Guest Reviews
- Anna (10/5): - Property was in a good location, modest accommodation with simple furnishings and basic bathroom. Good size room. It was an easy walk to the several temples and places of interest such as the Morning Market, Night Market, and Phousi Hill. Would stay here again.
- Colamq (8/5): Good location while Visiting Luang Prabang - The hotel has a very good location, room was clean and comfortable with good hot water. Breakfast is a set menu with fruits, eggs, bacon, ham, bread and coffee. Enough for me . Staff is friendly and try to help as much as they could. I would suggest trying to stay on the 2nd floor, our first room was on the ground floor and It smelled musty, but after we asked they changed us without any problem. My only suggestion is to have someone who knows english more often as the staff don’t understand english and I could feel their frustration as they couldn’t understand us to help us more.
- UHGreg (8/5): Nice stay at the Royal Peacock - Great location in the heart of Luang Prabang, about a 1 minute walk to the Main Street, National Museum and morning market and a 2 minute walk to the Mekong. UNESCO protected building that used to be residence of a relative of a king has been converted into a hotel. Hotel was clean, well furnished and quaint. Breakfast is not a buffet but a set that you order at the desk. I would recommend skipping breakfast at the hotel and eat at the morning market which is right around the corner from the hotel. Hotel was quiet even though it was centrally located.
Hotel was full but since it does not have so many rooms, it was not overwhelmed with guests.
- Verified traveler (10/5): The family suite is perfect. - I stayed in the family suite with bathtub and it was perfect. View on the street, huge room, quiet in the night, perfect location.
The only thing I didnt like was that I was first given the wrong room (not the one I booked) - I got downgraded even though I paid for the suite. Reason: Overbooking or management mistake. I had to severely complain to get this right and so I changed to the right room after the first night.
Another issues is the breakfast. Huge delays when not being the first at the breakfast. First coffee, then 5 minutes later toast, 5 minutes later some eggs. Also eggs with bacon means: two eggs with a half, tiny slice of bacon or half slice of ham. This should not be for a hotel in this price segment.
- Noom-Noom (8/5): Good choice - Good location, this small hotel is right in the city center next to morning and night market. Room and facility is well maintained. Only improvement i can suggest is hot water in shower room is a bit weak.
Their staff is real friendly and helpful. I really like this slow life style in this town, especially in a bit chill season.
- IraNYC14 (6/5): It could be better - I took a taxi from the airport for $10 instead of booking through the hotel which was quoted $12. The hotel is at its best location possible. You roll out of right of the bed, there’s night market, you roll out of left side of the bed, there’s morning market, you get my point.
Coffee shops, restaurants, alms giving tour operators, bike rentals are within 10 mins walk depending on how far you want to walk on the Main Street.
The food court and the post office is about 15 minutes walk. I was surprised to see that the post office was open Sunday evening. Overall, the town and the hotel area felt pretty safe at night, before midnight.
One of my suggestions for the hotel is to upgrade the towels like some other fellow travelers have suggested. It would have been nice if the hotel had bike rentals for $2 like other hotels/hostels since the town is so bikeable. The reception staff did mention they can rent me a bike from town for $4.
Although, I didn’t spend much time in the room during the day, it would have been nice to have blinds that you can open to let the lights in and have screens to prevent the mosquitoes from coming in. At one point when I stopped by at 10 am to grab something from my room, there was no power and water. It was dark in the room when I had to look for things. The only option was to open the windows but it also meant letting the mosquitoes in. I didn’t have time to complain to the front desk about the power and water as I had to run out.
Other than that, although the staff were very polite, they seemed green in then realm of hospitality. When requested to make a reservation for dinner at a restaurant for the night, they just said they didn’t have the restaurant’s number.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Nice hotel. Great staff in a magic place on earth.
- camerons457 (8/5): Perfect Location, Nice Room - Only 15-20 mins from the airport, this hotel is centrally located..., short walking distances to the Morning Market, Night Market and Mekong River. Room was very nice. The morning breakfast was underwhelming, as was the front desk service in general. But the location of the Peacock made up for any shortcomings.
- シャクナゲ (8/5): - 部屋のドアの具合が悪く、カギでの開け閉めが非常に困難だった。
- Sean (8/5): Well located and charming - The location is excellent as it is right between the night market and the morning market. This can make it a bit noisy in the morning but it is nice to be so close. The rooms are very charming but the beds are very very firm. The front desk staff are not very warm unlike the rest of our experience in Laos. I thought the value was fair. I would probably stay there again if for nothing but the great location.
- 344RobertH344 (6/5): An Ok stay - The Royal Peacock is a pleasant centrally located hotel.
The Staff were ok though not overly helpful at times and English wasn't particularly strong for most staff there.
Location - central to everything (LP is small so everything is pretty close).
Rooms - ok. Clean. Unfortunately our room had a noisy air conditioner and the room layout was such that you couldn't view the TV from either the bed or other furniture. Also you're likely to hear the monks around 4:30-5am (temple just up the road)
Breakfast/Room service - ok. BF was 'to order'. Room service was unavailable after 7pm though there are plenty of restaurants nearby.
Value - I'd say low based on the price and service.
Happy Travels to everyone.
- khoa56 (2/5): You must be mad to come here - 1. The service is horrible. The staff is merely talking english. They are most of the time absolutely absent. Not welcoming. Not helping.
2. The cleaning of the room is ABSOLUTELY not the concern for this hotel. Cups are not cleaned. The bed is not done properly. After many years travelling around the world, it’s the first time I see this. In french « Je m’enfoutisme ».
The towels must have been bought 10 years ago, rough and the white is really doubtful. I would not use those towels to clean my floor.
A suspicious smell of toilet and humidity is floating in the rooms.
3. The shower is absolutely incredible. The architect who was designing this must have obtained his diploma in a lucky draw (« Pochette Surprise in French ») and never took a shower in his life!!!! Each time you take a shower you’ll have water everywhere because one of the wall is wooden made with hundreds of holes as decoration ( please look at the photos).
Please plan 15 mn to dry the floor of the bathroom if you don’t want to slip.
4. The doors are not closing properly. No maintenance
5. The hotel is receiving guests from tours from a neighbour country who are really noisy even late in the night.
6. Last but not least! We had the surprise today, coming back from a long day of visiting, very tyred and BIG SURPRISE the room is not cleaned ( at 18:00). When we claimed, the answer was : » normally you should have checked out today »!! After long discussions and presentation of the proof that we booked and paid the room for 4 days, no apologies!!! When we asked to clean the room, the answer was that the cleaning people already left and it will take to them 20 mn to come back!!!! I DON’t want them to be disturbed late in the evening and having to come back!!!!
7. Airport Transfer. We paid for taxi from airport 50 000 kip. The receptionist told us to go to airport the hotel will charge 100 000 kip for taxi. Weird! But we hadn’t no choice but to accept. They forgot to cash in the amount and when arrived at the airport the taxi driver told us it’s 50 000 kip it means that the receptionist is putting the other 50 000 kip in his pocket. We paid the taxi driver 100 000 kip because We prefer ti give it to him than to those guys in reception.
I understand now why the receptionist is more concerned to help the guests renting motor bikes than doing his job
We paid 77 EUR a night which is fairly high for Laos. We paid the same price in Vientiane for a same level hotel (4 stars) and everything was absolutely perfect.
If you want to enjoy your stay in Luang Prabang, better to chose an other hotel.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - It is Laos so I feel the rustic bulidling style fits right in. Exposed beams etc. But you still want the door to lock securely and have a semblence of sound proofing . You want curtains that actually block out light and air con that doesn't sound like a small industrial unit at full throttle and many other things , are sadly lacking in the room I was in.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - The location was excellent - across from the palace, a block from the night market and main shopping street,, and right next to the morning msrket. Breakfast choices were limited but with excellent service.. TV reception was snowy. The bed was firm, but surprisingly comfortable. The towels we're dingy, but clean and in good repair. Overall, this is a good average hotel comfortable, and with an excellent location.
- Iceshadow (10/5): Conveniently located hotel, - The Royal Peacock is less then 15 min from the airport in Luang Prabang. Though if you are taking a shared transport from the airport (which is extremely common if you didn't arrange for a private transfer with the hotel) it will take slightly longer than that.
What I liked about the place
1) 100 m from the night market.
2) 10 m from the morning market.
3) 20 m from the Royal Palace museum.
4) 110 m to the foot of Mount Phousi.
5) Spacious twin room with 2 queen sized 4 poster bed (208)
6) Helpful staff.
What I didn't like
1) The very steep stairs I had to climb to get to the room. If you have problems climbing stairs then remember to request for a ground floor room at the time of booking. The hotel is extremely popular, so you are unlikely to get a room change at check-in
Much of Luang Prabang is a UNESCO heritage site. As such most of the hotels there are boutique hotels. Meaning that as long as you stay in the historic centre of the city the hotels there are quite literally a boutique hotel with 30 rooms or less - in many cases much much less. The advantage of the Royal Peacock is its location.
The hotel is property is small and based on an old property facing the Royal Palace ground. From what I've been told, it use to be a royal residence, though I really have no idea if that is true. The property consists of 3 buildings. A relatively new single story building which houses the reception, as well as the kitchen in the back area. There is a generous courtyard in front dining tables and chairs set up. This is were you have your breakfast while watching small groups of tourist troupe by as they make their way either to the morning market, the royal palace museum or the jetties along the Mekong. The other 2 buildings are where the rooms are based in with a small garden in the front, which though small have quite a few lounge chairs for small gatherings.
Sandwiched between the main axis road running through the spine of the peninsula and the road running parallel with the Mekong, the Royal Peacock is located on a side street next to a temple complex, opposite the Royal Palace museum, and a side street that marks the start of the morning market. This makes the hotel one of the best located in Luang Prabang.
If you don't intend to participate in the morning alms giving take a nice breakfast at the courtyard and enjoy the coffee. After which walk through the small garden to start your morning stroll along the morning market. Be prepared for the sights and smells of an asian wet market where you will see mekong catfish butchered and waiting to be bought as well as packaged snacks like banana chips that you can buy back as a gift for friends.
After the morning stroll, walk back to the hotel for a short rest and freshen up. Luang Prabang is littered with many a cafe, so make your way to one during the height of the afternoon heat, sit down, order a simple/luxurious lunch, and coffee/tea and a delicious french pastry for dessert. Then when lunch is down just laze back and read your book or pen your thoughts. In the evening go for a massage and then dinner in one of the other cafes. And then after dinner stroll through the night market and if you happen to be the first sale of the night, you might end up with a good discount on your purchase.
After your shopping walk back to the hotel and call it a night. As Luang Prabang is a small city that is fairly religious many of the establishments start to close from 9 onwards. Don't expect anything be open beyond midnight as many of the locals wake up really early to partake in the alms giving ceremony.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Perfect location! - This hotel was right off the main drag, putting us literally steps away from several major temples and sites in Luang Prabang. The staff was very friendly -- helping us coordinate drivers for far flung destinations, including a few waterfalls, and very knowledgeable in recommending other interesting things to do in town that weren't in the average guidebook. We'd happily stay there again.
- PatSnyder (8/5): Okay Hotel in Luang Prabang - Luang Prabang is a cute place to visit, and it does have its quirkiness whereby you see lovely things like silk scarves and dresses selling for a hefty price, and then really delicious and special Laotian cuisine at great restaurants being offered at wonderful reasonable prices! The Royal Peacock can’t really make up its mind where it stands in this extreme!
While it has spacious rooms with interesting architecture, the beds are over-the-top hard. The breakfasts are very good though pretty unimaginative. The staff was nice but not really that friendly.
The hotel is located right next door to the Royal Palace, making it an easy walk to most places in the town.
- 559adilh (8/5): Excellent Location - Excellent central location within walking distance to all main temples, bars and restaurants. Beautiful buildings and lovely gardens. Adequate room and just about ok bathroom. Staff were polite and pleasant but lacked the ability to address certain issues raised with them. Enjoyed our stay, however, didn’t feel the hotel was up to 4 stars category and seemed overpriced for the lack of facilities.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Lovely hotel next to old palace. Centrally located next to Morning and Night markets. In literally the center of Luang Prabang.
- Hemorine (10/5): - The location is convenient to walk around the town and to reach to such essential tourist spots as the National Museum, the Phousi Hill, the boat quay and the night market.
- T4044VLmatth (8/5): Perfect boutique hotel - We enjoyed our stay here. It’s great value compared to some of the considerably more expensive hotels in Luang Prabang, but was clean, comfortable and perfectly located. Loved the heritage of the hotel and the styling they have done in the rooms.
Breakfast was great and enough variety to have something different each day if you wanted (and great coffee too!!). We ordered some beers in the afternoon and found it only slightly more expensive than the bars in town. Other reviewers it was expensive prices for beers but the hotel must have revised their prices down
They also helped us book a transfer to kuangsi waterfalls and to the airport.
All the staff were super helpful
My only complaint would be the size of the bathrooms (small) and the pillows (not great), but other than that I would recommend the hotel
- AnttiHel (6/5): Too many faults for a 4-star hotel - My review is quite harsh, because I had paid up quite a bit to get a 4-star hotel. There were only a few reviews when I booked in November 2017, but they were positive. But the hotel definitely didn’t live up to my expectations. All the faults would’ve been acceptable if the room had cost 60-70% less.
The room was very dark - I couldn’t tell if the sun was shining outside or not.
The room had poor sound insulation. When people got up in the morning for the alms ceremony (and I didn’t), all the noise from the corridor and neighboring rooms came through.
The first day, all the towels had (permanent) stain marks.
On the second day, I stayed in my room quite late, until 2 pm, so I asked them to make sure that my room is still serviced. They said yes, but it was not.
Air conditioning was very loud.
Mattress was very hard - even though I like firm mattresses. The pillows were good though, and there were plenty.
There was no safe in my room. Once I complained, one was brought in, but it didn’t work. Getting it fixed was a very slow process.
Breakfast was made to order, and the food in itself was good, but I prefer breakfast buffets. The selection on the menu was very limited, and ordering breakfast verbally comes with a language barrier. More than once, I got the opposite of what I wanted. I wanted toast, not croissants, got the croissants. My muesli was mixed with fruits. Ordering a cup of coffee requires getting the waiters attention each time.
The garden had some wooden sun chairs, but the garden is facing the street with people and traffic going by, so spending time there wasn’t pleasant.
The mini bar didn’t have any Coke Zero, even though it was listed.
On the positive side, the location of the hotel is good: on a side street next to the Royal Palace Museum, Wat Mai, and the night market. The buildings are charming. Fruit juice was provided at checkin.
- thesojourningseahs (8/5): Great location but pricey! - Stayed in this hotel for 3D2N during my return visit to Luang Prabang from Phonsavan with my family. My experience can be summarized as below:
What's impressive:
- Excellent location (at the old quarters area), just next to the Royal Palace Museum and 1 min walk to the daily night market along Sivavangvong road. Plenty of restaurants and other shops just short distance from hotel. Mt Phousi is also nearby and walking distance to all other places of interest.
- Beautifully furnished hotel in old colonial building style, cosy furnishing and made us feel like home.
- Very helpful & friendly staffs.
What to expect:
- Excellent room size large enough to fit 2 large double beds and still have enough space to walk around. Room comes with bottled water, kettle, coffee / tea and basic amenities, toiletries and towels, in-room safe, TV. Room is clean.
- Complimentary high speed WiFi provided throughout the hotel.
- Hotel provides daily breakfast for guests. Fixed menu but prepared fresh when you order.
- No swimming pool in the hotel.
What can be improved?
- Can reconsider making the price more competitive as it is slightly on the high side. (Lots of other cheaper options 5 - 10 mins away from the location)
- Staffs start work early in the morning, can hear their conversation outside from the window. Should either consider improving sound proofing or lowering down the noise level in order not to disturb the guests early in the morning.
Final Verdict:
- Excellent location in old quarters section of Luang Prabang, convenient and plenty of eateries nearby and walking distance to most places of interest. Pretty pricey hotel but still a decent hotel to stay in if your want to explore the old quarters area.
- Linda_Hagues (10/5): Lovely quaint hotel - Lovely traditional hotel with surprising mod cons. Clean, spacious rooms that comfortably fit a family of 4.
Fantastic location less than a minute from main street and river.
Friendly, helpful staff who speak English.
Small but varied breakfast menu, you can also ask them to prepare lunch or dinner.
Best of all had wifi to keep the kids amused!
- Paul (8/5): Great Location Hotel - Stayed for three nights, excellent hotel, great location, good breakfast but it’s the every day off a meun.
It was four of us in two rooms and the matresses were thin and poor. We asked that another mistress be put on top our and we never got a response.
Other than that you are a few minutes walk to everything in Luang Prabang
- emmaestabillo (10/5): peaceful, quiet and nice and clean - i feel very comfy, rooms are clean and big,the staff is very kind and helpful, good location, simple and elegant, breakfast at the patio or in front of the garden, nice, feel free.we enjoy..its good location bcoz you are near to museum, restaurants, western union night market, pharmacy and evrythng u need..,
- jeanl_fr (6/5): Clean and good service but... - Overall, this is a very good, clean and professional hotel, perfectly located and with quite high standards (for the country). Not much to complain about.
Now it might not matter much, but there is one detail that will cost them two stars : the big bottle of Beerlao at $4,5. That's almost 40k LAK for a bottle that anybody can buy for 9k LAK in a shop, for less than 15k LAK in most restaurants and maybe, maybe 20 or 25k LAK in a fancy place. But 40k for a bottle of beer, this is unseen in the whole country. 20k LAK for a small bottle of soda that usually costs less than 5k LAK is also incredibly expensive. I understand that this hotel mostly caters to rich tourists, but the prices of the drinks on their terrasse is just plain theft. Sleep there but don't eat/drink!
- Ros (8/5): - Great location, great staff!
- johnmN512BW (8/5): Fantastic Location - The location for this hotel is absolutely brilliant close to everything. The hotel itself is very traditionally decorated with very large rooms and massive beds , if prefer soft beds this hotel is not for you as the beds are asian style hard and flat. Aircon is very very good not noisy which enables a comfortable sleep. My only criticism is the breakfast its very basic and the service is some what clumsy almost "Fawlty Towers ish" with orders mis interpreted and some completely missed. If you jot fuzzy it will be fine but ifNJlooking for a good breakfast try dinning out in the multitude of breakfast eateries minutes away.
- James (10/5): - Excellent Hotel, the bed was a bit firm, but everything else was A++.
- chinawells (8/5): Great room in fantastic location - We stayed for one night at the Royal Peacock and had a great stay. If I were to nitpick, I'd complain a bit that the oversized bed filled so much space that I had to sidle past two sides of it to get into bed. I'm at the age where I need at least one trip to the toilet in the middle of the night, so a smaller bed would have made for a safer room. In the end there was only one lightly stubbed toe to deal with!
The room was tastefully decorated and so close to markets and cultural attractions. We tried to extend our stay but could not arrange it because the hotel was booked full for the second night.
We got some assistance to find another hotel for the remainder of our stay in Luang Prabang, On our way to the next place, my daughter realized that she left her kindle behind. We called about it to have them put it aside. Instead, the porter drove it over to the new hotel on his vespa. Service doesn't get better than that.
- Robby (10/5): Beautiful Hotel in Great Location - The hotel is in a great location in Luang Prabang. The staff was friendly and very helpful. The room and amenities were great and made our stay very comfortable. It was easy to get around from the hotel and if we wanted ed to explore outside the city the staff was helpful in setting it up for us.
- Lalita (10/5): Center of everything - The hotel is beautiful by itself and the room size is quite big with good decoration.
Breakfast is very delicious, you may choose American style or Laos Style (recommend) together with croissant and fruits. I really enjoy my stay here and recommend everyone to stay here.
The best location and the best hotel with affordable price.
- marcD (10/5): Ideal location, lovely setting. - Warm and very friendly staff. Excellent central location for the town and night market. I would stay again and have no hesitation in recommending pampering yourself at the Royal Peacock in Luang Prabang if it's in you're budget.
- Sara (10/5): Great hotel easy access to the main area. -
Firstly the staff were so helpful they took care of anything you needed. They took time to give you ideas about where to go. They organised a Scooter for us which came directly to the hotel. Room was spacious and pretty and lovely as were the gardens. Could get our laundry done at the hotel at a very good rate, most hotels charge you a fortune! Breakfast was not a buffet which was great because you had a good slection from their menu and you knew it was not sitting around for hours.
We had a very earely flight on the day we left so they an early breakfast for us.
We would definately stay there again.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Breakfast was good
- Kim (10/5): A cosy place in between day and night markets - The hotel is situated at a quiet side road; within meters from the bustling day market on the left and night market on the right. Most of the attractions are within walking distance: the royal palace museum, the ferry, the day market, the night market, mount Phousi.
Despite its proximity to the markets, the hotel is quiet as it is located at the side road and there are not many vehicles travelling on the road. It is so refreshing to go back to the tranquil room after all the shopping and sight seeing.
There are nearby restaurants and food is never a problem. On the last day, we decide to eat at the hotel and we had a sumptuous lunch.
We stayed for 5 nights and they serve us a variety of breakfast: one day fried egg, another day omelette etc.
The staff is very approachable and friendly. We enjoyed their service very much. They are so attentive to us. We sat on the seats waiting for a friend and the staff serve us water (without us asking for it) with a smile.
