Guest Reviews
- Alex (10/5): - Lovely wee hostel, felt very welcomed by Nao and his staff! Got given some great food recommendations, and is a nice place to explore the city.
- KWAN (9/5): Valuable and nice staff! - The staff was very nice and shared very useful information for my trip :) The bed is a bit hard, but reasonable for its price.

- Tomasz (7/5): Między Zenkōji a Matsumoto - Personel - dostałem miałem wsparcie w odnalezieniu hostelu. Skopiowany z booking.com adres do map Google doprowadził mnie w zupełnie inne miejsce.
Zaplecze kuchenne i lobby. Obiekt w stylu dekadenckim z tendencją do abnegacji.

- Mallory (10/5): Nice little winter stay in Nagano - A lovely old home in a nice little town. I only stayed a few nights at Dot but was very pleased with my time there. (It snowed just enough to make it extra fun!) The house is beautiful if you appreciate old architecture. It's up near a shrine with little stores and snack places so a good place to wonder about. Surprisingly warm with just a few heaters scattered all over. You are given a towel for the shower which is nice. Only one washer and no dryer so keep that in mind for winter times.
The staff was friendly and offered local recommendations. (Deff go up the street to the hand made soba place and the brewery down a few blocks!) Despite the walls being thin and having open rafters, I didn't feel it was all too noisy; the only thing would be is the rooms are actually very quiet so you may hear every movement and sniffle form your dorm-mates but nothing unbearable. Beds were very comfy and especially that big comforter. WiFi was god but could be weak in your bunk. Only one bathroom and shower but didn't have to fight others to use it. Plenty of hot water. Kitchen was well stocked with cups, plates, silverware, etc. There was a little burner, microwave and a kettle.
Common room had good space for hang out and a big book selection to thumb through. Pretty simple to get to and around town by the local buses. I would love to stay there again when I get the chance! No much honestly, but yes the stairs are very steep so will be difficult for those with mobility issues! But rather fun once you got used to them.
- Hanna (7/5): - Great location and cozy environment. As with any hostel, noise levels depend on the other guests staying with you.

- Aravindan (7/5): - Staff are friendly I dont feel comfortabke by pillow.

- Lisa (9/5): Charming stay in Nagano. - A great location in Nagano with very friendly and helpful hosts. An old style building with plenty of charm. I didn’t mind the steep wooden stairs but some might find them challenging. Free tea and coffee. The mattress was a bit thin and despite the very cosy duvet I was a little cold now and again, however the weather did have a cold snap during my visit.
- goku (9/5): -
- Thomas (7/5): An enjoyable stay - Good location for Nagano Very steep stairs going up to dorms. Don’t stay here if you have mobility issues

- Nika (7/5): -
- Jarrah (9/5): Lovely place, with great location - Great location, had access to a washing machine for cheap and friendly host.
- Antony (9/5): -
- Anna (10/5): Exceptional - The host was really kind and we could leave our baggage there after checkout.
- Kevin (10/5): Amazing hostel, super location, and very friendly staff. - Everything was great! We stayed two nights. We had a car so the slight distance to the station wasn't a problem for us. And there was public parking in the same street that cost only ¥600 per day.
The host was super friendly, the hostel is built in a 100 year old house and has a lot of charm. We met various other guests and one of the nights stayed all up until late sharing stories of our travels and talking. Super great.
The location is also superb. Close to Zenkoji temple and the Museum. It also has a bus stop close by. Nothing!
- Grace (8/5): Very good -
- Daniel (10/5): Exceptional - Great location, great staff, comfortable beds, well equipped kitchen. I couldn’t have asked for more.
- Puinyuk (9/5): Superb -
- Nath (10/5): Exceptional -
- Kristin (7/5): Good -
- Dora (8/5): Very good - The hostel itself is a beautiful Japanese house, I really enjoyed staying here. It's super close to the Zenkoji temple, which is a convenient location to other sights / kombini nearby. Staff are really friendly and helpful. The mattress is super thin, which made it really hard to sleep comfortably.
- Leilani (10/5): Fantastic - The hostel is so cute and cosy and also super clean - I really enjoyed my stay
There are limited bathroom facilities but I never had a problem with this. My only issue was an exit light shining in my eyes at night but otherwise it was lovely!
- Jonah (8/5): Good value for money, get what you pay for - Staff were lovely, very welcoming, helpful. Generally probably pretty good value for money Bed pretty uncomfortable, obviously there is a standard of solid bed, good for your back etc. but tbh even by Japanese standard could do with a bit more padding. Also you are sharing a single shower and single toilet between 12? Maybe 14 people? Not the end of the world but means there's a bit of a wait sometimes
- Ray (10/5): Best experience of old house - A typical old house case, nice wood, locations is perfect for morning walk or evening walk around the best area
- Ben (10/5): Exceptional - The host.
Baggage possible to leave there after check-out
- Will (10/5): Exceptional - Owner was really nice and helpful, location is very central and cozy.
- Yik (9/5): Superb - A little far from nagano station, but right next to zenkoji temple - convenient to view the morning ceremony. Has full kitchen and fridge. Had a lovely stay here The stairs to the rooms are a bit steep, warning for those with mobility issues
- Leo (10/5): Nicest Owner. Stay here if in Nagano! - Very clean, has everything you need.
- Yoko (10/5): Exceptional -
- Andrew (7/5): Decent hotel - Close to Zenkoji temple and transit I found the bed was a little uncomfortable
- Vladimir (9/5): Superb -
- Kimmo (8/5): Very good -
- Ichen (10/5): I will definitely visit Nagano again and stay here:) - Great location if you are going to visit Zenkoji temple and Nagano museums. The staff Hara san is very helpful to advise nice restaurants and tourist spots near Nagano. Nope
- Marco (9/5): Superb -
- Daphne (6/5): OK for heavy sleepers - Well located near the temple & the center
Very nice host with good recommendations
Fairly social - but up to you to make it so
Nice old traditional house
Access to an equipped kitchen Incredibly noisy from the road & you could feel your bed shake when buses pass by as of 6am
Only one shower - if the house is full could be an issue
- Jlee91 (10/5): Exceptional -
- Jlee91 (10/5): Exceptional -
- Jlee91 (10/5): Exceptional - Located on a quiet side street near Zenkoji Temple with great access to amenities and transportation. Many food and coffee/breakfast options nearby, and Nao is a great host and quick to recommend stuff in the area.
- Koki (10/5): Exceptional -
- Blaz (9/5): Superb -
- Jacqueline (8/5): Good value, simple, clean and comfortable accommodation in an excellent location. - Comfortable and clean rooms, good kitchen facilities and a spacious shared sitting area. I was surprised that there was only one toilet. It wasn't a problem because the hostel wasn't full, but if there were many people, it could be awkward.
- Nicholas (10/5): Good place to stay in Nagano. - Good hostel, very comfortable and has everything you need. Kitchen is great, beds were comfortable and spacious. Location is great too in the upper part of town. Would stay here again! Nothing!
- Javier (8/5): Very good - Traditional japanese house, nice staff, good price Just one toilet and one shower. Location is good (next to the main temple) but i find more convenient being closer to the station
- Alice (7/5): Good -
- Rawat (8/5): Overall, I really like the stay. - It was clean and many amenities were provided and I like how everyone was very considerate and didn’t make much noise. And the place is even close to bus stand and zenkoji temple. Only thing I didn’t like about it would be that I already filled my arrival time in booking.com but they didn’t know about it, I don’t know if it was the fault of the hotel for not checking or from booking.com side. I hope they would communicate prior to their customers and they could arrange some alternative for their early arrival, would be really helpful.
- Adrian (9/5): Great traditional feel - Nice traditional feel in a quiet area. I was only able to stay one night, but I will definetly go back if I have the chance. The floor/window in the room were a little noisy, but it is a reasonable trade off with the traditional style of the building.
- Lihi (10/5): Exceptional - Such a cute hostel! The owner was so nice and helped me a lot during my stay, clean and comfortable. Very much recommended
- Andrei (10/5): Exceptional - Perfect location right in the heart of Nagano, friendliest staff, home-like atmosphere, old house with 120 years of history, very clean and nice. Don't expect modern hi-tech here.
- Simthesquid (10/5): Exceptional - Nice cosy place. The atmosphere is prone to meet people. The owner of the place was very friendly and helpful.
- Inbar (10/5): Comfortable, inviting, clean and cozy - Manager was nice and welcoming, the place was warm and there was enough privacy Only one toilet and shower
- Patsainz (10/5): Excellent Location, Highly Recommended - Excellent location, just couple of blocks from the big temple and Main Street. Helpful staff and clean place.
- Viktoriia (9/5): Superb -
- Michal (8/5): Very good -
- Giuseppe (10/5): Exceptional -
- Maria (9/5): i would come again - super close to the temple the staff is really helpful and attentive. amazing location. comfy bed. japanese style. small and quiet hostel
- Gabriela (10/5): Would recommend definitely for solo travelers - Super easy to check in, great location
- Lisa (9/5): A comfortable, convenient, and pleasant stay - Friendly welcome and Nao was very helpful with ideas on what things there were to do in the area and helped look up further information on opening hours, etc. The location is great - close to the temple to reach for early morning service, and there's a bus stop just around the corner to Togakushi Park and the train station if you don't want to walk. The bed was very comfy, and the common areas were clean with everything you would need It was very easy to hear people in the dorm next to my room, and the hallway light shone quite brightly in through - easy enough to put earbuds in though, and still great value for money
- Varda (10/5): Super helpful owner, excellent for bicycle tour - Nao, the owner of the Dot Hostel, was extremely helpful to us. We arrived at his hostel by bicycle with a medical issue (my husband's back). Nao speaks perfect English, was able to discuss with us what we needed, and made many phone calls to find us a doctor to see my husband right away. Even after we were no longer staying at the Dot Hostel, Nao was very responsive and continued to help us navigate the Japanese medical system, including finding a physical therapist and acupuncturist.
Nao has a garage where we could park our bicycles, convenient laundry, a place to hang and dry out our camping gear, strong wifi, a full well stocked kitchen that was a pleasure to use, and a comfy hangout area. The dorms were well laid out, well ventilated and cooled with openable screened windows, and the toilet and shower were spotless. I am a light sleeper, but didn't notice any noise from other rooms as described by other reviewers. The hostel is located a one minute walk from the Zenko-ji temple. The hostel is an incredible value and I would absolutely stay there again.
- Helene (8/5): Nice stay, welcoming and clean - I was lucky to have the dorm for myself which was so peaceful! I liked the wooden interior and the owner was very nice! only one shower and one sink was making it difficult to arrange with other guests
- Pierre (9/5): Superb -
