- Melanie (10/5): - A really old-fashioned Japanese onsen experience like nothing else. We ate in the Japanese restaurant one night and French the other evening. The food was fantastic. Rooms were comfortable but old fashioned. I would highly recommend the room with a private onsen - we saw tanuke (Japanese raccoon dogs) approach whilst we were bathing which was a really special experience. We hiked to the ridge (5 hours return) through a beautiful forest.

- EeL_Teh (10/5): Our Favourite Place on Earth - UPDATE April 26, 2025 I am not sure what to write that is as new and creative as Tobira Onsen Myojinkan deserves. Everything about this property continues to be wonderful. The rooms are great, the food is outstanding at both the French and Japanese restaurants and the service at every level is sublime. Please see last year's review as nothing has changed including the great staff. Special mention to this year's French dinner prepared by Chef Osawa who works under Chef Hando which was Michelin starred in quality and creativity. The Japanese breakfast (which is changed every day) is also terrific. There is no better testimonial to a hotel than repeat customers and we will be making our reservation for next year in the next week....only we are going to stay even longer. Our favorite place in the world. UPDATE March 9, 2024: We just checked out of Tobira Onsen Myojinkan after a second lovely two night stay. As per our review of last year below, nothing has changed. It is still as wonderful as ever. The property itself is in a peaceful rustic setting that brings tranquility to a new level, the onsens are great and the food at both dinner and breakfast is terrific in every way. We stayed in the same room (even though we were offered an upgrade because it was our anniversary) but opted to stay in our room from last year because it is so perfect. Everything is great with the property but what sets Tobira Onsen truly apart is the extraordinary service.....even on Japanese standards. We would like to recognize those wonderful people and are sorry we did not get everyone's name. First of all our thanks to all the chefs in the kitchen for their masterful meals, Mizuho-san and Hina-san for all their help in organizing things before our arrival, Ito-san who is very helpful at the front desk, Tsunomoto-san who met us on arrival and who helped us many times during our stay, Yamada-san and Yamamoto-san who keep the champagne flowing in the 3rd floor lounge, Kamijo-san whom we met last year and who waited for us to finish dinner, even though starting her days off, just to say hello and of course the ever friendly, professional and hugely engaging Kawai-san. It is not often that one has such an amazing service experience that you take down the names but every one of these people (and there were many more) made our stay that much more special. Tobira Onsen Myojinkan is now an annual destination for us and anyone else who craves peace, professionalism, great food and extraordinary service.
- Marimiri (8/5): Peaceful relaxation in the Japanese alps - Unfortunately we only stayed here for one night but even the one night experience was worth it! The rooms are cozy, spacious and comfortable, with private ofuro bath in the room. Hotel has two restaurants- Japanese and French. We have tried both and the food is amazing! It was a delicious paradise. The surrounding are beautiful and so are the views! We didn’t manage to walk around but it looked very beautiful, we have seen many Sakura trees in its full blossom 🌸 on the way to the ryokan. The only reason I gave it a 4 out of 5 is that the amenities are little bit dated but everything is authentic and in full and good functionality! The common bath are very nice and convenient, we managed to try few rooms. I will definitely recommend the place to my friends and future travelers to Matsumoto area, very pretty city to visit!

- nicolemL9232ON (10/5): Absolutely amazing. The only downside is that we didn’t stay longer! - We spent 18 days in Japan (from the US). We splurged on our last night and stayed at myojinkan resort. It was absolutely amazing and my only regret is not staying longer! We had 6 coursed meals while in Japan and our French Japanese style dinner at this place was hands down our favorite of our entire Japan trip! It was also the best sleep we’ve had. Due to my extensive tattooed body, it was nice to get a room (Western Style Zen Room) that had a mini onsen in the room since I’m not allowed in public ones. The view was amazing. I loved the sitting area in our room where we could drink our nespresso coffee in the morning and look out. The mini fridge was stocked w good drinks as well. The staff was hands-down top notch. We had the French dinner and the traditional Japanese breakfast options and both were amazing. If we come back to Japan, we will stay at this place for more than one night!
- Takaaki (10/5): - 素晴らしい旅の思い出となりました。まず、スタッフのおもてなしの数々。食事は日本料理を選びましたが、「本当に日本人に生まれてよかった。」と思える、料理のおいしさを堪能しました。夕食の２時間が、味の舌鼓とスタッフとのやり取りに家族の会話も弾み、あっという間の楽しいひと時となりました。お風呂は「立ち湯」に行ってみました。広い湯船の向こうには、もはや壁もガラスも無く、楓や自然の渓流がすぐそこに存在しています。別世界のような景色が3階の「立ち湯」にみられ、露天？の新しい、そして素晴らしい形態を体験することができました。是非また季節を変えて宿泊したいと思います。
- 218gabrielaa (10/5): Luxurious hotel secluded in the forest - The hotel is impressive since the arrival, with a great welcome in the grand lobby. Guests are checked in by the person who will take care of them throughout their stay: showing them their room and the facilities, explaining the menu during the meals, etc. Rooms are very spacious and very comfortable, full of nice details, great toiletries and dressing gowns, slippers, etc. There are several onsen in the hotel. I visited two of them. In particular there is one that opens up onto the adjacent forest and the river below. It had snowed the day before, and the contrast between the cold environment and the hot water made the experience even better and the place itself even more beautiful. The hotel offers a choice of kaiseki or French dinner. We chose the former and Japanese breakfast, and they were both excellent, in keeping with the rest of the hotel. All the personnel were helpful and polite, keen to explain the food or the traditions and in general make the stay smooth and pleasant.
- 182tanguym (10/5): Superb hotel, perfect for a relaxing stay! - We loved this place! We stayed only one night (at the back end of a few days hiking on the Nakasendo Trail) but we truly enjoyed our stay. Perfect for some well-deserved relaxation after the hike! The hotel is a mix of a Japanese ryokan and Western style hotel - and part of the Relais & Chateaux network. After a couple of nights in more traditional ryokans, we had chosen western style rooms / bedding (very comfortable) and the French style dinner (which turned out to be fusion French / Japanese, it was delicious!) and we didn’t regret it. The onsen baths (3 different ones) are great, a very relaxing and pretty space (views out into the forest), and we enjoyed a massage at the spa. Lovely welcome and efficient service too. We wished we had stayed a bit longer!
- tashaNSW (10/5): Amazing! - The staff, service, facilities, and room were top notch. Once our stay was booked, we received an email questionnaire. We are both vegan and they accommodated our preference. asking for our preferences. You can select between Japanese and French cuisine. We both opted for Japanese. When we arrived, they staff greeted us kindly and it was a delightful surprise to be led into a room filled with Christmas decorations. We booked the "Standard Zen Suite" and were not disappointed. It comes with your own private indoor-outdoor onsen. It was heaven. If you are new to onsen, they also provide helpful instructions upon arrival that you can read. It was my absolute favorite onsen experience. There are three different onsens for guests, each separated by gender. They also provide popsicles, hot/cold tea, in addition to the standard shampoo, conditioner, body wash, hair tonic, skin lotion etc. When we were there they had two shuttles which ran from Matsumoto Station to pick you up. One at 3:15 pm and another at 4:30 pm. We would both love to return!
- waynewagnerww (10/5): Luxury Onsen Experience - This was a gorgeous property with incredibly top notch luxury service. The Zen Suite is designed beautifully in a "Japandi" aesthetic that is exceptional. That suit also has its own private indoor-outdoor onsen, though the other onsens on the property were also beautiful indoor-outdoor onsens where we could feel the winter air as we soaked in the hot water. The dining was impeccable and they had amazing vegan Kaiseki courses. In addition, the lounge area was gorgeously decorated in Christmas tinsel and birch that made it feel like the most festive atmosphere. Everywhere the property felt like it blurred the indoors and outdoors while retaining a sense of warmth. This is not a cheap property, but it is actually good value for the price.
- JYFlorida (10/5): A Relais & Châteaux in the middle of the Japanese alps - Beautiful traditional Ryokan in the outskirts of Matsumoto. Member of the prestigious Relais & Chateaux chain, this superb property offer 2 types of cuisine: Japanese and French, both excellent (although we had a little preference for the Japanese one!) Our room was very large with a beautiful view and a large private onsen. The service is excellent, attentive and very professional.
- LibbyCincinnati (6/5): Wait until they are finished with the renovation. - This is a Relais and Chateaux property so we were expecting it to be a much nicer place. They are closing this year for a total redo of the property. It needs it as there are spots on the carpet and the furniture, etc. it tired. I realize this is a traditional Japanese styled Inn, but it needs updating. The door to bathroom is a self closing one that is hard to open. It was most annoying to deal with. Very odd for a bathroom door. Place is in a pretty setting, Breakfast was a preset menu so it is what they serve you. It was fine, but just not great. They take your shoes when you enter so if you want to walk around outside in the lovely woodlike setting, you need to ask for your shoes back. There was a gentleman that raked leaves into piles that left messages and then he sprinkled flower petals on top of the leaves which was very pretty. The coffee service in the room was too complicated. It was a drip format but it was hard to do without spilling coffee all over. This is an Onsen hotel so many people go here for that reason.

- Kirie (10/5): Amazing Onsen experience - Amazing experience, the all Onsen staff went the extra mile to make our stay the most pleasant possible. The water quality is great and the rooms are really nice and spacious. Food is at great level especially the French restaurant. Breakfast were among the best we ever experienced. The mountain area offers good choice for great walk and the nearby Matsumoto city is a gem with lots of interesting small shops to discover and a great selection of eating places of various topologies.
- Verified traveler (10/5): 扉温泉のおしゃれなホテル - 10年前くらいにも宿泊したのですが、レストランやフリースペースが変わってさらに良くなっていました。フレンチの夕食はとても美味しくワインと相まって最高でした。深夜に立ち風呂に入りましたが、冬の寒い中でも体が温まりました。また機会があれば利用したいと思います
- cc (10/5): - 2回目の宿泊でした。前回はベッドルーム、今回は和室タイプで、以前と同様にリビングエリアから素晴らしい川のせせらぎと深緑の美しい眺めを楽しむことができました。 人気の洋食は予約が取れず、和食懐石ディナーになりましたが、こちらも充分満足できるお味でした。 18:00~20:00の間にレストランへ行き、席は自由です。それがいい点ですが、川沿いの景色を楽しむためには早めに窓際の席を取るのがおすすめだとわかりました。私たちは両親を入れての6名という団体だったため、窓際はもしかしたらそもそも難しいかもしれません。2人でロマンティックに、がベストシチュエーションです。 前回感動したたち湯は健在で、窓のない前方は緑を臨む解放感、絵になります。 宿のクラシカルで落ち着いたインテリア、森の中の静けさ、フリードリンクのお茶など居心地の良さはすてきです。 ただし今回気になった点は２つ。一つは、部屋の入口の式台、水回りの入り口の段差などでつまずきやすい点です。お年寄りはなおさら、みな1，2回は出入り口付近でつまづきました。 もう一点は、ルレエシャトー明神館ならではのスタッフの丁寧なサービス。おおむね良かったですが、その中でお疲れ気味で笑顔の少ない朝のスタッフ、精算時の2重請求ミス、最後の見送りのあっさりさ、という点でちょっと落ちたな、というのが厳しいレビューです。 ホテルの良さをスタッフ全員が共有してゲストに安心と居心地の良さを今まで以上に提供してほしいと思いました。
