers, local manoi oil shampoo and soap provided with one bath towel for each person. Rooms are basic and comfortable.
- Max (8/5): Good hostel - keep your expectations right - Good hostel, 5 min walk from the port area. Clean and comfortable. Keep yoir expectations right, it is a hostel, not a hotel. Very quiet, nobody talks, all visitors are in their smartphones, it is an iPhone era now. No towels provided, you need to pay non refundable 5 USD for one. Taxi from airport is 20 USD, does not look to be other options. Good hostel for a overnight stay.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Close to cruise ship, security is good.
Staffs help to carry luggage up and down stairs.
No elevator.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Once found it was a home away from home. - Induction stove top, sharp knives, great Internet connection and vibe.
- Adventura (8/5): Wonderful hostel except for the beds - The hostel is very clean and it is in an excellent location. It is 2 minute walk to Tahiti market and 5 minute walk to the ferry terminal. Everything is excellent except for the bunk beds. The bunk beds are a little bit too old. If the someone tosses, the whole bunk bed shakes.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Very good for the day roombefore the flight. Hotel staff was excellent
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Very convenient location, clean rooms, friendly staff. Great for those on a budget.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Great place! - Very clean, comfortable and an amazing staff.
We will definitely be back!
- Verified traveler (6/5): basic ok not the best area - Offered airport transfers online no one at the airport and no one to take me back - not the best area but ok
- Diana (10/5): Good alternative. - Everything new and nice people. I recommend.
- Anne (10/5): The best hostel experience I've ever had. - Very friendly and accommodating staff. I was able to leave my luggage with them and use their facilities after checkout time. They even arranged a taxi to the airport in the evening for a discounted rate. Other people staying at the hostel were respectful of others and kind. The shared room was clean as well as the bathroom and kitchen facilities. The central location could not have been better for access to the market, ferry station, shopping center and bus access.
- Dirk (10/5): An oasis.... - ... in an otherwise slightly challenged town (accomodation wise).... affordable and nice with friendly staff. Wifi reliable, premises are clean and rooms are not effected by street noise.
